Welcome back to Station View Welcome to Station View and I hope that you have had good Christmas and we can now bring some festive cheer for you, We welcome Simon Garner and his team from Clitheroe. Clitheroe are a club that I admire greatly, I have always had some good conversations with the chairwoman Ann and her husband and I really like the way that they have taken Clitheroe forward since they have been in the Evostick league. I have had a lot of conversations with Simon throughout this season and I also like to listen to his father Carl Garner, these two have a tremendous amount of experience in these leagues and above and I always take an interest in their comments on social media in particular. Simon has built a team based on youth and its interesting that people have said to me that a young aged team will struggle in this division. Simon is proving that wrong as he has built a team that is now pushing for the play offs, it has taken him a couple of seasons to get it right and thats why I want to stick to my own beliefs that we have a young squad that can push on as a group of players. I will look forward to chatting to Simon and Carl and hope they enjoy their day today. We are continually putting in some good performances and not getting anything from the games and that was evident in the Ossett Albion game, everyone agreed that we deserved something from the game but we once again shot ourselves in the foot with some poor errors and that cost us. We cannot keep using the same excuse however, and we now need to pick up some points before we find ourselves in trouble. Leeâ€™s View A period of stability happened lead by Alan Smith and Chris Parkes working hard to secure the club and then Nigel returned and the rebuilding work both on and off the pitch continued.

I still believe that we have a squad more than capable of competing in this league and the fixtures could have been kinder. That excuse wont rub anymore however if we do not win in what are all becoming cup finals in themselves.

It has been an eventful year to say the least and thats the joy of football clubs.

This will be the final home game of 2015, and I think you will have enjoyed what you have seen over the year.

On a personal note, my drive and determination has never wavered, although I have questioned my sanity on more than one occasion!!

It started back in January with Nathan Cartman signing for Darlington and a push for the play offs that realistically was probably always out of reach certainly when we lost our 30 goal striker.

I love being a football manager and its something I have worked towards of all my adult life, more importantly I love this club, I love the people around it and I do not want to let any of you down in anyway, thats why I will continue to drive this club forward to the best of my ability and will keep us in the evostick league and build over the coming years.

Then Billy Miller leaving in the summer that came as a shock to many, and the appointment of myself as First Team Manager. Nigel Corner then resigning as Chairman and the club having a bit of a change of committee members including Ann Kirk coming in as the new club secretary.

I look forward to seeing you in the bar after the match for a festive drink, have a good new year.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Seven Wins For Ossett Albion The in-form visitors raced to a three goal lead inside the first 25 minutes with Rob Bordman notching his 11th and 12th league goals of the season and Captain Danny South heading in off the post.

The hosts threatened an immediate response when Lawrance Hunter found space to shoot inside the box but dragged his effort wide of the far post. Bordman then made Railway pay for not taking the chance as he again latched onto a long ball from the back before rounding Goodwin and rolling into an empty net.

Jack Stockdill’s low finish six minutes later gave Harrogate hope but, although unlucky not to further reduce the lead before the break, Railway couldn’t break down a disciplined Ossett side.

Richard Tracey’s men added a third on 24 minutes through Captain Danny South who beat Goodwin in the air from a long free kick to nod in off the post.

Lee Ashforth handed Vincent Dhesi a first start since the attacker sustained a hamstring injury against Northwich Victoria back in October.

Although three goals down, Railway persistently looked to play on the deck and the approach paid off when Dan Thirkell slid a pass into the feet of Stockdill who quickly created an angle and fired into the bottom right corner.

Railway couldn’t have wished for a worse start on their return to action as a fairly innocuous clearance in the third minute was missed by Nathaniel Pells, allowing Bordman to race through on goal and lift the ball over Tom Goodwin.

The hosts sensed another goal, and almost got it, when Ryan Sharrocks sprinted down the right wing and delivered a low cross that was

spilled by Bartt Souter at the near post, only to be deflected back into the grateful ‘keeper’s arms before Dhesi could apply the finishing touch. With under ten minutes to go until the break, Sharrocks again caused havoc on the right, this time crossing towards Stockdill whose finish was well blocked by a covering defender. Stockdill was at the heart of most of Railway’s good play and almost found a second goal in spectacular fashion as his overhead kick attempt from the edge of the area dropped just over the crossbar. Railway came close to setting up a frantic end to the game in the 58th minute when a delightful Dhesi back-heel allowed Will Peers to send a shot goalwards from outside the box, although Souter made a good diving save to maintain his teams two goal advantage. The month without a game then began to show as Railway tired and Ossett became more dominant, with Goodwin needed to save Luke Porritt’s powerful effort headed for his top right corner.

WHO ARE CLITHEROE? The club was formed as Clitheroe Central in 1877 at the Swan Hotel in Castle Street by local businessmen. After playing in local leagues, the club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and dropped Central from their name. Aside from breaks during the First and Second World Wars, the club continued to play in the Combination until the end of the 1981-82 season, when it combined with the Cheshire League to become the North West Counties League. Success had been sparing prior to that date, with a Lancashire Junior Cup win in 1893, the Lancashire Combination Cup in 1934-5 and the League Championship in 1979-80 all that the club had to show for its efforts. That was soon to change. Although Clitheroe were put into the Third Division of the NWCFL at its inception due to the state of the ground, there followed the most successful period in the club’s long history under the stewardship of Eric Whalley, subsequently manager and Chairman of Accrington Stanley FC. He assembled one of the best non league sides in the North of England and won back to back Championships in the Third, Second and First divisions, as well as securing the Lancashire

Cup for the first time in 50 years, thanks to a solitary strike from local lad Eric Geldard. It was not until the mid nineties that the Club recovered from this setback and started to fulfil its potential and not only to become a force in the NWCFL Division 1 again, but also to make itself known on the national FA Vase stage. Possibly the highlight of the club’s history came when the Blues reached the Vase Final under the joint managership of Dennis Underwood and Gary Butcher after an epic two legged semi Final win against Mangotsfield of Bristol. 2,000 people were on Shawbridge for the second leg when a deflected goal saw the Blues home with seven minutes of extra time remaining. The Final pitted the Blues against a powerful Brigg side and a 3-0 reverse in front of 7,500 fans was a fair reflection of the play. At the same time, some £130,000 was being spent on the ground, with the sale of Jon Penman to Southport and Carlo Nash to Crystal Palace (within one month of the Vase final) helping considerably. The Wembley experience turned the Blues into a Vase side and a Quarter Final defeat against Tiverton

in 1998/99 and a two leg reverse against Taunton in the 2000/01 semi final gave the Blues national prominence. The Taunton season was memorable for a number of reasons. Beating the pre tournament favourites Chippenham in the quarter final on their own patch in front of 1,500 fans was notable enough. However the two legged semi against Taunton Town would never be forgotten. With the first leg away and the game only just surviving an absolute deluge, the Blues went in at half time 5-0 down and reduced to 10 men. There was not much good humour amongst the 150 travelling Blues over that cup of Bovril. No further goals followed, but with manager Dave Burgess throwing caution to the wind in the home second leg, the fans dared to dream with 3 goals for the home side in the first 15 minutes (including hitting the post) and the Taunton keeper being stretchered off, but in the end Clitheroe went down 8-4 on aggregate. The 2000-01 season was also notable for the Blues finishing as league runners up to Bradford PA in controversial circumstances , before Dave Burgess stood down and central defender Lee Sculpher took over as player manager. In 2002/3,

Clitheroe again finished as league runners up and lost to Mossley at Gigg Lane in the League Cup Final. Early cup exits the following season enabled the Blues to concentrate on the league and superb away form saw the Blues capture the 2003/04 league title on the final day of the season at Nantwich where Blues legend Neil Reynolds sparked bedlam when he thumped a 25 yarder into the top corner with six minutes of the season remaining. Tommy Lawson was appointed manager for the 2005/06 season but he was relieved of his duties in early 2006, to be replaced on a temporary basis by Mark Smitheringale. He too left before the 2006/07 season started and his assistant Chris Stammers stepped up to the plate before resigning after a 10-1 thumping away to Conference North Kettering in the FA Trophy in November 2006. The then chairman Carl Garner offered the job to Neil Reynolds and Pete Smith at the turn of 2007, before the latter took on the role in his own right at the end of the 2008/09 season. 2009/10 and 2010/11 saw Clitheroe finishing in eight and sixth respectively, the highest league placings in the club’s history. The end of the 10/11 season also had a unique twist with Carl Garner stepping down as chairman after four years to replace Pete Smith as manager, in the process going unbeaten throughout April and taking the manager of the month prize. Garner was replaced in the role of chair by his long standing deputy Anne Barker. Despite the great end to the previous campaign, the 2011/12 season under Garner’s leadership was ultimately disappointing, although it had started so brightly with an early manager of the month award. Form quickly tailed off and huge player turnover ensued, before Garner resigned and

the managerial Vase duo of Burgess and Sculpher ensured survival on a temporary basis, having taken over with less than 10 games to go. Paul Moore, the ex Leek Town and Warrington Town manager, took over the reins in 2012/13 and led Clitheroe to their record points total in Division 1 in finishing eighth, with the play-off push only ending over the final games of the season. However, the loss of key players in the close season led to a woeful start in 2013/14 and to an early exit from the FA Cup and Trophy, and the committee replaced Moore with ex Blue Simon Garner, who was taking his first step on the managerial ladder. Garner and his assistant, another ex Blue Ryan Parr, finished in 17th position that season, but set their stall out in 2014-15 to create a more east Lancashire focussed team with key assets secured on contract. A 13th place finish, with victories against many of the top sides, and an appearance at the Reebok in the Lancashire Trophy against Chorley represented good progress and the duo will be looking to kick on from there in 2015-16. Off the pitch, chair Anne Barker has overseen the incorporation of the club as a limited company, the renewal of the ground lease and the replacement of the clubhouse, changing rooms and toilet block at a cost of over £100K. The club also reintroduced a Youth team in 2014-15, which play in the Lancashire Sunday League. They won their league cup and finished runners up in their first season under Tom Bartlett’s guidance, and have not only provided players for the first team, but have also reinforced the club’s links to the town and the Clitheroe Wolves set up.

CLITHEROE PLAYER PROFILES Simon Garner Player manager. 32 year old left sided midfielder, with a distinguished pedigree at the highest level of non-league. Numbers Fleetwood, Halifax, Stalybridge, FC United and Chorley amongst his previous clubs. Started his playing career at Clitheroe as a 19 year old, having two other return spells. One of the famous Clitheroe team away at Shepshed. Putting his first foot on the managerial ladder.

Danny Brady Danny joined Clitheroe in early 2014. Danny is a centre half who is equally as comfortable at right back or holding midfielder. Danny who lives in Haslingden, has all the attributes you would want in a defender, he is strong and quick with good leadership qualities. Initially, making the step up from local leagues, Danny was hampered by suspension and then injury, but he showed last season that he was more than capable of plying his trade at Evo-Stik level and at 27 years old we have only just scraped the surface of what he is capable of.

Ryan Parr Assistant manager. No nonsense centre back, who came to Clitheroe from Great Harwood Town, before moving to Fleetwood for a spell. Came out of retirement to play at Shepshed.

James Heywood A right back who left Clitheroe for a fee to help Fylde gain promotion from Division 1. An accomplished defender, he loves nothing more than linking up with the attackers, and after a season’s lay off due to work, he is now back working in the area and raring to go.

Ben Woodhead 23 year old stopper, recently signed on contract from Nelson. The managers had been tracking him for 18 months, and his presence has already lifted the back 4. Callum Jakovlevs A product of Burnley’s thriving Academy, the 19 year old joined the Blues in March of last season after a short spell with Bacup. He has already impressed with his handling and positional sense. Wes Benjamin Young full back recently signed from Squires Gate. Has settled in well on the right after a tough debut at New Mills and looks to overlap going forward whenever he can. Brendan Barski 21 year old signed from Colne. A centre back who can operate in the centre of attack as well, he will be looking to make his breakthrough at this level, with the full backing of the managers.

Tom Murphy 23 year old left back signed from Padiham. His displays against the Blues last season caught the manager’s eye. Tom offers plenty of experience at this level despite his youth and he is sure to want to impress. James Walker 24 year old James signed for Clitheroe from AFC Blackpool in November 2013. A left sided player, he is equally as comfortable in defence as he is in midfield. James has a superb left foot and plays the game with great intelligence. James is one of football’s nice guys and is a great asset to Clitheroe Football Club. James has the ability and the attitude to be plying his trade higher up the football leagues.

CLITHEROE PLAYER PROFILES Scott Harries 24 year old flying winger, signed from Northwich Vics after an 18 month spell there. Has suffered with injuries earlier in his career but is now looking to make up for lost time and to add to his growing goal tally.

Ryan Cattermole Last season’s Clitheroe FC youth team skipper, previously on Accrington’s books. Left sided player, he improved leaps and bounds last season and proved to be a real asset in the middle of the park. One to watch for the future.

Robert Bonaminio Baggio is a local lad who lives in Blackburn and works in Clitheroe. He was part of the Bamber Bridge squad that narrowly missed out on promotion in 2013-14. Comfortable in midfield, he is starting to make the centre back position his own.

Scott Bakkor 21 year old re-signed for his second spell at the club after being sold to Witton Albion, where he then moved to Skelmersdale. The complete striker, he has pace, skill and an eye for goal, and can play anywhere up front. .

David Lynch David signed for Clitheroe in June 2014 after spending the 2013/14 season playing in the Conference North with Workington. David was immediately signed on a contract and was a huge statement of intent from the club signing someone of David’s pedigree.

Jonny Hession 21 year old winger signed in the close season from Nelson. Slight of build but with a killer turn of pace, he adds an extra dimension to the Blues’ attacking options.

David is an intelligent, left footed centre midfielder with good experience, a good engine and who very rarely loses possession of the football. David has professional experience with Burnley FC. Ross Dent A Clitheroe lad, Ross is the longest serving player at only 21 A combative central midfielder, who is tenacious in the tackle, has a non-stop engine and a never say die spirit who also has an eye for goal. Ross has a great, positive attitude and was both Players’ and Fans’ Player of the Year last season.

Louis Mayers 22 year old, back for his second spell at Shawbridge since leaving four years ago. Out and out striker, who adds physical presence and an eye for goal to the team. Michael Hampson 19 year old striker signed from Stockport. Comfortable as a target man or operating on the right flank. Sefton Gonzales After a brief spell at Stockport, the talismanic striker is back and already amongst the goals. At 6ft 3, he is a handful for any defender and his hold up play makes him a dream teammate.

Points From the Past THERE have been many changes in our little bit of Starbeck since I first became connected with Harrogate Railway. Mam, Dad and me used to come over from Grosmont, near Whitby, in the mid-tolate 1950’s for holidays and stay with my auntie and uncle who lived in the house on the High Street, opposite the shops. It was number 33A actually, now part of the old people’s flats.

closely you will see that the uprights to which the metal sheets are attached are old railway lines, bent into shape to also act as supports for the roof. On the ‘top side’ of the ground was an old stand and the limited terracing was made from old railway sleepers. That stand was eventually taken down before it fell down and is the site of the current ‘Shaun Glennon Stand’.

In fact, my Uncle Mick (Moore) was secretary of the club and my Auntie Gladys ran the canteen on the ground for many years. When we came to live in Starbeck in 1960 the engine sheds on the other side of the railway line had just closed but there was still a large marshalling yard and coal depot on the right as you turn into Station View. The sidings stretched all the way down to the ground and were always full of railway goods vans and trucks.

The old ‘Dagger’ was doubled in size at the beginning of the sixties. Before it was enlarged, the way into the clubhouse was via a small wooden porch along the side of the building. This was made redundant when the new entrance was built and became our dugout on the ‘bottom side’ of the ground. Not very big, but in those days there weren’t any substitutes so it only had to house the two trainers and a couple of buckets of water with wet sponges. No managers then, the committee picked the team.

Our ground actually looked a bit like a railway station as the players’ changing rooms, snack bar and utility rooms were housed in four old railway passenger carriages which were situated end to end along the bottom side. In the early sixties we did have a PA of sorts, housed in one of those carriages, but just for music. Harry Wood was in charge normally and we used to take our favourite new records in to him to play over the loudspeakers.

By the way, if you’ve never heard of Grosmont, my home village, it’s now one of the major hubs of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It houses the junction of the NYMR with the main line from Middlesbrough to Whitby, complete with sidings and engine sheds. Funny how things turn around.

Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.

Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.

The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.

Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.

In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.

However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.

Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.

The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.

A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.

2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.

Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.

Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.
