Tonight we entertain Glasshoughton Welfare in the West Riding County Cup. Glasshoughton are one of my old clubs and when I left Harrogate Railway as a player, I went to Glasshoughton for the last 6 months of the season. I loved the club and my time there and with the facilities that they have there and the ground they really are a very good non league club. We will welcome back their manager Mick Norbury who spent some time here as both player and part of the management team. I remember playing against Mick when he was at Ossett Albion and I remember hating getting into one on one situations with him, he didn’t mind leaving his foot in! He had a desire to win that was unbelievable and I am sure he will be taking that attitude into his team. Last week we entertained Glossop North End and we put in a very good performance against the league leaders. Although we eventually lost the game, I think people around the ground saw what we are trying to build and with the youth of the team it is an exciting time for us all as we try to rebuild the team. It is our aim to stay
in the league and we have more than enough in our squad for this to happen, a point a game will ensure this and we are not far from our target.
We have played a lot of the top teams and only played two of the bottom ten, and beat them both so I am sure we will pick up some valuable and much deserved points over the coming months, We have a very difficult month coming up with fixtures against Warrington, Bamber Bridge, Northwich, Scarborough and Brighouse but we are enjoying every challenge and I can ensure you the players are all up for the fight of each match. It was certainly an exciting week for Harry Brown. He made his second start for the team and put in a superb performance and topped that off with his goal, following that he passed his driving test at the first attempt. Congratulations to the 18 year old from everyone at the club. Harry has been excellent this year, he arrived in pre season on the trial night and he has waited for his chance putting in several good performances from the bench and in his first match he played out of position at right back and put in a great performance. Wood was continually telling me to forget about his age and size and to give him a chance, after our poor performance at Ossett Albion, I felt like it was a good time and he certainly did not let me down. It was a lesson learned by me as he proved that age and size does not always matter. I still believe that we may need a leader with a bit of experience in our team to aid the players in our development, but Matt Heath type players are very hard to come by and certainly they often require large sums of money, and this is something that we dont have as a club. This is not a moan however, I have a squad together that all play for enjoyment and development and I want to make sure that anyone we bring in can buy into the philosophy that we are trying to build. So far I look around the changing room and I have almost got the squad that I want to work with, however we want to always make sure we improve it and that may mean bringing someone in or letting someone go. I think its important for a squad to be happy and I want to keep this one happy and make sure they all enjoy their football, its the best way to be successful.

Ossett Albion 2-1 Harrogate Railway
Railway run out of time in close contest with Albion Ossett Albion held off a late Harrogate Railway comeback on Saturday 26th September to record a 2-1 win at Queens Terrace.
It took Ossett 11 minutes of second half football to double their lead when, after Railway had blocked multiple attempts on goal, Eddy Birch smashed home from inside the visitors’ box after the ball had ricocheted to the unmarked attacker.
Lee Ashforth will have been disappointed to see his side concede just five minutes into the contest, when Connor Bower was set free in behind the visitors defence and kept his nerve to tuck the ball into the bottom left corner.
The tempo of the game had died slightly after Ossett’s second with neither side able to craft any clear cut opportunities, until substitute Vincent Dhesi handed his side a lifeline.
Eight minutes later Tom Goodwin made the save of the match when he acrobatically tipped Bower’s well struck volley over the bar to deny the striker a second goal.
Stephen Bromley was the provider as he sent a perfectly weighted through ball behind the Ossett defence that Dhesi latched on to and exquisitely chipped over the stranded Souter.
Railway’s first opening came just after the quarter of an hour mark when Simon Parkes found Jordan Outerbridge on the left flank with an accurate cross field pass, however the winger’s shot was well blocked.
Railway thought they had completed the comeback three minutes later when two second half substitutes combined as Harry Brown played in Dan Barrett who rounded the goalkeeper and looked certain to level the scores only for the linesman to raise his flag and call the striker offside
Fatlum Ibrahimi worked the Albion stopper minutes before half time when the midfielder beat his man on the edge of the box and attempted to bend a shot into the far corner only for Brett Souter to claim the attempt.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Jack Mccarthey Jack received the player of the year award at Garforth Town last season and has now made the step up to the Evostick, after interest from Salford, Northwich and Matlock, Jack has opted for Station View and the youngster will have a bright future if his development continues. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

WHO ARE GLASSHOUGHTON WELFARE?
The club was formed in 1964 as works outfit, Anson Sports. Initially the club plied its trade on a variety of parks pitches and competed in the Castleford Sunday League. A change to Saturday football and entry to the West Yorkshire League saw the policy of only playing company employees scrapped. However, lack of a regular home ground prevented further success.
In 1974, an approach was made by the Glasshoughton Colliery to adopt the name of the Colliery Welfares disbanded club and play on its Leeds Road ground. This enabled the move into senior football and entry to the West Yorkshire League and ultimately the Yorkshire League and currently the Northern Counties East Football League. The retirement of
almost all the Committee in 2007 threatened the Club’s existence, but funding and publicity raised by the involvement of former Liverpool goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar ensured the Club were able to take their place in the NCEL Premier Division for the 2007/2008 Season. However, the need to appoint 3 Managers in as many months saw the Club make a poor start to the season from which they never recovered. Battling against all odds, Manager Dave Holmes made use of limited resources and fielded a number of teams packed with youngsters from the Club’s strong Under 19’s. For many of these players it was a difficult transition into Premier Division football, and the Club ultimately ended the season in bottom place, resulting in relegation to the First

Division.
Despite a good pre-season which led to an optimistic outlook, the Club continued to struggle to adjust to life in the new Division. Despite a total of 3 Managers at the helm we endured a torrid season and despite some creditable performances against some of the top sides, a lack of experience was again the team’s downfall, which resulted in a second successive bottom place finish. Fortunately the Club remained in the First Division for the 2009/2010 season, but another poor start saw the Committee turn to former Harrogate Railway Assistant Manager Stuart Waddington who turned around the Club’s fortunes and saw them climb from bottom of the Division in September to a very
respectable and comfortable 13th place come the end of the season. This gave the Club a very optimistic outlook for the new season, but only 3 weeks from the start we received the surprising news that Stuart Waddington had resigned for personal reasons. Prompt action by the Committee saw former Glasshoughton players Craig Elliot and Paul Mattison appointed as the new management team within a week, and they worked hard to take the club back to the NCEL Premier Division. Harrogate Railway 2-4 Glossop North End Four second half goals sent Glossop North End to the top of the Evo-Stik NPL Division One North a week ago today as Chris Willcock’s side overcame a determined Harrogate Railway 4-2 at Station View.
Just three minutes later, Andrew Smart’s powerful shot from the left was saved by Goodwin, but second half substitute Ashley Stott was the quickest to react and put the ball into an empty net. Just minutes after Railway skipper Dan Thirkell had completed the second goal line clearance of the evening, the hosts found an equaliser.
Lee Ashforth made five changes for his side’s second match in three days and handed a first start of the season to Dan Barrett in a three man attack.
Vincent Dhesi clipped a ball over the Glossop defence for substitute Rob Worrall to latch onto and, although Glossop ‘keeper’ Gregory Hall looked favourite to reach the ball first, he hesitated and allowed Worrall to nip past and level the score.
Glossop looked dangerous from set pieces and almost took the lead after 33 minutes when Tom Goodwin’s punched corner clearance was directed back towards goal only for Simon Parkes to clear off the line at full stretch.
Glossop then sealed the win with two goals just a minute apart from each other with only ten minutes left to play, first when Stott made enough contact with a deep free kick delivery from the left wing to divert the ball past Goodwin.
Railway then took the lead through Harry Brown, making only his second start for the club, when the 18-year-old accelerated past his marker on the left and sent a fierce left footed drive in off the far post. The game changed in the 56th minute when Glossop Captain David Young blasted the ball into the bottom right corner from the spot after Astley Mullholland got the wrong side of Jack Stockdill and was brought down by the midfielder.
Glossop’s fourth and final goal followed shortly after as Railway conceded possession in a dangerous area allowing Stott to find Edward Moran in acres of space to find a finish to beat Goodwin.

Points From the Past THE West Riding County FA Challenge Cup, to give it its full title, has never come to rest here at Station View. We have made the semi-final once or twice over the years. On one occasion, in 1985 I seem to remember, correct me if I’m wrong, Goole Town just got the better of us in a somewhat feisty encounter at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds. I think the score was 2-1 and it proved to be manager Freddie Cliff’s last game in charge of the Rail’. In fact Goole Town have been a thorn in our side on several occasions in this cup. It’s not surprising that they have won the cup more times than anyone else – 13 in all. Now, after changes in their administration, they are known as Goole AFC. We have to go back to 1924 for the first time the competition was held and, for some reason, Huddersfield Town and Leeds United finished up joint winners. Looking through a list of the early winners we find there a few clubs now no longer in existence. Bradford United won the trophy in 1950, Salts (Saltaire) were winners in 1955 and 1956. Salts were members of the Yorkshire League for many years until their demise and it was always a grand day out when we travelled there. The ground was very picturesque, down by the canal next to
the big factories on the famous estate. Swillington Miners Welfare won in 1953, the only time they have lifted the cup. It comes as a surprise to me that Selby Town, one of the biggest names in Yorkshire non-League football in the fifties and sixties, only won the County Cup once, and that was back in 1928. FC Halifax Town have only won the competition twice, in 2004 and 2013, but this can be explained by the fact that, for long periods, they took part in the West Riding FA Senior Cup which was for Football League clubs in the county. Behind Goole in the list of most wins are Farsley Celtic (10) and Guiseley (9). Interesting to note that during the sixties we were higher in status than Guiseley until they joined the Yorkshire League from the West Yorkshire League towards the end of the decade. We twice put five goals past them in cup games during those heady days and now look at them, plying their trade in the fifth tier of English football. Amazing. The latest club to win the West Riding County Cup for the first time is Eccleshill United who were victorious in 2014. Can we become the next? Let’s hope…
