Who’s Watching Who?
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Wider View, Harrogate Railway’s online version of our match-day programme. The subject of using video technology in football is one that has attracted much debate in recent years, and in my opinion, should be embraced.
Supporters from teams all over the country and beyond often feel they are being unfairly treated by officials; I have certainly seen some actions towards referees this season that would suggest so. It is strange, however, that most people involved with football are in unanimous agreement that the man in the middle has an extremely difficult job and needs more help. Introducing technology would likely have financial attachments that may not make it suitable for this level of football, but surely given the success of goal line technology it has to be given a fair shot. A ‘fourth official’ type figure who sits in a room somewhere in the stadium and watches the match on a five second delay and access to replays is one possibility that could work.
The extra official would be in constant contact with the referee and could inform them within seconds of an incident happening whether play needs to be brought back. For example, a goal kick is given by the referee that is hotly disputed by players of the opposite team as they felt it should have been a corner. In the time it takes for the referee to wave away protests and the goalkeeper to take the kick, the extra official could have come to a definite decision and informed the referee. With the official having access to replays and making the decision, players have no valid argument with the referee, much like goal line technology, and would have to accept the decision. This is one example of how technology could work, but it could also be used for penalty claims, offside goals and more. During today’s game there is sure to be a contentious decision, when this occurs think about the time it takes for play to resume, I am certain in that time the correct decision can be made! Prescot Cables Match Report
Survival Boost as Railway get vital three points and beat in-form Prescot Cables Nathan Curtis and Charlie Clamp struck within the space of four second half minutes to complete a come from behind win against Prescot Cables on Monday night. The win moves Railway five points from safety, but it was not straight forward as Rob Doran notched his 24th goal of the season after just three minutes. A second half switch to a back three allowed Curtis to level on 65 minutes and Clamp to finish off a deadly Rail attack four minutes later after Amar Purewal’s pull back. 20
Prescot piled men forward, but
were repeatedly denied by Chandler Hallwood, Simon Parkes, Harry Coates and co who carried Railway over the line for what could be a crucial win. Lee Ashforth made three changes from Saturday’s trip to Ossett Town; replacing Luca Mellor, Will Peers and Matty Lovegreen with Parkes, Clamp and Stephen Bromley. Doran scored four the last time the two sides met, and wasted no time finding the net against Railway for a fifth time this season, latching on to Lloyd Dean’s through ball and placing into the bottom right corner.
The creator of the opener then had to be replaced when, after a slick passing move, Dean went to ground in the Railway area and looked to dislocate his shoulder, with an ambulance later arriving at the ground. Railway first made inroads towards the Tigers goal after 29 minutes when Curtis cut back from the left by-line and powered towards goal, only for a visiting defender to get his body in the way and block. Harrogate Railway 2-1 Prescot Cables uncharacteristically firing over with just Hallwood to beat. Railway twice thought they had levelled in the dying stages of the half when Chris Ovington smashed past Marcus Burgess on two occasions only to be flagged offside both times. Three minutes into first half stoppage time Railway created their best chance when Dan Thirkell slid a pass to Purewal who tried to lift over the advancing ‘keeper but placed his finish the wrong side of the post. The second half started quieter than the first half finished, with Bromley and Coates both getting in the way of Andy Scarisbrick’s shots. With Ashforth knowing something had to be done to haul Railway back into the game, the gaffer introduced Beesley and switched to a back three just after the hour mark. The move paid immediate dividends as Bromley bent a pass in
behind the Prescot defence that Curtis raced on to and remained composed to level the scores. Before Cables had chance to react, Railway claimed another as Coates spread the play left towards Purewal who accelerated past his marker and sent a low cross in to the path of Clamp to bury into an empty net. Prescot piled men forward, but it was Railway who continued to create the best chances as Curtis’ pace on the break allowed the striker to cut inside and flash a right footed shot in front of goal. Second half substitute Will Peers then came a fraction away from sealing the win deep into stoppage time as he crashed an edge of the box volley off the inside of the post after Beesley’s shot had been bravely blocked. The referee’s whistle soon sounded and Railway picked up their fifth league win of the season to reduce the deficit to five points with four games remaining.

New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 ( they were founding members in 1982 ) and enjoyed another successful period under the guidance of manager Tony Hancock and assistant Paul Kirkham. After winning the Second Division Trophy in 2007, the following season saw the team break numerous Club records as they won the Division Two Championship by ten points. 2008/09 saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup, but following an unprecedented twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Unibond League was only denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde which resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference. The 2009/10 season again saw The Millers as bridesmaids for the second successive season as this time Newcastle Town grabbed the solitary promotion place to The Evo Stik League. The Club also enjoyed success in The FA Vase and reached the last sixteen for the first time in its history before The Northern League’s
Norton and Stockton Ancients spoilt the Wembley dream. Thankfully 2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division. Winning the first seven games of the season, Ally Pickering’s side set the pace from start to finish before being presented with the Championship trophy after the game against local rivals Glossop North End on Easter Monday. The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. It was a successful season off the field as well as the Club achieved the prestigious FA Charter Standard Adult Club status which was an excellent recognition for all the hard work that has been put in by everybody connected with the Club. 2011/12 represented a significant landmark as the Club celebrated
its 125th Anniversary. Amongst many events which took place, probably the biggest saw Manchester United play a friendly game at Church Lane and the publication of “ The Millers Tale “, a book chronicling the history of the Club. That year also saw the first team’s debut season in The Evo Stik Northern Premier League and after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish. 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months. It was all change as the first team were reallocated into The Northern Division and new manager Roy Soule lead his side into the play offs where they were eventually beaten in the semi-final by two extra time strikes from Trafford. The reserves secured the Club’s ninth Derbyshire FA Divisional Cup North success following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Dove Holes at Silverlands, the home of Buxton FC, in April. The Club’s Under 18 side, which further developed the working

relationship with New Mills Juniors, also brought some silverware to Church Lane as they celebrated their inaugural season in The Stockport Metro Junior Football League by winning The Division Two title. 2013/14 was an all-together more trickier season with the Club having to overcome many hurdles, none more so than contending with the wettest High Peak winter in living memory which produced the inevitable March / April fixture backlog. The first team, who endured a high turnover of playing staff, eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North whilst the reserves finished as runners up to Glossop North End in The North West Counties Football League. The bright spark was once again provided by the Club’s youth team who lost only one game as they won The Stockport Metro Junior Football League Division One Championship by a fourteen point margin. 32
The highlight of 2014/15 was undoubtedly provided again by
the Under 18’s who completed the perfect League season – eighteen wins from eighteen games. A good number of these young players were duly incorporated into the Club’s new Development Squad who finished in a very creditable mid-table position in The Western Division of The Lancashire League. Unfortunately the first team endured a campaign of almost constant struggle and were only reprieved from relegation back to The North West Counties Football League by The Football Association in May. Manager Roy Soule, who worked tirelessly during his tenure at Church Lane, tendered his resignation during the summer and was subsequently replaced by former Stalybridge Celtic assistant Andy Fearn.
