Welcome back to Station View

to us. We needed a replay to beat Albion Sports in the last round however and a trip to Norton on a mid week night would not be ideal so its important that we do the job today. The next round would see Consett/Clitheroe in a home tie so its a mouthwatering opportunity as we take each round at a time.

A warm welcome again to Norton and their management team for todays FA Cup Preliminary Round tie.

We played Norton in pre-season after links have been created through Matthew Lovegreen as he played a handful of games for both teams last season. The pre-season game will mean nothing as we go into todays competitive game with both teams likely to field different teams that played in the friendly.

After today we will have played 4 cup games and only 1 league game but after the 4 games so far we are very pleased with the way we have been performing and the fitness levels of the players.

Harrogate Railway are heaped with history in the FA Cup and there always seems to be a huge amount of optimism that previous runs can be repeated and similarities between the past years compared to this.

That showed on Tuesday night as the game against Ollerton went to extra time and we still had the energy to power forward throughout extra time and get the winning goal.

I dont think its unrealistic to have those ambitions and with home draws so far the draw has been kind

The league cup is not high on our priority list but its nice to get through a round as it creates a

winning mentality and gets us on a high going into today. We had a few injuries and a few missing and thats why we had a couple of young lads on the bench and as football often happens one of them, Brandon Deane, came off the bench and scored the equaliser in stoppage time.

The Late Late Show It was ‘The Late Late Show’ for Harrogate Railway as they twice came from behind to book their place in the third ground.

Ollerton Town arrived at Station View at 7:45pm, having been delayed en-route by a major accident on the motorway, the cup-tie eventually kicking off at 8:20pm.

on a defensive error, picking up the ball outside the box, running in on goal to score past the advancing Jake Lofthouse.

Town went in at halftime one goal to the good and on the balance of play, probably deserving their narrow lead.

The first half saw both teams match each other, with an even amount of possession and few clear-cut chances.

Railway made a change at halftime with Dan Barrett replacing Daniel Stimpson who had been struggling with a foot injury.

Railway’s best chance of the half came from a Stephen Bromley corner.

Alex Low rose above the Ollerton defence to get a powerful header on target, but straight at Simon Smith in the Town goal who made a good save.

With the second half underway, Railway were in the ascendency. Harry Brown in particular starting to get into the game and putting in some great balls from set pieces. The pressure on the visitors was mounting.

However, it was Ollerton who created the best chance of the first half and took the lead.

highest and got a powerful header on target.

His goal-bound attempt was cleared off the line, and Railway were unlucky not to

equalise.

However, the pressure eventually told and Harrogate Railway drew level.

Simon Parkes received the ball from Stephen Bromley just inside the penalty box and with two defenders trying to close him down,

fired his shot past them both and the keeper into the roof of the net; 1-1 after 68 minutes.

With time running out, Railway made their second change of the evening as Chris Ovington was replaced by debutant Brandon Dean, the substitution being made while Ollerton Town were preparing to take a free kick, 25 yards out from Railway’s goal.

Ollerton Town’s Cameron Mitchell fired the free-kick goalwards and the ball took a wicked deflection off the Railway wall, looping up and over everyone, dropping just under the crossbar and eluding Lofthouse’s desperate attempts to tip the ball over.

Ollerton were back in the lead with time running out.

Railway pressed all out for an equaliser, relentlessly attacking again and again. However, it took until the second minute of added time for them to make the breakthrough.

Dan Barrett received a throughball and ran directly towards the goal. As Simon Smith rushed out to narrow the angle, Barrett shot past the keeper only to see his effort hit the post.

The shot rebounded into the centre of the box where Brandon Deane had run and he calmly slotted the ball home to take the

game to extra time.

The Ollerton Town players and fans shouted for an offside against Dan Barrett, but the referee and his assistant were in agreement that he had run from an onside position.

There was only time enough for the game to be restarted before the referee blew his whistle to signify the 90 minutes were up

and to take the tie into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes saw Railway’s fitness as one of the deciding factors, with them laying siege to the Ollerton Town goal.

It looked as if the game would be going to penalties, but for a moment of brilliance.

With less than two minutes remaining on the clock, Ryan Sharrocks ran down the wing, beating the Town defender and fired a dangerous cross into the box.

What an evening of football – Ollerton Town with a threehour journey, sat in traffic, played 120 minutes of football and had led twice in the game.

INTRODUCING NORTON & STOCKTON

The club was established in 1959 as Norton Cricket Club Trust by members of Norton Cricket Club seeking a winter pastime, and joined the Teesside League.

They won the Durham Minor Cup in 1967–68, and went on to win the North Riding Amateur Cup three times and the Teesside League Cup once.

In 1980 Stockton were wound up. As their remaining assets were transferred to Norton, the two clubs merged, taking their current name. They joined Division Two of the Northern League in 1982 when the division was re-established. They remained in Division Two until 2008–09, when they finished as runners-up and were promoted to Division One. In 2010, the club achieved its record attendance when a crowd of 1,526 watched them take on F.C. United of Manchester

in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. They are currently members of the Northern League Division One and play at the Norton Sports Complex.

Harrogate Railway last played Norton & Stockton in July 2016, winning the friendly 2-1.

Welcome to the Directors, Management, backroom staff, players and fans of Norton and Stockton Ancients. We heartily welcome you to Station View for the second time in a number of weeks. People may have noticed recently some notices around the clubhouse and dressing rooms that say we heartily welcome all to our club and will treat everyone with respect. And we will do just that!

From my now long experience in non-league football I have not always found this to be the case, and although Harrogate Railway have always been regarded as a club with good people and good traditions every season brings in new players and new faces and it is only fair they clearly understand the values of the club.

Going on to the team and players Harrogate Railway are working hard to build a team that is professional off as well as on the field, which means challenging decisions however in a professional and courteous way. Also we are building a team that is one of the fittest, if not the fittest, in the league which has fighting spirit, which

we have seen in abundance over the last three games.

Also a will to win that will undoubtedly bring positive results.

Two great cup wins in the FA cup and League Cup last Wednesday takes us to the next round of both competitions, which brings us to today.

Rob’s View Meet the chairman

Some people say it is not correct to name individual players and I do not disagree with that, however against Albion Sports we asked the players to nominate two team members for the Man of the Match award and The Hardest Working Team Member award, and they were Jake Lofthouse and Ryan Sharrocks respectively, so a very big WELL DONE to them.

As I have said over many years in non-league football “the team off the pitch is equally as important as the team on the pitch”. We have

seen recently an equally wonderful performance from the team off the pitch especially over the last couple of weeks following Teri’s traumatic experience on holiday.

We look forward to welcoming Teri back all in one piece and would like to thank every single person who has showed the same spirited performance off the pitch as we have seen on the pitch.

I hope you agree this bodes very well for the future.

Here’s some info on who they are...

The club was formed in 1979 as Athersley North Juniors. In 1983–84 they finished third in Division Two of the Barnsley Nelson League and were promoted to Division One. After finishing as runners-up in Division One the following season, they switched to Division Two of the Barnsley Junior League for the 1985– 86 season. Their first season in the new division saw them finish third, earning promotion to Division One. They were renamed Athersley Recreation in the summer of 1986.

After winning Division One in 1986–87, the club became members of Division One of the Barnsley Association League. They fin-

ished as runners-up in the following season, earning promotion to the Premier Division.

The club went on to win back-to-back Premier Division titles in 1991–92 and 1992–93, and then three successive titles between 1995 and 1997.

After their third title in 1996–97, the club moved up to Division Two of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League in 1997. They won the division in their first season in the league, earning promotion to Division One. The following season saw them finish as runners-up, resulting in promotion to the Premier Division.

They subsequently won the Premier Division at the first attempt.

After three seasons in which they finished eighth, second and fourth, the club

won the Premier Division again in 2003–04, starting a period of success that saw them win the title a further four times in the next eight seasons, finishing as runners-up on the other four occasions.

After winning their sixth Premier Division title in 2011–12, the club was promoted to Division One of the Northern Counties East League. Their first season in the new league saw them finish as runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2013–14 they entered the FA Vase for the first time, and a year later they made their FA Cup debut.

In May 2014 they won the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup for the first time, beating Frickley Athletic in the final at Hillsborough.
