Welcome back to Station View We welcome Ossett Albion today and I think we should congratulate them on their team of the month award and for their current play off position. I spent 18 months at Albion as a player and as part of the management team alongside Eric Ghilcrist and at the time Mark Ryan. It was a great learning curve for me and my first step into management. It was an extremely good step at the time for me and I dont think I have ever thanked Eric and I should have so this is your thank you Eric!! Richard Treacy has built his team over the past three seasons and has now established Ossett as a major force, exchanging places with Ossett Town who have normally been the higher of the two clubs, it shows that they are a club moving in the right direction and they have some very good players throughout the team, some who I have played with or against. Rob Boardman, Nicky Matthews are two great strikers and I contacted them both pre-season to find out their plans. Also the chairman Dominic Riordan, I played in the same team as him and he’s always been a top player along with his brother James in and around these leagues. It will be good to catch up with them all today. I think I need to revisit the Ossett Town game in our last match here at Station View and for 45 minutes of football a lot went on! Realistically the game shouldn’t have started, the pitch was fine at 12.30 but rain in the two hours before kick off saturated the playing area and I think the referee got it wrong by starting the game. We then took a 3-0 lead so to then get called off at half-time hurt just a little. However, I never complained to the referee as I felt he was correct in his decision, if the score had been 0-0 no one would have complained. Lee Ashforth Manager, Harrogate Railway

Leeâ€™s View The disappointing parts of the game were Dan Barretts red card and the skirmish before half-time.

Before the game against Ossett Town we signed Chris Ovington from them. I tried to sign Chris a few months ago and he decided to stay loyal to the manager John Reed.

Dan was a bit silly and he knows it and now will suffer as he wont play again until the 28th December at the earliest, a hard lesson learnt for a player who had just broke into the starting 11.

I totally respect that, he stayed and played for John and put in over 50 appearances for Ossett. Chris will add some experience to the squad being 25 years old and having played for Leeds United and at this level for a while.

The skirmish just before half-time was not great, but from a positive if there was one, it was the togetherness and support that my players have for each other and that is something that I dont want to take away from them.

I am sure he will fit into the squad and I hope that when clubs come knocking as I believe they will that I will have earned the same respect that made him refuse to leave John Reed.

In the aftermath of the game, both the press and opposition had a bit of a go at my players and certainly one or two individuals.

We also signed Marcus Day from Harrogate Town, I saw Marcus play in the county cup against Brighouse and asked Simon Weaver about his availability, he said we could have him and he will be an exciting prospect if he produces the kind of performance he did against a good Brighouse team that night.

I wont go into too much detail as its now gone, but I will back my players totally and will continue to do so, if they cross the line then I will deal with it, they know this. This group of players is nothing short of amazing to work with and I spend a large amount of my week dealing with keeping them happy, they offer me the same level of commitment in return for limited expenses, this is why it angers me when others choose social media or shouting abuse from ten yards away knowing players cant react.

I am 17 league games into my managerial career at this club and I have loved every minute, I think the club is getting things right and so are we as a management team, we are learning and learning fast, I think every home game you have stood and clapped us off, long may that continue and we gain some points for your support,

This is why I love this club and you as supporters, we dont have that from anyone and I have only ever had full backing from anyone that supports this club.

Finally, I hope you all have a great Christmas and an even better new year!

Them that know me will know that I deal with this issues and I will continue to do so, this way the name of Harrogate Railway is kept at a premium in footballing circles.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway Through and Through Simon Parkes has been involved with Harrogate Railway for almost as long as he can remember, from the age of five in fact!

The 25-year-old is a popular character at Station View, partially due to his full throttle style of play and ability on the ball.

With the passion he has for the club, Parkes will have been pleased to see Harrogate Railway record their best ever finish last season as they placed eighth in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North.

A local lad playing for their local team is becoming increasingly rare in modern football, and Parkes reflects fondly on rising up the Railway ranks.

It was mixed emotions for the 25-year-old, however, who spent 18 months on the sidelines following a serious knee injury suffered against South Shields in an FA Cup tie.

He said: “I’ve got really good memories of coming through the ranks here, playing at Elland Road and getting to the County Cup final.

Long injury lay-offs can be difficult times for any sportsmen, but Parkes is now back fit and has made 13 starts for The Rail this season at the time of writing.

“Coming from a footballing background, to break into the first team when I was about 17 was good and I’ve been in and around it ever since.

He added: “Sadly I wasn’t a massive part of last season due to injury, but I was always in and around it and the team did a really good job.

“I live in Harrogate and I understand the

“It’s a recurring injury that has meant I have gone through knee surgery three times over the last five years so it’s pretty much stable now. “It’s been lots of rehab, lots of physio work making sure that the muscles in and around the knee are a lot more stable and preventing any sort of further injury. “This season has been partly about making sure I’m fit and healthy all the way through and getting to match level fitness throughout the season.” The majority of Parkes’ appearances this season have come in a newly adopted position of right back, despite having played in central midfield in his younger years. Known for his tough tackling, Parkes has managed to retain the strength of his game as he has adapted to the full back position, despite the obvious differences between the two.

WHO ARE OSSETT ALBION? Ossett Albion Football Club originated in 1944 when a group of schoolboys decided to form a team to play in the local football leagues in and around the Heavy Woollen area covering mainly Ossett, Dewsbury and Batley. In those early days they could hardly have envisaged that 71 years later their Club would still be going strong and competing in the higher echelons of Non League football. A football club having its origins during the Second World War is not unique to Ossett Albion but it is obviously a fairly rare occurrence. Since its formation and humble beginnings the Club has eventually achieved its long term aim and ambition of Northern Premier League football and now finds itself in the fourth tier of Non League clubs in the whole of England. Surely few of those schoolboy founders of the Club, of whom

Jack Ingham is the only surviving person, could have predicted back then what would become of their germ of an idea and where the Club would be 71 years on. Progress throughout their history has been steady and measured and at all times sustainability, at whatever level of the game they were competing, has been very much the order of the day. There has never been a “boom and bust” mentality within the organisation and successive Committees and administrations have always followed the tried and tested methods of moving the Club forward while always operating strictly within its means. While progressing steadily through the various leagues on their climb up to their current position within the National League System, Albion established a strong reputation locally and particularly in cup competitions with plenty of silverware to show for

their efforts along the way. Although we have yet to see the name of Ossett Albion in the draw for the 1st Round proper of the FA Challenge Cup the Club have reached the 4th Qualifying Round on several occasions only to fall at the final hurdle. This feat remains one of the Club’s major aspirations. The Club also experienced a good deal of success in the FA Vase competition but fortunes since competing in the FA Trophy have been less impressive. Three West Riding County Cup wins in the mid-sixties and four in all were instrumental in promoting Ossett Albion’s reputation over a wider area of the county. Winning the Yorkshire League Cup twice in successive seasons followed by victories in the Northern Counties East League Cup on two occasions all enhanced Albion’s cup pedigree

and made them a real force to be reckoned with. In among they also lifted the Yorkshire League Division 1 championship trophy in 1974/1975 and the Northern Counties East League Premier Division titles in 1998/1999 and again in 2003/2004. Albion realised their ultimate goal of promotion to the Northern Premier League at the end of season 2000/2001 though survival at this level lasted only the one campaign before suffering relegation back to the Northern Counties East League from whence they came. They regained their Northern Premier League status for the 2005/2006 season and 20015/2016 will be their 12th consecutive one in this league. The Club are run by a group of Directors and Committee several of whom have been the backbone of the organisation for many years and they are now led by a newly appointed Chairman in Dominic Riordan. Dominic had a couple of spells as a player in Ossett Albion colours before taking on the role of Chairman and at 29 he is one of, if not the youngest, Chairmen at this level of the game. Having turned out for the first team on numerous occasions last season and, still a registered player, he is quite possibly the only Player/Chairman at

this level of the game. After a few years of battling relegation at the wrong end of the league table it is the Chairmanâ€™s aim to introduce new ideas and initiatives in order to take Albion to the next level or at the very least establish the team as a competitive outfit capable of finishing in the middle to higher positions in the table. The group of long-serving Committee men are used to seeing players spend much of their careers with Albion most notably Peter Eaton and Nigel Yarrow who played respectively over 800 and 600 games for the Club and are still involved in one capacity or another. As well as progress on the field of play the next immediate phase of Albionâ€™s history will see the Club looking to embark on a series of ambitious projects to further develop the ground and infrastructure. It has long been felt that the facilities are in need of up-dating but limited financial resources have always proved a stumbling block. OSSETT ALBION PLAYER PROFILES Brett Souter Goalkeeper – Promising young goalkeeper, now in his second season at the club. Signed from Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

Danny South Defender – Danny signed during the close season having had a short spell at the club last term. He is a proven striker at NPL level but is currently enjoying the Central defender role.

Steven Nicholson Defender – An experience defender who for a number of years captained Emley FC. He is also a former manager of Wakefield FC. Steve is now in his fourth season with Albion.

James Riley Defender – James was signed in October from Farsley Celtic. A no nonsense defender he has also played for Bradford Park Avenue, FC Halifax Town, Harrogate Railway and Thackley.

Declan Dawson Defender – Declan signed midway through last season from Liversedge and made his first team at Bamber Bridge. Dec is a member of our current U19 squad who is pushing for a permanent first team slot.

Rikki Paylor Midfield – A product of Ossett Albion’s U19 squad, Rikki returned to the club towards the end of last season having had spells at a number of NCE clubs including Barton Town OB, Bridlington Town and Hall Road Rangers. Has worked his way back into the first team squad following a loan spell at Parkgate FC.

Ross Hardaker Defender/Midfield – Signed from Wakefield FC, Ross impressed at left back last season and made the number 3 shirt his own. Also scored a couple of spectacular goals.

Gibril Bojang Winger/Striker – Gibril has signed from local club Horbury Town and has scored some spectacular goals in pre season. Has had NCE League experience with Liversedge.

Kieran Thompson Defender – Another promising youngster signed during the summer. Kieran was released by Chesterfield at the end of last season and has had an impressive pre season.

Tom Claisse Midfield – Tom is a talented midfielder snapped up by manager Richard Tracey following his departure from Tadcaster Albion. He also has experience with Bradford Park Avenue, Whitby Town, Goole and Ossett Town.

Wesley Milnes Defender – An experienced defender who is now in his third season at Ossett Albion. Has played for Farsley, Wakefield, Ossett Town and Frickley.

Has also been on the books of Bradford City & Everton and has spent time on loan at Tranmere Rovers. Talent Ndlovu Midfield – A young midfielder currently on dual registration with Guiseley. Talent has also played for Silsden in the North West Counties League. Made his debut as a substitute, against Witton Albion. Luke Porritt Midfield – 19 year old Luke is currently on short term loan from Guiseley. Made his debut at Kendal Town recently. Nicky Matthews Striker – Nicky joined Ossett Albion last season from NCE club Thackley and quickly established himself in the squad. Was last season’s Players Player of the Year.

Adam Muller Striker – Adam is an experienced striker who has also played for Worksop Town, Guiseley, Ilkeston Town, Eastwood Town, Farsley & Buxton. Robert Bordman Striker – Rob returns to the club from Nostell MW were he was the leading scorer last season. He is a prolific striker and has scored goals wherever he has played. Connor Brunt Striker – Young striker now in his third season at the club. Originally signed from Hallam FC. Connor broke into the first team towards the end of last season and scored a couple of vital goals. Has also represented England Colleges. Connor Bower Striker – Connor has rejoined the club following a short spell at Harrogate Town. He was last season’s leading scorer.

Points From the Past WHAT was happening at Harrogate Railway fifty years ago? Well, we were back in the second division of the Yorkshire League after a brief one-year foray in the top level. We had won promotion in the year I left school and started my first job, at ICI Fibres, which is now Hornbeam Park. Some of the original buildings are still in use, mainly by the Harrogate College, but TDD, the one in which I worked, has sadly since been demolished. Never mind.

charge, but the game at their place was a sporting one which ended in a 3-3 draw, and had it not been for a magnificent save by the Mexborough ‘keeper late on, we would have won. We eventually finished third from bottom, above Brodsworth and Hull Brunswick – promotion and relegation was decided by a four-up four down system in those days. Well, back in division two and an away game at Swallownest (in the Sheffield area) to start us off. A bad day, getting hopelessly lost on the way and arriving at what would have been half-time. On the way we’d passed a pub with lots of police officers and blood around. It must have been some punch-up. The game was horrible and we lost 2-1. No more to be said.

The previous season in the first division was a tough one, some of the highlights being a 2-1 home victory over Farsley Celtic, doing the double over fellow promotion-winners Brodsworth (6-2 at home and 4-1 away) and a resounding 6-1 demolishing of Bridlington Trinity (now no longer in existence but high-flyers at the time) at Station View near the end of the campaign.

Although our season finished up with us in mid-table, there were several memorable games including a 10-0 (yes, ten) home win over Heeley Amateurs, a 1-0 triumph at Harrogate Town, who were still semi-professional at the time, in the Yorkshire League Cup and a victory over Guiseley, after a replay, in the West Riding County Cup. They were then below us in the West Yorkshire League. Look at them now. A 2-2 draw at Nethermoor was followed by a fine 5-2 win here in the return.

Lowlights were a double defeat against Harrogate Town (1-0 away, former Railway player Graham Shepherd scoring Town’s winner in his first game for them, and 2-0 here) and a 7-0 thumping at Wombwell (near Barnsley) who went on to win the league. Their home ground had a go-kart track at one end which, as you might imagine, attracted more attention from us as the match went on. We lost 3-0 at home to Mexborough Town in a somewhat feisty encounter and the away match was the following week. We suggested that ‘Tiny’ Carr (a popular wrestling referee at the time) should take

Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.

Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.

The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.

Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.

In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.

However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.

Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.

The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.

A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.

2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.

Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.

Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.
