WELCOME BACK
FEATURED STORY
A new semester, a new environment. The Cave Hill Campus welcomes their blackbirds back for another academic year despite the challenges faced by the ongoing pandemic. The pandemic has created a unique new way of schooling that we as students must adapt to quickly in order to ensure academic success. It requires greater discipline, focus, and technological prowess. Although it may not be ideal conditions, especially for those dependent on the physical environment for effective study, we still implore you to try adjusting to the new normal. Hand hygiene, wearing of masks, and physical distancing are just a few measures we can employ, particularly on the campus, which will help us in battling the pandemic. It is our hope that one day, we will reunite in person and bring back the hustle, bustle and many activities that was once the hallmark of our beloved campus. We at the Guild are committed to effective and frequent communication with the student body, even in the face of the pandemic which forces us to remain apart. Therefore, we are pleased to announce the revival of
our beloved newspaper, THE CAVE. We hope that this publication will bring us closer together as a student family as we seek to highlight pertinent issues and stories facing our student body. In this volume of The Cave Newspaper, the Cave Hill Guild of Students hosts several columns such as helpful tips, a student spotlight, student entrepreneurs, the sports corner, games, puzzles, artwork, and much more! Once again, welcome back!

HELPFUL
TIPS FOR
SURVIVING THE UWI CAVE HILL CAMPUS Tip #1: Download your lecture recordings. After lectures, lecture recordings are usually available for viewing up to a certain period of time. If you are a student who value playbacks for writing notes you may want to consider downloading the recordings before they expire and are no longer available for viewing. Tip #2: Start your projects and assignments at the earliest opportunity. Many persons use “far due dates” as an excuse to procrastinate and put off their work. However, that only causes an eventual backlog. Starting your assignments early gives you time to focus on your tasks as they come in.
Tip #3: Join a club or association. Being a part of a club or association keeps you in tune with everyday campus activities. You stay connected, informed, and involved through the various group chats which guarantees your access to important notices on the go. Tip #4: Remember why you began this journey. Sometimes when pressure builds up we forget why we chose to do this and why we sought out UWI in the first place. So pause and remember to recenter yourself. You are already one step closer to your goal than you were yesterday. Tip #5: Make friends! You aren’t going to be here forever, so network while you can! Making friends will definitely make this journey easier for you.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
“My name is Jaliyah Rock, I am 21 years old and pursuing my undergraduate degree in International Relations with History and Economics. Currently, I am the History and Philosophy Representative for the Faculty of Humanities and Education Guild Committee, President of the UWI History Society, and founder of Humanity Barbados, an organization which provides educational materials for persons in need. I love animals, reading – right now anything non-academic – self-improvement and giving of myself to create opportunities for people empowerment because “I cannot do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that I can do”- Jana Stanfield”

The Games Committee regrettably wishes to advise that the students’ gym will remain closed until further notice. Alternatively, a new “Weekly Workouts” initiative was introduced to keep the student population engaged and active. Stay tuned in to the @cavehillguildgcc page for new workout routines every Monday.
The FSS Students’ Committee stands with our fellow lions understanding the current situation we face. As such, recordings will be available up to fourteen days after uploading. We thank all stakeholders for their understanding. For any queries or concerns, please contact us @fsscavehill on Instagram or Twitter.
The Commuters Committee hereby advises that as at September 21st 2021, there continues to only be one operational UWI shuttle that is servicing both the Bridgetown and NCF/Warrens route. Hence, students should expect delays while waiting for the shuttles and are urged to plan accordingly.
