Connections As some of you may know, I am not only one of the press/media people for Harrogate Railway, but also a full time sports photographer. In the past week I’ve covered Harrogate Railway v Lancaster City, Hull v Nottingham Forest, Harrogate Town v Silsden and Middlesbrough v Hull City. There is one thing that connects all these games, something that is so fundamental that it can get overlooked in the modern world of making the books balance. Passion. It doesn’t matter if the team is pushing for promotion into the Premier League or fighting relegation from the lowest tier of the FA pyramid. The passion shown for the game is the same from the players and fans no matter what level. It seems that all grassroot sports are suffering from falling attendences, less revenue and a general apathy towards them in certain respects. However, the core support for all teams remains the same and it is this that keeps many of them going. It seems that the financial rewards for clubs at the top are disproportionate and the financial realities for the clubs at the bottom are only too real.
club were to donate £25,000 to teams in the lower reaches of the FA pyramid, it would make a huge difference. Many clubs would become financially secure for one or two seasons, afording them breathing space to concentrate on football rather than financial issues. I doubt that most Premier League and Championship clubs would even miss that amount of money. If the FA fails to properly support all clubs then there will be a crisis in the lower and non-league as more teams at the lower levels fail. Fewer clubs could mean less players coming through and maybe there won’t be an opportunity for the next Jamie Vardy to emerge from non-league. It is great to see the big foreign stars playing for the league clubs, but I think it is more exciting to see home-grown talent emerge and take on the very best the world has to show. There needs to be investment in grassroots football to help fund clubs, provide them with help on how to be run successfully, to help bring through players, develop them and hopefully take their careers into the football leagues. Over the past week, I’ve seen attendences that range from nearly 20,000 all the way down to around 100.
The new TV deal coming in for the 2016/17 season will only widen that gap and to an unimaginable amount.
It doesn’t matter what the numbers are though, the passion felt by the supporters is the same...it is just a shame that the money isn’t.

Harrogate Railway 1 Lancaster City 3 A second half stroke of luck turned the tide in Lancaster’s favour as Harrogate Railway were beaten 3-1 at Station View. After a goalless first half, Billy Akrigg’s left wing cross floated over Chandler Hallwood and into the net to give the visitors a rather fortunate lead ten minutes after the break. Tom Kilifin made it two nil with a neat finish in the 82nd minute to give Railway a mountain to climb, though the hosts pulled a goal back when Harry Coates was manhandled in the area and Lawrance Hunter converted the spot kick. It was too little, too late for Railway though, whose Luca Mellor was penalised deep into stoppage time; allowing Ryan Winder to make it 3-1 with the last kick of the game. Lee Ashforth made two changes from Monday night’s draw with Witton Albion, replacing Will Peers and Chris Ovington with Daniel Devine and the fit-again Amar Purewal. Rob Youhill had started the afternoon

Lancaster City Match Report with purpose, driving at the Lancaster defence and flashing across the face of goal before Coates was called into action at the other end, reacting quickest to slide in and clear a dangerous cross. The contest’s first shot on target came in the 17th minute when Nathan Curtis sent a well hit volley from the edge of the box into the arms of Michael Hale. Akrigg had a go from range but was way off target before Youhill again caused problems for Lancaster, this time shooting just wide of the far post from a right wing position. Dan Thirkell came closest on the half hour mark when Railway’s Captain carried the ball forward and took aim for the bottom left corner only for Hale to get down remarkably quickly and tip round the post. The skipper threatened again before the half time whistle, but this time Thirkell’s fierce
looking shot was blocked before it could reach the visitors’ goal. Clearly not happy with his side’s performance, Phil Brown made two changes at the break; introducing new signing Bobby Langford and scorer in the last meeting between the clubs Kilifin into the action. Curtis and Coates both went close for Railway in the opening stages, before Lancaster mustered a first effort on target in the 53rd minute as Hallwood denied Richard Mercer heading in at the back post. The visitors then took the lead in bizarre circumstances as Akrigg sent in a cross from the left that looped over the head of Hallwood and clipped the upright before rolling into the net. Railway soon had Hunter to thank for keeping the score at one nil as the in-form Zach Clark glanced a header past Hallwood at the near post only

Lancaster had looked a better side since going ahead, and almost had a second only for Hallwood to get the better of Kilifin at the far post and Coates to block the follow up attempt. Ashforth introduced Stephen Bromley to spark a comeback, and the striker almost made an immediate impact when Youhill’s delivery fell his way, but Jacob Davis got his body in the way of the effort. Bromley was involved again with ten minutes to go, setting up Curtis to put the ball into the net only to be flagged offside by the assistant referee.
With three minutes to go of normal time, Railway were handed a lifeline as Coates was brought down inside the area and referee Jamie Rhodes pointed to the spot. Hunter stepped up confidently to score and set up a frantic final few minutes, though just six minutes later the man in the middle awarded another penalty, to Lancaster this time, as Luca Mellor was bundled into an attacker. With almost the final kick of the game, Winder stroked the ball into the bottom right corner to put to bed any hopes of a Harrogate comeback and keep Ashforth’s men inside the bottom two for another week.
With Railway pouring men forward, Lancaster found space on the break and made the hosts pay when Kilifin eventually beat Hallwood with a powerful strike that the 18-year-old ‘keeper could only tip onto the inside of the post. 9

CLITHEROE HISTORY The club was formed as Clitheroe Central in 1877 at the Swan Hotel in Castle Street by local businessmen. After playing in local leagues, the club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and dropped Central from their name. Aside from breaks during the First and Second World Wars, the club continued to play in the Combination until the end of the 1981-82 season, when it combined with the Cheshire League to become the North West Counties League. Success had been sparing prior to that date, with a Lancashire Junior Cup win in 1893, the Lancashire Combination Cup in 1934-5 and the League Championship in 1979-80 all that the club had to show for its efforts. That was soon to change. Although Clitheroe were put into the Third Division of the NWCFL at its inception due to the state of the ground, there followed the most successful period in the club’s long history under the stewardship of Eric Whalley,
subsequently manager and Chairman of Accrington Stanley FC. He assembled one of the best non league sides in the North of England and won back to back Championships in the Third, Second and First divisions, as well as securing the Lancashire Cup for the first time in 50 years, thanks to a solitary strike from local lad Eric Geldard. This was all the more impressive when one considers that the Division 1 was effectively Level 3 in the non-league pyramid. Captained by Mick Ashcroft and containing extravagant talents such as John Taylor and Steve Mullen, possibly the best player ever to play for the Blues, Clitheroe regularly attracted bumper gates, with the championship winning season seeing three crowds over 1,000. Cracks started to appear when Whalley took over the manager’s seat at Accrington and took almost the whole first team with him. To compound matters, the new Unibond Division 1 was formed, but a lack of floodlights meant the Blues

Clitheroe History could not take their rightful place and they found teams effectively leapfrogging them. It was not until the mid nineties that the Club recovered from this setback and started to fulfil its potential and not only to become a force in the NWCFL Division 1 again, but also to make itself known on the national FA Vase stage. Possibly the highlight of the club’s history came when the Blues reached the Vase Final under the joint managership of Dennis Underwood and Gary Butcher after an epic two legged semi Final win against Mangotsfield of Bristol. 2,000 people were on Shawbridge for the second leg when a deflected goal saw the Blues home with seven minutes of extra time remaining. The Final pitted the Blues against a powerful Brigg side and a 3-0 reverse in front of 7,500 fans was a fair reflection of the play. At the same time, some £130,000 was being spent on the ground, with the sale of Jon Penman to South-
port and Carlo Nash to Crystal Palace (within one month of the Vase final) helping considerably. The Wembley experience turned the Blues into a Vase side and a Quarter Final defeat against Tiverton in 1998/99 and a two leg reverse against Taunton in the 2000/01 semi final gave the Blues national prominence. The Taunton season was memorable for a number of reasons. Beating the pre tournament favourites Chippenham in the quarter final on their own patch in front of 1,500 fans was notable enough. However the two legged semi against Taunton Town would never be forgotten. With the first leg away and the game only just surviving an absolute deluge, the Blues went in at half time 5-0 down and reduced to 10 men. There was not much good humour amongst the 150 travelling Blues over that cup of Bovril. No further goals
Clitheroe History followed, but with manager Dave Burgess throwing caution to the wind in the home second leg, the fans dared to dream with 3 goals for the home side in the first 15 minutes (including hitting the post) and the Taunton keeper being stretchered off, but in the end Clitheroe went down 8-4 on aggregate. The 2000-01 season was also notable for the Blues finishing as league runners up to Bradford PA in controversial circumstances , before Dave Burgess stood down and central defender Lee Sculpher took over as player manager. In 2002/3, Clitheroe again finished as league runners up and lost to Mossley at Gigg Lane in the League Cup Final. Early cup exits the following season enabled the Blues to concentrate on the league and superb away form saw the Blues capture the 2003/04 league title on the final day of the season at Nantwich where Blues legend Neil Reynolds sparked bedlam when he thumped a 25 yarder into the
top corner with six minutes of the season remaining. High hopes accompanied Clitheroe’s first foray into the Unibond League in 2004/05, but the club never fully recovered from manager Lee Sculpher resigning after a handful of games into the new season. He was succeeded by Paul Byrom who then quit in the close season. Tommy Lawson was appointed manager for the 2005/06 season but he was relieved of his duties in early 2006, to be replaced on a temporary basis by Mark Smitheringale. He too left before the 2006/07 season started and his assistant Chris Stammers stepped up to the plate before resigning after a 10-1 thumping away to Conference North Kettering in the FA Trophy in November 2006. The then chairman Carl Garner offered the job to Neil Reynolds and Pete Smith at the turn of 2007, before the latter took on the role in his own right at the end of the 2008/09 season. 2009/10 and 2010/11 saw

Clitheroe History Clitheroe finishing in eight and sixth respectively, the highest league placings in the club’s history. The end of the 10/11 season also had a unique twist with Carl Garner stepping down as chairman after four years to replace Pete Smith as manager, in the process going unbeaten throughout April and taking the manager of the month prize. Garner was replaced in the role of chair by his long standing deputy Anne Barker. Despite the great end to the previous campaign, the 2011/12 season under Garner’s leadership was ultimately disappointing, although it had started so brightly with an early manager of the month award. Form quickly tailed off and huge player turnover ensued, before Garner resigned and the managerial Vase duo of Burgess and Sculpher ensured survival on a temporary basis, having taken over with less than 10 games to go. Paul Moore, the ex Leek Town
and Warrington Town manager, took over the reins in 2012/13 and led Clitheroe to their record points total in Division 1 in finishing eighth, with the play-off push only ending over the final games of the season. However, the loss of key players in the close season led to a woeful start in 2013/14 and to an early exit from the FA Cup and Trophy, and the committee replaced Moore with ex Blue Simon Garner, who was taking his first step on the managerial ladder. Garner and his assistant, another ex Blue Ryan Parr, finished in 17th position that season, but set their stall out in 2014-15 to create a more east Lancashire focussed team with key assets secured on contract. A 13th place finish, with victories against many of the top sides, and an appearance at the Reebok in the Lancashire Trophy against Chorley represented good progress and the duo will be looking to kick on from there in 2015-16.
Clitheroe History Off the pitch, chair Anne Barker has overseen the incorporation of the club as a limited company, the renewal of the ground lease and the replacement of the clubhouse, changing rooms and toilet block at a cost of over £100K. The club also reintroduced a Youth team in 2014-15, which play in the
Lancashire Sunday League. They won their league cup and finished runners up in their first season under Tom Bartlett’s guidance, and have not only provided players for the first team, but have also reinforced the club’s links to the town and the Clitheroe Wolves set up.
