Year in Review 2017 has been a tough year. Probably one of the toughest we, as a family, have ever had to go through. A few days after my dad passed away in August, I found myself at the side of a cricket pitch, covering a T20 night game, sat well away from any of the other media people, on my own. It was a beautifully warm evening at Headingley, and switching off my emotions, I looked through the viewfinder to capture the best images I could given the circumstances. This wasn’t work. It was a form of therapy. A way that I could focus my attention on what I was doing and really put things into perspective. Watching the Diamonds and then Vikings put in superb performances against their Lancastrian opposition was rewarding. Tim Bresnan’s passionate performance was something to
behold, his celebrations at getting the final wicket captured it all for me. I am truly blessed that I do something for a living that I have a passion for and that at difficult times can act as a way of taking my mind off problems and tapping into the emotions of the occasion. This review excludes nearly all of my national agency work and concentrates on sport that is played around the area that I live. As with previous years, I strongly believe in supporting local sport, even if I don’t [as in many cases] get paid for covering grassroots games. The images are not ‘the best of’ 2017, but are those that mean something to me and that I have good memories of. I hope that you enjoy and if you were at any of the games, bring back good memories too.

The Harrogate & District Evening Cricket League bill themselves as ‘probably the oldest evening cricket league in the world’...and who am I to argue! What I can say with certainty, is that it has provided for some of the best cricket entertainment during the 2017 season, with a number of nailbiting finishes in the games played. There are five leagues, and three cup competitions that run throughout the summer - The Addison Cup, CB
Atkinson Trophy, and the George Greaves Cup. All of which, I have had the pleasure of covering for the past few years. The shot opposite was taken near the end of the season at Knaresborough Forest’s ground, a wonderful club nestled in by the river and overlooked by a pub. The photo is of one of the pub patrons watching the game from the balcony, silhouetted by the evening sun in one of the screens.
