ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in 1981, Armel Gaulme graduated from Penninghen art school in Paris. His sketchbook work is heavily influenced by by Alan Lee, John Howe and European illustrators of the 1900’s. After his studies, he illustrated various children’s books before moving into audiovisual production, video games, animation and advertising.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sylvain Despretz is an independent writer-director who has worked extensively in the USA and Europe in storyboarding and illustration. His mentor in the early part of his career was none other than the late Jean “Mœbius” Giraud, the world-renowned artist.

Later, he created storyboards for director David Fincher for Madonna’s Like a Prayer music video, and worked alongside Michael Jackson on video concepts for the Dangerous album. At the end of the 1990s Despretz began working for Ridley Scott on numerous feature film projects and TV spots. For the last two decades his name has been associated with several successful, high-profile films, notably The Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, The Fountain and Alien Resurrection.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR James Martin earned his B.F.A. in illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Upon graduation, he worked for the comic legend Neal Adams as a storyboard and movie poster sketch artist. A freelance career in L.A.'s film industry followed. Some of his clients included Steven Spielberg, the Grammy Awards, Mattel, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Lightstorm Entertainment, Marvel Comics and director James Cameron. For over twenty years he has worked as a background painter, visual development artist, texture and matte painter for Walt Disney Feature Animation and DreamWorks Animation.

Throughout his career, James Martin has maintained his commitment to teaching while working on his own art. Additionally, he has conducted painting and drawing workshops for the artists at DreamWorks Animation. He currently works in the illustration department at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Andrew Mar is an illustrator and concept artist who discovered the medium of Chinese ink when he was very young. He explains: “Ink is a straight-forward, binary mediumblack ink and white paper. With only two hard tones at your disposal, it can be difficult to create subtle transitions and softness. Mistakes become stark and attempts to fix them usually make it worse. The challenge is part of the appeal. My love for ink has me constantly striving to master the medium." And master it he has! Little wonder that this book achieved its funding goal in just 10 minutes when it was launched on Kickstarter in August 2019.

A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR “I've filled up tons of sketchbooks lying in bed in the evenings. I draw for between thirty and ninety minutes before going to sleep almost every night. Nearly all the drawings in this book were done under the same conditions. They were always drawn in one go, without prior pencilling, be it with or without a specific plan.

These notebooks are also a sort of spiritual journey for me. It is like meditation. I get lost in the shapes, lines and small details, particularly as I am often in a lethargic state; on the verge of falling asleep. Practicing this form of automatic drawing has liberated me creatively. I was attached to realistic drawing for years and didn't let myself play about.

I got way too serious.

Once, I heard Moebius say that a drawing was never wrong, that you just had to do something else. Since that day I've been experimenting every day without constraint, waiting for something to happen. I've become a front row spectator of happy chance, convinced that anything is possible. Every night I dream about what I will draw the next day.”

Christmas 1986, thirteen-year-old Jesper, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, got the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game he had asked Santa for. There and then, he made it his ambition to become a fantasy artist and one day work for Dungeons & Dragons. After studying Danish literature and Art History he became a freelance illustrator and soon all he did was fantasy art. He got to work for some big clients on role playing and trading card games and then, eventually – fifteen more years later, he achieved his ambition by working on his first Dungeons & Dragons project!
