not and thats why we ended up being unsuccessful in our aims and targets.

It will be a difficult game of that I am sure, but we have built a squad filled with experience and enthusiasm and the aim is to finish high up the league.

With this in mind, home games are games that we need to be taking maximum points and make the slope here at Station View somewhere that away teams remember as a difficult place to come.

Welcome to Station View Today we welcome the return of Rudy Funk and his team from AFC Mansfield.

Against Albion last week we drew 1-1, obviously I do not know the outcome of the replay but we should have put the tie to bed in the first game. I know they missed a penalty and had a very good appeal turned down late in the game, but when you compare chances we had three or four really good chances that we should have taken.

Rudy’s last visit to Station View was his last game in charge of Scarborough after a successful stint as their manager and he is now moving AFC Mansfield through the leagues and doing a fantastic job.

They won their FA Cup game 4-0 away from home and I write these notes before we play Albion in our replay and before AFC Mansfield have played their first league game against Liversedge but I think from talking in football circles AFC Mansfield will be one of the challengers for the title come April.

We didn’t but we were fortunate enough to have that bit of cup luck and still be in the draw.

I spoke to Rob Northfield after the game and said it was my most enjoyable game in a long time, this was due to the chances we created and the excitement of the game.

Today will be a great marker for where we are, we need to ensure we are competitive in all our matches this season, last season we were

I keep mentioning young Harry Brown around the club and the expectations I have of him this year.

Last year I felt for the Evostick he was just a bit too young and small framed did not help him when we were spending huge amounts of games defending, this year I believe he has a pivotal role, and the way he has performed so far has been very impressive.

He asked me a couple of weeks ago what I felt he needed to add to his game, and I said goals, what a strike for him against Albion and we might be lucky to see as good a goal this season.

Great start for the young man.

Railway Fail To Tame The Lions Honours finish even as Railway score first in the opening 45 minutes and Albion Sports quickly get back level.

A penalty to the visitors could have seen them take the lead, while Railway fail to convert a series of chances.

Railway’s first competitive match of the 2016/7 season saw Albion Sports visit Station View in the Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round in an evenly fought tie on a hot summer’s day.

Albion then had another free kick just outside the box, but Lee Elam’s shot sailed over the bar without troubling the home team’s defence.

As the initial storm was weathered, Harrogate Railway started to get some good possession and passed the ball around with growing confidence. Harry Brown was instrumental in midfield as his intelligent play set up a number of attacks.

It was Albion who started the brighter, pushing Railway back in the first 15 minutes and winning a series of free-kicks just outside Harrogate Railway’s penalty box.

Aran Basi’s shot from a free kick hit Railway’s wall and the rebound fell kindly to Daniel Facey, but the impressive Jake Lofthouse comfortably saved his shot.

In fact it was Harry who had Railway’s first clear chance from a great in-swinging corner, his shot was tipped around 7

the post by a flying Kyle Trennery in the Albion goal.

then had a halfchance to score from inside the box, his scissor kick went through 8

a number of players but just wide with Trennery rooted to the spot, only able to watch

the ball.

Harrogate Railway broke the deadlock on 24 minutes. Harry Brown shrugged off a couple of challenges, running across the Albion defence just outside the box and got himself in a position to play the ball forward. He took everyone, including Trennery by surprise when he unleashed a thunderbolt from 30 yards, leaving the Albion Sports’ keeper with no chance.

The goal was no more than Railway deserved for their dominant passage of play.

However, the lead didn’t last long as Albion Sports regrouped and put together their own good period of possession. Aran Basi fired in a shot and Jake Lofthouse was only able to parry. The ball found itself at the feet of Daniel Facey in the centre of the box, a few yards out from goal and he wasn’t about to miss. Albion Sports were back level.

The Lions went for the kill from the restart. Daniel Facey raced into the penalty box, faced

by Lofthouse who stood his ground, forcing Daniel to go around him. As the Albion Sports player rounded the keeper, Jake caught him and Facey went to ground.

The Albion players and bench claimed the foul and the referee pointed to the spot.

After a few seconds the referee pulled out a yellow card and showed it to

Lofthouse. Last season, Railway would have been down to ten men with a penalty to face. This season with the keeper making an attempt to get to the ball, rule changes mean that the referee can award a penalty and issue the offending player a yellow card and not a red.

Aran Basi took responsibility for taking the resulting penalty, hitting it hard and low to Lofthouse’s left. The keeper guessed correctly, diving across his 10

goal and getting a strong hand to the ball, pushing it wide.

The teams went in all-square, 1-1 at half time.

The second half saw Railway take the upper-hand, getting more possession, pressing forward to try and win the game.

Harrogate Railway’s back four are starting to get a great understand-

ing, playing well and looking solid. In the second half, they dealt comfortably with most of the Albion Sports’ attacks, only occasionally allowing a shot in on goal.

It was Railway’s attack that seemingly carried the greater

threat. With Ryan Sharrocks constantly running down Railway’s right, it was Jordan Hendrie’s deft pass that allowed Ryan to beat his marker and get a great cross into Bromley in the box. Stephen connected well with the ball, ensuring it was goal-bound only to see Trennery make a fantastic save, pushing the ball to safety.

The Railwaymen were not finished. Shortly after, George Mason found himself on the edge of the box with a

clear sight of the goal. He unleashed a fierce shot destined for the top corner, only to see Kyle Trennery stretch full length and deny Railway the winner.

Albion Sports pressed for a winner in the final minutes of the game, but Railway’s defence held strong and Lofthouse had no difficult saves to make.

INTRODUCING AFC MANSFIELD AFC Mansfield were formed in 2012 and have signed a 10 year deal to play at Forest Town.

The club joined the non-league pyramid in The Central Midlands Football League.

The club are a community club with the aim of giving something back to the community.

The club’s nickname is ‘The Bulls’ and the original management team were Micky Taylor, Doug Etches and Graeme Rodger.

AFC Mansfield competed on four fronts in the 2012-13 season and came so close to winning the lot in their first season.

Despite losing just two games all season and amassing 176 goals for and just 20 against ‘The Bulls’ had to settle for runners-up to Dronfield Town who put in an amazing league run dropping just 5 points all season.

Better news came in the Notts Intermediate Cup where ‘The Bulls’ took the trophy with a 2-0 win at Eastwood Town’s ground against Beeston AFC. This was AFC’s first ever silverware.

This success was quickly followed up by a superb win in The Floodlit

Cup Final at Sutton Town’s ground against a physical and competitive Newark Town. ‘The Bulls’ ran out 4-1 winners on the night and added another trophy to the cabinet.

‘The Bulls’ were hoping to make it a treble with the League Cup at Alfreton Town’s ground but with weary legs and still league games to play it was a game too far for the club.

After having two players sent off for second bookable offences AFC eventually conceded an injury time goal to Clifton All Whites who lifted the cup after being runners-up last season, let’s hope that’s an omen!

For the 2013-14 season the club entered the FA Vase and were eventually knocked out in the second Round by Step five side Huntingdon Town after a replay.

The club further expanded by starting an U19 side and also taking on U7 boys, U10 boys, U11 boys, U15 boys and girls sides and an U16 boys team for the 2013-14 season.

The 2013-14 season bought more success, the 1st team were crowned CML North Division Champions and completed the double with a win over Thorne Colliery in The League Challenge Cup. Continued Page 19

AFC MANSFIELD A CLUB WITH AMBITION Once again the treble eluded them when they went down 2-1 to Bulwell FC in the Floodlit Cup Final.

The ultimate goal was achieved when AFC Mansfield were accepted into The ToolStation Northern Counties East League for the 201415 season.

The club further extended its community based teams and had 13 teams competing in the 2014-15 season from U9’s to the 1st Team.

Having had Micky Taylor since formation the club were forced to look for another manager 10 games into the season when Micky stepped down.

The 2015-16 season began with an 11 game unbeaten run in the league, promotion was the priority and as the season went on any cup competition took a back seat.

Always in the top four throughout the season a poor January saw The Bulls drop 11 points and allowed Hemsworth MW the chance to pull away.

With an automatic spot still to play for AFC Mansfield went on an 11 game unbeaten run to finish as KEY they had started and claim the proCUTTING motion they had been planning for SERVICE since the first game of the season.

Ten points were dropped in seven games and the directors of the club secured the services of Rudy Funk midway through the season.

STANDING VIEW Growing up looking over the ground from my bedroom window Harrogate Railway has been a part of my life as long as I can remember.

From sneaking in to play on the pitch to watching on a weekend.

I actually bought my 1st legal pint in the old clubhouse when I reached 18.

More recently my dad was the steward for 5 years during my early 20s.

It was natural progression to join the committee and have seen two major FA cup runs whilst been involved.

My role on the committee now as special events coordinator sees me organising the now annual bonfire and overseeing the partnership with Starbeck gala.

Match day, I wear two

caps; I arrive at the ground an hour before kick-off and operate the turnstile until half time.

Its great seeing the new faces and having the banter with the away fans.

Half time arrives and I rush off to be an extra pair of hands at the canteen.

I’ve made a lot of good friends over my time here and had some really good times.

It really is a family club my young daughter joins me on most days and helps me out as does my wife who has worked on and off behind the bar now for nearly 20 years.

OLLERTON TOWN FC League Cup Opponents 7:45pm Tuesday 16 August 2016 Ollerton has a long history of local football going back to the late 1800s. One of its best periods was immediately before the Second World War when Ollerton Colliery won the Notts Senior Cup in 1937/38 and its reserve team won the Notts Intermediate Cup the year previous.

Ollerton Colliery ceased as a football club in the early 1980s but was reformed as Ollerton & Bevercotes F.C in 1988. The club won the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Division Two championship in 1992–93, gaining promotion to Division One under the management of Adge Owen and David Kent.

Following the closure of the colliery in 1994, the club changed its name to Ollerton Town F.C. In the same year, Ollerton were champions of Division One in 1995– 96 and were promoted to the top division of the Notts Alliance. After finishing runners-up in 1999–2000, the club was promoted to the Central Midlands League[1] and entered the English Football Pyramid.

In the 2007–08 season, Ollerton, under the management of Don Gethfield, David Kent and Anthony Thompson, the club won the Central Midlands Premier Division, earning promotion to the Supreme Division. That season they also reached the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup final where they were beaten 2–0 by Eastwood Town.

In 2008–09, the club took part in the FA Vase for the very first time, getting to the second round proper in 2009–10.

After the resignation of Don Gethfield back in 2011, and a brief stint under Paul Rawden, the club appointed Dave Winter and Stephen Bodle as first team managers.

The pair guided the club to the Central Midlands Floodlit Cup final in their first season.

For the 2011–12 season, the club was placed in the Central Midlands North Division following a league restructure.

In the 2015–16 season, with former-captain Jamie Allan now also on board as first team coach, the club secured promotion to the Northern Counties East League after finishing runners-up in the Central Midlands North Division. This is the first time the club will play at the step 6 level of the English football pyramid.
