In this guide, you would find the necessary information required to have a hassle free University life. It includes a plethora of activities available at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus such as the various clubs, sporting teams, outreach groups and country associations you can engage in. These would be a great way to relieve any academic stress and fully engage in campus life.

courses and degrees with other faculties/departments. It is the first UWI Faculty to be launched in 47 years. Here at the Cave Hill Campus, there is also a suite of academic, sports and co-curricular courses which you could pursue allowing you to be a well-rounded individual.

A newly opened state-of-the-art students’ gym is also awaiting your use.

I expect that the time you spend here will be productive and rewarding as you seek to advance your knowledge and skills in your chosen area of study. Our Campus is very receptive to the needs of our student body and my Administration is always willing to make the institution comfortable for our students. Over the past few months, a number of new buildings/ areas have been officially opened.

These include: the relocation of the Confucius Institute which is home to the offices which deal specifically with Chinese language and culture, and The Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, which is located on University Drive. Please get to know the entire Campus.

One of the jewels in the Cave Hill crown is its diversity, which is pivotal to the nurturing of the intellect of Caribbean region. TIPS FOR NEW UWI STUDENTS Shafel Mc Dowal

1) FIND SOMEONE WITH YOUR MAJOR AHEAD OF YOU One of the first things you should do before you even register for your courses is find someone with your major, one or two years ahead of you. This is extremely important as they will be able to enlighten you about what to expect with your courses and lecturers. They are also valuable as they can pass on used textbooks for free or discounted prices. These students are also useful when it comes to tutoring, as they would have recently learnt the material, and the information is still fresh in their minds.

2) BUDGET YOUR PARTY MONEY Yes, we know university is all about getting your degree and contributing to society, but there is also room for parties. Don’t be a sucker and spend all your

money on every single party in September as soon as the semester begins. Ask some 2nd and 3rd year students what parties to look out for and budget your money accordingly, this way you won’t miss out.

3) FREE CLINIC Many students don’t take advantage of the free clinic. Stop suffering in silence when you’re sick and go see the doctor at the clinic, IT’S FREE. You can also do a full STD screening, just go to the nurse and ask for a time slot. Please take your health seriously.

4) BEFRIEND YOUR LECTURERS No one is saying be a teacher’s pet, but don’t be a stranger either. There are so many opportunities that students get just because of their lecturers, such as letters of recommendation and internships. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or go to their office hours, your lecturers are here to help you help yourself.

5) IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR LECTURER I can’t stress this one enough. Lecturers don’t care if you don’t like them, whether it’s their accent, clothes or voice. You are here to learn, and the best strategy for dealing with a bad lecturer is to pass the course and get out as soon as possible.

Skipping class to avoid them will only result in a bad grade causing you to repeat, and then you’ll have to sit with them for ANOTHER semester.

6) DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP This can be the downfall of many students, I’ve seen it time and time again. Students silently struggle and never reach out for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take the time to speak to your lecturer and ask for help. If it’s an emotional problem there are peer counsellors and psychologists on campus to

help you. Everyone stumbles at some point and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

7)YOUR FIRST YEAR MATTERS Don’t listen to students who tell you your first year is irrelevant.

It might not count to your graduating GPA but your grades will still be visible on your transcript. Moreover, the information taught in your first year is the foundation for your other courses. Don’t listen to anyone that tells you to slack off, you’ll end up sabotaging yourself.

8) DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER STUDENTS You will meet all sorts of people at this University, however, the last thing you want to do is compare yourself. You will meet students with high GPAs who are articulate and always partying, and it’s easy to envy them and compare yourself.

Luckily, the only way to improve your life is to focus on yourself and you can’t do that if you’re always comparing.

9) STICK WITH YOUR OLD PRACTICES If you’re accustomed to going to church every week or going to the gym, don’t stop just because you’re a new student. It’s important to your well-being to continue these practices that enrich your life. If your spirit is low, then everything else will suffer.

10) REINVENT YOURSELF You are at a new school, with new people, and new surroundings. You are no longer plagued with the prejudices from back home. You have a chance to become the person you’ve always wanted to be, don’t be afraid to change. You have the golden opportunity to reinvent yourself, don’t waste it.

THE GUILD OF STUDENTS The Cave Hill Guild of Students comprises of every matricualted student (both undergraduate and postgraduate) at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. These students shall make up the Guild once they are registered for a course of study.

Students who form part of the Guild of Students are privileged to certain benefits. These students shall have the right to: 1. Frequent the Union and enjoy all its facilities and amenities 2. Vote at all Guild Elections and to stand for election of any elected office of the Guild Council (unless barred by lack of any special qualification) 3. Frequent the games fields and enjoy all the facilities and amenities offered.

4. Participate in all activities sponsored by the Guild of Students.

The Council of the Guild of Students The members of the Guild of Students are responsible for the election, and indirectly, the appointment of a Council of the Guild of Students. This Council is entrusted with the administrative functions of the Guild of Students and therefore deems it the Student Government.

The Guild Council is made up of twenty-three (23) members who’s main objective is to promote, foster and develop the educational, social, cultural and economic interests of the students and represent such interests in the University community and on the national and international level.

SHERLOCK HALL

Named after the Jamaican-born poet and Caribbean scholar, Sir Philip Sherlock, Sherlock Hall is the first hall of residence at the Cave Hill Campus (established in 1971).

Sherlock houses approximately 100 students each of whom must now take the challenge of passing the mantle of Sir Philip Sherlock, as they develop their intellects and improve relationships with our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean.

Not alone but together as a family.

“Beaming with Worrellific pride, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Cave Hill Campus and a special welcome to the new residents of the most illustrious hall, the Frank Worrell Hall of Residence. Here at the castle on the hill, your new home away from home, an abundance of opportunities to meet persons from across the region and even the world at large with our admission of foreign exchange students awaits you. FRANK WORRELL HALL

Named after West Indian cricketing icon, Sir Frank Worrell, this hall sits on a hill overlooking the 3W’s Oval and is in honor of Sir Frank Worrell and his fellow Barbadian cricketing knights: Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes. The second of the three halls of residence, Frank Worrell Hall is laid out in several blocks of three-story, penthouse-styled accommodation, with a capacity of approximately 200 students.

“Welcome Hunters! As a resident of the Keith Hunte Hall, you are now known as a Hunter, and your fellow Keith Hunte family embraces you with open arms. Travel through ancient history and immerse yourself in the four empires we have built. On our Keith Hunte Hall, whether you belong to the Persians on the first floor, the Mongolians on the top floor, or the Zulus and Romans on the middle floors, you will find a castle fit for all developing Kings and Queens. Here, help write our Hunter history as we write yours; embrace our unique culture as we embrace you. You will find that Hunters make up in courage, pride, and strength what we lack in numbers. You will find that the Hunter emphasis on family, service, and outreach provides deeper life meaning. You will find that our healthy environment allows the complete University experience.

I understand how hard it can be for you. As students in a foreign land, even though most of you are from the Caribbean, you will experience uncertainty. My advice is to embrace and welcome it and not let fear of the unknown paralyse you. You are away from home. Enjoy your freedom and your countless opportunities to develop, grow, and become the person you are supposed to be. Here is a unique chance to be the best you can be.

The Office of Student Services (OSS) is a branch of the University administration that is geared towards the promotion of holistic development in students with the aim of grooming students into wellrounded professionals.

Like the name suggests, the Office of Student Services offers a range of services and programmes to foster holistic development and progression from Orientation to Graduation and beyond. These services and programmes include First Year Experience, Career Development Counselling, Health Services, and Transportation Services. Furthermore, special services are provided for students with disabilities to make their stay at the University more accommodating.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES The Student Shuttle Service consists of a fleet of five (5) shuttles which can seat (24) twenty four or (28) twenty eight persons. The Shuttle Service is a supplemental service funded by the Student Amenities Programme; there is no charge at the point of service. There are various pick-up and drop-off points to facility commuting for students who do not have on-campus accommodation. Please note that valid student identification cards are required to utilize the shuttle service.

DISABILITY SERVICES The UWI Cave Hill Student Disability Policy promotes “an inclusive campus that enables the productive participation of all students regardless of disability” and calls for

the provision of accommodations for students with disabilities. Therefore, students with disabilities may receive reasonable accommodations to enable them to participate in all aspects of campus life.

“A reasonable accommodation is a modification to the delivery of instruction and method of assessment for a course, program, facility or service that seeks to eliminate or minimizes disabilityrelated barriers. Caribbean. Despite coming together just a few weeks before the first match, the team gelled quite nicely as the tournament progressed going from strength to strength each match. The squad was a confident group of players with a goal of winning the competition. Unfortunately, we lost the finals via penalty shootout which was devastating; however, the players were proud representatives of the UWI Cave Hill Campus.

SPORTS AT CAVE HILL The UWI, Cave Hill Camps has a number of sporting programs coupled with a recentlyupgraded sporting facility, the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. Students can find a fun way of keeping fit and healthy while at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus.

CRICKET The UWI Cave Hill Cricket team competes in three different competitions; T20, 50 over and the 3-day competition.

However, in the 3-day competition Cave Hill fields two teams which compete in the Barbados Cricket Association Elite Division and First Division while a third team features in the BCL competition. Due to the number of teams and matches played, all interested Freshers are encouraged to join the cricket team.

ATHLETICS The Blackbirds track and field program is one of the most structured athletics program in the island in terms of its operation. Management and coaches equip athletes with the necessary tools to reach individual goals. UWI Blackbirds captain and national athlete Fallon Forde gives major credit to UWI saying “This program has elevated me from just average, to a national championship and four national teams including a finals appearance at the IAAF world relays.

I would encourage anyone interested in athletics to get involved.”

HOCKEY Our hockey team is one of the most socially active and fun team sports at the Cave Hill campus. We compete in the Barbados Hockey Federation League, the Barbados International Hockey Festival and the annual UWI Scrimfest Competition. CHESS The Cave Hill Chess club promotes chess as a mental sport on campus. The club’s main goal is to teach students the art and science that is chess at any level, whether as a hobby or competitively. NETBALL The UWI Blackbirds Signia Netball Club participates in the domestic league “Barbados Netball Association League” which usually runs from March until June/July. The competition comprises of Knockouts and League titles across 7 divisions. Blackbirds currently have 3 teams; two Division 1 teams (highest level) & a Division 5 team. We are currently the defending knockout and League Queens for Division 1.

THE FACULTY OF SPORT In July 2017, The University of the West Indies launched its first new faculty in over 40 years, the Faculty of Sport. According to Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, the Faculty will operate by three disciplinary pillars: teaching learning and research; professional outreach and engagement; public outreach and community development. The Faculty of Sport will be headed by a newly appointed Dean, Dr Akshai Mansingh and will become operational in the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Faculty of Sport will be made up of four Academies of Sport based on the Cave Hill, Mona, Open and St. Augustine campuses.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION The University Administration provides free transportation on certain designated routes throughout the island that are accessible to registered students.

The Student Shuttle Service consists of a fleet of five shuttles which can seat twenty four or twenty eight persons.

The shuttle operates Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Hourly routes to and from the campus provide service to the city and the surrounding communities, where many off-campus students reside. All students are required to present their valid Student ID to board the shuttle.

The on-campus designated shuttle pick up/drop off points are the Roy Marshall Teaching Complex and the Faculty of Law and the Bridgetown designated shuttle pick up/drop off point is Probyn Street close to Bethel Methodist Church. The Warrens shuttle operates from 4:00 pm each day. The NCF Shuttle goes to break is from 11:15 am to 1:15 pm daily.

The shuttle does not operate during school holidays, weekends, or public holidays except when examinations are scheduled on public holidays.

Another option is the ZR (pronounced Zed-R) vans which are painted white with a maroon stripe. These vans are much smaller than the minibuses and buses and typically run shorter routes concentrated in highly trafficked and highly populated areas. Travelling

by ZR van is quite an experience as they are known for their high speed, loud music, sudden stops and packing in as many passengers as possible.

TAXI

Public transportation, provided by the Barbados Transport Board, is state owned and tries to effectively and efficiently operate each day.

A ride is $2.00BDS. The buses can be easily identified because they are blue and yellow, the colours of the island’s flag. There are two bus stations in Bridgetown.

Minibuses are painted yellow with a blue stripe. These are about the same size as the smaller Transport Board buses.

There are many taxis on the island to choose from when you wish to get around Barbados. The taxi fare depends on where you are being picked up and dropped off but is usually not very expensive. Taxis offer a flexible service that allows them to not only be available throughout the course of any given day but also be available throughout the wee hours of the morning.

Freshers’ Week gives the Guild of Students its first opportunity to engage the new budding minds into campus life here at Cave Hill.

With this in mind, the Guild of Students through the National Affairs Committee propose that these events be considered as the official Guild events for Freshers’ Week 2017.

SUNDAY – RELIGIOUS CONCERT The religious concert will be the first event of Freshers’ Week 2017. At the concert, all recognized religious groups will be invited to not only attend but to be a part of this event.

It is the Guild’s intention to give these groups the exposure since they are pivotal to what the Guild of Students’ is about. Additionally, the student body as a whole benefits since they too will be exposed to spiritual teachings from the various religious groups.

CAMPUS TERMS: 3Ws Oval – The 3Ws Oval is named in memory of three great Barbadian and West Indian cricketers - Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes. This oval is frequented by some of the Caribbean’s best cricket stars so keep your eyes open!

All-nighter - A study or work session that goes through the night; studying without sleep (usually a last-minute course of action).

Foundation Course - a preparatory course for university-level art and design education.

Fresher – a student in their first year at a university or college.

Freshers’ Week – your first week at university or college, and is packed with events and entertainment to help you settle in. Check on the Cave Hill Guild of Students plans for Fresher’s week on page 40.

Hunter - a current or past resident and avid supporter of the Keith Hunte Hall MSSR – a number of classrooms located at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in the Leslie Brown building that are commonly used by students as study spots during exam season.

Pelican Pride – a way to show that one is indeed a proud member/ alumni of the University of the West Indies.

RA – an abbreviation for Resident Assistant, those of you living on halls

should get very familiar with your RAs as they are the ones you can go to for help, especially when its laundry day!

SFK – the trinity of the Halls of Residence that grace the Cave Hill Campus. Philip Sherlock, Frank Worrell and Keith Hunte aren’t just the names of some of the Caribbean’s finest but are also the names of the Halls of Residence, which house many regional and international students.

Sherlockite - a current or past resident and avid supporter of the Sir Philip Sherlock Hall Struggle Food - A cheap or easy to prepare meal/snack usually eaten by UWI students. Examples include ramen, mac and cheese, and microwaveable meals.

TA - Short for teaching assistant, graduate students who teach courses at the university.

Worrellite - a current or past resident and avid supporter of the Frank Worrell Hall.

BARBADIAN TERMS Bajan (Baje) - A Barbadian - a native of the island nation of Barbados.

Bashment Soca – the name associated with the music that hails from this island featuring artistes such as Stiffy and Stabby who seem to be the most popular.

Big Man – a term used to refer to another person in a friendly manner.

Bim - The island nation of Barbados

Dat fa’ lick yuh – a popular bajan proverb meaning that someone deserves what they get.

Fishcake – a popular delicacy, which are fried balls filled with mention salt fish (salted cod) and bajan seasoning.

Scotch - To make room for someone Wha gine on - a popular expression used to ask someone ‘what’s up?’ or more literally ‘what’s going on?’.

Wuk up - To dance Wunna - typically used when referring to a person or a group of people to mean ‘you’ or ‘you all’.

ZR (Zed-R) - a type of private taxibus system found in Barbados. This form of transportation only cost $2 BDS!

WIDER CARIBBEAN TERMS Garcon – popular Lucian term influenced by the French language, meaning friend or acquaintance.

Lime – to have a party or a get together of friends.

Mudda Sick - a Bahamian exclamation used to express one’s surprise or excitement.

Wah gwaan - a popular Jamaican phrase meaning to ask someone ‘what’s up?’.

Oil down - the national dish of Grenada, a flavourful blend of salt fish, dumpling, provisions and vegetables.

Caw blen – an exclamation used to express one’s surprise equivalent to ‘wow’.

Ceviche - a popular dish from the land of Belize consisting of fresh raw seafood cured with citrus juices and flavoured with spices.

Cheese-on-bread (Cheese-on) -an exclamation used to express one’s surprise.

Dotish - a terms used across the Caribbean in many islands to mean ‘stupid’ or ‘dumb’.

ABOUT US The University of the West Indies Youth Development Programme is primarily a project development and implementation agency. It aims to promote the concept of regional integration and facilitate ambitious youth development initiatives throughout all sectors within the region. The programme is to be used as a conduit to significantly contribute to the fulfilment of The University of the West Indies (UWI’s) mandate as an activist university. The UWI – YDP actively designs interventions to complement the development of the region’s young people. Many of these initiatives and programmes are developed in collaboration with the regional civil society, governments, international organisations and development agencies focused on improving the present-day realities of the region’s youth. These projects focus on the development of the youth and meet the themes of regional and international development agencies ensuring that development funds are channelled towards these development initiatives. The UWI – YDP represents persons between the ages of 15-35 in the 18 countries that are served by The UWI and is expected to: • Serve as an activist arm of the University of the West Indies • Represent local and regional youth organisations and youth issues on all platforms • Facilitate youth development within all sectors of society • Conceptualise, design and implement projects, programmes and initiatives which meet the objectives of The UWI – YDP • Support the regional integration agenda within the Caribbean region.

• Represent regional youth interests in the development of national, regional and international policies and agendas of both a political and developmental nature.

in the 17th century. Before then, Barbados was inhabited by Taino and Kalinago Native Americans.

Transformed by the plantation system and slavery, this country was the world’s number one sugar producer by 1650. Barbados is the oldest continuing parliamentary democracy outside England; achieving its universal voting rights in 1943 and opted for full independence from the UK in 1966.

The history of Barbados is unique, and Bajan (the familiar term for Barbadians) culture is rooted in the plantation slavery economy, a unique blend of West African and European. Bajans speak English with a distinct accent, spiced with words in West AfricanEnglish pidgin called Bajan.

3 Grand Kadooment Barbados’ Crop Over Festival is comprised of copious events over a three month period but what lies at the end of the Summer festival is no doubt the biggest cultural explosion that ever existed. Grand Kadooment is the crowning event of the festival and every year it draws thousands of visitors, and celebrities, for a day filled with feathers, fun, music and “wukkin’ up”. It is a carnival that celebrates Barbadian soca and calypso. Whether participating in the bands or lining the streets with rest of the spectators, Grand Kadooment is no doubt the world’s sweetest Summer festival.

Paddleboarding, Wakeboarding, Kiteboarding There are endless activities that you can take part in on the numerous beaches of Barbados; swimming, diving, snorkeling, water sports and so much more. However, you may have the need to do something more adventurous and there are several options to cater to such a need.

• PADDLEBOARDING - One of the activities that has been gaining steam in Barbados is Paddle boarding. Paddle Barbados is the leading facilitator of this activity with a Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) school at the Barbados Cruising Club in Bridgetown. Not only does Paddle Barbados rent all the equipment necessary but they also offer a range of services such as lessons and tours for a range of skill sets.

• WAKEBOARDING - Wakeboarding can be defined as a more extreme version of water-skiing and that is perfect for the adventure seeker. Imagine yourself skimming the clear waters of the Barbados’ beaches and performing jaw-dropping acrobatic stunts for your enjoyment and the amazement of those watching.

9 The Richard Haynes Boardwalk

The boardwalks of Barbados are viewed as the ultimate romantic spot for taking a stroll with a loved one. The Richard Haynes beachside boardwalk, which stretches 1.6 km between Camelot and Accra Beach in Hastings, Christ Church, is also an ideal area to enjoy the view of the ocean from the South Coast with friends or alone. Take a look into the several close-by restaurants and shops that line the length of the boardwalk and surrounding areas. This peaceful experience will enchant you into repeating it time and time again.

10 St. Lawrence Gap If you are looking for the ultimate in nightlife experiences in Barbados, no other place fits the bill like St. Lawrence Gap.
