2020 HAS SHOWN US WHAT WE CAN
A
s we entered 2020, we had no idea of the challenges ahead. As COVID-19 began to spread and we moved into quarantine, we heard from students with unprecedented need. They were losing jobs, struggling to pay living expenses and navigating online classes, many while also helping children learn at home.
2020
IMPACT
As our students turned to the Foundation for support, we turned to you for help. And you have been essential to their success.
638 $993,000
The pandemic hit this already vulnerable population hard, but we are so proud of what you helped us achieve. Together, we were able to award nearly a million dollars in scholarships. We supported over 150 students with emergency funding and the CBC pantry had more than 800 visits from those experiencing food insecurity. Without these resources, many students may have had to abandon their education.
SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
IN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
While no two student stories are the same, each shows just how important the CBC community is to them. Students like Madison, who was homeless when she moved to Tri-Cities with her disabled parents. Now a scholarship recipient, she is pursuing an education in the medical field. You are impacting her life and others.

As we start this new year, we know that there are many unknowns. What is certain is that the College will continue to find innovative ways to educate students. And with your help, the Foundation will be there to provide the additional support they need to be successful. As Hawks, we soar together. Thank you for lifting our students up and helping them soar higher. We cannot thank you enough!

NEWS CONGRATULATIONS, ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR LLOYD KEITH The CBC Foundation is proud to announce that Lloyd Keith, Nuclear Technology Adjunct Instructor, has been named the 2020-2021 Alumnus of the Year. Keith was recognized for this honor because of his work over the past 12 years to restart and nurture the College’s Nuclear Technology programs. He currently works as a Human Performance Improvement Manager at Washington River Protection Solutions and has spent many years developing curriculum and teaching classes in CBC’s Nuclear Technology program.
KIMBERLY HARPER JOINS CBC BOARD OF TRUSTEES CBC welcomed Kimberly Harper as its newest member of the Board of Trustees on October 11. A former CBC Spirit Award winner, Harper, is a physical scientist who brings a strong background in STEM education advocacy and community involvement, in addition to nearly a quarter-century of experience working with the Department of Energy in environmental management and research and development projects.
“I am a donor to the Adan and Norfilia Tijerina scholarship fund at Columbia Basin College through the Foundation. The scholarship monies that we have designated are for first-generation, lowincome and disabled students. I feel that’s very important because those individuals tend to be sometimes marginalized. I give to the students at CBC because I want to provide hope for the future.”

DONOR ENDOWMENT & INDUSTRY SUPPORT HELP GROW AG PROGRAM The National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) recently named Columbia Basin College’s Agricultural program as its “Outstanding PostSecondary Agriculture Program” in the western United States for 2020. CBC took the top prize for a region comprised of 10 states in all. Dr. Sandya Kesoju, Director for Agriculture Education, Research & Development at CBC, believes the NAAE evaluators recognized the depth of the program’s degree options, internships, its eight-acre research farm and greenhouse that allow students hands-on experiential learning, as well as its engagement with the community. An endowment and local industry donations and in-kind support have helped broaden the program over the years.
CBC took the top prize for a region comprised of 10 states in all.
Charlie and Helen Cox established the Charlie N. and Helen C. Cox School of Agriculture Endowment to support the advancement of students in the CBC Agriculture program. Their endowment provides $1,000 scholarships for up to 20 ag students each year and supports student workers. The endowment also helped build a greenhouse and pay for program equipment needs. Because of this generous support, CBC’s ag program graduates will continue to fulfill this vital industry’s abundant workforce demands that anchor our region’s economy.
