went in level, that gave us chance to regroup and sort a few things out and we vastly improved in the second half and ran out comfortable winners.

A warm welcome to Ollerton and their management team for tonights league cup match.

Ollerton have already progressed through one round after beating Worsborough bridge 2-1 last week and good cup runs always help break up the season.

It sets us up with another home tie against Norton who we played in pre-season.

We will have opened our league fixtures against Mansfield and now tonights game before the FA Cup however and it is vitally important that we concentrate on each game and not only be hard to beat but get the winning mentality that we lacked last season.

I am sure they will want to come and win tonight and we need to guard against any kind of complacency against a team who play in a very strong Division one of the North East Counties.

I am writing these notes after our progression in the FA Cup after winning the replay against Albion Sports by 3-0.

Successful teams know how to win football matches whether you play well or poorly, and its important as a squad that we understand how to do this.

We were not quite at the races in the first half and thanks to the brilliance of Jake Lofthouse we

comments of how there is a better feel around the club and around the players.

Last year was obviously difficult but we have started again and the players know that last year is now a distance away.

Cup runs are important and something that can help us massively as you keep playing matches and improve on a game to game basis.

Some would argue that the League Cup is low on a list of priorities but Tadcaster the holders did the double last year and we must strive to emulate the successful teams so tonight we will be looking to win the game.

Railway lose the Bullfight Harrogate Railway’s return to the NCEL Premier Division ends in a 2-1 defeat at Station View having controlled the game for long passages of play.

However, there are plenty of positives.

Railway’s first chance came from some great play on 16 minutes. Jake Lofthouse rolled the ball into the path of George Mason who drove forward.

At half time, it had been a competitive opening 45 minutes with both sides having opportunities to score but with Railway probably unlucky not to be ahead.

George played the ball to Chris Ovington in midfield and he hit a 30 yard, crossfield ball to Ryan Sharrocks.

Ryan then ran to the byline and got a great cross in to Stephen Bromley whose header just evaded The Bulls’ post.

The Bulls came out for the second half seemingly better organized and with more purpose. Then came the first decisive moment of the game.

Ovington had the next chance, forcing a fingertip save from Jason White as he connected well with the ball and the keeper pushing the

attacker getting around him before going to ground under Hendrie’s tackle as he attempted to get back to his feet.

The assistant referee had flagged as soon as Jordan had gone down, signifying a foul on the defender. The referee blew

his whistle and then pointed to the spot for a penalty.

The referee waved away appeals for him

to speak to his assistant and booked Jordan Hendrie for what appeared to be dissent.

Gary Bradshaw stepped up to take the penalty, which he hit hard and low to Jake Lofthouse’s left, who managed to get a hand to the ball and push it onto the post and away to safety.

There was a sense from the home supporters that justice had been served.

Railway pressed forward, spurred on by the penalty save and were awarded a free kick soon after, after a clash between Danny Patterson and Chris Ovington in midfield.

Stephen Bromley placed the ball down, 25 yards out from the goal and then unleashed a thunderous shot into the top left-hand corner of Jason White’s goal.

The Bulls pushed forward from the restart and ten minutes later the referee was again pointing to the spot to award them another penalty after Alex Low had brought down Lynton Karkach.

This time there could be no complaints about the awarding of this penalty.

The supporters watched as Jason White ran up from his own goal, picked the ball up and placed

it on the spot. The Bulls’ keeper was about to take the penalty.

He took a short run up and hit it hard and to Lofthouse’s right, Jake nearly getting a glove on the ball. AFC Mansfield were level.

Railway responded, pushing forward to try and get the lead back and take all three points. Chris Ovington having the best of the chances, forcing White into a great save low to his left.

The decisive mo-

ment came following a Railway corner, with The Bulls breaking quickly downfield. Railway had a couple of chances to cut the ball out in midfield, but an unforced error saw the danger man Lynton Karkach get to the ball who then ran into the box past Alex Low. Karkach made no mistake, firing a shot past the advancing Lofthouse and sparking jubilant scenes on the sidelines as Mansfield took a 2-1 lead with a couple of minutes left on the clock.

Try as they could, Railway were unable to fashion another clear chance and the final whistle came, with The Bulls taking all three points and continuing their good start to the NCEL Premier League campaign.

Harrogate Railway can take plenty of positives from this performance and count themselves a little unlucky. Attention now switches to the League Cup on Tuesday night with the visit of Ollerton Town and the FA Cup at Station View on Saturday.

INTRODUCING OLLERTON TOWN Ollerton has a long history of local football going back to the late 1800s.

One of its best periods was immediately before the Second World War when Ollerton Colliery won the Notts Senior Cup in 1937/38 and it’s reserve team won the Notts Intermediate Cup the year previous.

Ollerton Colliery ceased as a football club in the early 1980s but was reformed in 1988 as Ollerton and Bevercotes Miners Welfare and began life in the Mansfield Bitter League before progressing to the Notts Football Alliance in 1991.

The club won the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Division Two championship in 1992–93, gaining promotion to Division One under the management of Adge Owen and David Kent.

Following the closure of the colliery in 1994, the club changed its name to Ollerton Town F.C. In the same year, Ollerton were champions of Division One in 1995–96 and were promoted to the top division of the Notts Alliance.

After finishing runners-up in 1999– 2000, the club was promoted to the Central Midlands League and entered the English Football Pyramid.

In the 2007–08 season, Ollerton, under the management of Don

Gethfield, David Kent and Anthony Thompson, the club won the Central Midlands Premier Division, earning promotion to the Supreme Division.

That season they also reached the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup final where they were beaten 2–0 by Eastwood Town.

In 2008–09, the club took part in the FA Vase for the very first time, getting to the second round proper in 2009–10.

After the resignation of Don Gethfield back in 2011, and a brief stint under Paul Rawden, the club appointed Dave Winter and Stephen Bodle as first team managers.

The pair guided the club to a 7th placed finish and the Central Midlands Floodlit Cup final in their first season.

For the 2011–12 season, the club was placed in the Central Midlands North Division following a league restructure.

Ollerton spent a few seasons in the middle echelons of the league before in the 2015–16 season, with former-captain Jamie Allan now also on board as first team coach, the club secured promotion to the Northern Counties East League after finishing runners-up in the Central Midlands North.

oday we start a look at one of the most prestigious cup competitions in its time, the FA Amateur Cup.

For us in the 1950s and 1960s it was as important as the FA Cup is today.

£30, and to obtain medals for the winners and runner-up, their total cost not to exceed 32/- (£1.50) and 20/- (£1) respectively.

From 1949 to the end in 1974 the final was played at Wembley and for a long time was televised live by the BBC, albeit in black and white.

Don’t laugh, that must have been a fair amount of money in those days.

The initial competition attracted 81 entries and the first matches were played on 21 October 1893.

Let’s go back to the beginning. With professional football being introduced in the late 19th century, particularly in the north and midlands, performances of amateur clubs in the FA Cup were on the decline.

To maintain the interest of amateur football it became obvious that an alternative competition solely for the amateurs was required.

In August 1892 the Sheffield club, a name well known to us and the oldest football club in the world, wrote to the FA offering to put up a cup to be competed for by amateur clubs.

Although this offer was declined, the FA later resolved “that it is desirable to institute a Cup open for competition to amateur clubs under the control and management of the association”.

Interesting to note that goal nets and the penalty kick had only been introduced three years earlier.

The first final was at Richmond on 7 April 1894 between Casuals and Old Carthusians and attracted a crowd of 3,500.

R Topham opened the scoring for Casuals after only four minutes but Buzzard equalised from a cross by Stanborough 30 minutes later. Stanborough then gave the old boys the lead just before the half-time oranges.

No further goals in the second half so Old Carthusians won 2-1 and became the first winners of the FA Amateur Cup and a splendid time was had by all.

On 9 February 1893 an FA Amateur Cup sub-committee was set up. Its founder members were N L Jackson, J Howcroft, G S Herrington, R E Lythgoe and W Pickford.

That inaugural competition included some very famous professional names still prominent today.

None of those names ring a bell with me, do they with you? They were instructed to purchase a suitable trophy, its cost not to exceed

Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town, Reading, Shrewsbury Town and Berwick Rangers all competed for the first cup.

Norton & Stockton FA Cup Opponents 3:00pm Saturday 20 August 2016 The club was established in 1959 as Norton Cricket Club Trust by members of Norton Cricket Club seeking a winter pastime, and joined the Teesside League. They won the Durham Minor Cup in 1967–68, and went on to win the North Riding Amateur Cup three times and the Teesside League Cup once.

In 1980 Stockton were wound up. As their remaining assets were transferred to Norton, the two clubs merged, taking their current name. They joined Division Two of the Northern League in 1982 when the division was re-established. They remained in Division Two until 2008–09, when they finished as runners-up and were promoted to Division One. In 2010, the club achieved its record attendance when a crowd of 1,526 watched them take on F.C. United of Manchester in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. They are currently members of the Northern League Division One and play at the Norton Sports Complex.
