Hello and Welcome back to Station View
Today we welcome Paul Quinn and his team from Brighouse. I know Quinny well from when we played in the same team at Liversedge some years ago with his father Jerry as the manager. Since then we have both progressed through
management and he is having his best season yet as the Brighouse manager. I only live a couple of miles away from the Brighouse ground so I have been to a few of their matches as they play their home matches on a Monday evening like ourselves.
They are without doubt an exceptional team and are fully justified of their current league position, sat in the play offs. We will be in for an extremely tough test. I played for Brighouse and so did my assistant Simon Wood, they are a great club with fantastic ambition and I still always receive a warm welcome on every visit. I wish everyone involved a good day today and hope they have a successful season.
we have now slipped into the bottom two after Droylsden beat Glossop 2-1. Without a doubt its not where we want to be, but I do believe that our position is a bit unrealistic at the minute. After todays game and the Clitheroe game next week we will have played 15 league games, of them 15 league games we will have played every single team in the top ten, including Brighouse twice!
Last week we entertained Northwich, and the feeling of losing to such a late goal was awful and especially after the performance that the players put in. They deserved so much more against the league leaders and speaking to people afterwards, including their management, everyone agreed.
Therefore we have played 4 matches against teams in the bottom 12 positions. That is a ridiculous run of games and something I am aware of. That is not to say I am not disappointed with where we find ourselves but having narrowly lost to a few of the teams we have played `I know that this squad have every chance of finishing in a respectable position in the table.
We then travelled to Scarborough mid-week and I told the players to continue with the same levels, baring a 5 minute spell in the first half we did just that and we managed to gain a 2-2 draw and again we deserved more, however before the game everyone would agree that a point would have been taken. It stopped the run of defeats in the league and I think that was the most important thing.
Rob Worrall will extend his loan deal for a further month with us from Harrogate Town. His final match was the game at Scarborough and as I write these notes we are trying to finalise the papers with the FA to ensure that he is eligible for today’s game, Rob has been superb for us so far in his time with us and it was always the aim to keep him as long as we possibly could.

perience to progress in what I am sure is going to be a good career. As most of you will probably be aware by now, Nigel Corner has returned to the club as acting chairman, Nigel was the chairman when I was offered the job as manager and since then I have kept in touch with him on a regular basis. I am not surprised at his return and I know that he will be a good addition for the club. He won’t be attending as many matches as before, however, his role will be more off the pitch and ensuring with the help of others that we can progress the club. I recently read the Alex Ferguson book and he said when he took the role at Manchester United that to develop the team on the pitch was essential but without the club developing off the pitch then it would not have been possible, after all, its the club that you are selling to the players. Obviously we aren’t Manchester United and never will be but we need to ensure that we do things the right way and I am sure Nigel will add to the stability and enthusiasm of the other people around the club. Barrett double helps Railway into round two Harrogate Railway suffered an agonising defeat last Saturday as Michael Roddy’s 92nd minute goal gave Northwich Victoria a 1-0 win at Station View.
Ryan Sharrocks, who had replaced Vincent Dhesi early on, had the first chance of the second half when the ball broke to the winger on the right only for Mason Springthorpe to beat away the strike.
Lee Ashforth made four changes from the previous weekend’s defeat at table toppers Warrington and handed a first start to Tom Owen up front. Alex Low was twice required to stop Northwich taking the lead just before the 20 minute mark when he executed a well-timed sliding tackle to deny Jordan Williams before swiftly getting to his feet and heading off the line.
Northwich then blew their chance to take the lead when a long throw into the Railway box fell to Aboubacar Sanogo at the far post, however the Northwich man sliced his effort wide. Dan Thirkell crafted out an opening for his side when he threaded through Owen whose powerful strike was again matched by Springthorpe, much to the frustration of the hosts.
Jim Gannon’s side then rattled the woodwork from the resulting corner after a header hit the post, although Railway managed to clear their lines.
Rob Worrall then tried his luck for Railway in the 81st minute as the game looked to be heading for a draw, sending a left footed shot over the bar.
Harrogate then had a spell of dominance midway through the half that ending in Fatlum Ibrahimi almost giving the hosts a lead when his dipping volley from the edge of the area was a fraction too high.
The visitors snatched all three points at the death when an unmarked Roddy was found at the back post and remained calm to score before being mobbed by his teammates who were delighted with their late winner.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

With Harrogate Railway’s 2015/16 squad full of talented youngsters looking to build a reputation at Evo-Stik level, Lawrance Hunter has become an influential figure in the Railway set up and a role model to some of his teammates. Summer’s managerial changes have handed more responsibility to Hunter and allowed the left back to become involved with running training sessions and so on, something Lawrance is keen to continue. At only 28 years old, Hunter is in his footballing prime and, with his father the Technical Director and U21 head coach at Southampton, has advice coming from exactly the right place. He said: “My Dad is always very honest with me which is good because I can be my own harshest critic. Sometimes when I think I haven’t played well he might give me a few positives to think about. “Lee and Simon’s style is one that I’m enjoying because they’re giving me and a couple of the players that were here last year a bit more responsibility in the changing rooms and when we’re playing which I’ve really enjoyed. “I’m currently a PE teacher so a natural progression would be to go into coaching when I finish playing; it’s pretty much the family business. “I’ve got a degree in sports science as well so I think it would be a natural progression for me eventually. Talking of the younger members of the squad, Hunter has been impressed by many of the faces that have arrived at Station View this Summer and is confident they can go on to have great success.

Hunter explained: “At my previous clubs, until I was 25 really, I was pretty much a left winger or attacking midfielder, but I think I’ve found my feet at full back. “I always enjoy playing there because you can get more involved, start more attacks and receive a lot more of the ball. “I’m starting to enjoy my defensive responsibilities, but I do like to get forward, get as many assists as I can and get the team going. “I set myself a target to get at least ten assists a season now that I’ve got the opportunity to take set pieces as well.”

WHO ARE BRIGHOUSE TOWN?
The club was originally formed in 1963, as a representative side of the Blakeborough Valve Company of Brighouse and their home games were played on the Woodhouse Recreation Ground, with the side competing in the Huddersfield Works League.
The club gained various league honours over the years, the most successful coming in the 1968/69 season, when they won both the League Cup as well as the Halifax District Cup. Following this success, the club took the huge step of obtaining its own ground at Hove Edge. Whilst at Green Lane, where they played for more than a decade, they achieved two more league titles before taking another major step, in applying for and achieving West Riding County
Amateur League status in 1975.
The club thrived there, until their Green Lane ground was developed for housing, upon which they moved to their present ground, just round the corner, on St Giles Road. There followed a period of stagnation, competing mainly in the lower divisions of the WRCAL until 1988 when the demise of the Blakeborough Company resulted in a new outlook, as well as a new name. This change proved to be the catalyst for the most successful period in the clubs history so far. The newly named Brighouse Town AFC won promotion to the WRCA Premier Division in their first season, as well as winning the WRCAL Division One Cup. In 1991 the Premier

Division Championship was won for the first time and in 1992 soon followed the West Riding County Challenge Cup. In 1994 Town won the Premier Division League Cup and were runners up in the County Challenge Cup, and they were Premier Division Champions again in 1995. Season 1995/96 was perhaps the most successful season in the clubs history so far. Brighouse Town once again won the WRCAL Premiership title and also completed the double by winning the WRCA League Cup. They also won the Bob Wedgeworth Memorial Trophy. Season 2008-09, saw the club make the significant step into Semi-Professional football by entering and being accepted
into the Northern Counties East League Division One. After only two seasons in NCEL Division One, the Club won promotion to the NCEL Premier Division under the guidance of Mark Brier and Daz Attwood. 2011/12 Season saw the appointment of Paul Quinn as Manager and after 4th and 2nd place finishes in his first two seasons, the NCEL Premier Title was achieved with a record points total in 2013/14 – the Clubs 50th anniversary season.
Promotion to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North brought the highest level of football in the history of the Club only six years after leaving the West Riding County Amateur League, and a new and exciting challenge lay ahead. A very respectable 15th place finish was achieved in Club’s inaugural season and with valuable experience gained and Paul Quinn still at the helm, further progress is hoped for in 2015/16 season.

Railway fight back to earn deserved draw
Harrogate Railway claimed an important point at Queensgate on Tuesday night as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Scarborough Athletic.
as Moke had a chance to make the score 3-1, but missed the target, and Jack Stockdill was unable to power Ryan Sharrocks’ low cross past Jody Barford who comfortably saved.
Lee Ashforth’s side took the lead just five minutes in when Tom Owen headed home Lawrance Hunter’s in-swinging free kick at the back post to score his third goal for the club in his first three games.
The visitors then grabbed a deserved equaliser on 55 minutes when Stockdill carried the ball with purpose into the Scarborough half and sent an arrowing strike from 30 yards into the top left corner; beating Barford all ends up.
Scarborough soon equalised, however, when Fernando Moke showed quality and composure to lob the ball into an empty net on the volley after Tom Goodwin’s punched clearance had dropped kindly for the winger.
Scarborough responded by putting pressure on Railway’s back line, although the away side’s defensive unit held firm with Captain Dan Thirkell clearing off the line from a corner.
The Seadogs were buoyed by the leveller and went close through Gary Bradshaw’s near post effort before Alex Low denied Ryan Blott’s lofted finish with a well-timed header off the line. From the resulting corner, Scarborough completed the five minute turnaround after sloppy defending allowed Ryan Qualter to tap home from a yard at the back post. The fixture continued in end to end fashion
With seven minutes to go, Harrogate stopper Goodwin showed great concentration to make a stunning save when his team needed it most as he acrobatically pushed over Moke’s high, powerful attempt. The hosts then came the closest of either side to claiming all three points when Qualter managed to hook the ball back towards goal after some pinball in the Railway area only for his effort to bounce off the outside of the post and out, to the relief of all in blue.

Chris Fisher - Defence - 25 - Fish is in his third season at Brighouse Town FC having signed from Garforth Town. James Pollard - midfield - 18 - Jimmy signed from Bradford City in July 2015 having spent a number of years at Huddersfield Town. Pollard can play both in the centre of midfield and full back. Martin Allison - 34 – Midfield. Very experienced player at this level gained at Ashton Utd, Mossley and Ossett Albion. James Hurtley - midfield - 26 - broke into the first team following a successful trial with the clubs development squad in June 2012. James has progressed to become a regular in the heart of Towns midfield scooping both the Players player and Managers player’s award last season. Isaac Baldwin - midfield - 18 – Attacking midfield player who has a keen eye for goal. Another product of the successful development team who had periodic spells with the first team last season and impressed whenever he stepped up. Points From the Past WE continue our look at the old FA Amateur Cup, the most prestigious competition for us in the nineteen fifties, sixties and early seventies.
game to a virtual standstill. During the dispute, with the absence of many of the top southern amateurs, Northern League clubs had a good record in the Amateur Cup with Bishop Auckland and Stockton in particular doing well.
Last time we found out that the first winners in 1894 were Old Carthusians, who beat Casuals 2-1 in the final which was played on a ground in Richmond. They were, of course, old boys of Charterhouse School in Surrey and during the early seasons the ‘old boys’ clubs linked to the public schools were particularly successful.
As the war approached one southern club, Clapton, began to make their presence felt and regularly featured in the later stages. The period between the World Wars saw attendances on the rise, crowds for the final reaching a peak of 35,000 in 1929.
However, as amateur clubs from the north, especially Durham and Teesside, came into prominence the old boys began to lose interest in the tournament and eventually started their own in 1902. Selfish or what? It was called the Arthur Dunn Cup and is still in existence today.
Even that was nothing compared to the Wembley full house of 100,000 in 1951, but that’s another story. Although Bishop Auckland had four Amateur Cup winning seasons between the wars, southern clubs generally dominated with Clapton, Leyton, Ilford and Dulwich Hamlet leading the pack.
They deserted the Amateur Cup en masse and, five years later, the competition also lost some of its other clubs when, following a dispute with the FA over the alleged preferential treatment given to professionals, several amateur clubs formed the Amateur Football Association, later to become the Amateur Football Alliance.
By the time of the start of the Second World War the FA Amateur Cup had re-established itself as the one trophy all eligible clubs wanted to win. Rivalry between the Northern League and the south-based Isthmian League over which was the stronger grew and this continued after the war.
Membership of this prohibited clubs from taking part in any competitions under the auspices of the FA. So, for a few years at least, clubs such as Casuals and Ealing (both previous finalists) were banned from competing in the Amateur Cup. This feud ended just before another feud, the First World War, brought our wonderful
