This building on the West side of our site is unappealing to look at making sure the views are either limited or blocked with vegetation.
This building blocks most of the South sun, so we had to work around this condition of how to get light inside.
Site Analysis
• Vegetation consists of deciduous trees along eastern side of the building. • Greenery on eastern side of building; allows for outdoor gathering •Winds; The winter winds are represented by the red arrow because they are unwanted. •Sun high in sky during summer • Low in sky in winter; penetrate through clerestory more but will bounce off wall and dissolve • Building blocks most of northern sun

Design Goals
Watershed analysis
•Include outdoor space, this can allow workers for outdoor meetings, lunch, or a place to get away for a few minutes maybe make a phone call. •Add skylights to roof for maximum sunlight inside; use less electricity. •Exterior rain garden or tree pits to collect water during heavy storms. •Operable windows on the South west can allow summer breeze to pass through lowering energy use. •Focus on materials that were made from recycled waste, or can be recycled at the end of their life "cradle-to-cradle" approach. •Design should provide a healthy space that promotes productivity and focuses on the well-being of their workers. This can be included in biophilic elements. •Block unwanted views with vegetation, this also allows for better air quality. •Incorporate motion censored LED lights.
Concept: Feeling of being Underwater Inspired by kelp forest, underwater gives a sense of mystery that is muffled and whimsical. Views in the distance are distorted with dark spaces that progress to bright and light space near the surface.
Plan inspired by mirrored maze, where you don’t know what’s around the corner.
Precedents HS House
Inspired by the handling of light and sense of water. The translucent walls give off a hue of blue resembling water. The metaphysical use of the materials confuse reality with dreams.
Yandex Offices
Dynamic volumes break up the space and create smaller rooms. These spaces are divided by partitions.
“Under” Underwater Restaurant
Rough concrete was chosen to mimic an artificial reef. The goal is to give a new perspective on how you see the world.

Windows on East and West façade are shaded by trees in the summer, diffusing the sun rays going directly into the building. The carpet on the floors where the workstations are diffuses the light and stops it from bouncing back into the space. Overhangs and vines form the green roof blocks direct sun when higher in the sky; near noon. Skylights will allow direct light from above to penetrate to the center of the space.

Windows on East and West façade allow sun to come in when the trees loose their leaves. This allows heat to enter the building. Drop ceilings diffuse the light coming from above as well as operable solar shades in the clerestory.

Thermal Comfort & Acoustical Analysis
• Polished concrete flooring used in circulation spaces, carpet tile used in spaces such as workstations and lounge to absorb sound and prevent echo.

Statements UNIVERSAL DESIGN To adhere to ADA compliance all hallways are a minimum of 44” wide. Upon entering the reception desk has a 42” high transaction counter as well as 34” accessible counter for wheelchair accessibility. All sinks are wall mounted allowing leg space underneath. The corridors have linear lights that guide the user from one area to the next, as well as signage. All door handles are lever to make for easy access into all rooms. To stop glare motorized roller shades are utilized during the day when needed. To help with ergonomics adjustable mesh chairs are uses in the workstations as well as the offices. Other lounge seating is optional in the lounge and focus rooms based off different needs. Acoustical elements such as baffled ceilings, acoustical ceiling tiles, and waterfall walls are utilized to minimize noise control.
ERGONOMICS Ergonomics at the workstations include a height adjustable swivel chair with mesh backing and arm rests. The mesh allows for proper air circulation to the user and while it is not in use. The armrests allow for proper forearm support so they are not at an angle when typing. Different height desks can be found throughout the office in places such as the focus rooms, huddle rooms, and cafe where workers can go based off their need. 120 workstations allow the user for adequate work space for computer use, phone calls, and writing space. Storage for each workstation is off to the sides so there is proper space for the users legs.
COLORS Color palette of blue-green with pops of yellow. Colors such as bluegreen are pulled from a view of under the water with pops of yellow of the sunlight. Green is restorative used within the greenery in the workstations. Blue is tranquil to give off a relaxing space as you walk down the hallways, and yellow is used in pops of color to bring energy to the space. To make all these colors cohesive a French gray is used on areas like the walls.

Low Energy
Like the calmest of moving water these spaces are more dense with 10’ high ceilings. These spaces include offices, support rooms, and cleaning closets where it is quieter and undisturbed.
Medium Energy
As the current starts to pick up it creates more movement beneath the surface. As seen here the ceiling starts to protrude up which represents the activity meant for the space. These locations include the workstation space, lobby, and education area. These spaces are meant to have more movement and activity flowing through the space.
High Energy
Like moving water during a windy day these spaces with a more staggered ceiling promote a high energy space. These spaces include the café and lounge where it is encouraged to do many activities such as tennis table.

Philadelphia History Watershed • Gives overview of population, length of watershed 1702 • Current Streams of that time. 1902 • Streams were filled in due to flourishing new city. 1940 • Miles of streams disappeared making watershed look disturbingly bare. 2020 • Improvements of the watershed will result in healthy, vibrant green city.

• Overall material goal is to be able to reuse the material at the end of its life cycle or to be recycled.

• All Materials chosen in consideration how they will be impacted from production to the end of it’s use. • By improving the materials we use we are improving the streams and watersheds nearby. • Ergonomics material such as mesh chairs allows for better indoor air quality. • Repurposed materials such as repurposed rusted iron from boats helps keep the metal out of the landfills. • Materials and furniture are local limiting CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
