MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Spring is one of the most rewarding and exciting times to be a professor, because that’s when the greatest number of students graduate, that’s when the awards ceremonies occur, and that’s where we get to see the true height of student accomplishments. This year was no exception. We had the opportunity to celebrate and showcase students from each of our concentrations at an awards celebration and are excited to highlight and share all their achievements with each of you.

Much of management is about relationships – how to build, develop, and maintain relationships with all types of stakeholders. We enjoy connecting with our students and look forward to staying connected as those students graduate and become alumni representing (1) the University of Nebraska Omaha, (2) the College of Business Administration, and (3) the Management Department.

Let us know about your success along the way so we can share it with others. After all,

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP

COLLABORATION | COMMUNICATION | PROBLEM-SOLVING

Versatile and portable, Management & Leadership is ideal for students looking to gain a broad range of skills that will prepare them to manage organizations and lead people. The concentration is structured around 5 Power Skills that are cultivated in every course. All Management & Leadership students kick-start their skill development in three foundational courses. After completing these courses, students can choose to take a deeper dive by completing one of two tracks.

The Managing Organizations Track centers on how to manage organizations by focusing on concepts such as operational effectiveness, structure, and competitive advantage. The Leading People Track focuses on leading others, including individuals and teams, by highlighting the skills needed to motivate and engage a diverse workforce and collaborating in teams for high performance. Through these two tracks students enter the workforce with a greater understanding of their role as leaders.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

PEOPLE | ENGAGEMENT | PERFORMANCE

Imagine helping an organization to create and maintain a culture that supports employee growth and development, fosters innovation and collaboration, and leads to success for both the organization and each employee. Think about the satisfaction of finding talented people to join the organization and watching them flourish in their careers. Picture yourself working side by side with managers to help them achieve great results through effectively working with their employees. All of these dreams, and plenty more, can result from studying Human Resource Management.

UNO is proud to be aligned with the HR curriculum guidelines of the Society for Human Resource Management. UNO is the only university in the NU system that holds this designation, and it ensures that our students graduate with all the essential knowledge to hit the ground running in the HR profession. If you study HR at UNO, you can confidently enter the field of HR knowing that you have mastered all the vital information to be successful. There are also many opportunities for students to work in an HR-related Internship. And, our students are eligible to sit for the HR certification exam (SHRM-CP) in their final year of study. This is a major differentiator when students hit the job market.

ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION OF STUDENTS

"When you’re younger, it’s very normal to graduate high school and go to college, which is what I did, but even then, there’s so many experiences you haven’t had yet or pathways you haven’t explored. As you learn more about new things, maybe what you want to do changes. It’s ok to deviate from the ‘4-year plan’ to find your passion. Be open minded and find out what you care about."
