LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Supporters and Members of the Academy, I am writing this letter from my dining room table, my makeshift workstation, while we wait for the cloud of COVID-19 to pass. It goes without saying that this year has been remarkable—one that history books will remember for a long time. We have all been affected by the pandemic, yet how it has played out in our personal lives has differed.

For the Scholars Academy, the pandemic disrupted two of the highlights I look forward to each year. Despite our plans for a bigger and better Year-End Celebration in April, we unfortunately had to cancel when it was clear large gatherings would not be safe. However, even more disappointing was the cancellation of the 2017 cohort’s study abroad trip to Xalapa, Mexico, originally scheduled for May. As we look forward to the 2020-2021 academic year, the pandemic still lingers and has required us to adjust our expectations and plans, while still finding ways to move forward as a program—developing students into the business leaders they will soon become.

Despite these challenges, my optimism is high. The situation has forced us to think creatively about how to grow community and keep moving toward our goals. We are finding new ways to do things—like using Zoom to hear from business professionals outside of the Omaha area, merging the freshman and sophomore retreats into one large event at a later date, and exploring more ways for Scholars to be involved in the global community. After all, one phrase that can sum up these times is: necessity is the mother of invention.

I hope all of you are staying safe, healthy, and in community.

MISSION The CBA Scholars Academy invests in the present and future of high-achieving business students. We are equipping Scholars to make a positive impact in their communities by providing challenging coursework in the classroom, connections to businesses and thought-leaders in the field, and unique opportunities for growth in self-awareness.

The Scholars Academy meets these goals by providing: • Courses, taught by award-winning faculty, that the Scholars complete throughout their four years in the Academy.

• Room for organic relationships and mentorship by matching Scholars to business professionals for a year-long mentorship program.

• Space and support for student-led community service projects.

• An annual scholarship of at least $5,000 to each Scholar to help with tuition and education costs.

• A study abroad trip junior year, offset by a generous stipend.

• Annual retreats for each cohort to build community.

HISTORY An honors program specifically for business students was the longtime vision of former Dean Louis Pol and CBA faculty. Following financial gifts from the Virginia Pettengill Estate, Carl Mammel, and Dennis and Ruth Duffy, that dream began to take shape in summer 2014 with the hiring of the first director.

After nearly a year of developing programming and recruiting high school seniors, the director and faculty committee selected the first cohort of 20 incoming freshmen in spring 2015. Additional cohorts of 20 have been added every year, and the Academy has maintained a retention rate of more than 90 percent.

The first Scholars graduated from the College of Business Administration in December 2018.

SCHOLARS ACADEMY COURSES As part of the Academy, Scholars enroll in small, specialized courses. The cohort courses combine community engagement, guest speakers, case studies, research, and international travel to enhance the educational experience for students who want to be challenged within a close-knit community.

Accounting 2010 covers basic concepts and assumptions underlying financial accounting; basic structure of accounting; the accounting cycle; external financial statements of the enterprise with emphasis on the corporation; income determination; accounting for and reporting of assets, liabilities and owners’ equity; analysis and reporting of cash flows; and financial statement analysis.

Fall (Freshman Year): In the fall, freshmen in the CBA Scholars Academy enroll in a zero-credit hour seminar course, taught by the Scholars Academy director. This course provides Scholars the opportunity to learn about their Gallup Strengths, network with other CBA Scholars and staff, and create strategies for connecting with business professionals.

Microeconomics is an introduction to economic principles, decision making and policies affecting product and resource markets. Particular emphasis is on price, output and input decisions by individuals and firms under various market conditions and it is an introduction to the fundamentals of international trade.

Students learn about the factors, opportunities and pressures that lead to ethical dilemmas, and develop their understanding of foundations and processes that encourage and reward ethical decision-making and behaviors. Examples sourced from case studies and current events are provided.

CBA SCHOLARS ACADEMY ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an international business and cultural experience through a study tour in a selected international location. Students develop an understanding of the factors that affect international business decisions by visiting American companies operating abroad and foreign companies that export goods and services to the U.S.

ACADEMY COACH PROGRAM The Academy is committed to creating opportunities for Scholars to learn from business professionals in the Omaha community. From September to April, the Academy Coach program allows Scholars to receive guided mentorship. Each coach meets with two Scholars once a month. These meetings provide Scholars the opportunity to seek advice and guidance from their coaches, learn more about career fields, build professional connections, improve their skills, and discover their possible career path after graduation.

Coaches’ dedication to our Scholars is remarkable. In addition to mentoring Scholars, coaches plan business visits that large groups of Scholars can attend during the academic year. Scholars learn more about culture, internships, and opportunities available at key organizations. Business visits usually involve company tours, panel discussions with directors and managers, and more.

CONGRATULATIONS, 2016 COHORT! JAY ANDERSEN MAY 2020 Jay is from La Vista, Nebraska and concentrated her business degree on marketing and management. Previous jobs have a marketing consultant at Venn Market Strategy, a content creator for UNMC, a brand ambassador for Amazon Prime, and a finance intern for Conagra. She is now a global marketing intern at Valmont, while she earns her master’s in communications at UNO. Jay studied abroad in Hong Kong and England, where she was presented with many unique travel experiences. Jay’s advice is, “Organization is key. Make lists.”

MICHAEL BROOKS MAY 2020 Michael is from Nashville, Tennessee. Michael graduated with a concentration in business finance. He has a passion for collecting coins, which has spearheaded his first business venture. He is now an investor servicer at TD Ameritrade. “Your education can only take you so far. Do what makes you happy whether that means pursuing a higher education, creating a business, or helping people.”

2016 COHORT MCKENZIE BRUCE DECEMBER 2019 McKenzie is from Snyder, Nebraska and pursued concentrations in accounting and real estate. During her undergraduate career she was a property management intern for Union Pacific, a financial management scholar (FMS) for the FDIC, and a tax intern at Lutz. She joined Lutz as a full-time staff accountant after graduation. McKenzie was actively involved in Chi Omega, Beta Gamma Sigma, Rho Epsilon, and the Thompson Learning Community. Her advice to younger Scholars is, “Take any opportunity you can. Every opportunity leads to another.”

VICTORIA EREMEEVA DECEMBER 2019 Victoria is from Russia. She graduated with a concentration in marketing and a minor in management. During college, Victoria worked in digital marketing. She is a social media influencer and builds online fitness coaching programs. She has continued this work after graduation and hopes to one day start her own digital marketing agency. Victoria says, “Take every travel opportunity you get.”

ALEJANDRA ESCOBAR SERRANO AUGUST 2020 Alejandra is from Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated with a double major in business administration with an economics concentration and political science. Alejandra worked for a nonprofit, interned in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is now working on a congressional campaign. She was an active member of Students for Microenterprise. Alejandra is proud of being a Gates Millennium Scholar and being selected as a Public Policy Fellow at Princeton and a Harry Truman Fellowship Finalist. She says, “You learn more from a difficult journey than an easy route.”

JORDEN HANSEN DECEMBER 2019 Jorden is from Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated with concentrations in marketing, management, and economics. Jorden’s prior experiences include global marketing with Valmont, business with Kiewit and human resources with Union Pacific. Jorden is now pursing her master’s in economics at UNO while working in investor relations at Valmont. She is also the Scholars Academy graduate assistant. Last year, she received undergraduate economics student of the year. “Don’t be nervous to seek guidance from an older Scholar for personal or professional advice!”

2016 COHORT SAMANTHA LANGFORD DECEMBER 2019 Sami is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was a collegiate athlete on the Women’s Golf team with concentrations in business finance and banking & financial markets. Sami says, “I love my major because it involves the analytical side of numbers but allows me to have really great face-toface contacts with people.” During her career at UNO, Sami worked as a licensed insurance agent at State Farm. Following graduation, Sami moved back to Sioux Falls and continued to follow her passion at State Farm.

Sami dreams to one day have her own insurance agency.

DYLAN LOERTS DECEMBER 2019 Dylan is from Elkhorn, Nebraska and graduated with concentrations in business finance, banking, and investment science & portfolio management. Dylan was the VP of Maverick Banking Association and is a Pi Kappa Alpha alumnus. He was an intern at Union Pacific in financial planning and analysis for nearly two years. He now attends North Carolina State University pursuing his master’s degree in analytics.

Dylan’s advice to younger members is, “Do as much as you can. Seek out and take every opportunity you can. You may surprise yourself how much of a workload you can take on.”

JAKOB MACH DECEMBER 2019 Jakob is from Omaha, Nebraska and chose the concentrations of marketing and management with a supply chain minor. Jakob worked as an analytics intern for the Omaha Storm Chasers and an accounting intern with the Lund Company. He also worked in workplace solutions at Mutual of Omaha where he joined full-time after graduation. Outside of school, Jakob is proud to be a member of the Omaha Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. “It is easy to compare yourself to others around you in college. Focus on being the best version of yourself and keep yourself busy; you will be glad you did.”

DAVID MATA TBD David Mata is from North Platte, Nebraska. He has a concentration in economics, which has given him greater insights and perspective to view the problems of the world, and a minor in Spanish. David currently works in the CABLab in Mammel Hall and appreciates the technology skills and professional network he has gained from this position. David suggests taking classes you enjoy and get something out of, not just the easy A. “Your GPA, scholarships and certifications will eventually lose importance, but the knowledge, network and memories created are everlasting.”

2016 COHORT CJ MONAHAN DECEMBER 2020 CJ is from Omaha, Nebraska. He is graduating with a concentration in real estate. During his undergraduate career he was involved in Pi Kappa Alpha, CEO, and Entrepreneurial Living Learning community (ELLC).

CJ is most proud of the company he has built, Monahan Lawn Care & Property Services, LLC. After graduation, he is continuing his path as an entrepreneur to continuously improve and grow his business. CJ reminds his peers, “Balance is key in college. Work hard. Play hard!”

LAUREN O’MALLEY MAY 2020 Lauren is from Omaha, Nebraska. Lauren will graduate with concentrations in business finance, banking, investment science & portfolio management, and marketing. She worked at SCORR Marketing, was a business development intern at Securities America, and was a rotational intern for Carson Group. During her undergraduate career she has been involved in many on-campus organizations such as FMA, SMA, Maverick Investment Club, and Student Activities Budget Committee.

Lauren is now getting her MBA at UNO while working in business development at On-Line Imaging and as a graduate assistant for NCITE.

LIZBETH PEREZ HERNANDEZ TBD Lizbeth is from Mexico. She is working towards a degree in economics and management with a minor in political science. Lizbeth worked as a peer advisor, interned with the Nebraska Enterprise Fund, and worked as an interpreter for the Migrant Education Program for OPS. She is currently working at Lincoln Financial Group as an Underwriting Intern.

During her time at UNO, she has been involved in the Goodrich Program, UNO Student Government, FLC, Economics Club, CEO, and Students for Microenterprise Development.

ALISON RASZLER MAY 2020 Alison is from Elkhorn, Nebraska. She graduated with supply chain management, marketing, and management concentrations. Alison was an audit intern at Cintas, a project management intern TD Ameritrade, and a global business services intern at Conagra. After graduation, Alison joined Conagra full-time on the consumer care team. She was involved in a variety of on-campus organizations such as DSP, CEO, Resident Hall Association, SMA, and Scott Housing Council. Alison was recognized as last year’s CBA Student of the Year. “Don’t be obsessed with what’s next.”

2016 COHORT ZACH TABOR DECEMBER 2019 Zach Tabor is from Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated with concentrations in marketing and entrepreneurship. Zach worked in the CABLab during his undergraduate career and held officer positions in both CEO and SMA. He is working as a marketing assistant at AccuQuilt. Zach’s advice to Scholars is: “Time management. Plan ahead and pick classes that help you manage your time (e.g. Purposely put a break in between classes to work on homework). If you stay on top of assignments, you can enjoy your weekends!”

GARRETT UECKER MAY 2020 Garrett is from Edgar, Nebraska. He graduated with two majors—business administration, with a concentration in management, and criminal justice.

He worked as an intern for Firstar Fiber and a park management intern for the Minnesota DNR. He later joined UNO’s Outdoor Venture Center where he was promoted from a student worker to a manager. Garrett is now working on founding a non-profit focused on behavioral therapy through outdoor recreation. Garrett said, “A lot of people think they must work so they can afford to do the things they love but odds are you can make a living doing it if you try.”

CHRISTOPHER WINCHESTER MAY 2019 Christopher is from Omaha, Nebraska. His concentrations were management, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Chris held a variety of positions from social media manager to ecommerce analyst, research assistant, and event planner. He also participated in CEO, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma, SMA, and was a cohort and honors program representative. In 2019, Chris was recognized as UNO and CBA Student of the Year. Chris finished his MBA from UNO and now attends the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management earning his PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in work and organizations.

SAMANTHA YOUNG DECEMBER 2019 Sammy is from Syracuse, Nebraska. She graduated with a concentration in accounting. “Accounting is all about serving your clients well and figuring out the best options for them. Each client is a different puzzle to solve, and I love that aspect the most.” She previously worked as an audit intern at KPMG and a tax intern at BKD. Sammy is now getting her master’s in accounting at UNO and working as a graduate assistant for the CBA Capstone Cup. Her advice to younger students is, “Take risks and always do what is best for you. It might not be what everyone else is doing, but always be yourself.”

NEW CLASS 2020 COHORT In January 2020, 20 high-achieving high school seniors were selected for the 2020 cohort of the CBA Scholars Academy.

Collectively, these incoming freshmen boast an average high school GPA of 4.09 and average placement in the top 12 percent of their graduating classes. Representing 18 different high schools, they come from 15 cities spanning four states.

APPLICATION PROCESS

ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES

Candidates for the Scholars Academy submitted applications their senior year of high school. In addition to test scores, grades, and class rank, the selection committee evaluated candidates on supplemental materials, including:

During the selection process, the committee looked for incoming freshmen who would most likely demonstrate the following traits:

A COVER LETTER introducing the applicant and showed why their experiences, interests, and passions would make them a good fit for the Academy.

A RÉSUMÉ showed commitment to the applicant’s community and school through volunteer service and extracurricular activities.

The selection committee invited the top 40 applicants to Mammel Hall for a day of interviews. During Interview Day, candidates attended a formal lunch, participated in a group interview with a faculty member, had a one-on-one interview with a business professional, and worked on a group project with other candidates.

From that pool, the committee selected the top students to create the incoming cohort.

FRESHMAN RETREAT The 2019 cohort spent the day at Zorinsky Lake on August 23—the Friday before their freshman year started at UNO. For the first time, the cohort met the group that would be their “teammates” for the next four years.

The day was filled with team-building exercises and canoing.

That evening, Scholars from all cohorts joined the freshmen for a picnic.

SOPHOMORE RETREAT In September, the 2018 cohort spent three days and two nights at Mahoney State Park. The Scholars worked on personal development, exploring more of their Gallup

Strengths. The group discussed their visions for the future of the Scholars Academy and how to make their goals a reality.

SUPPORT THE ACADEMY The Scholars Academy is only possible through private financial gifts, which fund scholarships, international experiences, and Scholar programming. Without these, the Scholars Academy could not invest in the lives of these high-achieving students.

SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE Scholarships play an important role in recruiting and retaining the best business students. With this financial support, the Scholars are able to be partners with their communities, whether that’s being president of a student organization, creating and managing a community service project, or mentoring the next cohort of leaders.

Each Scholar receives a minimum $5,000 annual scholarship, awarded over four years, for a total of $20,000—all of which are provided through private gifts. Our next goal is to offer each Scholar a minimum $7,000 annual scholarship, which will only be possible through additional gifts.

CBA SCHOLARS WIDEN THEIR HORIZONS International experiences are a vital part of a Scholar’s experience in the program.

Studying abroad allows students to experience first-hand the dynamics at play in today’s increasingly connected world, all while making them more capable and more marketable to future employers.

The annual study abroad trip costs around $60,000 and we are looking for partial or complete sponsors for this life-changing experience for our junior class.

EXPERIENCES ENRICH THEIR EDUCATION The Scholars Academy also provides activities designed to create camaraderie and teamwork within and between each of the cohorts through retreats, community service projects, and other scheduled learning opportunities. Without these activities, the Academy would be only a scholarship program instead of an immersive leadership development program.
