Born in Canton, China, Yem Sun “George” Gor was inducted into the Army Air Forces in December 1942. He trained in the radar unit at Camp Crowder, MO and was stationed in New Guinea. One of his most memorable stories was when his Liberty ship, Cape of San Juan, left San Francisco towards New Guinea and was sunk November 11,1943 by Japanese torpedoes, about 200 miles from the Fiji Islands. He spent more than 30 hours in the waters before being rescued and subsequently hospitalized at Fiji. He received the Purple Heart before being discharged from Ft. Sam Houston, TX in October 1945, with the rank of Sergeant. He was a successful grocer with two independent stores serving the communities in east Houston. He was married to Ngan T.Gor for 67 years before her passing in 1997 and welcomed 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren. Staff Sergeant Yem Sun “George” Gor passed away on November 21, 2005 at the age of 95. We are proud and thankful of his service and for all the brave Chinese American men and women who sacrificed for our country.
