Some wonder, why a funicular railway rather than a picture of an adorable polar bear, resting it’s head on a block of ice? What makes it different from the metro, a bus, or any other vehicle, besides it’s slightly cleaner appearance? A Funicular railway is, as most of you know, condemned to travel a repetitive path up and down a mountain. One can’t but take notice of how it´s mundane task symbolizes the everyday emotional ups and downs of ordinary life. One can’t help but wonder if we, like the funicular railway, are eternally destined to a monotonous existence.
Overcoming Apathy We have a tendency to forget. The flow of information, traveling at a constantly increasing speed, from broadcast stations around the world to the palms of our hands, has shielded us from reality. We are bombarded by advertisement grenades and newsflash projectiles. Thus, our cognitive system learns to block and divert. We become immune and forget. Hence the morning news manage to fleetingly evaporate out of our thoughts before noon, and the events that shocked us yesterday wither away in a matter of weeks, if not days. For this reason, tribuna* invites you to reflect, reconsider and, most important of all, remember. Certain issues simply can’t be condemned to be stored on the back of our minds. They demand action, thus we must bear them in our thoughts, and move away from the bunker of indifference, in order to find a cause that inspires desire to get involved. As inhabitants of a tropical region, a worthy cause to consider is the plight of endangered species around the globe. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN): there are 5,766 endangered species in the planet, which face a very high risk of extinction in the near future, and 3,947 critically endangered species, which face an extremely high risk of extinction in the immediate future. Moreover, there are over 800 different endangered species living in Colombia. Hence, it is necessary to break our apathetic lifestyle and work towards the conservation of our national environment and the species that compose it.

Why Being Elite Won’t By: Mónica Villegas, class of 2012
“Our best universities have forgotten that the reason they exist is to make minds, not careers.” William Deresiewicz
At a very young age we are taught which universities are “the best” and which will help us succeed in our future, since their names are world renowned and they’ll most likely guarantee us a high-paying job. What our parents and teachers forgot to tell us is that the name won’t make us a better person, nor will it guarantee that all of our abilities are developed. Elite colleges encourage their students to flatter themselves for being there and for the opportunities that they receive by being a part of such a high-profiled university. There are obviously undeniable advantages of an elite education; however, it is important to understand that while some abilities are being developed, others are being shattered. With so many people struggling for a spot at the top of the ladder, we should all ask ourselves exactly what will we get in the end, because, as colleges keep reminding their elite students, they are the leaders of tomorrow. William Deresiewicz is a man who studied in the Ivy League Yale University, an institution known worldwide for its amazing opportunities and for their equally amazing scholars. It was this man who decided to tell the world about the disadvantages of an elite education, and why a famous name doesn’t necessarily mean a working mind. As he states it, the first disadvantage is that it makes you incapable of talking to people who aren’t like you. Yes, there is diversity in elite schools, but it basically narrows down to ethnicity and race, while in terms of social class, these institutions are largely homogeneous. Deresiewicz says that the main problem this causes is the fact that, despite students being cultivated with liberal attitudes, they are not able to hold a simple conversation with people of the working class due to the social differences they have not been prepared to face in daily situations.
4 *
However, Deresiewicz insists that it isn’t just a matter of class; he states that his education taught him to, “believe that people who didn’t go to an Ivy League or equivalent school weren’t worth talking to, regardless of their class.” He says that his university made him feel that such people were beneath him because, as top universities love to say, their students are all “the best and the brightest,” while the others are simply not that good. Later in his life he came to realize that there are very smart people who don’t attend elite colleges, while there are other smart people who don’t go to college at all. In fact, Deresiewicz admits that there are smart people that aren’t actually “smart.” Nowadays, the existence of multiple forms of intelligence has opened the door to many possibilities, but that doesn’t mean elite universities are supporting the different abilities their students have, as they tend to focus on a single form of intelligence: the analytic. Deresiewicz says that this is true for many universities because their students, faculty, and administrators have this one form of intelligence to such a high extent, that their tendency is to ignore the value of others. Social intelligence, emotional intelligence, and creative ability, to name just a few, are not distributed widely among the elite colleges, meaning that the “best” students are only the smartest in one narrow sense. Deresiewicz believes that another disadvantage of an elite education is how it inculcates a false sense of self-worth. Being part of an elite college or getting to one involves nu-

Best
merical rankings: SAT, GPA, GRE, which leads you into thinking of yourself in terms of numbers. You start believing that your fate, your identity, and your value depend on those numbers. When in reality, what those tests really measure is your ability to take them, not who you are as a human being. The problem starts when students forget about that and academic excellence becomes, being good at something, simply because it make them better than everyone else. Deresiewicz criticizes the fact that elite colleges give their students a strong sense of entitlement by leading them to believe that because their SAT scores are higher, they deserve more than other people. That is why he emphasizes that a great disadvantage of an elite education is that it teaches you to think that measures of test-taking abilities and academic achievements are measures of value in some moral sense, when in reality, they’re not. People who graduate from elite colleges are not more valuable than talentless people or even lazy people; the name won’t instantly make you a better person. Nonetheless, Deresiewicz believes that another disadvantage is, as ironic as it sounds, the fact that elite colleges give second chances to their students, allowing them to take the easy way out. It doesn’t help students prepare for reality when their university lets them hand in work late with whatever excuse, gives them extensions, and a wide range of opportunities. The truth is that, in real life, it’s most likely you won’t get a second chance at doing your work, or your
boss won’t allow you to hand in late the papers he needs urgently; at your work and most of the things you’ll do in life you’ll have to work with deadlines that aren’t negotiable, which is something that many universities –non-elite– teach their students to do. As Deresiewicz states, this students are being prepared for “lives of subordination, supervision, and control, lives of deadlines, not guidelines.” Meanwhile, graduates from elite colleges will most likely have enough power to control what surrounds them. Deresiewicz argues that for the elite there will always be “another extension—a bailout, a pardon, a stint in rehab—always plenty of contacts and special stipends—the country club, the conference, the year-end bonus, the dividend.” Not only is it a disadvantage the temptation elite colleges offer to mediocrity, but the temptation it offers to security. When parents are asked why they work so hard, they undoubtedly explain that it’s because they want to give their children the best possible education since it will open many doors for them. That is true in a sense, but what parents don’t take into account are the opportunities it shuts down. Yes, they’ll probably be richer than the average person, but what is the use of being a millionaire when you might have a job that you hate or don’t believe in, and you have to do it every day? The truth is, all universities will provide amazing opportunities for their students, but sometimes we believe that its prestige will make us a better person and lead us to a better place, when in reality, it might hurt us more than help us. So forget about all the comments on which university is the best, do what feels right because even if you don’t end up in the elite school everyone –including yourself – expected you to, what matters is what you make out of it and how you apply it to your everyday life.t*

do.

No Sanity?
It is no secret that throughout the years Facebook has become a powerful and influential social networking site among the younger generations. You now meet someone at a party and skip the traditional, old-fashioned conversation and exchange of personal information. You immediately turn your back to them and discreetly pull out your smart phone and look them up on Facebook. Within a matter of seconds, you know about their sexual orientation, their music taste, their religious beliefs, their political preferences, and their relationship status. All you needed to do so was their first and last name, no need to establish a conversation, make small talk, or even look them in the eye; it was all a click away. But, what happens when that person’s name doesn’t yield any results? Yes, you have made sure their last and first name were spelt correctly and you even went the extra mile and looked for their profile through a mutual friend’s account, but there was still no trace of them. It is because they have strict and harsh privacy settings? Do they go by a nickname? Or, is it possible that they have no Facebook account? Are there actual members of the young, “tech-savvy” generation who don’t preach to Zuckerberg’s creation and spend countless hours of their time “updating their statuses,” uploading pictures, “fighting a poke war”, and carefully crafting their ideal and flawless online alter ego? According to an investigation conducted in 2011, by the virtual organization Online Schools, young, non-Facebook users do exist, but they are a minority. The study reveals that there are approximately 500,000,000 active Facebook users in the world, composed mostly of 18 to 34
year olds. 48% of those who fall within this age range admit to checking their Facebook as soon as they wake up and 28% of them do so through their smart phones, before they even get out of bed. Statistics like these are proof that Facebook has enslaved us. It has created a constant craving for communication, online interaction, approval, and praise. A Facebook “like” has taken the place of the personal, spoken compliment and the number of online friends has become a measure of our worth and value as individuals. Furthermore, companies like Forbes assure that potential employers check their applicants’ Facebook profile and that the absence of one may cost them their job or position. Additionally, the discovery that serial killers, like the Colorado theater shooter James Holmes and the Norwegian mass shooter Anders Behring Breivik, have no Facebook account has alarmed psychologists, leading them to believe that the absence of one may be a red flag that indicates that they’re dysfunctional and dangerous members of society. Some studies have even gone as far as to claim that the lack of a “Facebook account could be the first sign that you are a mass murderer.” So, while the world perceives non-Facebook users as socially withdrawn and isolated members of society, more prone to becoming psychopaths, I happen to believe the mentally unstable citizens are those hiding behind their computer screens. Those who jump out of joy from their seats at the sight of a friend request. Those who compulsively check their smart phones for notifications or updates. Even, those who pose for a camera only in hopes of obtaining a new profile picture. And I am more than glad that I can escape from them, at least in the online world. t*

Human Benefits By: Natalia VelĂĄsquez, class of 2012
Is it more important to protect animals or to continue the improvement of drugs for humans? Animal testing has been used for many years. It has allowed the creation of many advances for science, especially for medicine, since the organism of animals’ functions similarly to that of humans. Therefore, testing on them can lead to accurate results. However, there are some differences and limitations that researchers need to be aware of, and that sometimes they don’t take into account. Many animals are killed, suffer pain and have to live in harsh conditions all their lives until they find a cure or die; sustaining research centers is expensive, and although we get huge benefits from it, where do animal rights fall?
10 *
The majority of animal testing is done in research centers to find different treatments and drugs for different human diseases. By doing these experiments researchers
vs
are able to find a cure for many diseases and improve the quality of life of many people. Without animal testing, very important medicines like insulin, vaccines and HIV drugs would not exist. Animal testing is fundamental to continue progressing since it helps investigators make new discoveries. It is also used to test drugs that already exist, making sure that they will not have any side effects on humans and that they are safe, before being released on the market.
Animals can be used in different forms to make improvements. Not only are they useful to test drugs, but also to develop new methods and ideas. The knowledge gained is incredible; this is seen in one of the most important achievements accomplished, organ transplants. This discovery was originated when scientists began to try different procedures and various operations on animals. Another important accomplishment was the developing of new techniques for surgeries like the open-heart. Therefore, the benefits that animal testing brings to humanity are enormous. The animals that are used in these laboratories are usually mice or rats; only 10% of the animals that are tested are different. These animals are normally taken out of animal shelters in which they would die anyway. Annually in United States there are five billion animals killed to make different types of
s.
Animal Suffering
food for human consumption. Comparatively, animals used in testing are about 20 million, much less and for a good purpose according to Animal Portal. On the other hand, animal testing also has a negative side, since it can be an atrocious experience for animals. On an investigation done by Do Something, it was shown that there are millions of animals that are used for experiments; every second, thirty three animals die in research centers worldwide and 9% of the animals involved in testing die just from anesthesia. The animals that survived are used for experimenting, and most of the time, after they finish they are killed, kept in captivity, or released in animal protection centers. If they are “fortunate and get to live in protection centers, but their life is never joyful. These animals normally begin to develop many emotional problems and, because they are used to being in a cage, the trauma is so immense that sometimes they do not move again. The other problem is that many of the substances being tested are never useful for humans; therefore, a life can be ended without being worth it, and all the suffering would have been in vain. Animals that are in research centers have to suffer pain and different ailments throughout the testing process; their life quality and lifetime is reduced enormously, because the conditions they live in during the experiment are depressing, Finally, an animal that has to live in captivity is always under stress and will not enjoy life like in their natural environment, even if they are in good conditions. Another negative aspect about animal testing is the high cost that it in-
volves. Normally, the testing costs a large quantity of money because the animals need food, a place to live, and treatments; moreover the drug that has to be injected for testing also brings additional costs. Besides, there needs to be a group of workers who are highly capacitated for the job and the laboratory equipment needs to be modern, which usually means more expensive. Again, having a research center involves high costs, and many argue that the results are not accurate enough to justify the amount of money invested in them, another reason why animal testing is negative. Is it fair to improve a species by stepping on top of another? Is it necessary to have this type of testing testing? Is it reasonable to keep an animal in captivity all his life? On the other hand, why stop progress, which will alleviate the suffering of our own species? Animal testing is a multifaceted issue; many consider it necessary and others immoral. The truth is the human species is the one who gets all the benefits and the animals all the suffering. It is a fact that medicine makes great improvements making it possible for humans to get better drugs and treatments for different diseases. However, it is also a fact that the testing puts animals into terrible living conditions. What side do you take? t*

If you grew up during the 90’s, then you were most likely touched and fascinated by one of the greatest series about friendship, struggle, and martial arts: Dragon Ball. This series, which follows the kindhearted Goku as he fights to save his loved ones and become the greatest warrior in the universe, was written by Akira Toriyama and has evolved into several television series, video games and movies since it first appeared as a manga comic book in 1986. Dragon Ball’s unmatched success is due to the fact that it has something that separates it from the thousands of anime series that have existed. It’s not the thrilling fights, or the incomparable imagination of its writer, but the lessons that can be learned from each and every one of its characters. From Goku, the hero of the story, to Krillin, his faithful, but not so powerful friend, to Vegeta, the bad guy turned good; they all have something to teach us. There’s a great lesson to be learned from Vegeta, the proud Saiyan prince. At first an enemy to Earth and its inhabitants, Vegeta considered himself to be the greatest warrior that had ever existed and his unrelenting pride kept him from knowing true happiness. When he meets Goku,
14 *
though, Vegeta learns that there are other reasons to fight besides pride and finally acknowledges that it is Goku, not he, who is the greatest warrior there is. By letting go of his pride, Vegeta finds happiness fighting for nobler purposes and assists Goku in defending planet Earth. Krillin, Goku’s loyal friend, teaches us the value of friendship. Despite being much less powerful than Goku, Krillin never envies his best friend and does not let the difference in their power levels come in the way of their friendship. Krillin is always there for Goku and often sacrifices himself for the sake of his friend. On many occasions Krillin let go of his fear and faced up to a much stronger enemy in order to give Goku time to recover or charge his attack. The list of lessons is endless, but it’s undoubtedly from Goku that we learn the greatest one Dragon Ball has to offer. Goku, in his essence, is a display of the hero in a man’s soul. He shows us how much can be accomplished by pushing the pre-conceived limits and reaching deeper and deeper into your own potential. He is willing to persevere through anything and fight to the death for his values and his loved ones, but especially to prove to himself that he is the best that he can be. Goku teaches us to always value challenges and to consider them opportunities to learn and take one step further in becoming the greatest person we can be.
And even though Goku may be the greatest warrior in the universe, he becomes it without ever losing his purity of heart. Many fans have yelled with indignation at the television screen as Goku showed mercy to even his cruelest enemies and refused to finish them off once they had already been defeated. And although his kindness may have cost him several times, without it he could never have become such an amazing warrior. Decades after it was first released, Dragon Ball continues to inspire people. No other television series has made its viewers believe in themselves or has pushed them to reach their full potential as much as this one. Dragon Ball fans all over the world have laughed and cried with the adventures of Goku and his friends, and absolutely all of them, at one point or another, have clenched their muscles and roared at the top of their lungs as they attempted to transform into a Super Saiyan. t*
¡Diagnosticado
¡No!

“Wordaholics,” the High School poetry club, is a space for students to step away from the assigned writing required in their regular school courses in order to write freely and without imposed limitations. Through poetry students are provided an outlet for their feelings and frustrations in the safe and respectful environment of the group. Additionally, workshops and activities, frequently carried out in the club, give the students good opportunities to improve their writing skills. The “Wordaholics” have been meeting regularly throughout the school year, working on both writing and performing poetry. Here are some examples of the original work members of the club have produced:

So you think, that your protruding breasts Is enough to make you stand on higher ground? Than those of us who are put to the test For everything we don’t possess, Because you believe that being louder makes you better Being larger makes you greater You believe in all those messed up proportions that measure. Well I don’t believe in measurements. They restrain. I believe that the only limits existing are the ones in my calculus class, And although my insecurities have not come to pass, I forgot about fretting, looking safe sane Because sanity is overrated, And I’d rather be understated Than pretend to be something that isn’t so cool to begin with. Because reality through the eyes of Hilary Clinton sounds more disturbing Than CS Lewis’s Marihuana invoked fantasies So… Forgive me, For tiring of that absurd conspiracy I’m subjected to, For creating my own, and forgetting the one that was created for me For me? Or against me? I guess I’ll never know. What I do know is that I’m empty That I avoid reflective surfaces which reveal that I’m not lost, That there’s nothing left to find,

That I’m not a work in progress; I’m an entity. An atom that feels it deserves more than being polarized into positives and negatives, A wannabe gray area which in reality, Is ordinary. Black. A simple mind that strives for contradictions, So wrapped up in its own desire for complexity, It forgets the basis of its authenticity. Authenticity attempting to escape From under the pressure of that crowd, That wants to fit me into the box, And although they end up fitting me into a circle, Their initial intent did not fail because They never failed to mold me, Turning me into a static inanimate object An integral part of their cube because being a circle doesn’t change The fact that I became a constant unchangeable element, Thus on the inside I was no longer a person, but a variable Transformed into a means. Yet when I reflect upon it words fail me Ideas escape my buttered brain, and the truth becomes obscure. The one product of my digressing reflection stands out; The black sheep within the mob of white Is not the original, but the spontaneous Not the complex, but the authentic.

Blame it on me Blame it on my mind This how I how fall Buts it’s me But this is how rind its how I am I am misfit I am misogyny I am sociopath Maybe it just that I`m different breed But well I know that what I do here matters, This how I show my love, doing all that it takes. She changed, showed me that all things aren’t perfect. I always wanted to be happy But many say you can`t always get what you want.
Well I am just left to cry out or to kill myself. Well again blame it on me But now I blame it on you You showed that I can`t be happy you showed me angels can die you showed me you never can make things right. You blame it on my gift you say I will end up alone. Well it doesn’t matter I may be broken, limp, or scattered into million pieces. But I will always blame it on you. You broke it, my heart; you tore it into millions of pieces, and you re-colored it black. But well I will just end up here as the dark angel.

Out, cause I be running troubles But still won’t even stumble Just let it out, no mumble Keep a jumble n’ rumble Truth is, I don’t even know who it is Who’s got me like this but Yet I am still firm Of who I am Of what I’ll always be Of how I’ll never change for the sake of me Pleasure meeting you, the name is Chris.

Is ending a life ever justifiable? This question has many viable answers depending on different points of view, making it one of the most debatable topics worldwide. Euthanasia mainly consists of the decision a person makes to stop living because he doesn’t have his full capacities and health to continue with his life. It is completely different from suicide because this is a choice made due to the person’s conditions and quality of life. However, not everyone agrees. The point of view changes depending on the culture, education, and, the most influential, religion. Should euthanasia not be allowed by laws, since it deals with the freedom of choice of the person and it is his or her own life? Who has the power to decide to end a life or not? There are different types of euthanasia; giving the person a lethal injection or it can also be caused by not giving the person the necessary drugs and other cares to survive. Most of the times it happens voluntarily because the person believes that living in the condition he or she does is not worth it. However, there are many cases in which the family decides without the request of the patient. Most of these involuntary cases happen when a person is unconscious or has limited mental capacities. Unfortunately this is a difficult decision to make and, as
18 *
such, can cause great conflicts within the family. Even though euthanasia can be seen as something terrible, if you or some-
one you love needs it, you can change your mind. When a person is suffering from an incurable condition, he might want to end his life. Until what point is it worth prolonging life if you are not enjoying it at all, but you are only in perpetual agony? Euthanasia provides a way to relieve a person from
extreme pain. Additionally, when the quality of life is low and the person is totally dependent on someone else it is also a way to stop the misery. Being unhealthy is not only painful physically, but also emotionally, causing the person to become moody and mostly, depressed. The sick person can feel sometimes that he or she is insignificant or even a pain for the ones who take care of him. Therefore, dying is sometimes for the ill, the best option to rest from this feeling. An unhealthy person is not the only one affected by the sickness; families also suffer by having to deal with someone that is in terrible conditions, knowing that there is no recovery. For example, Christine had a stable life, until her father got sick. She had to quit her job and struggle to pay for her father’s medicines for one year. That whole year they both suffered horribly; her father had to lie in bed all the time and got worse as time passed, until finally he died. Christine’s lifestyle changed drastically during that perios of time, trying to do everything she could to get the money. These types of stories depict how families lose control of their lives. They struggle to get the medicines and have economic problems, since the treatment
of terminal illnesses are generally expensive. They might even stop plans they had for their future and, besides, the emotional pain, from the sickness of the person, can lead to them feeling that they will never be able to regain control of their life. As mentioned before, another issue that is argued in favor of euthanasia is medical resources. Patients with terminal ailments usually consume a high quantity of medicines, usually ones that have a higher cost. Therefore, there are many medical resources used for people to live longer, however, since there is no cure, they end up living in poor health conditions. If a person can choose euthanasia freely and wants to do it, it would bring a double benefit. Not only would the will of the patient be respected, but also, there would be many medical resources freed. These resources could be used better in people who can get cured and are likely to live for many years. Nonetheless, there is another perspective. Euthanasia can be negative because no matter the circumstances it means killing a person. Some people think that doctors are supposed to make people get better and should not be involved in causing death. The people who oppose Euthanasia also argue that, eventhough it is a personal choice, the act of killing involves two. Therefore, the physician would become an accomplice of causing death and this is unacceptable for an ethic society.
Another aspect that people take on account is religion, which also influences many people in their way of seeing things. Since religion has concerns with life and death, for many, their beliefs make them think that euthanasia is not moral. According to a survey done by York University, people’s opinion towards euthanasia changes according to their religion. 55% of the Catholic sureyed said that the person has the right to choose, 36% disagree and 9% were undecided. 62% of the Jewish agreed, 22% disagreed and 16% were undecided. On the other hand, there is a drastic difference with atheist. 73% of the Atheist agreed, 19% disagreed and 10% were undecided. People who choose euthanasia usually have had mental issues before or suicidal tendencies; therefore, it is important to analyze the past of the patient. People with terminal illness could look for alternatives. Instead of ending their lives, they could try to make their last days worth living by spending time with people they love. However, if the patient suffers too much or the illness cuases them to live in horrible conditions, enjoying is not an option.
said. All throughout the year he heard most of the members of his family requesting for him to be disconnected, letting him die. He suffered, because he wanted to live and if the decision was taken he would die any minute. However, his mother never gave permission to do it, and when he went out of the comma he was very thankful. Now he is enjoying, and has many years of life left. There are two ways of seeing every aspect of life. Euthanasia is not the exception. However, both of them have strong arguments that are very persuasive. Therefore, the opinion about this is very personal and many don’t even know which side to pick. Is it unfair to not help a suffering person die? Shouldn’t it be a free personal choice? Is it fair to die with dignity? Or is euthanasia murder and suicide? Does it go against religion? Is it fair not to free up medical resources for someone who can use of them to get better? These questions will never have a definite answer, everyone has different ideas, culture and ways of seeing life that make them think and act in different ways. t*
Sometimes, when the person is unconscious the family has the right to decide whether or not to keep him alive. This can be seen as unethical because no one knows for sure what the will of the patient is. One case shows there was a man who stayed in comma for a year. He could not move anything, but heard everything people

recordar Por: Hanna Nessim y Manuela Jaramillo, clase 2012
Clase 1962
