LEE’S VIEW Welcome back to Station View
Today we entertain Warrington and we hope that there management team and all associated people have had a safe journey over the M62 for todays game. Sean Reid has helped me this year by allowing Tom Goodwin to train with them through the season as he lives near there. Its support and friendships like these that make football management enjoyable. When we played Warrington away and lost 6-3 I told Sean that they were undoubtably the best team in the league and at the time they were third in the league, now its debatable that I don’t often get things right but on that occasion I did. Warrington are the best team in the league and they will go onto win the league, but that doesn’t mean that today will be made easy for them. Our five away games since my last notes were hugely contrasting, a 5-0 defeat at Witton when not only lack of games was evident but a second half performance certainly that was well below par and then after much discussion as a management team and a players meeting we went to Lancaster and were very unfortu-
nate to come away losing 1-0. We then travelled to Farsley and I believe it was much publicised my thoughts that night, at 1-0 up we had a definite penalty turned down that would have also had their Goalkeeper sent off, fine margins, we lost 3-1. Finally last week we were away at Radcliffe, I asked the players not to concede and we drew the game 0-0 and gained an excellent point away from home. We then travelled to Bamber with a depleted team and we lost heavily 5-0 and we did not play as well as we had in previous games. With 14 points now we must aim to clear ourselves from the bottom two and work towards 35 points that I believe would keep us safe. We brought back Harry Coates from Harrogate Town and he was superb last year and I have tried several times this season to re-sign him and at last we managed to have him back in our ranks. He has been a big player when we had him and has been a leader on the pitch to add to

away from the relegation zone.
He has played in all four of the games and last week turned down an approach from Scarborough before being recalled prior to the Bamber game.
However, I cannot keep using this excuse so the remainder of the season is important for us as a club, if we have a successful run in we will have moved away from the relegation zone and we will be able to enjoy the summer and plan for next season. I believe this will be the case.
We are now just over halfway through our season and it has been a time for reflection and to see if we replicate what we have done so far will we be enough to keep Harrogate Railway in the league, I would be a poor manager if I did not think that this was the case.
I have added Nathan Curtis this week, after hearing he was available it was without doubt a good opportunity for us and we now have a proven striker at this level.
I want to be a manager that keeps a settled team and a small group of players that we can work with throughout the year but we have had to have a rebuilding year and that was always going to mean that we changed the personnel quite a lot as the season went on.
I also added George Foster from Pickering, it is a step up for George and one that he wants to grab with both hands especially with the suspension of Simon Parkes over the next three games.
I have done this to improve the squad and the team and give us the best chance of not only being in this league next season but making us competitive.
I am hoping to add another before the game but at the time of writing these notes it has not been finalised. Finally, I would like to welcome Rob Northfield back to the football club, I was not around in his last stint involved but after having discussions with him and meeting him, the passion he shows to help us in many different ways was highly evident and his enthusiasm is infectious.
In the first squad of the season we had 7/16 remaining from last season so realistically we knew it was going to be hard. Against Lancaster only 4 players remain from last season, Laurance Hunter, Dan Thirkell, Steve Bromley and Tom Goodwin. Also Simon Parkes although he didnt play at all last year. Only 7 players were involved on against Lancaster that were involved in our opening match against Droylsden.
Its not all about money, of course he is wealthy and this has been publicised, what isn’t often realised is how he earned that wealth and thats by being exceptional at making people think and work positively, thats where I believe his efforts will help me the most.
Enough of the stats, my point is that we have rebuilt this team and I am now putting my head on the block and have done in the press by saying I believe we are almost there, we have a squad capable of competing at this level and if we had this squad at the start of the season I believe we would be sat comfortably

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Railway Well Beaten by Brilliant Bamber A rampant Bamber Bridge proved too strong for Harrogate Railway last Tuesday night as they put five unanswered goals past Lee Ashforth’s men at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium.
It took just four second half minutes for Bamber to extend their lead and for the impressive Waddecar to complete his hat-trick as he headed home from a corner.
Lee Ashforth’s men could have taken the lead after six minutes when Vincent Dhesi found Dan Barrett with an accurate pull-back only for Lee Dovey to deny the striker with his feet.
Despite the one sided scoreline, Railway carried on working and almost got on the scoresheet through Barrett who showed a clean set of heels to his marker on the right wing before bending a left footed effort round the post.
Alastair Waddecar then gave his side a huge lift and the lead after 18 minutes as he picked up possession 30-yards out and arrowed an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.
Last season’s third placed team then had a goal chalked off after Matty Kay had found the back of the net with a curling effort, though Stewart’s view of the shot was severely impeded by an offside attacker and the goal was correctly ruled out.
Waddecar’s second was not as spectacular, but well taken nonetheless, as Tom Stewart’s punched clearance fell to Brig’s number seven who found the bottom corner with a first time volley.
Bamber claimed their fifth and final goal of the game In the 76th minute when substitute, Curtis Thompson, latched onto a wayward strike at goal and placed the ball into the corner.
After Simon Wood’s last ditch tackle was fractionally too late and sent Bamber’s attacker tumbling to the ground, a penalty was awarded which Jamie Milligan confidently placed the penalty to Stewart’s right and underneath the Railway stopper.
Barrett came close to restoring some pride for The Rail with a superb strike in the final minute of normal time that was matched by an equally special save from Bamber’s stopper.

WHO ARE WARRINGTON? Formed in 1949 by Jimmy Drinkwater, the club was initially named Stockton Heath Albion and competed in the Warrington and District League until 1953, when they moved to the Mid Cheshire League. Freddie Worrall became manager at the same time, and during a 13-year spell in charge, the club won the league in 1959–60 plus the League Cup in three consecutive seasons during the 1950s. During his thirteen years at the helm, Heath were one of the most feared sides in Cheshire football, winning a string of honours including the Mid Cheshire League Championship in 1959–60, the League Cup in 1953–54, 1954–55, 1955–56 and made several appearances in the Cheshire Amateur Cup Final. Several players from this successful period went on to join Football League clubs, including Ian Weir, John Green, Alan Foster and Roger Hunt, later a World Cup winner with England in 1966. At the club’s 1961 AGM, it was decided to change the name to Warrington Town. In 1978 the club were founder members of Division Two of the Cheshire County League. When it merged into the North West Counties Football League in 1982, the club were founder members of Division Three. They finished as runners-up in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. In 1985–86 Warrington reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, losing 6–3 to Halesowen Town in a replay.
After finishing as runners-up in Division Two in 1986–87, the club were promoted to Division One. In the same season they reached the FA Vase final, where they lost 3–2 to local rivals St Helens Town In 1989–90 Warrington Town won Division One, and were promoted to the Northern Premier League. In 1992–93 they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, eventually losing 2–1 at Sutton United, and also became the first Division One club to reach the final of the League Cup, losing on penalties to Winsford United. The season also saw the club sell Neil Whalley to Football League Third Division side Preston North End for a £25,000, equalling the record fee paid for a Northern Premier League player. A few weeks later Warrington also sold Liam Watson to Preston for a record £60,000. After finishing second bottom of the league in 1996–97, the club were relegated back to Division One of the North West Counties League. The following season they were relegated again. In the 1998–99 season, teenage striker Damien Whitehead set a new club record of 52 goals in just 42 appearances, before signing for Football League Division Three side Macclesfield Town at the end of the season. The 1999–2000 season saw Town win the Second Division Trophy beating Tetley Walker F.C (known as The Holden Final) 2–0 at Prescot Cables, with two goals from Neal Holden, whilst the following season saw Warrington win Division Two and earn promotion back to Division One. They finished fifth in 2003–04, and were promoted to Division One of the Northern Premier League as part of the restructuring that led to the creation of the Conference North and South. When Division One was split into northern and southern sections in 2007, the club were placed in the southern division, but were moved to the northern section the following season. In 2013–14 the club finished third in Division One North, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. However, they lost 1–0 at home to Bamber Bridge in the semi-finals. In 2014–15 the club reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history, where they beat League Two club Exeter City 1–0 with a 7th-minute header from defender and plasterer Craig Robinson, the brother of MK Dons manager Karl Robinson, in a giant-killing at Cantilever Park. The game was shown live on BBC Two. In the second round, Warrington lost 0–2 at Gateshead. Gateshead went on to play away to West Bromwich Albion. It had been a fantastic adventure that will live long in the memory. The cup success did have an effect on our league campaign as games in hand could
not be turned into sufficient points and we finished the season in ninth. However the season was nicely rounded off with a Doodson Sports Cup Final win over Farsley at Stockport County’s ground. Twenty years after our first final appearance in this competition also saw the game decided on penalties, but this time we won, the score being 3-2 after the game had ended 0-0 after ninety minutes. It was the club’s first silverware in fifteen years and the highest ranking tournament we have ever won. Points From the Past IT’S interesting how certain games can stick in your memory. I remember two pairs of fixtures very distinctly, both from the late sixties and in the old Yorkshire League… First of all, two games we played in the same season against Doncaster United. Their ground was on the old Doncaster Airport site and in this particular season they had been served notice to quit. We arrived there and were immediately directed to a pitch by the side of Doncaster Racecourse, wide open save for a few sticks and ropes to keep the crowd at bay. A bit like the Stray really. The game was very tight and our goal was one that never was. Thank goodness goal-line technology hadn’t been thought of – a shot from Tony Vincent struck the bar and the ball bounced down at least a foot in front of the goal but the ref gave it. He must have been sorry for us being led a bit of a wild goose chase in getting to the ground. Perhaps he’d been in the same situation. One-nil and let’s get back home before a recount. We won the home game by the same margin, again in a fortunate manner, the winner from a penalty which only the
referee must have known why it had been given. “Spot of pushing” we heard him say, and Kenny Fountain despatched the spot-kick very gratefully. If anything, we behind the goal thought it might have been the other way. It might have been the same season that we opened our home fixtures against newcomers Heeley Amateurs. They were from the Chesterfield area and travelled to Station View on a very sunny August day, but without a goalkeeper – he had been taken ill on the way. I think there may have been one substitute allowed then but there was no reserve ‘keeper so a small but lively full back took over between the posts. No mercy was offered, we won 10-0 and I had to convince my friends at work that there had been no misprint in the press. However, the away game was a different story. We arrived full of optimism after what had happened in the home game. The pitch was awful – “It wants forking” said our committee man Ivor Bottomley. You can imagine the replies he got! Sad to say we lost 2-0, and deservedly so.
