A Black Art Over the course of this season, we have seen both good and bad officials in charge of the games in the Evo-Stik Leagues. One game I’ve been to, I watched a ball go out under the assistant referee’s nose while he was intently watching the play, then looked up to seek guidance from the referee which way to flag. During another, I watched a referee struggle to keep up with the play and give decisions based more on who was shouting the loudest than what had happened. The purpose of these few words is not to criticise the officials in charge of our beautiful game, but to praise them. Lee has often said that he will not criticise an official, because they do a difficult job and he respects them for doing it. To date, I have not heard him give abuse to any of the officials, irrespective of the decisions that he may have felt had gone against his team. But unfortunately, I cannot say that of all the teams, managers and fans. I’ve heard some vile and terrible things said in the direction of the men dressed in black. Things that on reflection, most people wouldn’t normally say to another human being. It seems that, once the whistle has blown, there is a suspension of normality and the referee and his assistants can become the target of some terrible abuse - depending on the decisions they do or don’t make.
I know the arguments that can be made - their decisions can make the difference between a team taking three points, one point or no points from a match. Their decisions can mean a player is sent off, not sent off, the awarding of a penalty or a free kick. Their decisions can make the difference between a manger being sacked or keeping his job. Their decisions can mean promotion, safety or relegation. Yes, all those things can be levelled against the officials. However, one decision does not make or break a season. Was it the decision in the last minute of the final game of the season that means a team doesn’t get promotion - or was it the first decision to disallow a goal in the opening games? We all need to understand that officiating football matches is a difficult and subjective task and we must be more understanding of how they do their job. After all, the referee and his assistants are doing the best they can for a game they love every bit as much as we do. So the next time you go to shout abuse at the officials...stop, think and consider what you are about to say. Would you say that to your boss, co-workers or family? If not, then it is probably not worth saying. We hope you enjoy the game today and that the officials enjoy it too.

Prescot Cables 4 Harrogate Railway 2 Red-hot Rob Doran’s four goals in 19 minutes was the difference as Prescot Cables extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a 4-2 win over ten-man Harrogate Railway. The in-form striker squeezed a shot into the net after 21 minutes before heading in left wing crosses in the 23rd and 32nd minute to give The Tigers a commanding lead. Chris Ovington sneaked one in at the near post to hand Railway a lifeline, but Doran claimed his fourth with five minutes left of the half to make it 4-1 at the interval. Railway’s task was made harder in the 63rd minute when Harry Coates was shown a straight red card, though the ten men pulled together with Dan Barrett’s injury time finish giving the visitors reward for their efforts. Lee Ashforth made two changes from Monday night’s heavy defeat to league leaders Warrington Town; replacing Alex Low and Daniel Devine with Lawrance Hunter and Tom Owen.

Prescot Cables Match Report The contest started at a frantic pace with Owen almost capitalising on a Jonah O’Rielly mistake and Chandler Hallwood collecting Doran’s low shot. Railway had a strong penalty appeal turned down after 16 minutes when Hunter played in Ovington on the left only to be brought down by a Prescot defender, fairly according to the referee. Andy Paxton’s men began to take the ascendancy in the 20th minute when Lloyd Dean saw a stinging shot turned behind by Hallwood who was lucky not to be beaten from the following corner as Phil Bannister fluffed his lines at the far post. Cables then made their pressure pay when James Edgar rattled the bar from long range, allowing Doran to collect the rebound and drive the ball through bodies into the net. The striker wasted no time in
claiming his 20th goal of the season two minutes later when he confidently headed a left wing cross into the corner. Owen had a powerful shot blocked just seconds after Railway went two behind, but it was soon three nil as Doran completed his eleven minute hat-trick. The third was almost a carbon copy of the striker’s second as Doran got enough power on his header from another left sided cross to beat Hallwood from close range. Three minutes later Railway found a response when, after a Railway free kick was pumped into the box, Rob Youhill cleverly found Ovington whose near post shot was fumbled into the side of his own net by Marcus Burgess. Two minutes after the goal, Hallwood reacted well to keep the score at 3-1, keeping out Edgar’s low drive with his feet.
Railway’s Spirited Second Half With five minutes until the half time whistle, Hallwood again saved from Edgar, but this time Doran was first to react to the loose ball and volleyed home.
Barrett had been introduced prior to the hour mark and got in behind the Prescot defence soon after, only to poke a finish onto the roof of the net.
Railway’s boss made two changes at the break, replacing Luca Mellor and Charlie Clamp with Alex Low and Will Peers in the hope of getting back into the contest.
The visitors went close again with 20 minutes to play when Ovington got on the end of Hunter’s cross only for Burgess to deny the attacker a second goal.
The match continued in the same fashion though, as Lloyd Dean found himself with a free header six yards out only to be denied by Hallwood’s reaction save.
Barrett then managed to put the ball in the back of the net only to look up and see the linesman had raised his flag to rule the goal out for offside.
The afternoon then took another bad turn for Ashforth’s men when Coates was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity when bringing down the through-on-goal Dean. Railway reacted positively to going a man down though, as Low smashed the crossbar with a sweetly struck half volley from the edge of the box.
Ovington continued to threaten the Prescot goal, cutting inside and shooting into Burgess’ arms, while Edgar tried a couple of efforts from range but couldn’t hit the target. Deep into second half stoppage time Barrett’s efforts were rewarded when the striker ran clean through on goal and coolly rolled the ball to the ‘keeper’s left. There was just enough time 9

Lee Ashforth’s Review Its been an eventful first half of the season or slightly over half now. We have played 25 league games and 6 cup games.

We have used 36 players so far, although 6 of these played 3 or less before leaving the club.
I can gloss it up as much as we want but we aren’t in a position that we wanted, however we are still in the fight and we are still improving and we will get out of the bottom two places and remain in the evostick.
So 30 players in a season that has been a transitional one. Our first game was a draw at home against Droylsden when we scored after 3 minutes through Vinny Dhesi. From the starting eleven that day to our last game against Spennymoor only 4 players started both games, Tom Goodwin, Lau-

Lee Ashforth’s Review squad at the start of the season. I believe 30 points will be enough to stay in the league and that must now be our main target. I think about the moments that stick out to me on the pitch throughout the season so far and the back to back wins against Radcliffe and Mossley in early September and the last minute equaliser against Brighouse in October were high on my list. On the flip side conceding a 94th minute goal against Northwich who were then undefeated and who can forget leading 3-0 at half-time against Ossett Town only for the game to be called off. We have not had much luck with fixtures, we seem to always play against the form team, or is that just the way it feels when you are near the bottom? That said, we now have some great games ahead and the last 13 fixtures of the season look really interesting and all could be games we may take points from. The next four also but they include Northwich and Warrington that will be two extremely hard tests.
Off the field the changes have been as big, Nigel Corner resigned as Chairman only to come back as acting Chairman 3 months later. Nigel has said he will stand down at the end of the season so changes will happen again. I have a lot of time for Nigel, he takes things to heart and I know he hurts as much as I do when we lose, or things do not go as smoothly as he would like. We have recently had Rob Northfield reenter the club in an advisory role and he has been a great help so far. Hal and Mark our media guys who work tirelessly to promote the club in a positive light through all the media outlets and both do an amazing job. Dennis Wise and Ian Docherty rarely miss an away game and help with the kit and transport of players and it does not go unnoticed. There are others that work hard behind the scenes and I guarantee I have missed someone, but Chris Parkes who I deal with on a weekly basis with expenses is important to me, Steve Thirkell the groundsman, Ray Dodds, Alan Smith, Dave Green, Ann Kirk, Gaz
Lee Ashforth’s Review and Emma, Chris Watts, Sandy and Chris and the bar staff are all superb. Finally and I left him till last on purpose, Dave Shephard, he hates me writing about him and mentioning him, but tough, the amount of work he does is nothing short of amazing, signing players, forms, dealing with the league, match days, postponements, referees and listening to me chomp his ear off on a daily basis. All of these people are voluntary, let that sink in for a minute, a club in the Evostick, without these people we are nothing. Managers and players come and go, Proven none more so when this summer the manager Billy Miller left and half of the squad left too, but the people named are still here, they go unnoticed and for me thats not right but its the way of the world. The manager and players are always in the papers and in the media, but what about the true club people, they matter, so when you come through the gate to watch the team and enjoy what we are trying to do, every now now and again have a chat with these
people and buy them a cuppa or a beer and remember that when I have gone, and the players have left we will always now be in the history of a great club, thats what we will be, history, these people never stop creating history at this great club, I am honoured to be a part of the history and will do all I can to be here as long as I am wanted. That takes me onto the final matches, and something I make the players aware of, of course they play for themselves, thats natural, and I manage because I love it and enjoy it, I have one sole purpose now this season and I want the players to work towards that same focus, the people above, some the players wont even know by name, we stay up for them, we battle every minute for them, they have backed me and they have backed the players, now we owe you the supporters and them big time. LANCASTER CITY HISTORY EARLY YEARS - 1911 to 1930 The Club was born out of meetings at the Market Hall Tea Rooms, Lancaster on 9th May 1911 and 7th July 1911.

There had been a lot of local support for having another representative side in the Lancashire Combination since the demise of the previous Lancaster FC in 1910, the main driving force being Mr John McGregor.
A steady improvement over the following three seasons saw the Club finish in second place in 1914/5, the final season before the Great War, and in that same season record a club record in the FA Cup when defeating Appleby 17-2.
The Club’s application to join the Lancashire Combination was accepted at a Combination meeting on 1st June 1911 and they were notified that they would be one of 16 teams playing in the Second Division of the Combination in 1911/12.
There was no further competitive football until 1919 but on the resumption Lancaster finished second in 1919-20 season and fifth the following season in the Lancashire Combination, there now only being one Division.
The Club’s opening fixture was a 2-0 victory against Great Harwood on the 2nd September 1911 at Quay Meadow, Lancaster, unfortunately this one of only four victories in the season and Lancaster finished bottom of the Division in 16th place with the following re-

Lancaster City History Town did take advantage of the absence of the clubs who had been elected to the league by winning the Lancashire Combination for the first time in 1921-22, and then again in 1929-30. The club also had a great FA Cup run in 1921-22 that saw the Blues knock out Third Division clubs Stockport and Barrow. 1931 to 1940 In the 1930’s, Town won two more Combination titles and managed to attract regular crowds of around 3,000, equal to many league clubs at that time and during the next decade the club had more successes as it added back-toback Championships in 1934-5 and 1935-6 and won the Lancashire Challenge Trophy in 1930-1 and 1933-4.

In 1976-77 City achieved their highest Northern Premier League finish of seventh and in 1979-80 City were the League Challenge Cup runners-up when loosing 2-0 to Runcorn at Manchester City’s Maine Road Stadium. In 1982 the Clubs fortunes nose-dived when City, finishing in 17th position (three places above their local rivals Morecambe) asked to drop down to the North West Counties League for the following season due to financial difficulties. There ensued five seasons in the North West Counties League, the final two in Division 2 after being relegated in 1984-5. The formation of the Northern Premier League First Division in 1987 propelled the club back to a higher level as founder members but success eluded City until 1994-95 when the club won the President’s League Cup, a feat they duplicated the following season.
The comeback was completed by also winning promotion in 1995-96 and thus doing the ‘double’ in what was now the Unibond League and during the same period the club opened its new social club, the Dolly Blue Tavern. Now in the Unibond Premier League City consolidated a mid-table position and completed the decade with a sixth position in the League and victory in the NPL Challenge Cup against Worksop Town. 2001 to PRESENT The new decade started where the last one finished, regaining the NPL Challenge Cup and recording our highest League position so far of fourth and this feat was bettered in 2001-2 when a third spot was achieved. In 2003-4 the Club once again reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing out by the only goal of the game at Milton Keynes and at the end of that season City were among 15 clubs from the

Lancaster City History Premier Division admitted to the newly formed Nationwide Football Conference North Division. By the 2006-07 season the club was once again in financial difficulties and a shareholders committee was formed to run the affairs of the club. In order to survive it was decided to put the Club into Administration and although the Club finished bottom of the League with only one point, anyone who followed the Club at this difficult time would know how much the present set up owes to all involved, both on and off the pitch, in keeping the Club going. The Club reformed as Lancaster City FC Ltd and continued in the 2007-8 season after dropping two levels to the Unibond League First Division North where they finished in mid-table. The following year the Dolly Blues improved and were just three points short of that fifth
and final play-off position and in 2009-10 a further improvement was made, in what was to be the last season of a 17 year Unibond League Sponsorship, with a second place finish that saw the Club in the play-offs. Having reached the play-off Final against Colwyn Bay, who had finished 21 points behind them in the League, City had the heartbreak of being beaten by the only goal of the game, a penalty 2 minutes from the end. The Club did win a Trophy with the League Fair Play Award but that was a scant reward for their efforts. Witton Albion clawed themselves back from two goals down to deny Harrogate Railway moving out of the bottom two at Station View on Monday night. Nathan Curtis’ first goal for the club gave Railway a 28th minute lead before Dan Thirkell converted a corner two minutes into the second half to put the hosts in a commanding position. Albion halved the deficit within seconds however, as Joe Newton beat Chandler Hallwood at his near post, and saw their pressure rewarded when Rob Hopley nodded in a free kick off the upright. Lee Ashforth made three changes from Saturday’s 4-2 loss at Prescot Cables, replacing Luca Mellor, Charlie Clamp and Tom Owen with Alex Low, Will Peers and stoppage time scorer Dan Barrett. Railway’s Captain Thirkell was then desperately unlucky not to give his side the lead as the midfielder’s wellhit volley was deflected just wide of the post. It was then the turn of Witton to threaten as Hopley was sent one on one with Hallwood, who made a crucial save to deny the frontman with his feet. Curtis was next to have a sight of goal, capitalising on a defensive slip to claim possession in an advanced position and force Owen Evans into tipping round his near post.
Evans was needed again soon after to catch Thirkell’s goal-ward header, but there was nothing the stopper could do to keep Curtis off the score-sheet in the 28th minute. Chris Ovington bent a free kick into the six yard box that the former Bradford City man climbed highest to direct into the net to claim his first Railway goal. Curtis’ strike partner Barrett was next to combine with Ovington as the two exchanged passes before Barrett rasped a shot inches wide of the post. Despite Railway’s dominance, Albion still posed a threat and needed Hallwood to pull off another fine save at his near post to deny first half substitute Darhyl Mason levelling things up.
