65 artworks by 24 established and emerging artists. Dating from late 1980s to present day, their work demonstrates a myriad of techniques from watercolor and aquatint to pastel and mixed media. Their iconic imagery has influences ranging from pre-Hispanic symbols and post-revolutionary nationalistic Mexican motives to the Chicano movement of the 1960s and contemporary urban culture.

INTRODUCTION I am very proud to present the next edition of Papel Chicano. The works of art in this publication are among my favorites in my collection.

They represent a wide range of expression and techniques, and their commonality is that they were executed on paper — all kinds of paper.

One of the attributes that I most appreciate about paper is its ability to absorb — it can merge with any other medium, whether it is watercolor, pastel, ink, paint, or just about anything else. There is a bond formed that is both unique and unpredictable.

Watercolor will determine its own flow and spread in ways that you could not predict, but are amazed. Paper will impose its pattern and textures on pastels that the artist can either incorporate or try to cover over. Handmade paper has an outcome that is all its own and the end result is anybody’s guess. Paper can be printed upon with a million different effects even in the digital age. Those who are most surprised are often the artists themselves.

Since I began collecting, my mantra has been: “You can’t love or hate Chicano art … unless you see it.” Hopefully, you will absorb these wonderful artworks and be changed in the process.

In her Retold Story of La Llorona [The Weeping Woman], Sonya Fe illustrates the traditional Mexican legend of La Llorona: a ghostly woman who cries for her lost children by the river, often causing misfortune to those who hear her. In Fe’s mixed media works, La Llorona is at times dressed in the Adelita2 uniform and surrounded by skull-faced cherubs.

In others, she is depicted as a flirtatious young woman standing by an arresting Zapata, referencing Diego Rivera’s iconic 1931 fresco The Agrarian Leader Zapata, which inspired the ideals of Chicano nationalism. Many Chicana artists such as Fe and Margaret García focus on feminist discourse in the face of hypocrisy within the Chicano movement.

Carlos Donjuán’s “Night Shift” series idealizes young Latinos, presenting them proudly with halos over their heads, their faces covered by colorful abstract forms revealing only stylized mouths.

Reminiscent of the memorial murals that appear in the streets of El Barrio, these anonymous figures epitomize the desires of Chicanos to be seen and remembered. While Donjuán alludes to spirituality, other Chicano artists such as Leo Limón and Jesús Chuy Rangel, include overt representations of religious rituals, like Day of the Dead skeletons and skulls alongside depictions of La Virgen de Guadalupe, illustrating the Mestizaje that prevails in Chicano life. Vincent Valdez’s series "Stations" similarly combines religious representations and urban life rooted in Chicano ideals.

This selection of works on paper embodies the desire of a collector who not only recognized the eminence of Chicano art, but who also seeks to share the richness of Chicanismo, which despite its struggles, fights passionately to be seen as one of the cultures that makes America what it is today.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES The Cheech Marin Collection Cheech Marin is best known as one half of the hilariously irreverent duo of Cheech and Chong.

While primarily known as an actor, director, and performer, he has developed what is arguably the finest private collection of Chicano art in the world. Since he started collecting in the late 1980s, he has accumulated over 700 works of art; mostly paintings followed by prints, mixedmedia works, and sculpture.

Marin declares, “Chicano art is American art. My goal is to bring the term ‘Chicano’ to the forefront of the art world.” This objective led to his producing and touring of exhibitions featuring works from his collection, starting in 2001 with Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, which drew record attendance at the 15 venues during its six-year national tour.

In 2003, Melissa Richardson Banks was introduced to Marin by artist Richard S. Duardo.

Together, the three produced The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana: Fine Art Prints

by Modern Multiples, a limited-edition portfolio series based on Marin’s collection. Two years later, she began managing Cheech’s growing Chicano art collection and now handles booking, marketing, and traveling exhibits as well as producing art books.

Since 2005, more than 50 museums have hosted ten separate exhibits based on the Cheech Marin Collection. In addition to Chicano Visions, The Chicano Collection, and Papel Chicano Dos, exhibits include Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection {Size Doesn’t Matter}, Los Angelenos: Chicano Painters of L.A., Menudo: Chicano Art from the Cheech Marin Collection, Chicano Dream: The Cheech Marin Collection (1980-2000), Take 10: The Past Decade of Collecting by Cheech Marin, and Papel Chicano: Works on Paper from the Collection of Cheech Marin.

Carlos Almaraz Born October 5, 1941 in México City, México Died December 11, 1989 in Los Angeles, California While born in Mexico, Carlos Almaraz grew up in Chicago and Los Angeles. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and later earned a M.F.A. degree from Otis College of Art and Design in 1974. In 1973, Almaraz and three other artists co-founded Los Four, a local art collective whose collaborations brought Chicano street art to the attention of the L.A. mainstream art community. He also created murals, banners, and other artworks for César Chávez and the United Farm Workers. His large Boycott Gallo mural on the All Nations Neighborhood Center in East L.A. was a community landmark before its destruction during the late 1980s. Long after his passing, his pastels, paintings, and murals remain a major influence on younger Latino artists. His work continues to be widely exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the world.

Charles “Chaz” Bojórquez Born January 13, 1949 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Los Angeles, California Charles “Chaz” Bojórquez began his art career by spray-painting along riverbeds. He attended art school in Guadalajara, Mexico, and later, classes at Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts) before graduating from high school in 1967. He studied calligraphy from Master Yun Chung Chiang and he began combining spiritual Asian writing with traditional cholo gang graffiti using art school techniques.

In 1979, he embarked on a three-year journey, visiting 35 countries to study how graphics and letters describe culture and national pride. One of L.A.’s first graffiti writers, Bojórquez says his work today takes him on searches for deeper meaning. He quit what he calls “tagging” in 1986 and is among the few artists who have

Pablo Andrés Cristi Born August 25, 1976 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Berkeley and Los Angeles, California After escaping the Pinochet military regime in Chile, Pablo Andrés Cristi’s parents fled to L.A. where he was born and raised. Motivated by political activism, his work is steeped in a critical inquiry of power, representation, and history. His investigations of the colonial past, present, and future often take the form of paintings and sculptural objects that deconstruct and comingle urban visual vernaculars. Informed by L.A.’s mural culture, Cristi’s complex paintings often intermix cultural signs and representations with painterly abstraction, connecting the politics of the canvas to the politics of the street. He has a B.A. from the University of Oregon, and an M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts where he was a recipient of the Barclay Simpson Award. Carlos Donjuán Born April 17, 1982 in San Luis Potosi, México Resides in Dallas, Texas Carlos Donjuán’s work draws upon the diverse idea of people who wear many masks while living in America in order to create and understand their identity. His work explores and studies the people who are part of this notion that is required for survival and self-understanding. Many of his paintings incorporate traditional portraiture

technique with the transformative elements of graffiti, mixing the past and the present modes to make something new. His intent is to present the journey of what it has been like to create and understand his own identity in America as a way to better understand his past, present and future. Donjuán received his B.F.A. from The University of Texas at San Antonio and his M.F.A. from The University of Texas at Arlington. Gaspar Enríquez Born July 18, 1942 in El Paso, Texas Resides in San Elizario, Texas Texas-born Gaspar Enríquez studied at East Los Angeles College and received his B.A. degree from The University of Texas at El Paso and his M.F.A. degree from New Mexico State University. He taught art at Bowie High School on the El Paso/Juárez border for 33 years until his retirement from teaching in 2003. His former students often provide inspiration for his work.

Enríquez has been included in numerous exhibitions, including CARA–Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation 1965-1985, which toured the United States. He provides a significant voice for people of the communities along the United States-Mexico border. In describing one of his works,Enríquez said, “One is born a MexicanAmerican, but one chooses to be a Chicano.”

Sonya Fe grew up drawing on the cement floors of her East L.A. home encouraged by her seven siblings, Jewish-American mother, and Mexican-American father. In 1976, she earned her B.F.A. from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Recognized for their beautiful execution, her paintings focus on the plight of women and children. Fe has published children’s stories and a drawing book, and is the co-founder of Publishing Children’s Stories, a program for elementary schools that integrates literacy, art and technology. Margaret García says “her work provides a look at my community through the presence of the individual,” and her desire is for her work “to be pertinent and meaningful.” Although she does not consider her portraits overtly political, over time, she has come to realize that their very specificity belies the stereotypes given to any one culture by the media. In addition to her portrayals of sensual women of mixed race, she recently completed a series of street scenes and landscapes, depicting the Highland Park neighborhood where she lives. A teacher and a mentor to many young artists, García studied at California State University, Northridge; Los Angeles City College; and the University of Southern California where she earned her M.F.A. degree in 1992. Her work has been exhibited in group shows throughout the U.S. and in Europe, and has been published widely. García teaches and lectures extensively on art in different cultures.

Emmanuel Galvez Born July 10, 1991 in México City, México Resides in Los Angeles, California While born in México City, Emmanuel Galvez grew up in a colonial town called Puebla before moving to the U.S. to finish middle school and pursue higher education. Today, he is an artist; an instructor at Heart of Los Angeles, an after-school program; and now an apprentice with Josephine Press. Galvez presents paintings as delectable social confections. His small, radiant still-life paintings lay out an array of pastries or pan dulce — traditional Mexican bakery goods such as conchas and chilindrinas; some partlally eaten and others cut into pieces. The familiar pastries are set low in atmospheric fields of monochromatic paint. Tiny yet textural, dabs of creamy pigment double as scattered sugar sprinkles or crumbs, while thin blushes of color create luminous shadows. He is represented by Craig Krull Gallery where he's had two solo shows to date.

Roberto Gil De Montes Born July 14, 1950 in Guadalajara, México Resides in Los Angeles and Nayarit, México Roberto Gil de Montes is a painter and a photographer who moved to Los Angeles at age fifteen.

He studied art at Otis Art Institute where he earned his B.F.A. in 1972 and his M.F.A. in 1976.

His work has been in numerous solo and group shows, including Hispanic Art in the U.S.: Thirty Contemporary Painters and Sculptors and Le Demon des Anges, which toured Europe in 1989. Among his public art commissions is an outdoor collaboration with Peter Shire and Elsa Flores Almaraz at Metro Headquarters Building Gateway Plaza. His artwork has been described as existing “in a hazy terrain somewhere between Mexico and Los Angeles.” Currently, he

CiCi Segura González Born April 8, 1950 in San Gabriel, California Resides in Los Angeles, California Primarily an abstract artist, CiCi Segura González also paints figurative work using oil, acrylic, and watercolor, and utilizes printmaking techniques to create woodcuts, etchings, and monoprints. She studied art at East Los Angeles College, working with artist mentors such as Roberto Chavez, Dale Maix, and Uli Boege. Like many Chicano/a artists, she printed at L.A.’s Self-Help Graphics under the guidance of Sister Karen Boccalero, and has taught at-risk youth.

She has worked for many companies such as the Walt Disney Company as an in-house graphic designer, storyboard artist, fashion illustrator, and art director. For the annual Trópico de Nopal Calavera Fashion Show in Los Angeles, Segura González has created costumes over the years in homage to art icons such as Rufino Tamayo and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Widely collected internationally, her artwork is also included in major U.S. publications and private collections.

Raúl Guerrero Born October 9, 1945 in Brawley, California Resides in San Diego, California Raúl Guerrero creates paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, artist’s books, photographs, and videotapes. He has forged an expansive, ever-evolving body of work that combines technical innovation; critiques of symbolic power; historical and literary references; and his personal perspective as an American of Mexican ancestry. As a child, weekly family visits to Tijuana introduced him to a variety of Mexican

folk arts and crafts as well as popular tourist items. At the same time, an incredible array of pop and sub-cultures were evolving in Southern California. The changing zeitgeist would influence Guerrero’s artistic work for years to come.

A graduate of Chouinard Art Institute, Guerrero has exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group shows at venues such as the Long Beach Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the CUE Art Foundation, New York. He received an NEA Photography Fellowship in 1979, and was the first recipient of the San Diego Art Prize in 2006.

He currently teaches in the Visual Art Department at the University of California, San Diego.

Roberto Gutiérrez Born October 15, 1943 in Los Angeles, California Resides in South Pasadena, California Known as the chronicler of East L.A.—past and present, Roberto Gutiérrez uses striking imagery, mostly in black-and-white, but also in vivid colors. The youngest of nine children to a father who worked in the railroad yards and as a dishwasher, his family’s lack of resources stimulated his interest in simple and accessible things. He studied at Roosevelt High School and then went to the Philippines and Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Marines. Because of the G.I. Bill, he was able to attend East Los Angeles Community College. Gutiérrez’s work has been widely shown in galleries throughout the Southwest and extensively distributed through the medium of posters depicting el barrio and Los Angeles. His deepest source of satisfaction comes from the knowledge of who he is and what he has to offer the community— a vision of life with all its glorious hues.

The son of migrant workers, Adán Hernández has been actively painting for more than three decades. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S., México, and Spain. Hernández’s art merges neo-expressionism with “Chicano noir”. His aesthetics evoke emotions of alienation, uncertainty, desperation, and loss, which dominate the Chicano experience. In describing his work, Hernandez says, ‘‘the high drama and highly charged content in my work reflects the day-to-day epic struggle of life in the barrio. Here, the challenge to overcome overwhelming adversity, which is celebrated in films, is a common occurrence.” For the 1993 cult-classic, Blood In…Blood Out, he was commissioned by film director Taylor Hackford (La Bamba) to create more than 30 paintings and drawings. In 2006, he published his first book, Los Vryosos: A Tale From the Varrio, which contains over 40 images of his art.

Leo Limón is well known for his cat faces painted on storm-drain covers that channel into the Los Angeles River. His work on paper primarily deals with the indigenous ideals of the heart (corazón).

He considers himself a cultural worker and an arts ambassador for East Los Angeles and the Chicano community. While still in high school, he was influenced by and involved with Los Four, especially Carlos Almaraz. During his time with Self-Help Graphics, a community-based visual arts center, Limón helped to develop the annual celebration of Día de Los Muertos and the Atelier Printmaking Program. In addition, he helped to establish the Aztlan Cultural Arts Foundation, Inc., to pursue his commitment to youth in his community. He has also worked with the MeChicano Art Center and the Centro de Arte Público.

Benito Huerta’s nuanced work is rich with references to history, art history, pop culture, literature, and film. Since 1997, he has been Director/ Curator of The Gallery at UTA, University of Texas at Arlington, where he is also a professor.

He has completed numerous public art projects and his work is in several museums and corporate collections throughout the United States.

César A. Martínez Born June 4, 1944 in Laredo, Texas Resides in San Antonio, Texas A major figure in the Chicano art movement since the 1970s, Cêsar Martínez is best known for his iconic portraits of Chicano characters as depicted in his popular “Bato” series. Also well known are his “Mestizo,” “South Texas,” and “Serape” series, which are executed in a wide range of media, including painting, prints, mixed-media, collage, found-material assemblages and constructions, and digital imagery that references cultural histories. His work has been included in landmark exhibitions such as Ancient Roots/New Visions, Dále Gas: Chicano Art of Texas, CARA–Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation 1965-1985, and Hispanic Art in the United States. The multimedia artist has shown at the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio; National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; and The Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C.

Gronk Born April 1, 1954 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Los Angeles, California Born Glugio Nicandro, the artist goes simply by the name Gronk, his middle name that he says is a Brazilian-Indian word meaning “to fly.”

He first came to the attention of the art world at age 16 when he joined Harry Gamboa, Jr., Willie Herrón, and Patssi Valdez in founding Asco (which means nausea in Spanish). This Los Angeles-based Chicano artist collaborative group was among the first to incorporate political activism into its aesthetic. After Asco disbanded, Gronk pursued painting and, more

recently, stage design. Today, while Gronk sympathizes with many Chicano political and social causes, he doesn’t use them as the basis of his art. Since the 1970s, his work has been represented in numerous private and museum collections across the country, and he has been the subject of many solo exhibitions.

Wenceslao Quiroz Born August 27, 1982 in Mexicali, B.C., México Resides in Baldwin Park, California Originally from Mexicali, Wenceslao Quiroz moved to Los Angeles with his family at age four.

As an East Los Angeles-based artist, Quiroz highlights mankind’s commonalities through his work, which celebrates the power of the individual and fosters the bond between culture and communities. Quiroz gained experience working on public art projects as an assistant to the muralist art collective East Los Streetscapers. He has been commissioned to paint several murals with at-risk youth in the communities of East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights and has led self-funded community beautification mural projects in Mexico and in the Middle East. Frank Romero Born July 11, 1941 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Beverly Hills and Mirmande, France A Los Angeles native, Frank Romero was one of the founders of Los Four, a 1970s Chicano art collective whose creative collaborations helped bring La Raza to the attention of the mainstream art community. Los Four’s historic 1974 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) was the country’s first show of Chicano art at a major cultural institution. Although he is well known as one of the city’s foremost muralists, today Romero is primarily a studio artist who lives and works in Los Angeles and France. Sonia Romero Born July 24, 1980 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Altadena, California Sonia Romero is a full-time artist who lives and works in Northeast Los Angeles. Her public works include mural commissions for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Metro (MacArthur Park Station), Community Redevelopment Agency, and Plaza de la Raza. She’s had several solo exhibitions, including at the Vincent Price Museum, Avenue 50 Studio, and Self Help Graphics. Romero received her formal education from the Rhode Island School of Design, with an emphasis in printmaking. She is the daughter of renowned artists, Nancy and Frank Romero, and the granddaughter of

Frank and Edith Wyle, founders of the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. Her print shop and studio are located in Lincoln Heights.

Ricardo Ruiz Born December 29, 1958 in Corpus Christi, Texas Resides in Corpus Christi, Texas Ricardo Ruiz’s paintings often include the themes of family, the cycles of life and death, and Mexican-American folklore. Whenever he needs a human presence in his work, he usually paints his family members from memory (as a child, his sister and brothers served as models, and as a father himself now, his three boys provide inspiration). For example, his “Masotas” series were inspired by childhood visits to his aunt’s home, spent watching his older cousin Esmeralda and her friends get ready to go out to parties. Images usually come to Ruiz in those moments between sleep and wakefulness – sometimes they make no sense to him, and it’s only later that he is able to decipher and depict them visually. Ruiz creates what Chicano art should be: well painted, familiar and mysterious, according to Cheech Marin. John M. Valadez Born July 15, 1951 in Los Angeles, California Resides in Los Angeles, California John M. Valadez has been making significant artwork for over 40 years in the Southern California region. His work has come to define an iconography of Chicano experience in the city, using both the changing dynamics and reconstructing a mythical allegory that speaks to a unique vision. This has been done through numerous federal and state mural commissions throughout California and Texas. Valadez had

Vincent Valdez Born September 7, 1977 in San Antonio, Texas Resides in San Antonio, Texas A native Texan, Vincent Valdez earned his B.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has focused his career on the practice of drawing and painting. Recognized for his intensive devotion to skill and detail, his monumental portrayal of the contemporary figure remarks on a universal struggle within various socio-political arenas and eras. Among many, his work has been exhibited at LACMA, Jack S. Exhibits Now On Tour Papel Chicano Dos: Works on Paper from the Collection of Cheech Marin Dating from late 1980s to present day, the 65 artworks in this exhibit range from watercolor and aquatint to pastel and mixed media. The iconic imagery by the 24 represented artists is influenced by pre-Hispanic symbols, post-revolutionary nationalistic Mexican motives, the Chicano movement of the 1960s, and contemporary urban culture.

Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection {Size Doesn’t Matter} This exhibit includes 65 paintings—averaging 16 inches square each—by 26 established and emerging artists whose works vary from photorealism to abstraction, from portraiture to landscapes; such styles and motifs are utilized to express each artists’ personality. Since 2011, sixteen U.S. museums have shown the exhibit.

Papel Chicano: Works on Paper from the Collection of Cheech Marin Bold and intense imagery rich in color has long been a trademark of art expressing the Chicano experience. This exhibit includes 40 works on paper—primarily pastels, but also drawings, mixed media, oil, acrylic and gouaches—from 19 established and emerging artists. Originating at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona, the exhibit has been on view in Utah, Texas, and California.

The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana: Fine Art Prints by Modern Multiples This exhibit features large-scale archival-quality pigment prints based on paintings by 26 artists in Cheech’s collection that depict urban life and the Chicano experience between 1969 and 2001.

It also includes linocut portraits of the artists by Artemio Rodriguez and a documentary film about Chicano art. Since 2005, it has been displayed at over ten venues across the country.
