It’s been a great year in the beef industry with strong long term demand in front of us and presently. Top genetics are fetching considerable premiums over commodity cattle. We are pleased to announce our Value Added Feeder and Replacement buying program that we partner with Nextgen Feedyards. We are buying truckload lots of steers out of our Brangus or Charolais genetics with the goal of bringing value added prices on your calf crop. We are also interested in buying replacement females or in marketing these highly sought after cattle. We will actively bid on these and may not get all of them bought, but will help our customers obtain extra value if we do not get them bought. We also look forward as we go in sharing that data with our customers and discuss tailored breeding to meet customer objectives.
Many areas of the country have seen widespread and needed rainfall and hopefully we can all have a good summer. We are pushing forward on our genetic progression and over the last year have seen our genetics well received in both the purebred and commercial sector. Our number one goal is the commercial market. We have to produce cattle that go out in the real world and make it happen for our customers. Cattle that hold up, functional, environmentally adaptable and that also can grade in the feed yard. We are breeding for not only performance, but the right type and kind and variety to go to a lot of different geographic areas, plus align with varying cow herd needs.
We are excited about this fall and beyond as we start the new cycle of sales events as we are hosting our 20th Anniversary Fall Production Sale and believe we are seeing incremental improvement in our future offerings. We thank our genetic partners for trusting in our program and that are participating in both our bull and female sales. Our goal as we stated last year is to help build purebred programs in Texas and around the country to new levels and build similar genetics to what we see our discriminating cattlemen demands. We are grateful to them and with our Value Added calf buying program believe that we all can continue to drive profitable genetics for our commercial customers.
We look forward to a lot of our new customer relationships that we have built and also to new ones that happen in the future. Please feel free to reach out to myself, Mark, Todd, Justin or Dustin our marketing and genetics team here at Cavender Ranches. We all wear a lot of hats and can assist in your many questions or needs.
All the best,
CAVENDER’S TRADITION OF QUALITY CONTINUES TO BUILD
MARK COWAN
CAVENDER RANCHES
Much needed rain has fallen in Texas throughout the spring and continued into early summer and for that we are grateful. We are also grateful for all our friends and customers who teamed up to make the past year at Cavender Ranches an overwhelming success. The continued acceptance of our registered and commercial seedstock is gratifying. Thanks to you we marketed over 1700 head of cattle in the past year for over $8,000,000 in revenue.
It is important to us these cattle go to their new homes and perform as expected. We want them to add value to your program and we want to do our part in creating more value with Cavender genetics. We have introduced Cavender’s Value Added program in this newsletter and on our website because we believe in our product, that it will add value and that customer service doesn’t stop with the sale. We value your feedback and look forward to continuing to build more profitable cattle together.
We are gearing up for a great Fall Sale Season. Already this year we have seen record prices on fat cattle and feeder calves alike. We are excited about this year’s group of coming two-year-old bulls. We have them sorted into like groups and they are making the summer well. As you can see in this newsletter, there are some really exciting young herd sire prospects to be offered this fall as well as top end range bulls. We are starting with over 215 coming two Brangus, Ultrablack and Charolais and the quality runs deep. This doesn’t count the great crop of fall yearlings currently on gain test that should be arriving at Neches River the first part of September. All of these bulls will be sold at Neches River Ranch, Jacksonville, TX November 16th and at Briggs Tri-Star Sale in Bloomington, TX October 26th.
In addition to this great bull offering, we will sell 85 registered females from Cavender Brangus as well as our friends and customers. We will also feature a powerful set of commercial females, 550 head strong that will feature Pairs, Breds and Open heifers.
We invite you to stop by Cavender Ranches and see these cattle for yourselves. We want you to know you are always welcome if you are in the neighborhood. There is nothing we like better than showing our cattle and sharing ideas. We value your opinion and hope you can come and see what we are so excited about.
Dustin Kennedy grew up in nearby Rusk, TX. Woking with cattle and horses has been a lifetime calling. He began managing CX cattle Company in Rusk, Texas in 2004. CX was a 750 head commercial cow calf operation. They weaned and preconditioned all their calves as well as 4 to 500 outside purchased cattle.
In 2009 Dustin began his career with Cavender Ranches as he worked with Justin Matejka at the Neches River division and as Gain Test Manager of the Cavender Bulls.
In 2013 he took an opportunity to work for White Oak Ranch, Alto, TX. Whie Oak is a 1000 head commercial cow calf operation. They also preconditioned and straightened out their own steers prior to
marketing or feeding them as conditions dictated. In addition to cattle, White Oak also raised performance ranch horses out of their cutting bred brood mares and performance studs.
In 2021 Dustin returned to Cavender Ranches to manage their Registered cow herd, a position he continues to hold. “I have enjoyed the challenge in working with Joe Cavender and Justin Matejka to build a cowherd appealing to both fellow seed stock breeders and commercial cattlemen,” says Dustin. He continues, “Pushing the envelope with our registered herd of females while never loosing sight of their ability to work in the real world is an exciting part of what we do. Building cattle that work and building the trust from our customers is the most rewarding aspect of my job.”
“It’s great being a part of Cavender Ranches. To be successful takes a lot of effort and hard work on the part of everyone. I am fortunate to work with a great group of dedicated people and certainly appreciate the work and effort Aubrey Mclure and his team put into making our cow herd a success,” adds Dustin.
We appreciate each of our customers, friends and cooperators who entrusted us with the products of their
and who purchased Cavender Seedstock both commercial females and registered bulls and females. We will continue to earn your business and build more profitable beef cattle.

CAVENDERS VALUE ADDED PROGRAM
We are actively seeking Cavender Brangus genetics to bid on and buy in truck load lots. Whether you are a bull buyer using our genetics on your cattle, or purchasing commercial females through our sales, we would like the opportunity to bid on your calves at weaning. We are comfortable giving you a bid on your ranch or consigning to on-line auctions, let us know by contacting Justin or Todd. If you would like us to partner with you on your cattle to spread your risk, we can do that also. We may not be able to win the bid on all of them, but we will do our best to add value to your program. A look at the feeding results chart of our steers in this section will give you an idea why we are anxious to help and capable of providing assistance.
We recognize customer service goes a long way in adding value to our Brand. We want to be a partner in your sustainable production scheme and look forward to growing our relationship. We want to be a part of growing your cattle business and assisting you in adding value after your purchase.
We believe sustainable beef production is all encompassing. Stock cows must fit the environment. They must be able to convert forage to pounds of beef and they must bring a superior beef calf to
the pens every year utilizing ranch available resources without major supplementation weather permitting. In the South that means heat tolerance, superior longevity, udder quality and fertility. If female, a high percentage of those calves must qualify as replacement heifers for your own herd or others. The steer calves must be capable of gaining in the feed lot and hanging profitable carcasses on the rail through a combination of gain, grade and yield. Cavender Ranch Bulls are capable of contributing to a balanced and sustainable beef production program.
At Cavender Ranches, we try to take the guesswork out. We have fed over 12,000 head of our own cattle over the past 25 years. In the chart below you can see the results of the past 4 years of our progress. We have harvested and collected carcass data on over 2,900 head of Cavender Ranch cattle since 2020. The total includes, cull registered animals, cull heifers and steers from our commercial herd. It includes Cavender Ranch bulls on commercial Brangus, F1 Tigers and crossbred commercial females. We think it is a pretty impressive data set. Especially when considering it is all the harvest results, with nothing held back!
Cavender Ranches Carcass Data 2020-2023
We have been feeding our own steers for over 20 years. We are please with the results and we have been documenting and collecting the carcass data on our Caender Brangus and Neches River steers and non-replacement heifers since 2020. The data below is all of the data we have, it is not a select group or groups but literally all of it. It is real world data on steers and heifers sired by Cavender Ranch bulls. We feel it is valuable to benchmark what our bulls can do on commercial cattle just like those of our customers. The harvested cattle are out of a variety of genetics on the dam side varying from multigeneration commercial Brangus cows to true F1 Angus X Brahman and F1 Tiger Stripes to Brangus sired Super Baldy dams.
The average of the past 4 years is pretty impressive we think. The Yield Grade has improved by 8 tenths of a grade as we continue to add more muscle to these cattle! At the same time we were able to hold Dressing Percentage constant at nearly 64%. We have also been able to hold our choice and prime percentages constant wile improving yeild grade. The cattle gained in the feedlot and hung on the rail. That pretty much sums up our goals in producing the real world sires for our customers. Bigger Quality values with less waste.
Contact us if you have truckload lots of Cavender Sired steers or heifers to market. We would
to try to add value to your bottom line through either purchase or partnership.
