It is my distinct pleasure as Publications Committee Chairperson of the Guild of Students to welcome you to what will soon be one of the most memorable experiences of your lives. Home to several nationalities and given talents, the Cave Hill Campus presents you with a plethora of engaging activities, sports, degree options, and not to mention, the friendships and family bonds you will soon create here. For both freshers and continuing students alike, this publication serves as a guide for all our Blackbirds to have a seamless experience. I can ensure you that by getting involved on campus and taking full advantage of the opportunity to network, you will soon recognize why the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus is indeed the most diverse. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Greetings to all new and returning students! It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus for the 2021-2022 academic year. Due to the global pandemic, the last academic year was indeed a challenging one for the Campus, however, we were able to weather the storm and persevere by harnessing the use of technology and hosting virtual classes so that teaching could continue. The Campus also created history on March 27, 2021 when the 2020 graduating class became the first cohort to graduate in fine virtual style. You made a brilliant choice to pursue your studies here at the Cave Hill Campus. On June 04, 2019, the Campus received the seven (7) years maximum allowed for Institutional Accreditation from the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC). In addition, our Faculty of Medical Sciences has received double accreditation from: the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) and the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), US Department of Education. Our Campus is very receptive to your needs and my Management Team focuses on creating the best learning environment our financial resources can afford. In fact, we heeded your requests for a return to the classroom for face-to-face instruction and we have done everything in our power to make the campus environment as safe as possible for you. However, in keeping with the country’s physical distancing protocols, we are not yet able to return to full classroom capacity, and as a result, only half of all the classes being taught this semester will be offered face-to-face. This is allowed for classes of up to 100 students. All classes exceeding 100 students will be delivered online. Due to varying reasons, however, some classes with fewer than 100 students might also be online. The timetable is the authoritative source of information on the mode of delivery for programmes and courses. A team of dedicated staff members has worked diligently to produce a timetable schedule that ensures you will be able to optimize your learning experience at Cave Hill without compromising health and safety. Our top priority remains not only your intellectual and social engagement but the

health, safety and well-being of our community as well. Until national protocols allow for the full return to the classroom, we will utilize the blended mode of face-to-face and online teaching which can be adjusted in either direction depending on the prevailing circumstances. I encourage you to become familiar and make use of the student support services available to you, such as the Oﬀice of Student Services (OSS), the Student Health Clinic and the Student Enrollment and Retention Unit (SERU). In addition, the Campus oﬀers co-curricular courses to round out your holistic education supplemented with activities hosted by country associations, clubs and societies. Feel free to indulge in these various activities which will ensure you have a balanced student life as you pursue your studies! Indeed, I am very pleased to welcome you to the Cave Hill Campus and I am elated that you chose to read your degree with us. Do enjoy your time here at Cave Hill and I wish you continued success.

MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT My name is Kyle Holder-Leach, President of the Guild of Students for the academic year 2021-2022. I would first like to congratulate you on being accepted to the most diverse of the University of The West Indies campuses, the Cave Hill Campus- Where One Flies, and All Soar! It is my hope that your time spent here will not only be academically fruitful but will lend to your holistic development as an individual. To that end, I implore you to step out of your comfort zone and take hold of each opportunity presented to you, whether it be inside of the classroom, through participating in a sport, attending an event or by joining a club or an association. It is then, through these involvements that you will be able to make the most of your student experience, here at the U.W.I Cavehill Campus. May this guide be a testament to the Guild of Students’ dedication to you and your development here on campus, for we are indeed committed to safeguarding that you eﬀectively accomplish each milestone of your university experience; through the provision of all-rounded assistance and avenues, which are intended to enhance both your academic, personal, and relational development. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPS PRESIDENT Welcome Fresher! We realize that you made the decision to pursue a postgraduate degree, and you decided to do it at the Best University in the world, Cave Hill Campus. In doing so, you are being exposed to the world of openings, and as your President, it is my job to ensure that you have the best first year experience as a postgraduate student. As CHAPS President I am honored in this Student leadership position as I walk with you this academic year as it is never a true journey without my students by my side. Within this academic year, we have lots of activities that would engage you Blackbird. Within these engagements it can benefit you the student holistically. As a blackbird it is expected of you to fully engage with everything the campus has to oﬀer. We can’t forget to mention about our CHAPS events for freshers, this is a great opportunity to experience the great life of a Blackbird and network across campus. THE GUILD OF STUDENTS The Guild of Students is the recognized Student Government on Campus. The Guild Council is the recognized means of communication between students as a body, and the authorities of the University, with Guild Council members serving on major Campus and University Bodies. It is very important as students to have a voice on campus to represent your rights, interests and concerns throughout your university life. According to its Constitution the objectives of the Guild are: • For the furthering of educational and social purposes of the University of the West Indies. • For the furthering of the common interest of members of the Guild of Students. • The advancement and promotion of unity and fraternity among the members of the Guild. All matriculated students pursuing a course of study at the University of the West Indies are full members of the Guild of Students.

THE GUILD ELECTORAL OFFICE Hey Blackbirds, we are your guild committee on elections. As a committee, we are here to ensure democratic, fair, and equal elections. We don’t discriminate against any eligible person seeking to run for office. Now don’t be shy because we have your back — we help prepare you through candidate workshops and provide adequate support. FAQS Q - What is the Guild Electoral Committee? A - The Guild Electoral Committee is the only independent and autonomous subdivision of the Guild Council. We are responsible for the execution of unbiased elections and bye elections for all candidates and voters held under the authority of the Guild. Q - What are the other responsibilities of the Guild Electoral Committee? A - Beyond planning Guild elections typically held in Semester II, we are also responsible for Recall Petitions, Referendums, and General/Special Meeting Voting (including constitutional reform). Q- Where/How can I learn more about candidates vying for a seat on the council? A- After all the vetting processes are done by this committee and candidates are approved, we have campaigning season. This is where candidates let you , Cave Hill blackbirds know what they plan to do for you. Usually, flyers will be circulated with candidate mandates and social media platforms so that you can keep up with the progress on the campaign trail. This year we as a committee want to introduce exciting commentaries and videos during the campaign trail to answer all the questions you may have before voting day. Q - So what does the committee do for the rest of the academic year? A - Plan,Prepare and Educate! There is a lot of work that goes into ensuring that all processes are ready for elections in Semester II. Hence the GEC ensures that everything is ready and put in place to ensure an efficient election season. Additionally, we aim to educate candidates and voters so that when you get your ballot, you have all the information you need to make a sound decision. Q - Are there any new initiatives we can expect from the 2021-2022 GEC? A- Yes! We have a lot of surprises for you this year! We’re revamping our social media and have an exciting new format for the highly anticipated Debate Night. Stay tuned to our social media pages for all the details on what we have in store for you Q- How can we reach out and keep abreast with information from this committee? A - Specific questions targeted towards issues with any electoral processes may be directed to our chairperson and the Guild’s Returning Officer, Ms Jaime Young at guildelectionsofficer@mycavehill. STUDENT WELFARE

Students who are genuinely in need of financial assistance can apply for the guild welfare program. We provide welfare assistance in the form of small tuition grants, rent assistance and the guild pantry. The welfare application process is now being streamlined into a two-step procedure: 1. The student assistance form needs to be filled and submitted along with the required evidence of genuine need for financial assistance. 2. An interview will be conducted with the Guild Treasury. Welfare requests normally take between 2 – 4 weeks to be processed. Applications will be accepted from September 6th to November 15th, 2021, in the first semester and January 15th to March 31st in the second semester. Other welfare initiatives for the student body include: • Quarantine packages • Examination packages • Soup Kitchens There are also many opportunities to win various prizes at events and meetings hosted by the Guild of Students.

The Cave Hill Guild of students will be oﬀering fifteen (15) scholarships to matriculated students at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. These scholarships will be broken down into the following categories: 1. Academic Excellence 2. Outstanding Contribution in Service/Extracurricular 3. Excellence in Sports To be eligible for one of these scholarships you MUST be a registered student of the UWI, Cave Hill Campus. To be considered for a Guild of Students scholarship award, you must provide the following: • The Completed Guild Scholarship Application form. • Your Curriculum Vitae • One (1) Typed Essay (500-word limit) • One (1) signed and stamped Reference Letter. All applications must be submitted no later than September 30th, 2021.

In many ways, our residents, embody the qualities of Sir Frank. His elegance, class, sophistication, intellect and belief in the power of unity. No You, No Me, But We is our compass, and it is reflective of our view, that we are at our strongest when we come together. That it is in togetherness that we achieve so much. As you embark upon this journey, know that on our Hall, you can pursue your educational aspirations with adequate access to in house facilities for studying, while immersing yourselves in the learning and sharing of diverse cultures and experiences from residents across the world in a communal environment. The Frank Worrell Hall consists of 180 single study rooms in suites of six, contained in ten (10) three-storey blocks, arranged in three clusters. Each cluster is enclosed in by a combination of garden walls and share common facilities including sub warden's apartment and laundry unit. The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the central feature of the communal life of the Hall and is located at the heart of the complex. Situated on a knoll overlooking the main campus, the complex captures a panoramic view of the beautifully laid out campus and a distant view of the Caribbean Sea. The design of the buildings reflects an architectural vernacular of the Barbadian style with modest overhangs and hipped vented gable roofs to permit natural ventilation.

SIR PHILIP SHERLOCK HALL “Dear New Sherlockite, “I’ve made some lifelong friendships that I will cherish forever” “I wouldn’t trade my experience on the Sherlock Hall for anything” “Once a Sherlockite… Always a Sherlockite” These are words you should practice saying from now, because by the end of your time on the Sherlock Hall you will be screaming them from the top of your lungs. The affluence of the Sherlock Hall lies not in its amenities, rather, you can find it in the copious assortments of cultures, friendships and experiences that you will indubitably cultivate whilst staying on the Sir Philip Sherlock Hall. I implore you to fully immerse yourself in both the Sherlock experience and every opportunity for self-enrichment you will encounter at the Cave Hill Campus. As a new blackbird, it’s going to be an onerous adjustment now that you’ve left your nest. However, let me reassure you that on your assent your Sherlock Family will be the winds that guide your wings and help them flourish. Because on the Sherlock Hall we embody the mantra No you…. It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the most prestigious and opulent hall on the Cave Hill Campus, the Sir Philip Sherlock Hall. Sherlock Hall residents or “Sherlockites” identify with a famous Jamaican proverb “Wi likkle but wi tallawah.” Despite having a comparatively low number of residents, the voices of Sherlockites can be heard echoing throughout the campus! Sherlockites attain the heights of academic success, are the most engaged in campus life and are generally the trailblazers that you see advocating for the betterment and enrichment of the Cave Hill Campus. The Sherlock Hall has nurtured many student leaders who have transitioned into being some of the most prominent and influential leaders, scholars and professionals throughout the region.

Named after the Jamaican-born poet and Caribbean scholar, Sir Philip Sherlock, Sherlock Hall is the first hall of residence at the Cave Hill Campus (established in 1971). Sherlock houses approximately 100 students each of whom must now take the challenge of passing the mantle of Sir Philip Sherlock, as they develop their intellects and improve relationships with our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean. Not alone but together as a family.

Named after retired principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Sir Keith Hunte, this hall of residence was officially opened in November 2013. Keith Hunte Hall is located on University Drive and Highway 1 and is within 5 minutes walk from the main campus. This hall currently has one block and can accommodate up to 64 students.

Commuters’ Representative (2021 — 2022)

When it comes to off campus accommodation at the Cave Hill campus, there are a wide variety of options for students to choose from. Most of these places range on average from 30 minutes to as low as 5 minutes away from campus. Students usually find living off campus to be a more convenient option for them as they are given their own space and full independence, whilst being a short distance away from campus. Students are given the option of living on their own or sharing with others, however they should also note that they are still responsible for their own rental fee as these are not divisible per each student. Hence, it is vital that students do adequate and efficient research on the accommodations available and the amenities that they include. There are many avenues for students to access this information which will be listed within this guide. Living off-campus, some students may assume that they may miss out the full campus life experience. However, the community off campus is one that can be described as family -like as students eventually form bonds with each other. Additionally, with the presence of the Commuters Committee, various activities and initiatives are put in place to ensure that students enjoy their life as a Blackbird Commuter.

COMMUTING SHUTTLE ROUTES The University of The West Indies Cave Hill Campus oﬀers a free shuttle service that is funded by the Student Amenities Programme. It can seat twenty-four (24) or twenty-eight (28) persons and runs from the main campus to a convenient oﬀ-campus location.

• The shuttle operates Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to TBA. • All students are required to present their VALID Student ID to board the shuttle. However, NEW students are given a grace period until their Student ID is issued. • Student account MUST be up to date to board the shuttle.

THE CAVE HILL ASSOCIATION OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS (CHAPS) What is CHAPS? Let me tell you, CHAPS represents the Cave Hill Association of Postgraduate Students and is the representative body for all graduate students at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies. All graduate students are automatically members of CHAPS. There is no application process nor is there any payment for membership. A committee is selected annually to represent this body through elections. The committee includes a President, and for the year 2021-22 is none other than yours truly, Renetta Haynes-Layne; a Vice President, Tyrell Giles, who is also Vice President of the Guild of Students; a Treasurer, Briana Brathwaite; Secretary, Fontana Roach; Faculty of Science & Technology, Sanya Compton and a Social Sciences Rep, Marjorie Trotman. Currently, the posts for representatives for the Law, Medical Sciences, Culture and Performing Arts Rep, Humanities and Sports are still available.

In addition to providing a medium for post-graduate students voices to be heard in areas which affect them, we are also here to help you develop into well rounded individuals by enhancing your academic experience, through wellness, sporting, and other social activities. We are also here to aid wherever possible, in financial aid, whether it be for food, housing, or another area. Campus Life for a postgraduate student at first can be very overwhelming, as most persons are in a full-time job and studying either part or full-time at the same time. Referred to by Cave Hill students as “GT” for its Guyanese style and cuisine, this bar offers a wide variety of food options to choose from, with different menu options at day and at night! It is located at the roundabout down the hill from campus!

This popular food-truck which parks in a lot near Free Hill, down the hill from campus is famous for its quality grilled meals such as ribs, chicken, and even fish! Served with a side of fries, the portions are more than enough to satisfy any hunger.

This usual stop and shop for spontaneous campus beach days offers lots of light snacks and drinks to choose from if you aren’t gonna buy the famous hot-dog & pizza combo with a drink! It is located at the Esso gas station down the hill from campus opposite the Sir Keith Hunte Hall.

THE INTER-CLUB COMMITTEE Student activity plays an integral role within the university. On campus, you would find several clubs, associations and societies who contribute directly to this. Governed by the Inter-Club Committee (ICC), these organizations oﬀer their own unique touch to the campus life and provides several ways for students to learn, grow, socialize, and express themselves. The ICC caters to the special interests of students through diverse options for activity including artistic and cultural societies, service and religious clubs and island associations. At the beginning of each school year they are given the opportunity to share with the campus what they have to oﬀer at the ICC expo; an event dedicated specifically to them.

Without a doubt, the heartbeat of campus life is the vibrant plethora of clubs, associations, and societies at Cave Hill. Their contribution to keeping students engaged throughout the year cannot be overstated. Country Associations demonstrate cultural diversity, enrich and inform students’ cultural awareness, and provides a sense of community away from home. Each week of the academic year is devoted to the activities of a particular organization, which pours its energy into delivering a spectacular show for students.

Accounting Students Association (ASA)

The Accounting Students' Association (ASA) was established to serve as a pillar of technical and education development, to lend a supporting arm to the University's existing academic programs and enable student members to relish in an acute, directional experience. To achieve this, we embark on an array of initiatives which invite professionals primarily from the fields of Finance and Accountancy to address our Brand Ambassadors on areas of career and professional development. We aim to balance these initiatives with numerous charitable outreach programs, social networking opportunities and fun activities to not only allow for a more well-rounded Ambassador but also for our associate partners to interact with our members.

Living by the motto, “Live to Serve, Love to Serve”, Circle K International is a collegiate student led service organization under the Kiwanis umbrella. The Debating Society (UWIDS)

The UWI Cave Hill Debate Society or UWIDSCH is a club engendered to promote debating and public speaking at UWI Cave Hill. The club endeavors to provide students with holistic development, from educational success to refining the arts of public speaking, critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution through a myriad of cooperative engagements. Our society trains our members in various forms of oration and we explore a plethora of topics ranging from social aﬀlictions to politics and economics. Our members graduate and become leaders in their various fields, dominating and making significant impacts in our Caribbean societies.

UWI Student Today Alumni Tomorrow (UWI STAT)

UWI STAT provides students with opportunities to integrate with fellow Caribbean and international students. It provides varied experiences to enhance their education and develop their leadership skills through involvement in campus, community and alumni activities. The members of the Vice Chancellor’s UWI STAT Ambassadorial Corps, are his representatives on all five (5) campuses of The University of the West Indies. They report to the Director of Alumni Relations – Institutional Advancement Division, who acts as Regional Director and Coordinator, and are a unique Corps, supported by the Oﬀice of the Vice Chancellor. They enable the Vice Chancellor, through them, to always be in touch with the overall student perspective. They carry out important annual mandates that improve the reputation and visibility of the University and contribute to Caribbean unity and the public good. Each Corps is registered as a student club on each campus, as the Ambassadors are all students of a campus. They are unique however as they report to the Regional Director and become Alumni Ambassadors upon graduation, having pledged lifelong allegiance and engagement with the University. They also represent the Campus they attend and that respective Principal.

University Foreign Language Club

The University Foreign Language Club of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus is a club dedicated to providing valuable tools for students to improve their language skills. Our mission is to create a safe space where everyone has the opportunity to dive into a new culture and gain appreciation for the world outside of our own through language. Our membership is open, not only to language students looking to further their studies in a practical setting, but to anyone with an interest in learning a new language. Shepherd House International Campus Fellowship

We are a Christian fellowship and a part of the United Denominations originating out of the Lighthouse Group of churches. We aim to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the student body and provide students with a safe space to find the answers to many of their questions about the word of God and grow in their knowledge of Him.

Optimist Club of UWI Cave Hill

The Optimist Club is a service organization, dedicated to bringing out the best in youth, our communities and ourselves by providing hope and positive vision. We conduct various volunteer activities which, in addition to benefiting our community, can provide Give Back hours for the members of the club. This is our first year in operation and we are a virtual club with monthly online meetings; we only interact in person at any planned service projects or socials. The Cave Hill Campus oﬀers all its students (athletes and non-athletes alike) the opportunity to train and engage in a variety of sporting disciplines. With over 10 sporting programs available, students can come and train with some of the best coaches on the island regardless of their experiences. These various sports are delivered in a way that persons can train anywhere between one to three or even more sports at any given time within the academic year. Despite the hindrances of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the Cave Hill Campus wants to ensure that students are keeping physically active and so are aiming to provide a full training schedule for the upcoming semester. Some of the various sports oﬀered include, but is not limited to, basketball, football, swimming, tennis, and track & field.

For sporting and gaming student activities there are 5 Chancellor Houses; Lewis, Alleyne, Wooding, Princess Alice and Ramphal House, all of which were named after previous Chancellors of U.W.I. and each student and staﬀ at U.W.I belongs to a house.

The Games Committee is encouraging all students to get involved in at least one sport. Not only is it a way to keep fit but it also enhances your academic performance by developing traits such as self-discipline and perseverance.

BARBADOS GETTING TO KNOW YOUR HOST COUNTRY

The Island of Barbados located in the eastern Caribbean channel as of August 2021 has a population of 287,711 people. The island is approximately 166 square miles with 11 parishes and the capital is Bridgetown located in St. Michael. Influenced by various philosophies such as; the Amerindians, Carib Indians, and Portuguese who gave Barbados its name Los Barbados (bearded-ones) deriving from the island’s bearded fig trees and the English Colonization. The locals however, love to refer to their homeland as “Bim”. After being granted full Independence in 1966 from the British, the first leader of Barbados was the Right Honorable Errol Walton Barrow of the Democratic Labour Party. Currently, The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley of the Barbados Labour Party is Barbados’ Prime Minister. Barbados have been home of some of the most renounced persons such as The Cricketer Garfield Sobers and famous international artist Rihanna. Currency: The Barbadian dollar (BDS) Area Code: +1(246) Wildlife: All across Barbados you will find these mischievous little creatures known as Green Monkeys. The green monkeys found in Barbados originally came from Senegal and the Gambia in West Africa approximately 350 years ago. About 75 generations have occurred since these monkeys arrived in Barbados and, as a result of environmental differences and evolution, the Barbados monkeys today have different characteristics than those in West Africa.

The monkeys are found mainly in the parishes of St. John, St. Joseph, St. Andrew and St. Thomas, where much natural vegetation and woodlands still exist. However, monkeys can also be seen traveling through hotel grounds in St. Peter and St. James.

As an incoming fresher there are several taxis you will frequently notice on and around campus. These are the most trusted by students and generally the operators can be contacted via WhatsApp. Notwithstanding, you are urged to be cautious when using unfamiliar taxis because some operators will attempt to take advantage of foreign students by charging erroneous prices. Also, please note that if you are unable to source one taxi operator, there is no need to worry. ZR’s/Buses/Vans

OUT You should prepare yourself for the sensation that is “catching a ZR”. This is the OF typical public transportation bus or ‘van’ as it is commonly called. A ZR is a small CITY ‘14-seater’ vehicle but be prepared for the conductors to pack as many people as STOP possible into it. The “van stand” is located near the Post Oﬀice on the Cheapside road in Bridgetown. The #3 route is quite popular, mainly because it passes the UWI Campus and goes through Wanstead Drive where most oﬀ-campus students live. The transportation fee is $3.50 no matter the distance. Whether you decide to travel by taxi, ZR or bus, the most important thing to remember is to always be aware of your surroundings and, as much as possible, try to travel in groups.
