Welcome to Jim Gannon and his team from Northwich.
Northwich are one of the sleeping giants of non league football and after having a great history they are now attempting to work their way back up the football pyramid. As well as starting exceptionally well in the league having won 9 out of 10 fixtures they are also having a good FA Cup run and this obviously shows what an exceptional team they are this year. Having narrowly missed out on promotion last season when losing in the play off semi finals they will be hoping to go one better this season and gain promotion. We wish Jim and his team a nice afternoon and all the best for the season ahead. In our last home fixture we entertained Glasshoughton Welfare in the County Cup, we ran out 4-1 winners in another entertaining match at Station View. Most people will have expected us to win that match and that shows the expectation levels at our club. We put in a good performance on the night and created a lot of chances and maybe should have scored more. It was good to see Dan Barrett get on the scoresheet and now all our centre forwards are off
the mark.
It was also good to get Simon Wood back onto the pitch, Simon is the assistant manager of course but he picked up an injury in a reserve match a few weeks ago so has been unavailable for selection, he has a vast amount of experience playing at our level and he will be playing as much as possible to aid the development of our younger players. Last Saturday we travelled to Warrington, another difficult match was expected and this proved the case. After 58 minutes we were losing 5-0 and it was a strange one for me as I thought we played some of the best football we had played in that period, it showed then as we recovered somewhat and scored 3 goals in a ten minute spell before Warrington added another as we were pushing forward to try to get another goal. We signed Tom Owen in the week before the game and just missed the deadline for him to be involved in the County Cup match, we introduced him with 30 minutes to go and he scored two goals. He gives me another option now and as his fitness returns he will be a good addition to our squad.
We have a very difficult month of fixtures ahead, but we are not far away having lost matches by the odd goal and sometimes late goals, we are still rebuilding the team and each week I believe we are getting stronger and more effective in what we do. I hope that we can continue to develop and that the players keep confidence in themselves because I have the absolute confidence that they will have a successful season. Finally, I have added Martin Powell to our management team, Martin has just passed his UEFA B badge and he will be a big help to me both in the changing room and in the technical area when Simon is playing. Its important that as well as developing the players and the squad on the pitch that we also strive to improve ourselves off the pitch and ensure that the environment that we create for the players is a successful one. I hope that you are enjoying the matches that you have seen so far and that you continue to enjoy them and we still see plenty of goals, hopefully at the right end! Enjoy the game

It was the home team who started the brightest with Dan Thirkell’s powerful strike from the edge of the box blocked and Dan Barrett forcing an impressive one-handed save from Jordan Watson after Harry Brown had created an opening.
Railway struck the woodwork once again in the 69th minute when Dhesi almost executed an audacious lob from mid-way inside the Glasshoughton half only to see his attempt bounce off the top of the bar.
Railway were in the ascendancy and took the lead in the 29th minute when Thirkell volleyed home Lawrance Hunter’s corner from eight yards out.
The NCEL Division One side got on the scoresheet in the 77th minute when Regan Fish darted into the area and remained composed to slide past Tom Goodwin and make the score 3-1.
It took Lee Ashforth’s side four minutes to double their advantage when a perfectly weighted Vincent Dhesi through ball set Barrett in on goal, and the striker executed a delightful chip over Watson.
Railway then sealed their place in the second round, where they will meet Barnoldswick Town, when Barrett cut inside from the left and curled into the top corner for his second goal of the evening.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

JACK STOCKDILL
Joining Harrogate Railway this season from Vanarama National League side Guiseley is 20-year-old midfielder Jack Stockdill. Stockdill had risen through the ranks at League One Bradford City having captained the club’s youth set-up, and trained with the club from the age of eight, before joining the Lions for the 2014/15 campaign. Now an established member of Lee Ashforth and Simon Wood’s first team, Stockdill reflects on his footballing life and outlines his aims at Station View. He said: “I was at Bradford from a young age and I really enjoyed it! I got involved with the first team there and with the Captain Gary Jones who looked after me and helped me out. “At Guiseley, I didn’t play as much as I wanted to, but it was a good experience as we got promoted last year. “Coming to Harrogate Railway has been about enjoying playing again, getting that winning feeling and getting fit. “It’s good knowing you’re going to have a chance to play and I’m enjoying playing for Woody and Ash so far. “The information they give is very helpful and relevant, but it’s very calm in the way they do it and I think that calmness rubs off on the whole squad.” Jack has impressed at Station View having made 13 starts in a central midfield role, forming an effective partnership with Captain Dan Thirkell.
The young midfielder also provided a moment of magic in Railway’s first win of the season against Radcliffe Borough when he spectacularly lifted the ball over the ‘keeper and in from just past the halfway line. The former Bradford man said: “Playing next to Thirks is good because he sits and gives me a license to go forward and do what I want to do; I think it has worked well. “I love getting on the ball and I just want to make things happen, I want be more attacking, get forward and score more goals. “I’ve loved shooting from a very young age; sometimes it doesn’t come off but sometimes it does and hopefully Queens Head Inn Kettlesing I’ll score a fewNorth this season. The generally accepted year for Northwich Victoria’s foundation is 1874 by Messrs Charles James Hughes and James Heyworth.
tered the Welsh Cup, which at the time was open to Welsh teams as well as English teams situated close to the border.
However according to club historian Ken Edwards’ book ‘A Team for All Seasons’, the Northwich Victoria Association Football Club organisation could have been in existence from at least 1870.
Their best achievement in the competition was in the 1881–82 and 1888–89 seasons, when they reached the final, losing to Druids and Bangor respectively.
Northwich played their first challenge matches in the 1874 seasons and originally accepted both association football and rugby rules, shown in 1876 when they contested an away match under Rugby rules at Farnworth and Appleton F.C. (now known as Widnes Vikings) and then at home under association rules, winning both games. The first time the club entered an organised competition was in 1877, when they en-

In 1880, they entered the inaugural competition for the new Cheshire Football Association Challenge Cup (Cheshire Senior Cup). The club became the first winners of the cup with a victory over Hartford St. John’s, and went on to win the cup for the next five seasons, defeating in the finals Birkenhead (1881), Northwich Novelty (1882), Crewe Alexandra (1883 and 1884), and Davenham

(1885).
In 1890, the club became a founding member of the second incarnation of The Combination, Northwich’s first league. In their second season in the league they finished runners-up. In 1968, Northwich were one of several members from the Cheshire County League to leave and become founder members of the newly created Northern Premier League. Generally finishing around mid-table or in the top half, it was the 1976–77 season when Northwich came closest to winning the league, narrowly missing out on the title on goal difference to Boston United on the final day of the season following a 1–1 draw with Scarborough.
In the same season Northwich had their best run in the FA Cup in modern times, reaching the Fourth Round (see FA Cup History).
The following day, it was announced that the club were to be evicted from the Victoria Stadium as THOR Chemicals had purchased the land.
In 1979, Northwich were founder members of yet another league, when the Alliance Premier League (later the Football Conference) was formed. In 1980–81, Northwich finished 4th, their highest position in the league. They were the last ever-present team when they were relegated in the 2004–05 season.
On 1 February 2012, ex-Manchester City player and Preston North End manager Paul Simpson was named as the new manager, with Premier League winner Alan Wright as his assistant. However, Simpson departed after only a month. Simpson was due to take up a role in Portugal at the end of the season, however, this was brought forward to March, meaning Simpson would leave following the club’s FA Trophy Quarter Final match on Saturday 25 February. His assistant, Alan Wright, oversaw a match with Rushall Olympic during Simpson’s absence. On 27 February it was announced that Martin Foyle would take over until the end of the season, with Alan Wright continuing as assistant manager.
The club reached the final of the FA Trophy in the 1982–83 season, but were beaten 2–1 by Telford United. However the club achieved silverware in the 1983–84 season when they defeated Bangor City 2–1 in the same competition, the FA Trophy in a replay of the final at the appropriately named Victoria Ground in Stoke-on-Trent. The first game, played at Wembley Stadium, was drawn 1–1. In the 1995–96 season, they reached the final of the FA Trophy once again, returning to Wembley for the first time since their draw and eventual victory in the competition a decade earlier. They were defeated 3–1 by Macclesfield Town. The new century saw Northwich face great financial difficulties and relegation, with the club nearly folding following administration in both the 2004–05 and 2009–10 seasons. On 16 January 2012, it was announced that the management team of Andy Preece, Andy Morrison, and Darren Ryan would leave the club to join Airbus UK Broughton in the Welsh Premier League.
In April 2012 the Northern Premier League announced that Northwich Victoria had been expelled from the league for a breach of league rules regarding financial matters. Although lying second in the league, the club was not allowed to contest the playoffs. On appeal, FA ruled that the punishment was excessive; instead the club was relegated one step in the league. Northwich started the 2012–13 season in the lowest league in the club’s history. With no home ground and a large section of the fan-base refusing to associate with the Club or its owner, Northwich Victoria achieved its lowest ever home game attendance, with only 86 spectators witnessing a 3–4 defeat to Stamford A.F.C.

Debutant Owen nets twice in ‘non-league day’ thriller Three goals in the final ten minutes gave Harrogate Railway a positive ending to an otherwise disappointing 6-3 defeat at Warrington last Saturday afternoon.
Things looked to be getting worse for the visitors when Warrington were awarded a penalty as Hunter was adjudged to have fouled Steven Gillespie, although the substitute couldn’t beat Goodwin who dived to his left to deny the Warrington man.
The Wire took the lead after 18 minutes when a right wing cross fortunately bounced off the bar and to the feet of Ben Deegan who only had Dan Thirkell to beat on the line.
The save looked to galvanise Railway, even at 5-0 down, who continued to play attractive football and got on the scoresheet through substitute Tom Owen on his club debut when Karl Wills spilled Lawrance Hunter’s shot.
Warrington then doubled their lead after Nathan Burke’s shot was parried by Tom Goodwin into the path of Scott Metcalfe to stroke home.
Railway scored their second of the afternoon with three minutes of normal time remaining when Charlie Clamp’s lofted through ball found Owen who battled with the goalkeeper before heading in to cap a memorable debut.
Four minutes into the second half the hosts extended their lead when Ciaran Kilheeney was teed up on the edge of the area and placed his shot with just enough power to squirm past Goodwin.
Harrogate had gathered momentum and got a third goal back in the 90th minute when Clamp read an under hit back pass and sprinted onto the end of it before coolly slotting low under the ‘keeper.
Two minutes later Warrington had a fourth when Goodwin was forced to rush out his goal, however the stopper was left behind by Deegan who was left with an easy finish. Shaun Reid’s side were rampant and soon grabbed a fifth when Chris Gaghan’s individual effort saw him dribble into the box from the right wing and add to Railway’s misery.
With Ashforth’s men sensing a remarkable comeback, bodies were poured forward allowing Warrington to add a sixth through Burke who finished a low cross to crush any dreams of a late Railway rally deep into added time.

NORTHWICH VICTORIA PLAYER PROFILES Mason Springthorpe Goal-keeper. Age 20. He joined Everton for ÂŁ125,000 from Shrewsbury Town in February 2011 but never played a competitive match, spending a month on loan at Woking in January 2014.
Rushall Olympic. Clarke originally signed for the club from Woodley Sports after impressing former manager Andy Preece in a Cheshire Cup Final at Altrincham. Midfielder Michael Roddy Aged 27- re-signed for the Club in November 2014 following his release from Welsh Premier side Airbus UK Broughton. Michael started his career in the youth set-up at Bolton Wanderers before taking in spells at Lincoln City F.C, Guiseley and Anagenisi Deryneia of Cyprus.

Abou joined the Club midway through the 13/14 season, playing his part in the end of season unbeaten spell which included only a solitary defeat in the last twenty matches in league and cup. He scored some vital goals from centre-midfield and likes to show his brilliant skills on the ball.

Cedric Krou Central defender/midfielder. Cedric, 23, is an imposing holding midfielder or central defender, and is strong and composed on the ball. Silky but strong Full-back. Signed in September 2014, after being released from Stockport County where he made an impressive 64 appearances in two seasons in the national league north, scoring three goals. Mohamud Ali Age 21. Strong defender Mo can play anywhere in the Vics’ rearguard, but mainly plays as a fullback on either side.
Richie Bennett Age 23. Richie is a tall and athletic striker who arrived from Ashton United in Dec 2014. Possessing a strong left-foot, he can also link-up play amongst the attackers with ease. Counts Mossley as a former employer.
Jim Gannon Manager Age 49. Jim has been in charge since February 2014. Has lots of experience at Football League Clubs in management; namely Stockport County - guiding the Hatters’ to promotion to League One after defeating Rochdale 3-2 at Wembley in the promotion play-off final of 2008. United.

Points From the Past TODAY we start a look at one of the most prestigious cup competitions in its time, the FA Amateur Cup. For us in the 1950s and 1960s it was as important as the FA Cup is today.
Pickford. None of those names ring a bell with me, do they with you? They were instructed to purchase a suitable trophy, its cost not to exceed £30, and to obtain medals for the winners and runner-up, their total cost not to exceed 32/- (£1.50) and 20/- (£1) respectively. Don’t laugh, that must have been a fair amount of money in those days.
From 1949 to the end in 1974 the final was played at Wembley and for a long time was televised live by the BBC, albeit in black and white.
The initial competition attracted 81 entries and the first matches were played on 21 October 1893. Interesting to note that goal nets and the penalty kick had only been introduced three years earlier.
Let’s go back to the beginning. With professional football being introduced in the late 19th century, particularly in the north and midlands, performances of amateur clubs in the FA Cup were on the decline.
The first final was at Richmond on 7 April 1894 between Casuals and Old Carthusians and attracted a crowd of 3,500. R Topham opened the scoring for Casuals after only four minutes but Buzzard equalised from a cross by Stanborough 30 minutes later. Stanborough then gave the old boys the lead just before the halftime oranges.
To maintain the interest of amateur football it became obvious that an alternative competition solely for the amateurs was required. In August 1892 the Sheffield club, a name well known to us and the oldest football club in the world, wrote to the FA offering to put up a cup to be competed for by amateur clubs.
No further goals in the second half so Old Carthusians won 2-1 and became the first winners of the FA Amateur Cup and a splendid time was had by all.
Although this offer was declined, the FA later resolved “that it is desirable to institute a Cup open for competition to amateur clubs under the control and management of the association”.
