LEE’S VIEW Welcome back to Station View, We welcome Trafford today and their manager Tom Baker and his team. I watched Tom in his playing days at FC Halifax as I was running the community football there in the time he played and still do. He was always a player who put in 110% in every performance and I know he was well respected by the supporters and people around the club. He has taken that attitude into his management and I have watched Trafford a few times throughout the season and they always show a great desire throughout a game. We must not only match that but better it today against a team that will likely still believe and rightly so that they can make the play offs in a very open league. I think I need to revisit the Ossett Town game in our last match here at Station View and for 45 minutes of football a lot went on! Realistically the game shouldn’t have started, the pitch was fine at 12.30 but rain in the two hours before kick off saturated the playing area and I think the referee got it wrong by starting the
game. We then took a 3-0 lead so to then get called off at half-time hurt just a little. However, I never complained to the referee as I felt he was correct in his decision, if the score had been 0-0 no one would have complained. The disappointing parts of the game were Dan Barretts red card and the skirmish before half-time. Dan was a bit silly and he knows it and now will suffer as he won’t play again until the 28th December at the earliest, a hard lesson learnt for a player who had just broke into the starting 11. The skirmish just before half-time was not great, but from a positive if there was one, it was the togetherness and support that my players have for each other and that is something that I dont want to take away from them. In the aftermath of the game, both the press and opposition had a bit of a go at my players and certainly one or two individuals. I won’t go into too much detail as it’s now gone, but I will back my players totally and will continue to do so, if they cross the line then I will deal with it, they know this. This group of players is
nothing short of amazing to work with and I spend a large amount of my week dealing with keeping them happy, they offer me the same level of commitment in return for limited expenses, this is why it angers me when others choose social media or shouting abuse from ten yards away knowing players can’t react. This is why I love this club and you as supporters, we don’t have that from anyone and I have only ever had full backing from anyone that supports this club. Them that know me will know that I deal with these issues and I will continue to do so, this way the name of Harrogate Railway is kept at a premium in footballing circles. Before the game against Ossett Town we signed Chris Ovington from them. I tried to sign Chris a few months ago and he decided to stay loyal to the manager John Reed. I totally respect that, he stayed and played for John and put in over 50 appearances for Ossett. Chris will add some experience to the squad being 25 years old and having played for Leeds United and at this level for a while.

Half Time Abandonment Denies Railway Derby Win Harrogate Railway were left cursing their luck after their local derby with Ossett Town was abandoned at half time with The Rail 3-0 up.
the midfielder glanced Hunter’s corner in at the near post. Ossett started to fight back but were denied by a crucial Nathaniel Pells headed clearance before Ross Shelton made insufficient contact with a back post header to trouble Tom Goodwin.
Lee Ashforth’s men got off to the best possible start in the pouring rain when Dan Barrett poked into the path of George Mason to finish at the near post for what would have been his first goal for the club.
The true rivalry between the two clubs then began to show in unsavoury scenes as Ross Shelton and Stockdill reacted angrily to a challenge, resulting in three players being shown yellow cards.
Railway were then awarded a spot kick after 13 minutes when Will Peers was brought down by Simon Rogers as he took the ball in his stride yards inside the penalty area. Lawrance Hunter confidently stepped up and side-footed into the top left corner to give Railway a two goal advantage.
Despite the torrential rain having eased off by the half time whistle, referee David Storrie and his assistants carried out a pitch inspection during the break and decided the pitch had become unplayable, despite Railway players being ready for the re-start.
The rampant hosts were then dealt a blow, however, as Barrett was given a straight red card for what the referee described as a slap to the face.
In the end it was extremely hard luck for Railway who were denied what looked like a comfortable win and vital three points.
Although a man down, Railway continued to outclass their opponents and added a third through Jack Stockdill when, after 25 minutes,

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

WHO ARE TRAFFORD?
The club was formed in summer 1990, being the brainchild of David Brown, John Harrison, David Law, and Bill Whitten under the name North Trafford, sharing Shawe View with Trafford Borough Rugby League Club. After initially being denied entrance, a late withdrawal resulted in the club being invited to join Division 2 of the Mid-Cheshire League for 1990/91 season. The first game at competitive level versus Macclesfield College was won 3-1, leading to a finish in second place, and promotion to Division One. As a bonus the club obtained sole tenancy of Shawe View via a 30 year lease, and substantial ground improvements were undertaken. 1990/91 Manager David Law took North Trafford to 2nd place in the Mid-Cheshire League Division 2 & were promoted to the Division One. 1991/92 saw progress continue on the field as 4th place was achieved coupled with a successful application to join Division 2 of the North West Counties League. 1992/93 the club had another good season ending with in 7th place in the NWCL Division 2.
1993/94 a magnificent second half of the season in which 20 out of 22 games were won, resulted in 2nd place and promotion to Division One. Additionally the first trophy was won via a 3-1 victory versus Maghull in the Lamot Pils Cup. Promotion was dependent on further ground improvements resulting in the erection of floodlights and the South
Stand, which was granted.
1994/95 was launched under the club’s present name, ending in 4th place and defeats in the finals of the Manchester Senior and Carling Cups, progress being maintained the next season via 3rd place and reaching the last 16 of the F.A, Vase losing to the eventual winners, Brigg Town. 1995/96 Trafford had another successful league programme finishing in 3rd place. 1996/97 was undoubtedly our most successful, winning the N.W.C.L. and gaining promotion to Division 1 of the Unibond League but losing out in the finals of the Manchester Senior Cup and the League Cup. David Law who had managed the club since inception was named N.W.C.L. Manager of the Year, and the Reserves won the N.W.C.L Reserve Division, the Reserve League Cup, and the Manchester Amateur Cup. 1997/98 saw an indifferent start but the club finishing 12th, and a further trophy was won, the Unibond First Division Cup, beating Lincoln United 3-1. 1998/99 started with the appointment of Mark Molyneaux as assistant manager to David Law, taking over the reins in the December, and guiding us to a final place of 14th.
season with thirteen games unbeaten run placing them in 5th place, their highest ever league position in the club’s eleven year history. 2001/02 saw Mark Molyneaux resign to take over at fellow Unibond First Division side Chorley, with the club finishing in 15th place. Trafford then appointed Joey Dunn as the new manager. 2002/03 the results didn’t come Trafford’s way and at Christmas the club decided to release manager Joey Dunn & appoint the vastly experienced Mike McKenzie who has won so many honours as a manager in the Unibond League. Sadly results still didn’t come & Trafford were relegated to the North West Counties League. 2003/04 By October Trafford decided to part-company with MikeMcKenzie after finding themselves in 19th position in Division One. A month later Trafford appointed 28 year old former Leigh R.M.I. Reserve Team Manager Danny Johnson as the new manager. Within a couple of weeks the results changed and Trafford began to improved their league position. 2004/05 By the end of season Danny Johnson’s young entertaining side finished in 16th position with 50 points.
1999/2000 Manager Mark Molyneaux along with his assistant Wayne Goodison guided Trafford to victory in the Unibond President’s Cup Final beating Whitby Town in the 2nd leg on their ground.
Trafford didn’t have much joy in any of the cup competitions but finished in an improved 12th position on 56 points. While the Reserve Team won their third County Cup in four seasons by winning the Manchester F.A. Trophy.

to a flying start in the League and had a good run in the FA Vase, but sadly couldn’t maintain their league form throughout the season finishing in 14th position
in the ‘hot-seat’ as Ged Kielty decided to step down as manager. During seven seasons in the 90’s Garry played a record 305 games for Trafford & is still the overall leading club goalscorer with 89 goals.
Season 2006-07 saw Trafford finish in 5th place in the NWCL Division One the club’s best campaign since 2001 when they finished in 5th place in the Unibond Division One. The season included a good run in the FA Cup, two players in the top 20 goalscorers in the NWCL, with Glyn Barker in 6th place with 34 goals & Troy Hayder in 16th place with 20 goals, & a end of season run of 17 games unbeaten to round off a marvellous season.
In his first season as a manager at Unibond League level Garry along with his Assistant Manager Loz Greenhalgh guided the club to a creditable 12th place in the First Division North & were finalists in the Manchester County FA Premier Cup. During this season striker Scott Barlow scored 21 goals to become the joint overall club top goalscorer with a total of 89 goals in his three seasons at the club along with Manager Garry Vaughan.
At the end of the season sadly manager Danny Johnson decided to move up to the Unibond League with Ashton United, with our player Ged Kielty becoming Trafford’s ’new’ Player Manager, assisted by Lee Southwood & coached by Tony Coyne.
2010-11 Trafford had a poor first half of the season, then Manager Garry Vaughan made a number of personnel changes including bringing back former Assistant Manager Wayne Goodison & the clubs fortunes changed finishing in a respectable 14th place.
2007/08 With the new look management Trafford had one of their most successful campaign’s winning the Vodkat League Championship title by 11 points with a club record of 95 points to be promoted to the Unibond League for a second time after winning the title in 1997.
2011-12 Trafford didn’t have much luck in any of the cup competitions & had a rollers coaster season in the First Division North finishing in 12th place.
From September 2007 Trafford went on a 29 league game unbeaten run including 18 straight wins which is a League record. Manager Ged Kielty was also voted Manager of the Year & the club won Programme of the Year. Centre forward Andy Lundy ended the season with 34 overall goals putting him in second place in the League goalscoring chart, but was the League top scorer with his 28 goals in Division One. His ‘sidekick’ Scott Barlow came close behind in fourth overall place with 29 goals. 2008-09 saw Trafford return to the Unibond League after an absence of five seasons. Manager Ged Kielty led the team to the club’s second Unibond League President’s Cup win beating First Division South Quorn 2-0 on their ground in the final. Trafford previously won the President’s Cup back in 1999-2000. Trafford’s striker Scott Barlow finished runner-up as the First Division North Overall Leading Goalscoring charts with 40 goals. 2012-13 In Garry Vaughan’s fourth season as Manager along with his Assistant Wayne Goodison they led Trafford to promotion to the Evo-Stik League Premier Division, after winning the First Division North Play-Off final against Cammell Laird 4-2 on penalties aet on their ground. 2013-14 Trafford playing in their highest ever level of football in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division the club had a very successful season finishing in a very impressive 10th place & won the Manchester Premier Cup against Football Conference side Hyde at Bury FC’s Gigg Lane. 2014-15 In January 2015 Manager Garry Vaughan & his Assistant Wayne Goodison resigned from the club & former Altrincham Manager Graham Heathcote took charge along with his Assistant Chris Adams. At the end of the season Trafford were relegated back to the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North & Graham Heathcote retired from Football management. 2015-16 In May 2015 Trafford appointed former FC Haifax & Chorley Captain Tom Baker as the club’s new Manager.

TRAFFORD PLAYER PROFILES MANAGER TOM BAKER Previously with Barnsley, Altrincham, Gainsborough Trinity, Scarborough, Bradford Park Avenue, FC Halifax Town and Droylsden he was a ball playing midfielder who was a dead ball specialist. Last season Tom was forced to retire after 17 months out in February 2015. Baker enjoyed an illustrious playing career having signed for Barnsley in 2001. He then signed a full time contract with Scarborough in 2005 but left the club following a succession of injuries. He then enjoyed a good deal of success at Bradford Park Avenue and Halifax Town before moving to Chorley under the management of Gary Flitcroft in 2012. Baker was a key component of Chorley’s Evo Stik Premier Division Championship winning team but once again he was hampered by injury and after a fifteen month battle to regain full fitness, he was forced to retire from playing. Tom is confident of getting Trafford back to winning ways and everyone at the club wishes him all the very best!

Having been at Stockport County for 16 years and also part of Witton Albion staff for several years it was a no brainier for me. After I sat down and spoke with Dave I knew he was the man for the job. He had the same beliefs as me on how things should be done and will be invaluable for both me and the goal keepers this season.”
CHRIS DENHAM ASSISTANT MANAGER Manager Tom Baker has named 32 year old Chris Denham as his Assistant to join our Robyn Jones who is the club’s Sports Therapist in the club’s backroom staff. Points From the Past POSTPONEMENTS. We’ve had a couple during recent weeks and having to re-arrange the fixtures will cause a problem or two. But the headaches will not be as big as they were in days gone by…
house and you’ll know where I mean. Next obstacle Wakefield. Right through the town centre, full of Christmas shoppers. Same again through Barnsley. Same again through Sheffield. We had to leave Harrogate at ten o’clock to have a good chance of getting there with a sensible amount of time to prepare for the game.
Let’s go back to the sixties, when I first became a follower of Harrogate Railway. We’ve been there before but it’s worth another look, if only to exercise my memory buds.
One thing was in our favour, there were no elaborate training sessions before the game – it was fags out and on to the pitch five minutes before the off.
We were in the Yorkshire League so the journeys weren’t as long in distance as they are now in the Evo-Stik League. However, measured in the time taken to get there, some were horrendous.
I remember one particular winter trip to Abbeydale Park in the mid-sixties. We always travelled by coach, imagine the drain on the club’s resources that caused.
A good example is a trip to Sheffield which, let’s be honest, doesn’t present much of a worry today. Remember, floodlights were a dream and there was no M1 motorway.
The coach driver took a few wrong turnings through Sheffield and managed to get us lost. We arrived at the ground after the scheduled kick-off time. The players got changed on the bus to save time.
So, an away match at Abbeydale Park, which is where Sheffield FC played in those days, in the middle of December. The kick-off would be 2.15 pm because of the lack of artificial lighting, perhaps 1.45 to allow for extra time if it was a cup game.
On top of everything else it was a dull day. The game started late and finished in virtual darkness. We were winning 1-0 with a goal from Willie Everitt in the second half. Prayers were being said in the hope that the referee would let the game finish, and he did, much to the disgust of the home team.
The M1 didn’t extend to Leeds until the end of the sixties. So the journey was on the A61. Through Leeds, perhaps pick up a player or two at the Quarry Hill flats. Those awful buildings are no longer there. Picture the West Yorkshire Play-
