Today we entertain Spennymoor and we hope that there management team and all associated people have had a safe journey down the A1 for todays game. Jason Ainsley has been excellent for me in my first season as a manager, he has supported me throughout and was really helpful in our recent signing of Nathan Curtis by waiving the seven day rule. Our five away games since my last notes were hugely contrasting, a 5-0 defeat at Witton when not only lack of games was evident but a second half performance certainly that was well below par and then after much discussion as a management team and a players meeting we went to Lancaster and were very unfortunate to come away losing 1-0. We then travelled to Farsley and I believe it was much publicised my thoughts that night, at 1-0 up we had a definite penalty turned down that would have also had their Goalkeeper sent off, fine margins, we lost 3-1. Finally last week we were away at Radcliffe, I asked the players not to concede and we drew the game 0-0 and gained an excellent point

away from home. We then travelled to Bamber with a depleted team and we lost heavily 5-0 and we did not play as well as we had in previous games. With 14 points now we must aim to clear ourselves from the bottom two and work towards 35 points that I believe would keep us safe. We brought back Harry Coates from Harrogate Town and he was superb last year and I have tried several times this season to re-sign him and at last we managed to have him back in our ranks. He has been a big player when we had him and has been a leader on the pitch to add to the ones we already have. He has played in all four of the games and last week turned down an approach from Scarborough before being recalled prior to the Bamber game. He has now been recalled by Harrogate Town as they have some injuries in defensive areas, I hope Harry takes the opportunity and nails down a first team position, if he doesnâ€™t we

Lee’s View would of course gladly have his services again.

However, I cannot keep using this excuse so the remainder of the season is important for us as a club, if we have a successful run in we will have moved away from the relegation zone and we will be able to enjoy the summer and plan for next season.

We are now just over halfway through our season and it has been a time for reflection and to see if we replicate what we have done so far will we be enough to keep Harrogate Railway in the league, I would be a poor manager if I did not think that this was the case.

I believe this will be the case. I have added Nathan Curtis this week, after hearing he was available it was without doubt a good opportunity for us and we now have a proven striker at this level.

I want to be a manager that keeps a settled team and a small group of players that we can work with throughout the year but we have had to have a rebuilding year and that was always going to mean that we changed the personal quite a lot as the season went on.

I also added George Foster from Pickering, it is a step up for George and one that he wants to grab with both hands especially with the suspension of Simon Parkes over the next three games.

I have done this to improve the squad and the team and give us the best chance of not only being in this league next season but making us competitive

Finally we added Luca Mellor from Bradford City and this youngster will again be invaluable to us as long as we can have him.

In the first squad of the season we had seven out of 16 remaining from last season so realistically we knew it was going to be hard.

Finally, I would like to welcome Rob Northfield back to the football club, I was not around in his last stint involved but after having discussions with him and meeting him, the passion he shows to help us in many different ways was highly evident and his enthusiasm is infectious.

Against Lancaster only four players remain from last season, Laurance Hunter, Dan Thirkell, Steve Bromley and Tom Goodwin. Also Simon Parkes although he didnt play at all last year.

It’s not all about money, of course he is wealthy and this has been publicised, what isn’t often realised is how he earned that wealth and thats by being exceptional at making people think and work positively, thats where I believe his efforts will help me the most.

Only seven players were involved on against Lancaster that were involved in our opening match against Droylsden. Enough of the stats, my point is that we have rebuilt this team and I am now putting my head on the block and have done in the press by saying I believe we are almost there, we have a squad capable of competing at this level and if we had this squad at the start of the season I believe we would be sat comfortably away from the relegation zone.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Three Players Make Their Debut as Railway Fall to Glossop Defeat

Harrogate Railway suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of third placed Glossop North End on Saturday afternoon, but will feel aggrieved their performance didn’t get something from the game.

from a couple of yards after Goodwin had parried Rainford’s low shot. Another four minutes passed before Chris Willcock’s men added a fourth when Mulholland sent a fairly weak strike goal wards that left Railway players flatfooted and rolled into the far corner.

Lee Ashforth made seven changes from his side’s last run out and handed Harrogate Railway debuts to George Foster, Luca Mellor and Nathan Curtis.

With the result beyond doubt, Ashforth’s men were playing for pride and got themselves a deserved goal with five minutes to go when substitutes Will Peers and Dan Barrett combined, allowing the latter to expertly round Luke Pilling and score.

The first big chance of the game fell to Astley Mulholland who had been sent through on goal after a rapid Glossop counter attack, though the winger got his finish all wrong and sent the ball harmlessly over.

The afternoon’s scoring didn’t end there though, as three minutes later, some patient build up play from Glossop allowed Mulholland freedom at the back post to tap in his second of the game.

With 20 minutes gone, Railway had arguably been the better side with both Lawrance Hunter and Dan Thirkell, making his 30th start of the season, having good shots blocked. It was The Hillmen, however, that opened the scor-

ing when a long free kick into the box was headed up rather than out and dropped onto the head of 20goal striker Jamie Rainford who guided his header past Tom Goodwin into the opposite corner. The contest’s defining moment came in the 68th minute when, while making a desperate attempt to deny a shot at an open goal, Charlie Clamp caught the Glossop man in possession and conceded a spot-kick. Home Captain David Young made no mistake from 12 yards as he struck the kick low and hard down the middle. Railway barely had time to come to terms with being two behind as Glossop added another through substitute Benjamin Richardson who tapped in

WHO ARE SPENNYMOOR TOWN? Spennymoor United had a lot of success over the years. Most notable was their success in the 1977-1978 season, where they reached the Semi-Final of the FA Trophy, where they lost to Leatherhead 2-0 away in the 1st leg and won 2-1 at home in the 2nd Leg, losing 3-2 on aggregate. That year, Spennymoor United also won the Northern League for the fifth time in the space of 10 years. The following year, Spennymoor only reached the 2nd Round of The FA Trophy. During the 1990-1991 season, Spennymoor joined the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and in the 1992-1993 season were champions, only on goal difference. The following season, they were runners up of the Northern Premier League Division One and were promoted to the Premier Division. However, in the turn of the new millennium, with financial troubles resulting in losing 35 out of their 44 fixtures, they were relegated for the first time in their history. In the 2002-2003 season, they were promoted back to the Premier Division as runners up after losing the title on goal difference. The following season, the clubhouse was burnt down on Christmas Day 2003 from an arson attack and the club had lost their main source of income. Things only went from bad to worse from then on. In the 2004-2005 season, they were deducted 24 points after failing to fulfil the fixture list due to not being able to field a side. During that season, manager Graeme Clarke resigned after losing 5-1 to Gateshead on 25 March 2005 (Good Friday), followed soon by Secretary Thomas Metcalfe for supposed health reasons. The club resigned from the league after 33 games that season and later folded, which caused controversy over the unfulfilled fixtures. Spennymoor United was reborn under the name of Spennymoor Town, after a merger with Evenwood, who were on the verge of folding in the same year. Out of the gloom, people were working hard and managed to get the club together for the start of 2005–06. Headed by Alan Murray the fans rallied round and formed an independent supporters group, initially with the aim of running the club themselves. Both groups submitted their bids with the local council, but

after a meeting held at the Penny Gill pub in Spennymoor, it was agreed to stand down and let Alan Murray’s plan go ahead. The application proceeded with the name change to Spennymoor Town, the club were accepted into the Northern League Division Two. On Saturday 13 August 2005, the first league game as Spennymoor Town was to be played at home against Darlington R.A, which was met with a major attraction from the town. The official attendance for that first game was 511 people, in which the newly formed Spennymoor Town were victorious with a 3-2 win. The following Tuesday, The Moors carried on their winning ways, beating Guisborough 3-1. In the first four home games under the new name, one of those including The F.A Cup Preliminary Round, the club attracted over 1300 people to The Brewery Field. In their first season, the club got off to a good start under then manager Ken Houlahan. In January 2006, Houlahan left his post as manager to become Director of Football and Justin Perry was appointed Player-Manager, finishing the season in a respectable 8th position. But things behind the scenes were not good, a rift between the club and the fans grew, as did the rift between the committee and the chairman. Business man Alan Murray was replaced as Chairman in his absence during a board meeting. During the summer of 2006 the situation came to a head and resulted in the entire committee resigning their posts, taking all but four players with them. The club was taken over by Chairman Alan Murray, with Alan Courtney returning as Vice Chairman. The club also tried to change its name back to Spennymoor United before the 2006–07 season. However, the FA rejected the proposal. In June 2006, a management team of Jamie Pollock and Moors favourite Jason Ainsley was put in place. Together they put together a strong squad of players. After a slow start, consisting of 6 away games out of the first seven, and a high number of draws, the squad went from strength to strength. port of over 150 fans, if they won and Seaham lost, they would be champions. At half time, the news came through that Seaham were losing 3–1. Spennymoor’s place was booked as champions when Tom Jones netted an 87th-minute winner. During the summer of 2007, then Manager Jamie Pollock left the club, stating “he wanted to concentrate on getting his coaching badges and pursue his career at a higher level” and moors favourite Jason Ainsley was swiftly given the position of first team manager. Yet another crisis hit the club during this summer when the council evicted the club from its home of 103 years. However, after a lot of good work by individuals of the football club, in particular the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary Jonathan Le Poidevin, a new 25-year lease was agreed on 25 September 2007, securing the future of the club. Spennymoor’s first season back in the 1st Division of the Northern League resulted in them finishing in a mid table position. They also had a few memorable cup games, defeating higher league opposition in Garforth Town and Brigg Town. They narrowly missed out on a Durham Challenge Cup final appearance against Sunderland, losing the semi-final to a 120th-minute winner 1–0 at Gateshead. In the 2008-09 season, the club finished 4th in the league on goal difference below Newcastle Benfield, Consett and Whitley Bay. The 2009–10 season was a huge success, with the arrival of former Aston Villa player Bradley Groves as Club Chairman with former England, Newcastle and West Ham United Striker Paul Kitson as President. This led to Spennymoor being crowned Northern Football League Division One Champions with 100 points, at the time being only the third team to ever do so and a feat that was surpassed the season after by winning the league with 103 points. Despite winning the league in three consecutive seasons (2009–10, 2010–11, 2011–12), the club did not apply for promotion as they wanted to be financially stable before they took the next step up. Although an application for promotion was subsequently made after their runners-up position in 2012-13 to Darlington 1883 (again breaking the 100 point mark), the club was not deemed by the FA worthy enough of an offer of promotion. At the beginning of the season, then Assistant Manager Brian Atkinson joined Martin Gray at

Darlington 1883 and Gavin Fell took the position of Assistant Manager. Gav helped Whitley Bay towards 3 consecutive FA Vase victories and also spent a year at Blyth Spartans before joining the Moors. Also in this season, Spennymoor reached the final of the FA Vase for the first time and beat Tunbridge Wells F.C. 2-1 in front of 16,000 people, followed by a victory parade around the town the following Monday. Along with the cup runs and the loss of winter games due to the bad weather, the season was eventually extended into the middle of May as the club played over 80 games if pre season friendlies are included. In the 2013-2014 season, Spennymoor Town started off retaining the JR Cleator Cup, as the league champions Darlington declined the invitation to compete. Spennymoor also made their 3rd consecutive appearance in the Durham Challenge Cup final and ultimately lost 2-1 against a strong Shildon side thanks to a last minute Shildon goal. This year Spennymoor won the league for the 4th time in 5 years, beating strong promotion rivals Celtic Nation F.C. by 5 points and finishing the season unbeaten at home in league matches. The club had applied for promotion into the pyramid during the 2013-2014 season and played their first competitive game outside of the Northern League away to Padiham F.C. on 16 August 2014, winning 2-0. Spennymoor also had a good run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round, beating Tadcaster Albion A.F.C., Bishop Auckland F.C., Dunston UTS F.C. and Ashton United F.C. and finally losing in a replay against AFC Telford United. In the first match, Spennymoor were winning 2-0 by the 90th minute, but Telford scored two goals in injury time to secure the replay. In the replay, Spennymoor were beaten 3-0 to secure Telford’s place in the 1st Round against Basingstoke Town F.C. On 23 December 2014, then Assistant Manager Gavin Fell left his post after 2 and a half years with the club and was replaced by ex Gateshead and West Auckland manager Anthony Smith. Spennymoor finished their first season in the NPL Division One North in 5th place on 77 points and but lost 3-2 against Darlington 1883 in the play off Semi-Final.

Jason Ainsley (First Team Manager) - Long Serving Manager now in his 10th season in charge at The Brewery Field. Jason is Mr Spennymoor as his association with the club spreads well over 20 years as a former player, skipper and Assistant Manager. The gaffer has won 12 trophies since 2006 and led the team to the play offs last season. Played for Hartlepool United, Barrow, Gateshead, Blyth Spartans in his playing career and had spells in Singapore and Australia.

Christopher Mason (Defender) - Club Captain in his 7th season and has now completed over 250 appearances for the club. Former England Schoolboy Mason leads by example and rated by many as the best defender in the Northern League. Carl Beasley (Interim Assistant Manager) – Former first team captain and Reserve Team Manager. Appointed to the role on an Interim basis in February 2016. Glen McCartney (First Team Coach) - Hugely popular and valuable member of the backroom staff now entering his 4th season at the club. Belfast born Glen also doubles up at the clubs Chief Scout where he’s employed by Newcastle United. Barry Farr (Goalkeeper Coach) - Barry returned to the club in March 2015 following a short spell with West Auckland Town. The former Northern League goalkeeper and Durham City coach became very popular in his previous five seasons at the club ensuring the Moors keepers were prepared in the best possible way for every game.

Stephen Capper (Defender) - Another player starting his 7th season at the club, Stephen is easily the clubs most decorated player after captaining the Republic of Ireland at the Olympics and the World Youth Championships where he competed against Christiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres. Dublin born Capper spent five years at Sunderland before dropping into non-league with Scarborough and Durham City where he won two league championships.

Mark was a professional with Fort Lauderdale Strikers scoring 19 goals in 65 appearances, and last season was with Carolina Railhawks. Joined Spennymoor in January 2016. Craig Gott (Midfielder) – 26 year old midfielder who joined from Northern League Champions Marske United in January 2016 where he was captain. Craig started his career with Mid-

dlesbrough and Hartlepool United before joining The Moors for the first time in the summer of 2008. He moved on to various clubs including Darlington 1883 before joining Marske in 2013 and had scored 45 goals during his two and a half years with the Seasiders, before re-joining the Moors for an undisclosed fee. Reece Kenney (Midfielder) - Signed on Contract in the close season after progressing up through the clubs reserve team where he was captain last season. John McReady (Midfielder) - Signed from Halifax Town in the summer of 2014. John started out at Darlington and after impressing for the Quakers he sealed a move to York City in the Football League. A tricky player who loves nothing better than running at the opposition. Liam Henderson (Striker) - Now in his 3rd season with the club following his release from Conference club Gateshead. Liam has scored 66 goals in the last two seasons, and spent seven years as a professional with Watford, Hartlepool United, Colchester United, Rotherham United, Forest Green Rovers, Aldershot Town, York City and hometown club Gateshead. Gavin Cogdon (Striker) - Gavin holds the mantle of being the clubs all-time leading scorer. Joined from Durham City in 2009 and has scored over 100 goals including the opener at Wembley in the F.A.Vase. Nathan Fisher (Striker) - Yorkshire based Striker who joined the Moors in October 2014 from Darlington 1883. Nathan was previously at Gateshead in the Conference spending three seasons making 83 appearances scoring 12 goals. Has also played in the Scottish Premier League for Gretna after starting his career with Middlesbrough. Glen Taylor (Striker) - Returned to the club on a two year contract from Ashington.
