LEE’S VIEW Welcome back to Station View
A warm welcome to Lancaster today, we hope they have an enjoyable stay and a good afternoon,
in the end we hung on for a point and showed the resolve that will be needed to keep us in the division.
Lancaster currently sit 9th in the table but are only 2 points from the last play off place so well within a chance of securing that spot after a poor start by their standards.
It was great for Nathan Curtis to get his first goal and I am sure he will now kick on, he has played superbly since we signed him and I was delighted when he scored.
Lancaster have a superb ground and I always enjoy going there, its a real non league ground and they have some vocal supporters usually and its always a welcoming place.
The deadline day is fast looming upon us and it will get to the stage where we finish the season with the squad we have, I think we are close to that now, we will need to try to extend both Chandler Hallwood and Amar Purwell loan deals but hopefully they will be both with us now until the end of the season, its an exciting run in and one that we are looking forward to.
We played Prescott last Saturday and were very disappointed to come away with nothing but after a poor first half show by ourselves we made it difficult, we won the second half but never really looked like getting back into the match.

Hopley Header Stops Rail Taking Three Points Witton Albion clawed themselves back from two goals down to deny Harrogate Railway moving out of the bottom two at Station View last Monday night.
The visitors eventually claimed an equaliser in the 76th minute when Hopley headed a set piece in off the post. Three minutes later and Railway had the tireless Will Peers to thank for keeping the game level as the central midfielder made a crucial block on the goal line.
Dan Barrett picked up where he left off at Prescot Cables, edging Lawrance Hunter’s dangerous delivery onto the cross-bar within the first two minutes.
Railway had an opportunity to claim all three points themselves in the 89th minute when Barrett flicked the ball to Curtis bearing down on goal, though the striker’s pull back towards Charlie Clamp was too heavy and the chance disappeared.
It was then the turn of Witton to threaten as Rob Hopley was sent one on one with Chandler Hallwood, who made a crucial save to deny the frontman with his feet. Railway took the lead in the 28th minute when Chris Ovington bent a free kick into the six yard box that Nathan Curtis headed home for his first Railway goal. The hosts doubled their advantage just after the break when Hunter produced a trademark inviting delivery that took a deflection before being met by the head of Dan Thirkell and flying past the ‘keeper. Railway’s joy was short lived though, as almost from kick off, Joe Newton was located in the area and powered a low drive past Hallwood at his near post. Witton bombarded the Rail box with aerial balls but couldn’t find a way through as Hunter was well placed to head off the line in the 69th minute.

Deadly Doran Delivers Maximum Points for Prescot Four Rob Doran goals in 19 minutes helped Prescot Cables overcome strikes from Chris Ovington and Dan Barrett and record a 4-2 win over ten-man Harrogate Railway.
when, after a free kick was pumped into the box, Rob Youhill cleverly found Ovington whose near post shot was fumbled into the side of his own net by Marcus Burgess.
Cables took the lead after 20 minutes in when James Edgar rattled the bar from long range, allowing Doran to collect the rebound and drive the ball through bodies into the net.
With five minutes until the half time whistle, Hallwood again saved from Edgar, but this time Doran was first to react to the loose ball and volleyed home to make it 4-1.
The striker wasted no time in claiming his 20th goal of the season two minutes later when he confidently headed a left wing cross into the corner.
The afternoon took another bad turn for Lee Ashforth’s men in the second half when Harry Coates was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity when bringing down the through-on-goal Lloyd Dean.
Tom Owen had a powerful shot blocked just seconds after Railway went two behind, but it was soon three nil as Doran completed his eleven minute hat-trick.
Railway reacted positively to going a man down though, as Alex Low smashed the crossbar with a sweetly struck half volley from the edge of the box.
The third was almost a carbon copy of the striker’s second as Doran got enough power on his header from another left sided cross to beat Chandler Hallwood from close range.
Deep into second half stoppage time substitute Dan Barrett’s efforts were rewarded when the striker ran clean through on goal and coolly rolled the ball to the ‘keeper’s left.

WHO ARE LANCASTER CITY? EARLY YEARS - 1911 to 1930 The Club was born out of meetings at the Market Hall Tea Rooms, Lancaster on 9th May 1911 and 7th July 1911. There had been a lot of local support for having another representative side in the Lancashire Combination since the demise of the previous Lancaster FC in 1910, the main driving force being Mr John McGregor. The Club’s application to join the Lancashire Combination was accepted at a Combination meeting on 1st June 1911 and they were notified that they would be one of 16 teams playing in the Second Division of the Combination in 1911/12. The Club’s opening fixture was a 2-0 victory against Great Harwood on the 2nd September 1911 at Quay Meadow, Lancaster, unfortunately this one of only four victories in the season and Lancaster finished bottom of the Division in 16th place with the following record:P - 30, W - 4, D - 4, L - 22, Goals for 29, Goals against 123 & Pts 12. A steady improvement over the following three seasons saw the Club finish in second place in 1914/5, the final season before the Great War, and in that same season record a club record in the FA Cup when defeating Appleby 17-2. There was no further competitive football until 1919 but on the resumption Lancaster finished second in 1919-20 season and fifth the following season in the Lancashire Combination, there now only being one Division. It was at this point that the club’s ambitions suffered a massive setback when they were refused admission to the new Third Division (North) of the Football League, had the club entered the league their standing today may have been very different. Town did take advantage of the absence of the clubs who had been elected to the league by winning the Lancashire Combination for the first time in 1921-22, and then again in 1929-30. The club also had a great FA Cup run in 1921-22
that saw the Blues knock out Third Division clubs Stockport and Barrow. 1931 to 1940 In the 1930’s, Town won two more Combination titles and managed to attract regular crowds of around 3,000, equal to many league clubs at that time and during the next decade the club had more successes as it added back-to-back Championships in 1934-5 and 1935-6 and won the Lancashire Challenge Trophy in 1930-1 and 1933-4. The town of Lancaster was given its City Charter in 1937, one of the cities to be granted the charter as part of King George V1’s coronation celebrations and the club was appropriately renamed Lancaster City, but this new status never brought any luck with it as City have failed to win the League title since.
1941 to 1960 After the Second World War ended in 1945, City enjoyed some tremendous support with gates reaching 4,500 but failed to build on it although they did reach the FA Cup 2nd round in 1946-7 and were Combination Runners-Up and Lancashire Junior Cup Winners in 1951-2. 1961 to 2000 Since the 1960s Non-League football has always been in something of a state of flux, new leagues and divisions being created on a fairly regular basis. This restructuring saw City playing teams from a much wider geographical area than previously due to their presence from 1970-71 in the Northern Premier League. In 1972-3 City reached the FA Cup 2nd Round Proper but lost out by the odd goal against Notts County. In 1976-77 City achieved their highest Northern Premier League finish of seventh and in 1979-80 Continued Page 17

City were the League Challenge Cup runners-up when loosing 2-0 to Runcorn at Manchester City’s Maine Road Stadium. In 1982 the Clubs fortunes nose-dived when City, finishing in 17th position (three places above their local rivals Morecambe) asked to drop down to the North West Counties League for the following season due to financial difficulties. There ensued five seasons in the North West Counties League, the final two in Division 2 after being relegated in 1984-5. The formation of the Northern Premier League First Division in 1987 propelled the club back to a higher level as founder members but success eluded City until 1994-95 when the club won the President’s League Cup, a feat they duplicated the following season. The comeback was completed by also winning promotion in 1995-96 and thus doing the ‘double’ in what was now the Unibond League and during the same period the club opened its new social club, the Dolly Blue Tavern. Now in the Unibond Premier League City consolidated a mid-table position and completed the decade with a sixth position in the League and victory in the NPL Challenge Cup against Worksop Town. 2001 to PRESENT The new decade started where the last one finished, regaining the NPL Challenge Cup and recording our highest League position so far of fourth and this feat was bettered in 2001-2 when a third spot was achieved. In 2003-4 the Club once again reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing out by the only goal of the game at Milton Keynes and at the end of that season City were among 15 clubs from the Premier Division admitted to the newly formed Nationwide Football Conference North Division. By the 2006-07 season the club was once again in financial difficulties and a shareholders commit-
tee was formed to run the affairs of the club. In order to survive it was decided to put the Club into Administration and although the Club finished bottom of the League with only one point, anyone who followed the Club at this difficult time would know how much the present set up owes to all involved, both on and off the pitch, in keeping the Club going. The Club reformed as Lancaster City FC Ltd and continued in the 2007-8 season after dropping two levels to the Unibond League First Division North where they finished in mid-table. The following year the Dolly Blues improved and were just three points short of that fifth and final play-off position and in 2009-10 a further improvement was made, in what was to be the last season of a 17 year Unibond League Sponsorship, with a second place finish that saw the Club in the play-offs. Having reached the play-off Final against Colwyn Bay, who had finished 21 points behind them in the League, City had the heartbreak of being beaten by the only goal of the game, a penalty 2 minutes from the end. The Club did win a Trophy with the League Fair Play Award but that was a scant reward for their efforts. In 2010-11 City ended in 8th place but did win the President’s Cup, defeating four sides from the top five, and retained the League Fair Play Award as well as winning the prestigious FA National Fair Play and Respect Award, representing clubs from Tiers 1 to 4. The club retained the League’s Fair Play award in 2011-2 but finished 3 points off the play offs and whilst the play-offs were tantalisingly close in Darren Peacock’s first season as manager in 2013-4, failing on goal difference, the addition of ex-England player Trevor Sinclair as coach didn’t achieve the success the Club so desperately craved and the managerial roundabout now sees Phil Brown, an old Club stalwart, in charge and in the process of a re-building programme.

JACOB DAVIS: Born June’ 94 in Lancaster. The central defender signed for City during the 201314 season from local side Caton United. Jacob has become a first team regular and proved to be a good addition to the squad.
BILLY AKRIGG: Born Dec’ 92 in Lancaster. The wide midfield player signed from local side Slyne with Hest, after having a year with Kendal Town. Billy has a good engine and never stops running at defences. Billy is one of the first players named in the starting line-up.
ADAM FREELAND: Born Oct 92 in Blackpool. The central defender joined in Nov 14 from Clitheroe but was injured in his first Reserve game. Having recovered he is quickly becoming a permanent fixture in the starting line-up. Adam played for Kendal Town but started his career at AFC Blackpool and was Lancashire U18’s captain in 2010/11 when winning the KEY national cup.

DANNY CARLTON: Born Dec’ 83 in Leeds. Danny started his career with Morecambe before joining Carlisle United, he returned to Morecambe a year later for a loan spell. He then went on loan to Darlington before joining Bury on a permanent deal. He then had a loan spell at Grimsby Town and Morecambe again before completing a permanent move back to the club. He joined Hyde and retired after finishing his career with a loan spell at Chester. Danny returned to football signing for Lancaster in August 2015. CRAIG CARNEY: Born Jan’ 93 Craig is in his second spell at the Dolly Blues, under Phil Brown. He then had spells at Bamber Bridge, Northwich Victoria and Squires Gate before being released, while team captain, at Kendal Town. Phil Brown had no hesitation in snapping-up this highly able midfielder.

ROB HENRY: Returned to Lancaster City in October 2015 having served a season with Kendal Town. Rob is a capable end highly experienced defender who is bringing that experience to bear throughout the club.
BEN HUDSON: Born Dec’ 92 in Blackpool. This likeable and competent right sided defender made his debut in Sept’ 2012 after joining from AFC Fylde. Previous clubs include Bradford City and Preston North End. ABOUBACAR JUNIOR KABA: Born Jan’ 96 in Belgium, ‘Junior’ has previously played for Belgian sides SC Eendracht Aalst, FC Brussels and he joined City from FCV Dender EH. Bringing a wealth of experience from the Belgian league sides he is a useful ‘utility’ player. TOM KILIFIN: Returning to City, after a brief spell at Kendal Town, this local lad is a popular striker who continues to lead the attack with flair and an eye for goal beyond his years. ANTONIO LAFUENTE: Born Dec ’92 in Madrid, Antonio joined the Dolly Blues from CD Canillas for our pre-season matches, where he quickly became a fan’s favourite with his fast attacking play scoring in all the matches he played. NEIL MARSHALL – Club Captain: ‘El Capitano’ was born Dec’ 84 in Lancaster. The strong central defender is the longest serving player at the club in his tenth consecutive season, having made over 400 appearances for the Dolly Blues. This local hero is club and team captain and an inspiration to the team. Neil has made appearances in the Conference and Northern Premier League since joining from local side Marsh United. Neil writes a regular column in the local press. RICKY MERCER: An experienced defender Ricky re-joined Lancaster City, from Nelson FC in October 2015. Having played for Kendal Town, Fleetwood Town, Northwich Victoria and AFC Fylde, Ricky brings all that experience, skill and commitment into every match he plays. BARNEY MORRIS: Born October ’96, Barney signed from Squires Gate FC in October 2015,
Barney was one of the first signings of the new ‘Phil Brown Era’. Despite his youth he is proving to be a valuable asset to the squad and is already showing a well-developed footballing intelligence beyond his years. MATTY POOLE: Born Oct’ 90 in Lancaster. The forward came through our Youth system and first made his debut in Aug 2010. Matty was signed in December 2014 and has quickly justified the description as being a ‘prolific scorer’. DAVE RODGERSON: Born May 85. ‘Rodge’ is a highly experienced ‘keeper joined Phil Brown’s management team as goalkeeping coach and squad keeper. DANNY SHEARWOOD: Born Oct ’98. Joining the Dolly Blues from Squires Gate in December 2015, Danny has quickly proved to be a ‘match-changer’ when coming on from the bench. JAMIE STREET: Jamie started his football career in Perth, Australia, where his parents still live. Jamie played for teams in Australia before moving to Stockport Sports and eventually on to Workington before signing for City in August 2015. Jamie is proving to be a valuable utility player. HANNU TAM: Hannu joined Lancaster City from the North Lancs Development Centre and was an outstanding striker during the pre-season fixtures. Despite his young age Hannu is proving to be more than capable. The skill and speed he brings to the forward line is sure to bring him ongoing success. TOM WATSON: Born Dec’ 85 Tom brings a ‘no nonsense’ approach to the defensive midfield. Joining Lancaster City from Kendal Town Tom has quickly used his experience to help the midfield to become more effective. GEORGE WEST: Born March ’96 George joined the Dolly Blues from Stockport County FC in November 2015, having previously played for Hyde United FC. RYAN WINDER: Born Dec’ 93 in Lancaster. This midfielder signed from local side Slyne with Hest in the summer of 2012. Having made his debut in Oct 2012 Ryan has rarely been absent from the starting team. First Team Experience Key for Hallwood Chandler Hallwood has made a big impression since joining Harrogate Railway on loan from Bradford City on the 19th February. The 18-year-old stopper has looked assured beyond his years behind Railway’s defence and was the hero at 2nd placed Northwich Victoria in just his third start for the club, keeping out a 92nd minute penalty to earn a vital point. Hallwood already has experience of Evo-Stik football having appeared for both Scarborough Athletic and Brighouse Town this season, and is hoping for more high points that can only be experienced in men’s football during his time at Station View, but is equally as keen to learn from any setbacks. He said: “Getting experience of playing men’s football is the aim; it’s a lot different to playing youth team and reserve team football at Bradford. “It was an absolutely unbelievable feeling to save it in the 92nd minute, a great feeling! “Letting in seven against Warrington obviously wasn’t the best, but I hope to learn from it, I learnt a lot of things from that match. “Being on loan at Scarborough and Brighouse helped massively and you

can tell there is a big difference at that level of football.” Hallwood is not the only youngster to have made the move from Valley Parade to Station View last month, with Luca Mellor and Daniel Devine also joining up with Lee Ashforth’s talented squad. But It is former Bradford City striker Nathan Curtis who Chandler has looked to for inspiration of achieving his goal of breaking into the Bradford City first team. He said: “It’s much easier fitting into a team when you already know the players. “I knew a few of them before I came like Jack Stockdill and Nathan Curtis from Bradford City so it’s good to fit back in with them as well. “I’ll hopefully get into the Bradford team in the next three or four years and be starting within the next couple of years after that. “I don’t expect to be first choice straight away, but even sitting on the bench would be really good experience. “Nathan Curtis broke in to the first team when he was 16 which was great for him, and that shows there is hope for us all.” If Hallwood can carry on producing fine displays between the sticks for Harrogate Railway, starting this afternoon against Lancaster City, the young ‘keeper may get his chance in league football sooner rather than later.

Points From the Past DURUNG the first part of the 1984-85 season we had three cup runs involving several replays which meant that by Christmas we were unbeaten in the league but had only played six matches. We were in the Northern Counties League Division One North and, with no floodlights, we were restricted to Saturdays once the clocks had gone back. A run in the FA Vase started with wins over Worsborough Bridge and Immingham Town and then there were two ties each going to two games. We drew 2-2 at Sheffield before coming out 5-0 winners in the replay here at Station View. We then travelled to Brandon United and drew a very entertaining game 4-4 but sadly lost 2-0 here in the replay. In the West Riding County Cup, after despatching Hatfield Main, the tie involving Garforth Miners went to two games, the first having to be abandoned part-way through, and there were also two ties in the League Cup against Farsley Celtic and Collingham, both of which we won 2-1. So, Boxing Day came around and a juicy-looking home derby with Harrogate Town, who had not been so successful in cup matches but their league form was very impressive with only one defeat in twelve games.
The match was eagerly awaited. Freddie Cliff was in charge here and Alan Smith was the manager at Town. The Railway squad was: Malcolm Roffe, Neil Parker, Paul Render, Martin Tetley, Paul Wiliams, Wayne Noteman, David Whyte, Peter Jackson, Mick Edwards, Cliff Spurr, Tony Canham and Tony Passmore. Town’s squad: Steve Jones, Mick Parker, Paul Williamson, John Deacey, Fergus Donaldson, Mick Swaine, John Dembickjy, Jack Smith, Dave Oakley, Mick Dawes, Mick Margis and Gary Whellans. The game was refereed by Mr R Sanderson from Leeds. A ding-dong battle ensued, two goals from Tony Cahham gave us what looked like a comfortable lead as the game drew to a close but a late effort from Gary Whellans made the last few moments somewhat tense. We held out, however, and three more points went in the bag. Freddie Cliff said in the programme: “It is hoped that our supporters are not too disappointed by the setback against Brandon United. Whlst it would have been nice to have progressed, I think the lads did everybody proud andjust got pipped by a very good side on the day.”
