Welcome back to Station View Today we entertain Burscough and we hope that there management team and all associated people have had a safe journey over the M62 for todays game. Burscough have had a fantastic season so far and are currently placed just one place outside the play offs and after a good cup run thrown in they are having a highly successful season. I am sure they will have ambitions to finish in the play offs and gain promotion so a tough test is expected today. Earlier in the season we lost 3-2 after leading with 7 minutes remaining. I remember the game well and how we felt afterwards, our aim will be to put in a good performance today and take some much needed points. Our four away games since my last notes were hugely contrasting, a 5-0 defeat at Witton when not only lack of games was evident but a second half performance certainly that was well below par and then after much discussion as a management team and a players meeting we went to Lancaster and were very unfortunate to come away losing 1-0. We then travelled to Farsley and I believe it was much publicised my thoughts that night, at 1-0 up we had a definite penalty turned down that would have also had their Goalkeeper sent off, fine margins, we lost 3-1. Finally last week we were away at Radcliffe, I asked the players not to concede and we drew the game 0-0 and gained an excellent point away from home. With 14 points now we must aim to clear ourselves from the bottom two and work towards 35 points that I believe would keep us safe. We have brought back Harry Coates from Harrogate Town and he was superb last year and I have tried several times this season to re-sign him and at last we have him back in our ranks. He will be a big player when we have him and is a leader on the pitch to add to the ones we already have. He has played in all four of the games and last week turned down an approach from Scarborough. We are now just over halfway through our season and it has been a time for reflection and to see if we replicate what we have done so far will we be enough to keep Harrogate Railway in the league, I would be a poor manager if I did not think Lee Ashforth Manager, Harrogate Railway

Lee’s View that this was the case. I want to be a manager that keeps a settled team and a small group of players that we can work with throughout the year but we have had to have a rebuilding year and that was always going to mean that we changed the personal quite a lot as the season went on. I have done this to improve the squad and the team and give us the best chance of not only being in this league next season but making us competitive. In the first squad of the season we had 7/16 remaining from last season so realistically we knew it was going to be hard. Against Lancaster only 4 players remain from last season, Laurance Hunter, Dan Thirkell, Steve Bromley and Tom Goodwin. Also Simon Parkes although he didnt play at all last year. Only 7 players were involved on against Lancaster that were involved in our opening match against Droylsden.
season I believe we would be sat comfortably away from the relegation zone. However, I cannot keep using this excuse so the remainder of the season is important for us as a club, if we have a successful run in we will have moved away from the relegation zone and we will be able to enjoy the summer and plan for next season. I believe this will be the case. Finally, I would like to welcome Rob Northfield back to the football club, I was not around in his last stint involved but after having discussions with him and meeting him, the passion he shows to help us in many different ways was highly evident and his enthusiasm is infectious. Its not all about money, of course he is wealthy and this has been publicised, what isn’t often realised is how he earned that wealth and thats by being exceptional at making people think and work positively, thats where I believe his efforts will help me the most.
Enough of the stats, my point is that we have rebuilt this team and I am now putting my head on the block and have done in the press by saying I believe we are almost there, we have a squad capable of competing at this level and if we had this squad at the start of the

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Railway grabbed the lead on the counter attack when Dan Thirkell caught out a high Farsley back line with a lofted pass that Stephen Bromley latched onto and lifted over the goalkeeper for his sixth of the season.
The equaliser eventually came for Neil Parsley’s side in the 66th minute when Aiden Savory powered in an excellent finish high into the net from the right of the penalty area. The game certainly looked to still have goals in it and that proved to be the case as Clayton sent a rocket of a strike past Tom Stewart from just outside the area with just ten minutes left to play.
The league’s in form side were having the lion’s share of possession but couldn’t break down Railway’s defence with Alex Low making a crucial intervention to deny Lewis Nightingale space to level.
Clayton then added a second and sealed the points for the home team when he met an outswinging corner at the near post with a powerful header that nestled into the back of the net.
It was Harrogate that finished the half strongest; as Chris Ovington twice went close to doubling the visitors lead only to be denied by Tom Taylor at his near post.
The controversy didn’t stop there though, as Railway marched straight back up the other end and hit the net through Callum Robinson, only for the linesman to raise his flag and judge Tom Owen to be offside and interfering with play.
On the hour mark, a big call from referee Michael Denton denied Railway the opportunity to go two up from the spot. Thirkell had only Taylor to beat and knocked the ball past the ‘keeper before going to

When he re-joined Harrogate Railway at the turn of the year, Harry Coates became the fifth player to be dual-registered with or loaned from Harrogate Town this season. The central defender was at NPL Premier Division Matlock Town earlier in the season, but now follows in the footsteps of Nathaniel Pells, Rob Worrall, Tom Stewart and Marcus Day to turn out at Station View this season. The five have made a combined 39 appearance for The Rail in 2015/16, at the time of writing, and have made a big contribution to Lee Ashforth’s side, with Worrall’s performances earning him a trial at Blackburn Rovers. Railway’s boss has spoken frequently about his appreciation of the link between the neighbouring clubs, and latest arrival Coates is in agreement. He said: “Ash has wanted me to come back for a while now and when I came back from Matlock Town I needed some games so Railway sounded like the right place to go. “I know Ash well from my last season here and it just seemed right to come back and help him out. “It’s great for Railway to have a link like that to a good club like Harrogate Town and especially for the young lads that can come down and get some experience playing men’s football. “It’s good for Ash because he’s getting quality lads coming down and it’s good for Town because they’re getting their young lads games. “The lads here are easy to get on with, I know a lot of them from last season and I’ve settled in straight away, I’m enjoying it.” The 20-year-old was a big part of Railway’s best ever league finish last time out and formed a formidable partnership with former Leeds United man Matt Heath. The veteran defender, now at Tadcaster Albion, left a big impression on Coates, although the York City youth graduate is pleased with how things have gone alongside both Alex Low and Pells. He added: “Matt Heath was a big influence on me at Railway last year. He’s a top, top player and I used to go watch him at Leeds so I got on really well with him and built a good partnership with him. “He taught me a lot, you try and learn from the best and he’s definitely the best I’ve played with. “I’ve played with Nat at Town before in reserve games so I know Nat

really well and then with Alex I’ve slotted in really nicely with him. “We’ve been working well together and as we showed at Radcliffe we can keep a clean sheet.” January’s shutout at Radcliffe Borough was Railway’s first since early September when Mossley were overturned at Station View, and Coates admits clean sheets are a priority for his side. He said: “As a centre half if you can keep a clean sheet you have done your job. Before every game that’s our task; keep a clean sheet and you’ve always got a chance of winning. “I think we have done well and have been unlucky not to pick up a couple of wins at Farsley and Radcliffe Borough. “I’m sure with the performances we’ve been putting in these last few games we are going to click sooner or later and then the points will start coming.”

WHO ARE BURSCOUGH? The first Burscough Association Football Club was formed in 1880, playing in Liverpool & District League football before folding in 1900. In 1905 Burscough Rangers were founded and moved to the present Mart Lane ground in 1908. They established many of the traditions carried on by the current club, playing in green and known as the Linnets. In the 1920s they had tremendous success winning the Liverpool County Combination Championship three times. In 1926 Rangers purchased a grandstand from Everton and erected it on Victoria Park. The following year they joined the Lancashire Combination but never experienced the same level of success and began to run into financial difficulties, finally folding in 1935. Following the Second World War the present Burscough club was founded in 1946, starting life in the Liverpool County Combination and by the end of the decade had made a major impact in the nonleague soccer world. In only their second season, 1946/47, they achieved a unique treble, winning the
Lancashire Junior Cup, George Mahon Cup and the Liverpool Challenge Cup. Two years later they again claimed the Junior Cup and also won the County Combination title for the first time. In 1952 they won the Liverpool Challenge Cup for a second time. In 1953/54 Burscough joined the Lancashire Combination winning the Second Division Championship in their first season and scoring 155 goals in the process. 1955/56 saw arguably the club’s greatest ever achievement as they won the First Division Championship of a league containing giants of the non-league world such as Wigan Athletic. Another trophy winning spell commenced in 1966/67 season under manager Bobby Langton, the former England winger, as the club completed a hat trick of Junior Cup successes against South Liverpool at Wigan. The Lancashire Combination First Division title was regained in 1969/70 season. In 1970/71 Burscough joined the Cheshire County League, finishing runners-up to Rossendale United. The following sea-
son they won the Liverpool Non-League Senior Cup and in 1974/75 the Cheshire League Cup was lifted. The Linnets also reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper on three other occasions. In 1977, a 1 -0 defeat at Blyth Spartans, in 1979, a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United in front of 14,000 spectators and in 1980, a 2-1 defeat against Altrincham. In 1982 the Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League and had the distinction of becoming the Leagues first ever Champions under Bryan Griffiths. In 1989/90 season Burscough were to suffer their first ever relegation, however, the appointment of Russ Perkins as manager in 1991 was to bring about a change in the club’s fortunes as Burscough reached the League Cup Final and gained promotion back to Division One. In 1992/93 success was achieved by winning the League Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Nantwich Town. In May 1995, Burscough appointed John Davison as Manager. the League Challenge Cup for the second time, beating League Champions Flixton 1-0 at Bury. In 1996/97 season the club celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a dinner attended by nearly 200 former players and officials and also published a 320 page club history, ‘Green Village Heroes.’ The following season after finishing runners-up in the North West Counties League the club made history by being promoted to the Unibond League. They also won the League Floodlit Trophy and reached the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup against Liverpool. Promotion to the dizzy heights of the Unibond League Premier Division in 1999/2000 season exceeded most supporters wildest dreams as Burscough went through the season unbeaten away from home and lost only two games in total. In 2000/01 season the Linnets won the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first ever time after beating Conference side Southport. Following the resignation of John Davison the club appointed Shaun Teale as player/ manager in May 2002 and the ex-Aston Villa defender went on to sensationally lead the club to its greatest ever achievement as Burscough became the smallest club to ever win the FA Trophy following a tremendous 2-1 victory over Tamworth at Villa Park on Sunday 18th May 2003. An incredible end to 2003/04 season saw Burscough finish with a remarkable run of victories that saw them claw their way out of the bottom three into the play-offs for Conference North. Despite playing all their games away from home the Linnets went on to reach the play-off final where they only went down at Bradford Park Avenue
following extra-time. The following season ended in controversy as the Linnets were denied a play-off place following a widely ridiculed decision to award three points for unplayed games against Spennymoor United who could not complete their fixtures. Season 2005/06 was another historic one for Burscough F.C. as they went on to reach the Second Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time in their history. Derek Goulding`s tenure as manager ended in June 2006 when he was replaced by former Southport manager, Liam Watson. The 2006/07 season was Burscough F.C`s Diamond Jubilee and one of the ways the club marked the event was by playing in a predominantly white kit with a specially designed badge. The season was one of the most succesful in history when the Linnets won the Unibond Northern Premier Division and the Lancashire Co-Op Trophy, formerly the Lancashire Junior Cup, for the first time in 40 years when neighbours Marine were defeated. Further and final success came when Unibond First Division champions Buxton were defeated 3-1 in the Peter Swailes Memorial Shield to round off a great season and confirm Burscough as Treble Winners. The club continued to play in the First Division North for the 2014-2015 season under Derek Goulding until he left for Bangor City in October 2014. Mark Beesley was named Caretaker Manager till January 2015 when he was given the role of manager full time, he brought in Liam Blakeman as his assistant.

Eddie Toner (Centre-midfield) Eddie joined Burscough FC from Stafford Rangers in November 2013.
Calvin Hare Calvin Joined during the 2014-2015 from Droylsden FC. He also has previous experience with AFC Fylde and Wigan Athletic Academy Squad.
Matty Devine (Attacking-Midfield) Matty is one of the more recent players to sign for Burscough FC, he joined from Marine FC last season.
DEFENDERS Anthony Brown (Centre-back) Anthony started his career with Formby FC, before moving to Burscough FC. He then left Burscough to join AFC Liverpool, before returning to Burscough FC towards the end of the 2013-2014 season.
Wade Joyce (Centre-Midfield) Wade recently joined the club from Stalybridge during last season, he plays in centre midfield and can be an attacking player.

He then left Nantwich to rejoin Burscough FC, before moving onto play for Marine. He started the season at Warrington Town FC before rejoining Burscough FC last season. Liam Caddick (Striker) Liam joined Burscough, from Buckley at the start of the 2012-2013 season. He leeft for Bangor City during the 2014-2015 season, but returned to Burscough FC for the 2015-2016 season.

Mark Beesley (Centre-forward) Mark began his career in the youth set up at Preston North End and made an appearance in the football league. He is a well travelled player in his career, teams he played for include; Chester City, Hereford United, Forest Green Rovers, Southport, Fleetwood Town, York City, Hednesford Town and a few others. In 2014 he was appointed assistant manager of Burscough FC, later that year he agreed to take up temporary charge of Burscough FC as manager. John Conway (Centre-Forward) John was released by Fleetwood Town FC academy and joined Burscough FC for the 2015-2016 season.

Points From the Past IT’S interesting how certain games can stick in your memory. I remember two pairs of fixtures very distinctly, both from the late sixties and in the old Yorkshire League…
referee must have known why it had been given. “Spot of pushing” we heard him say, and Kenny Fountain despatched the spot-kick very gratefully. If anything, we behind the goal thought it might have been the other way.
First of all, two games we played in the same season against Doncaster United. Their ground was on the old Doncaster Airport site and in this particular season they had been served notice to quit.
It might have been the same season that we opened our home fixtures against newcomers Heeley Amateurs. They were from the Chesterfield area and travelled to Station View on a very sunny August day, but without a goalkeeper – he had been taken ill on the way.
We arrived there and were immediately directed to a pitch by the side of Doncaster Racecourse, wide open save for a few sticks and ropes to keep the crowd at bay. A bit like the Stray really.
I think there may have been one substitute allowed then but there was no reserve ‘keeper so a small but lively full back took over between the posts.
The game was very tight and our goal was one that never was. Thank goodness goal-line technology hadn’t been thought of – a shot from Tony Vincent struck the bar and the ball bounced down at least a foot in front of the goal but the ref gave it.
No mercy was offered, we won 10-0 and I had to convince my friends at work that there had been no misprint in the press. However, the away game was a different story.
He must have been sorry for us being led a bit of a wild goose chase in getting to the ground. Perhaps he’d been in the same situation. One-nil and let’s get back home before a recount.
We arrived full of optimism after what had happened in the home game. The pitch was awful – “It wants forking” said our committee man Ivor Bottomley. You can imagine the replies he got! Sad to say we lost 2-0, and deservedly so.
We won the home game by the same margin, again in a fortunate manner, the winner from a penalty which only the

Ten-Man Railway Earn Point at Radcliffe Harrogate Railway and Radcliffe Borough couldn’t be separated and shared the points in an entertaining 0-0 draw at Belvoir Stadium. Danny Johnson’s side had the first sight of goal just seven minutes in when Thomas Hulme bent a ferocious effort narrowly past the top right corner.
Railway finished the half strongest with Dan Thirkell forcing Cheetham into a near post save before Barrett could only find the side netting after combining with Vincent Dhesi. The best chance of the game fell to Radcliffe substitute Sam McMahon who found himself unmarked at the back post after 63 minutes but couldn’t keep his finish under the cross bar.
Railway responded well though, and soon had the ball in the back of the net when Lawrance Hunter’s low cross found its way to Dan Barrett who lifted the ball over Chris Cheetham only to be flagged offside.
Just like the first 45, Railway got stronger as the half went on with Hunter testing Cheetham from a dead ball and Dhesi firing wide after a lightning quick counter attack. The visitors were then reduced to ten men as the referee deemed Simon Parkes’ kick of the ball at a grounded opponent after the whistle had been blown to be violent conduct and sent the full back on his way.
Radcliffe then spurned the best chance of the half when Hunter misjudged the flight of the ball and allowed Elliott Rokka a free run on goal, although the finish rolled wide of the far post. Tom Stewart was then required to tip Jody Banim’s strike over the bar with the following corner somehow brushing the outside of the post after a six yard box scramble.
Despite being a man down, Lee Ashforth’s men created the best chance to claim all three points deep into stoppage time when Thirkell found room inside the Radcliffe box only to be denied a shot by a last ditch tackle.
