Welcome back to Station View Welcome back to Station View, and a happy new year to all, Today we entertain Prescott and we hope that there management team and all associated people have had a safe journey over the M62 for todays game. I remember the start to the season and my first foray into football management, Prescott started the season with 5 consecutive defeats that included an 8-0 against Trafford and I remember people telling me that they would finish bottom, I remember saying how can people possible judge after 5 games when budgets change and personal changes especially regarding a team that although often find themselves near the bottom that are so established in our league. Teams that are used to fighting for their lives know how to get results and claw themselves away from the bottom and Prescott have done just that. They have 24 points from 22 games which is more than a point a game, a target that we set ourselves back in August. They are achieving what I believe will have been a similar target for themselves, and its teams like Prescott that I have the most admiration for. They do it season after season with no budget and thats something we need to be aware of. Some teams buy their way out of trouble whereas others have to fight and scrap for every point. Full credit to Prescott and their staff. Our two games since my last notes were hugely contrasting, a 5-0 defeat at Witton when not only lack of games was evident but a second half performance certainly that was well below par and then after much discussion as a management team and a players meeting we went to Lancaster and were very unfortunate to come away losing 1-0. However, its two more defeats and two more games chalked off leaving us on 13 points from 20 games a fair bit behind my target at the start of the season. We have brought back Harry Coates from Harrogate Town and he was superb last year and I have tried several times this season to re-sign him and at last we have him back in our ranks. Lee’s View After todays game we are halfway through our season and it will be a time for reflection and to see if we replicate what we have done so far will we be enough to keep Harrogate Railway in the league, I would be a poor manager if I did not think that this was the case. I want to be a manager that keeps a settled team and a small group of players that we can work with throughout the year but we have had to have a rebuilding year and that was always going to mean that we changed the personal quite a lot as the season went on.
Enough of the stats, my point is that we have rebuilt this team and I am now putting my head on the block and have done in the press by saying I believe we are almost there, we have a squad capable of competing at this level and if we had this squad at the start of the season I believe we would be sat comfortably away from the relegation zone. However, I cannot keep using this excuse so the next ten games are important for us as a club, if we have a successful ten games we will have moved away from the relegation zone and we will be able to enjoy the final ten matches and plan for next season, if we struggle through the next ten games then we will have a tough ten matches to finish the season, we do have what people would class as a good run in though.
I have done this to improve the squad and the team and give us the best chance of not only being in this league next season but making us competitive. In the first squad of the season we had 7/16 remaining from last season so realistically we knew it was going to be hard. Against Lancaster only 4 players remain from last season, Laurance Hunter, Dan Thirkell, Steve Bromley and Tom Goodwin. Also Simon Parkes although he didnt play at all last year. Only 7 players were involved on Saturday that were involved in our opening match against Droylsden.
My feeling and I sincerely mean this is the squad now is good, its young and exciting and I believe we will get away from the relegation zone. Enjoy the game.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Albion Too Strong for Returning Railway Witton Albion ensured 2016 got off to a miserable start for Harrogate Railway as they put five unanswered goals past Lee Ashforth’s men at Wincham Park.

Debutant Chris Ovington almost made a dream start with his new club inside five minutes when Lawrance Hunter’s cross found its way to the striker at the back post only for Andy Firth to divert the ball behind.
Five minutes after the restart and Witton extended their advantage as Michael Brewster’s clever touch on the half-way line released Billy Reeves through on goal and in position to slot into the bottom right corner.
From the resulting corner, Ryan Sharrocks rose highest to head the ball over the goalkeeper only for a recovering Albion defender to clear off the line and deny Railway an early lead.
Rob Hopley then added a fourth for Witton after 67 minutes as he nodded Andrews’ lofted cross over the head of Tom Stewart and in. Macauley’s men were awarded a penalty five minutes later when Reeves embarked on a storming run past four Railway players and into the box, where he was brought down before being able to pull the trigger.
Witton then took the lead when, after Tom Stewart was penalised for handling just outside the area, Danny Andrews’ struck a free kick against Simon Parkes and into the path of Jay Matthews to poke home.
Andrews stepped up and struck the spot kick low down the middle to score his second and Witton’s fifth and final goal of the afternoon.

New Harrogate Railway signing Chris Ovington is highly regarded around Yorkshire football having been on the books at Leeds United as a youngster and playing for the likes of Farsley Celtic, Goole, Stocksbridge Park Steels and Ossett Town. With demand for the forward high, Railway boss Lee Ashforth was influential in bringing Ovington to Station View, with the attacker having shown great loyalty to former Ossett chief John Reed to stick with Town earlier in the season. The deal was eventually finalised just hours before the Yorkshire clubs’ abandoned clash in November, and the 25-year-old attacker reveals to ‘The View’ how the move came about. He said: “Harrogate Railway were interested in me earlier on in the season, but I showed loyalty to the Manager I had known for years. “As soon as the changeover at Ossett happened, and Ash wanted me, I thought it was time for a change and I decided to come. “I know Ash quite well, mainly through Nathan Cartman who I lived with when we were at Leeds United together. “Ash was definitely a big influence in me coming here, he kept asking me to come down and when a Manager shows that he wants you it makes you feel good and want to come and play for him.” Ovington has frustratingly had to wait over a month to pull on the Railway shirt and feature for Ash’s men due to a combination of suspension and postponements. The long awaited debut finally came at Witton Albion, and although the result was disappointing, Ovington’s second appearance at Lancaster showed signs why everyone at the club believes, Chris included, that Railway will have no trouble staying in the league. He added: “I just wanted to play, it had been a long time but finally the games are coming, I’m getting my match fitness up and the performances will come. “I’m looking forward playing here and staying in the league with Harrogate which I’m sure we will.

“I want to score goals, of course, but the main thing for the team is for us to stay in the league more than anything.” The attacker was a key part of the FC United squad that reached the second round of the FA Cup in 2010/11 and started both ties against eventual League One Champions Brighton and Hove Albion. More recently for The Rail against Lancaster, Ovington, playing just off Stephen Bromley, showed signs of why Ashforth was so keen to bring him to Station View. After the match, Railway’s new recruit took the time to identify some of his qualities and outline what he hopes to add to Railway’s squad. He said: “Reaching the second round of the FA Cup with FC United and playing on TV was a really good experience. “I like getting on the ball and making things happen; I am an attacking player and can play up top off the striker or out wide. “As long as I play and work hard for the team that’s the main thing. “I’m very confident that if we play like we did against Lancaster we won’t have a problem, we’ve just got to all stick together and we’ll be fine, I’m sure of it!”

WHO ARE PRECOTT CABLES? Prescot Football Club was formed in 1884 and the first organised game of Association Football ever played in Prescot took place against the second team of a local St Helens side, St Thomas. Prescot lost 3-1.After playing friendly games for the first five years, Prescot entered the Liverpool & District League in 1889. Prescot’s highest finishing position in that league was third in 1891-92, the year in which Prescot entered the FA Cup for the first time. A home game against Crewe Alexandra attracted 3,000 spectators to Prescot’s ‘Slacky Brow’ ground, where Prescot were beaten 7-1.

Prescot joined the Lancashire Alliance in 1895 and were champions in 18991900. The club finished bottom the following year but joined the higher standard Lancashire League for 1901-02. A ground dispute resulted in Prescot dropping out of the league in 1902-03 and Prescot FC was dormant until 1906 when an athletic and football ground was opened at Hope Street and Prescot Athletic FC, was formed. Prescot Athletic started in the St Helens & District League and won the championship in the first year, after which they joined the Liverpool League for
In 1928, the local expanding cable giants, BICC, donated a magnificent 1,000-seater stand (which was destroyed by fire in 1960) to the club.
Leagues were suspended in 1914 for the Great War and the post-war Prescot club dropped ‘Athletic’ from its name and joined the Lancashire Combination Liverpool Section. In their first season, 1918-19, Prescot finished runners-up to Tranmere Rovers but did not fare too well the following season and the club returned to the more locally-based Liverpool County Combination for the 1920-21 season and spent a further seven years in that league.
In what was clearly an early form of commercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables and the team colours became black and amber to commemorate a bit of local industrial history, as the first successful insulated cable drawn at Prescot was covered with black and amber paper. Prescot Cables joined the Lancashire Combination In 1928-29 and, in 1929,

applied to join the Football League Third Division (North), along with four other hopefuls. All the applicants failed, although one, Mansfield Town, was successful two years later. Prescot’s association with the Lancashire Combination lasted for almost 50 years, apart from a brief spell spent in the Cheshire County League in the 1930’s. Prescot’s only league championship was achieved in 1956-57. Prescot Cables changed its name to Prescot Town in 1964 but the club struggled and in 1975, it was voted out of the Lancashire Combination. Prescot Town joined the Mid-Cheshire League and won it at the first attempt. In 197879 they returned to the Cheshire County League, in Division Two, after an absence of 42 years. Prescot were Division Two champions the following season, with Accrington Stanley as runners-up. In 1980, the name of Prescot Cables was re-taken and in 1982, Cables became a member of the newly formed North West Counties League where they remained for 20 years. Prescot finished in the top 10 in NWCL Division One in all but one season since

1990 and, in 2001-02, the club had its most successful season for over two decades, winning the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Cup) and finishing as Division One runners-up, narrowly missing out on promotion to UniBond League Division One. However, Prescot went one better in 2002-03 and finished as champions of NWCL Division One to win promotion to the UniBond League Division One. For the season 2004-05, Prescot found themselves playing at the highest level in their history. Due to a suitable finishing position, and the re-organisation of the football pyramid, Prescot took their place in the Unibond Premier Division. As a result of a team unable to forfill their fixtures, and after the controversial intervention of the FA, Cables were elevated to 5th position in the league. For the season 2005-06, it was a case of consolidation with a new football committee being formed from the Supporters Club. On the final game of the 2007/08 campaign, Prescot was 15 minutes from relegation. Two late goals secured a win at Lincoln United and survival. The current football club are working on ground improvements in order to provide the team and supporters with an opportunity to move forward. A dreadful 2008/09 season saw Prescot propping up the Premier Division. Manager Andy Gray departed for Burscough. He was replaced by Joe Gibiliru who embarked on a fresh start with player personnel. Joe managed to bring some much needed stability to the club as the team finished in mid table. 2010 saw some of Cables regular performers leave for pastures new and
several fresh faces arrive. Gibiliru was relieved of his duties around the time of the big freeze in December 2010 and assistant Dave Ridler took over. He managed to secure Cables Evo-Stik league status for another season. The 2011-12 season was a tale of five managers. Dave Ridler (who left for Australia in January 2012), Karl Bell, Karl Connolly all took charge for at least one match. Following the controversial departure of Shaun Reid to Warrington Town in March, Joe Gibiliru took over for the remaining games. The team and club re-grouped after the Reid fiasco to finish the season strongly to defy the odds and remain part of the Evo-Stik League. David Powell was the new man in charge for the 2012-13 season. A virtually new squad assembled with inconsistent performances and results as a consequence. The playing surface and weather conditions forced many postponements. When matches finally began in earnest in the New Year, Cables produced one of their most successful periods since the 2003 North West Counties campaign. A scheme asking donators to sponsor a pitch square in order to afford the much needed renovation the pitch, took on a life of its own. In the end the scheme became over subscribed. Circumstances arose that led to David Powell leaving the club. In his place for the 2014-15 season came Neil Prince, who at 31, must be the youngest manager in Cables history and probably in the current Evo-Stik League. With limited resources the team managed to secure their Evo-Stik status.

Points From the Past NOWADAYS all our league results, and other league results, are available at the tips of our thumbs. We’ve never had it so good. I recall Harold Macmillan telling us that in the early 1960’s.
At the conclusion of our game on a Saturday we had to phone our result through to Gosney’s News agency in Leeds and they would distribute the scores to the Sunday papers. Our result sheet had to be with the league secretary by Tuesday.
But, back then, getting hold of the stories behind the games was a much more complicated, yet much more exciting, operation. You have to remember that, back then, a telephone was a luxury. No fax, no mobile phones, no internet, just ordinary phones. Those, coupled with pen and paper, perhaps a typewriter if you were lucky, were all we had to communicate with the rest of the fraternity.
Ah but, the amazing part of the deal was via the Evening Post “Green Sports” paper, an extra issue which was printed at tea-time on Saturdays and available to buy in Harrogate just after six o’clock. The newsagents stayed open until the delivery van came round, the ink had hardly tine to dray. Itcontained the full Leeds United report together with other local games and, if we got access to a phone at half-time, a report of our match in the Yorkshire League. The brief was 100 words at half-time and the final score immediately after the game had ended.
At the start of the game team sheets had to be handed in to the referee. That hasn’t changed. But we could sign on a new player, as long as it was not a transfer, just before the kick-off provided the referee witnessed the signatures of player and the club representative, usually our secretary.
It was up to the home club to supply all the information, like it is today. As most of our away trips involved going through Leeds past the Quarry Hill Flats (the West Yorkshire Playhouse is there now) we stopped and bought about twenty copies of the “Green Post” from a little kiosk near to where the City Bus Station is now.
During the second half of a home firstteam match a man selling the Yorkshire Evening Post (it was a proper evening paper then) came round and we bought a copy just to read the half-time scores from the Football League in the ‘stop press’ column at the bottom of the front page. If we were losing, the mood was lifted slightly if Leeds United were winning. At twenty past four it was amazing how many copies were sold, considering we would hear the final scores on “Sports Report” about forty minutes later.
We were able to read about our game before we got home. Nothing short of a miracle without the wonders of modern science.
