That ‘R’ Word It has been a difficult season. There is no doubt about that.
know how to play together.
With five games left, we find ourselves eight points behind Ossett Town, who have two games more than us to play.
The club has shown faith in Lee and I have seen the makings of a superb manager - it just takes patience to allow him to build the squad around his ideas.
We’ve won four games this season, drawn nine in all competitions and now face the prospect of finishing second bottom in the league.
Trust and faith is simply something that many clubs do not show in their managers, panicking at the first signs of when things go wrong.
Contrast that to last season when we won 19, drew 13 and lost 10 - ending eighth in the league.
Now some reading this will point out that Railway face relegation. Yes we do. But we have assembled a core of young, talented players with bags of potential.
Doesn’t make pretty reading does it. However, the statistics tell one story and yes, we will be judged by the wider audience with those stats at 5pm Saturday 23rd April - but the real story is more complex. Over the summer, Railway lost a manager and a lot of talented players. Nearly all clubs would struggle to lose the players we did. That’s not to say that the players we started the new season with weren’t good enough, but a new manager and new players means that it takes time to get to
Lee has a three year plan and this is the first and most difficult year of that plan one that involved a forced rebuild of the squad. For those rushing to judge; compare Lee’s first season not with Billy Miller’s record breaking final season at Railway, but his first. Makes you think doesn’t it. Lee deserves our trust, patience and above all our faith. Five games to go and who knows how the season will end, there are still points to play for and maybe...just maybe?

Harrogate Railway lose what was billed as a ‘must-win’ game against fellow relegation threatened Ossett Town
Harrogate Railway’s hopes of survival were dealt a blow on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated 2-1 at Ossett Town.
Luca Mellor, while only Lawrance Hunter, Dan Thirkell and Will Peers remained from the abandoned tie earlier this season.
Alex Peterson only had to tap in from a yard, but somehow couldn’t find the elusive touch and allowed bodies back in to clear.
Ossett started the strongest and took the lead in the 20th minute when Danny Frost smashed home, though Rail found an equaliser ten minutes before the break through Amar Purewal’s clinical finish.
The home side came flying out the traps and went close within the first minute when the returning Frost flashed a left footed shot across the face of goal.
Former Town striker Nathan Curtis then almost found the opener with a powerful shot, but Tom Beaurepaire saved well to keep the game goalless.
The visitors bombarded the Ossett goal in the second half in search of a winner, but were undone by Simon Rogers’ looping header that opens up an eight point gap between Railway and safety.

Railway had a few early sights of goal themselves as Harry Coates sent a shot into the back of Purewal who, minutes later, tried to curl in but found Rogers in the way. Chandler Hallwood then showed quick reactions to beat away Steve Ridley’s deflected shot, but was caught out minutes later when Town created the best chance of the afternoon.
After 20 minutes, Frost made Ossett’s early dominance pay off as he powered in unchallenged following Hallwood denying Peterson’s free header from six yards out. Ossett Town 2-1 Harrogate Railway Ovington and Curtis combined, with the latter stretching to make contact with a low cross, but being unable to divert goal wards. Purewal then fired Railway back onto level terms when a long goal kick picked out the Darlington loanee, who expertly held off his marker and darted towards goal before shooting right footed into the far corner.
Railway then had a big appeal for a penalty turned down in the 73rd minute when Matty Lovegreen’s long throw found its’ way to the back post where it looked to be handled before Dan Thirkell could reach it. It wasn’t given though, and six minutes later Rogers, the only survivor from November’s abandoned match, broke the hearts of Railway.
Anthony Mackie went close for Ossett on the break, but couldn’t put his left footed shot between the sticks before Hunter threaded Ovington through on goal, but Beaurepaire closed down quickly block.
A rare Ossett free kick inside the Harrogate half was not cleared properly and delivered back in towards Rogers who acrobatically looped a header backwards and into the far corner.
Purewal continued to look a threat in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as he sent a volley into the face of Xander M’Burnie who took the full force of the strike.
Ashforth threw on strikers Stephen Bromley and Dan Barrett as Railway prepared an all-out assault on the Ossett goal, though it was Hunter’s right footed volley that went closest, but was well caught by Beaurepaire.
With 20 minutes to go, Ossett knew a draw would be better for them than it would their visitors, and subsequently got men behind the ball and looked to hit on the counter. The strategy almost paid off as Liam Schofield arrowed one just past the far post and M’Burnie’s near post shot was comfortably saved by Hallwood.

Prescot Cables’ History
Prescot Football Club was formed in 1884 and the first organised game of Association Football ever played in Prescot took place against the second team of a local St Helens side, St Thomas. Prescot lost 3-1. After playing friendly games for the first five years, Prescot entered the Liverpool & District League in 1889. Prescot’s highest finishing position in that league was third in 1891-92, the year in which Prescot entered the FA Cup for the first time.

A home game against Crewe Alexandra attracted 3,000 spectators to Prescot’s ‘Slacky Brow’ ground, where Prescot were beaten 7-1.
Prescot joined the Lancashire Alliance in 1895 and were champions in 1899-1900.
The Liverpool County Combination became the Prescot club’s sixth league, in 1911-12.
The club finished bottom the following year but joined the higher standard Lancashire League for 1901-02.
Leagues were suspended in 1914 for the Great War and the postwar Prescot club dropped ‘Athletic’ from its name and joined the Lancashire Combination Liverpool Section.
A ground dispute resulted in Prescot dropping out of the league in 1902-03 and Prescot FC was dormant until 1906 when an athletic and football ground was opened at Hope Street and Prescot Athletic FC, was formed. Prescot Athletic started in the St Helens & District League and won the championship in the first year, after which they joined the Liverpool League for four seasons.
In their first season, 1918-19, Prescot finished runners-up to Tranmere Rovers but did not fare too well the following season and the club returned to the more locally-based Liverpool County Combination for the 1920-21 season and spent a further seven years in that league. In what was clearly an early form of commercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables and the team colours became black and amber to commemorate a bit of local industrial history, as the first successful insulated cable drawn at Prescot was covered with black and amber paper.

Prescot Cables joined the Lancashire Combination In 1928-29 and, in 1929, applied to join the Football League Third Division (North), along with four other hopefuls. All the applicants failed, although one, Mansfield Town, was successful two years later.
In 1980, the name of Prescot Cables was re-taken and in 1982, Cables became a member of the newly formed North West Counties League where they remained for 20 years.
In 1978-79 they returned to the Cheshire County League, in Division Two, after an absence of 42 years. Prescot were Division Two champions the following season, with Accrington Stanley as runners-up.
Prescot finished in the top 10 in NWCL Division One in all but Prescot’s association with the one season since 1990 and, in Lancashire Combination lasted for 2001-02, the club had its most almost 50 years, apart from a brief successful season for over two spell spent in the Cheshire Coun- decades, winning the Worthingty League in the 1930’s. Ground improvements were carried out at Valerie Park (formerly known as Hope Street) to meet the ground standard and ensure that Prescot could take their place in the higher league. For the season 2004-05, Prescot found themselves playing at the highest level in their history. Due to a suitable finishing position, and the re-organisation of the football pyramid, Prescot took their place in the Unibond Premier Division. As a result of a team unable to forfill their fixtures, and after the controversial intervention of the FA, Cables were elevated to 5th position in the league. Cables had the opportunity to gain promotion to the Conference North, however, defeat at Workington in the first play-off game ended that dream for now ! For the season 2005-06, it was a case of consolidation with a new football committee being formed from the Supporters Club. The previous football club, Prescot Cables, was transferred over to an-

other organisation, namely Prescot Football Club Ltd (although trading as Prescot Cables Football Club). The club produced another mid-table finish in the following season to avoid becoming involved in another non-league ‘shake-up’ that saw two Unibond First Divisions being created for the 2007/08 season. On the final game of the 2007/08 campaign, Prescot was 15 minutes from relegation. Two late goals secured a win at Lincoln United and survival. Due to the tightness of points and goal difference, Cables eventually finished in 13th place ! Shortly after the season’s end, the ground was purchased by Triman Developments Ltd from Mr Mercer’s company (the former Chairman of the club, Prescot Cables AFC). The current football club are working on ground improvements in order to provide the team and supporters with an opportunity to move forward. 30
A dreadful 2008/09 season saw Prescot propping up the Premier
Division. Manager Andy Gray departed for Burscough. He was replaced by Joe Gibiliru who embarked on a fresh start with player personnel. Joe managed to bring some much needed stability to the club as the team finished in mid table. 2010 saw some of Cables regular performers leave for pastures new and several fresh faces arrive. Gibiliru was relieved of his duties around the time of the big freeze in December 2010 and assistant Dave Ridler took over. He managed to secure Cables Evo-Stik league status for another season. The 2011-12 season was a tale of five managers. Dave Ridler (who left for Australia in January 2012), Karl Bell, Karl Connolly all took charge for at least one match. Following the controversial departure of Shaun Reid to Warrington Town in March, Joe Gibiliru took over for the remaining games. The team and club re-grouped after the Reid fiasco to finish the season strongly to defy the odds and remain part of the Evo-Stik
League. David Powell was the new man in charge for the 2012-13 season. A virtually new squad assembled with inconsistent performances and results as a consequence. The playing surface and weather conditions forced many postponements. When matches finally began in earnest in the New Year, Cables produced one of their most successful periods since the 2003 North West Counties campaign. A scheme asking donators to sponsor a pitch square in order to afford the much needed renovation the pitch, took on a life of its own. In the end the scheme became over subscribed. Circumstances arose that led to David Powell leaving the club. In his place for the 2014-15 season came Neil Prince, who at 31, must be the youngest manager in Cables history and probably in the current Evo-Stik League. With limited resources the team managed to secure their Evo-Stik status.
