LEE’S VIEW Welcome back to Station View, Today we entertain Ossett Town and their new manager Graham Nicholas. Graeme has recently arrived from Garforth Town and has already a win and a draw under his belt at this level of football so I am sure he will be pleased with the progress he is making. There will be a few ex players on show today including Sam Ackroyd who was with us three years ago. Sam is a great midfielder and rarely gives the ball away. We will also see the return of Cameron Lyn who started the season with us. Cameron made 3 starts and 1 substitute appearance, it did not quite work out for him and he will be one player we will need to be careful of today as his flair and attacking skills are excellent. He has been to watch a few of our games since and I know he is always welcomed back by everyone at the club. Roy Fogarty is also at Ossett Town and he made 7 appearances and scored one goal, an injury put him out of action for a while and he never quite forced his way back into the squad before opting for Ossett.
Finally they signed Jack McCarthy from us two weeks ago, Jack dual registered with Garforth early in the season and decided to show loyalty to Graeme by following him to Ossett. I respect that as loyalty is not often shown at this level of football. I love to see players come back to the club as I think its important to remember that football is a game we all enjoy and relationships should not be poor because of football decisions that are made. In our last home game we played Kendall Town, and lost the game 3-1. Once again I was disappointed as I felt we played well in large parts of the game on a very heavy pitch. We were undone by two outstanding strikes from 30 yards or so. We got back into the game through a Dan Barrett goal before being caught on the counter attack when pushing for an equaliser. We were then due to travel to New Mills, this was disappointingly postponed and even more so when Farsley,
Droylsden, Radcliffe and Witton all picked up points around us. Ossett were postponed too against Prescott so they will have looked and thought the same as us. We are still well within our target of a point per game and if you look at the last 5 games that is what we have, after two draws, two losses and a win. If we can continue to pick up points then we will move away from the relegation area and it is our aim to win the mini league that has now materialised near the bottom of the league. Some teams in there will try to buy their way out of trouble and will likely succeed, Farsley, Droyslden two examples of this who have the financial side. So the other teams are the ones that we need to keep an eye on and do better than. As a management team we set ourselves some targets at the start of the season that we wanted by Christmas, we have achieved some of them already, others we still need to make, but none are not achievable as we stand. Second Half Stunners Seal Points for Kendal Two wonder-strikes from Garry Hunter and Sam Bailey proved to be the difference for Kendal Town who sealed a 3-1 win at Station View a fortnight ago.
and was an even better strike than the first, as Bailey found space on the left wing and arrowed an unstoppable effort into the top right corner.
After a week of torrential rain, the first 20 minutes was a case of getting to grips with the conditions as the muddy pitch left it difficult for either side to assert their authority on the contest.
Railway substitute Dan Barrett then made an immediate impact from the bench, getting himself on the score-sheet after Hunter’s corner was headed towards goal by Bromley allowing Barrett to nick the final touch on the line.
In the best of the first half action, Tom Stewart was on hand to deny Aaron Taylor’s low strike, before some quick exchanges on the break between Stephen Bromley and Fatlum Ibrahimi lead to Rob Worrall testing the Kendal goalkeeper.
Railway tried desperately for an equaliser against a Kendal side only defeated once on the road in the league this season, but saw corner after corner cleared away. Bromley came closest to levelling for the hosts in the 73rd minute, but his powerful left footed effort was beaten away by Will Kitchen and cleared.
Michael Stringfellow’s men came flying out of the blocks in the second half and forced Lawrance Hunter into completing a vital goal line clearance to prevent his side conceding.
Kendal then hit Railway with a sucker punch in the 76th as Taylor broke down the right wing and crossed low in front of the goalmouth for Connerton to tap in and seal the three points.
The Mintcakes then claimed the opening goal of the contest in the 52nd minute when Hunter rattled a free kick off the bar and over the line from the edge of the box. Kendal’s second came just two minutes later,

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

At the heart of Harrogate Railway’s defence this season is former Bradford City centre-back Louis Horne. Horne came through the youth system at The Bantams, earning himself a two year contract and making his full debut at just 18 years old against Cheltenham Town. Now 24, and with much more experience under his belt, Horne has brought a number of qualities to Station View including a great deal of leadership from the back. He said: “I think I’m quite physical on the pitch, I like to win my individual battle and be good in the air. “I like to talk, organise and communicate with the lads around me, as a youngster I’ve always been quite talkative on the pitch. “I was Captain of the reserves for two years at Bradford City as a young lad and there was some experienced players there which helped. “I like to lead from the back and lead by example.” Since departing Bradford, where Horne worked closely with former Manchester United defender and Bantams youth team coach Chris Casper, the no-nonsense centre back has turned out for a number of clubs such as Halifax Town and Northwich Victoria before taking a break from the game. Now back involved with the football world, Horne is determined to train and play as much as possible and his 12 starts since making his Railway debut in September suggest the move has been a success. Horne added: “Chris Casper was my youth team coach at Bradford and helped me a lot in a lot of ways, he’s a top man.

“I’ve had quite a bit of time out of the game so I just wanted to get my head down and get back playing. “I just want to play as many games as I possibly can and not miss one game or one training session, that’s my aim. “It’s been a success so far, definitely, starting games is exactly what I was aiming for and I’m looking to play the rest of the games this season.” After being away from the game, adjusting to playing and training regularly once again could be a challenge for many, but Horne has been impressed by the way he has been welcomed at Station View. WHO ARE OSSETT TOWN?
In 1936, at a public meeting chaired by the Mayor of the Borough of Ossett, a former Yorkshire League referee called John Carter was given the task of bringing to Ossett the highest possible standard of football. The new club, to be known as Ossett Town Football Club, played in the Leeds League (later renamed the West Yorkshire League in 1939), played on a pitch behind the Fern House Working Mens Club on Wakefield Road and used various local pubs as headquarters. During World War II, the team switched to the Heavy Woollen League and had to use a pitch on Back Lane when the army commandeered Fern House. After the war in 1945, Town joined the Yorkshire League and three years later won the West Riding County Senior Cup, beating Salts 4–2 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. In 1950, Town finished 3rd, our best position in the Yorkshire League, scoring a record 120 goals that season.
In January 1957, Derrick Blackburn was transferred from Ossett Town to Swansea Town for £1,350. This fee enabled Ossett Town to acquire the Ingfield site in the centre of Ossett and the club moved to their new ground in 1959, just after being relegated from Division 1, Town bounced straight back at the first attempt, but were relegated again in 1962. By 1970, Town were members of the newly formed Division 3. About this time, the long serving player, Frank Lloyd, became manager and he signed up two former Newcastle &
Huddersfield strikers, Len White and Jim Kerray.
Frank eventually became secretary and was replaced as manager by John Riley. Town were promoted in 1973, but were relegated back to Division 3 in 1975. Again Town won promotion from Division 3 in 1976, but this time they stayed up and won promotion to Division 1 in 1978. However they were relegated again in 1980. In 1982 Town again won the County Cup beating Bradley Rangers 2–0 at Huddersfield Town’s Leeds Road ground in the final season of the Yorkshire League finishing runners up in Division 2. Ossett Town joined the newly formed Northern Counties East League in 1982/83. Initially they played in Division 1 North to 1984, then Division 1 Central for a year before joining Division 2. Graham Firth became Chairman in the mid-1980s and it was 1987 that really saw the start of the rise in fortunes at Ossett Town. Mickey Bullock was appointed manager and Town won the Division 2 Championship in 1988/89. The following season Town gained promotion to the Premier Division and won the League Cup beating Vase finalists Bridlington Town 1–0 at North Ferriby’s ground – Bridlington Town won the FA Vase that season and were managed by our current manager, John Reed. Under the Chairmanship of Graham Firth floodlights were installed, the pitch re-laid, new dressing rooms built and the social club extended as Town

prepared to move up the pyramid, also the record attendance of 2,600 was set when Town entertained Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in 1988. The President of Ossett Town, John Carter, died in 1994 at the age of 88. He had performed every role within the club, including chairman, secretary and team manager. In 1998/99, Town under manager Trevor Best, were unbeaten at Christmas and top of the table, however Best left the club and was replaced by Gary Brook, Town finishing runners up to local rivals Ossett Albion but due to ground grading issues The Unicorn’s were denied promotion meaning, after nine seasons in the Premier Division, Ossett Town gained promotion to the Northern Premier League. Finishing eighth in the first two seasons in the higher league Town finished runners up in 2001/02 and thought they had gained promotion to the Premier Division, but this time the ground grading rules worked against them and promotion was denied as ground improvement work was twelve hours late. In 2003/04, Scott Cooper started the season as manager, but by October Town were bottom of the league and Steve Richards took over as manager, Town finished 14th. However, because of the newly created Conference North Division Town found themselves promoted to the Premier Division – it was supposed to be the top 13 but the demise of Telford United created an additional place. In 2005/06, Ossett Town
achieved their best ever performance in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th qualifying round. Town lost 2–3 to Leamington who were drawn away at Colchester United in the 1st Round, losing 9–0. Despite the cup run, Town were in the relegation zone, a few weeks later the manager Steve Richards was replaced by his assistant, Steve Kittrick, results improved considerably and Town eventually finished 11th and a year later 10th. In 2007/08, after a bright start, Town were surprised in November when manager Steve Kittrick resigned to become Guiseley manager. A number of players left the club and new manager Simon Collins had to endure a miserable run of results as he brought in a lot of new players, including former Huddersfield Town colleagues, Simon Baldry and Chris Billy. Town finished the season in 18th and avoided relegation on goal difference. Despite being clear favorites for the drop in 2008/09 the side finished an impressive 12th place. Manager Si Collins brought in his old Macclesfield Town manager Peter Davenport as an advisor and the results and performances started to improve.
Phil Sharpe was appointed manager in June 2010. He brought in former Ossett Town player Paul Sykes as assistant. Phil Sharpe took charge for the 2010-11 season but with a tight budget and under-par performances Town suffered relegation to the Northern Premier League Division One North after only one home win all season. The only relegation the club suffered under the chairmanship of Graham Firth. Town kept faith with Phil Sharpe for the 11/12 season and added Eric Gilchrist to the dug-out, the ex Osett Albion manager of many years, as Sharpe’s assistant. Town had many good games in both the cups and the league but there was a lack of consistency overall and league performances were below-par. Phil Sharpe stepped down and he was replaced by his assistant Eric Gilchrist as caretaker manager. Town finished the season in 17th place.
Sadly, the season was overshadowed by the death, on 8 March at the age of 80, of long serving player, manager and secretary Frank Lloyd. The directors room at the ground was renamed The Frank Lloyd Hospitality Suit in his memory, inside there is a photograph of him with the FA Cup taken a few years earlier when it visited Ingfield.
Season 2012/13 saw a new man at the helm with the appointment of Craig Elliott as first team manager. With a number of new players being brought in, it took time to find a settled side and the team finished a credible 12th in the league, ending up the highest placed West Yorkshire team. However, this season will go down as a cup season with the team arguably playing in their biggest game of the club’s history, when we lost away to Stockport County in the FA Trophy. Town also reached the semi-final of the County Cup before going out to FC Halifax Town.
In July 2009, Simon Collins resigned after a dispute with the committee over the size of next season’s budget and was replaced by a joint management team made up of reserve team manager Paul Lines and former Bradford Park Avenue reserve team manager, Mick Couzens.
2013/2014 was a momentous season on and off the field, first of all Graham Firth stood down as chairman after 28 years, taking up the Honorary President role at the club. The members voted for the Junior Chairman, James Rogers, to be his replacement.
The partnership was not harmonious and in October, Couzens resigned after an argument with Lines, who continued as first team manager until the club appointed former Hull City and Wolves player Peter Daniel as manager, Lines reverted to reserve manager.
John Reed, assisted by Clive Freeman were the big name replacements to run the side and they guided the club to an impressive eighth-place finish. Once again there was a high turnover of players at the club, a number of youngsters joining the side such as Brad Dixon from Leeds United and Nathan Curtis from Bradford City.
The appointment was not a success with Peter Daniel resigning in March and Lines was again was re-instated as first team manager until the end of the season. The club finished second from bottom but avoided relegation due to the closure earlier in the season of Newcastle Blue Star and King’s Lynn.
The on field performances were very inconsistent leading to an 18th-place finish in a tough division. The majority of players, a year older and with a lot more experience have re-signed for the 15/16 season.

SAM AKEROYD Midfielder Sam signed for the club in November 2014 from NCEL side Garforth Town. Sam is looking to add goals to his game this season, the two last season were much less than he expects of himself.
CHRIS OVINGTON Midfielder Very popular midfielder who started his career at Leeds United. Joined the club with John Reed and hit the ground running, last season was stop start, but now fully fit a lot is expected from Ovo. ROSS SHELTON Midfielder Calm and composed defensive midfielder. He has excellent technical ability and has fitted straight into the side and a valuable member of the team. LUKE MANGHAM Midfielder Luke his highly rated, he loves to get on the ball and run at defenders. Graham Nicholas believes he has all the attributes required to become a key member of the team. CAMERON LYN Midfielder A recent signing from Droylsden, Cammy has fitted straight into the squad. He loves to run at defenders and has become an instant hit with the Ossett Town fans. TAWANDA RUPERE Midfield A very athletic, pacey and strong midfield player. T possesses a brilliant attitude and work ethic. His ability to run at defenders and link-up play is an aspect of his game that Graham Nicholas admires MARK SIMPSON Forward

We’d got to the point when the Alliance Premier League was formed in 1979. This competition became known as the Gola League, then the Vauxhall Conference (the name ‘Conference’ stayed until last season) but is now termed the Vanarama National League and has a premier division and two regional lower levels, divisions north and south.
For many years the FA Vase was our major cup competition, after the FA Cup itself, but with promotion to the UniBond League (now the Evo-Stik League) in 2006 we were elevated to the Trophy. Our best run was in 2010-11 when we reached the third of the three qualifying rounds under the auspices of Nigel Danby.
The top division could even be termed “League Three” as there is automatic promotion and relegation to and from the Football League, subject to various gradings and conditions.
A hard-fought 1-0 win at Belper Town in the preliminary round brought a home tie against Ossett Albion which we really struggled to win 2-1. Then, the second qualifying round brought a trip into the unknown – a day out in the midlands to face Romulus.
Anyhow, back to the FA Trophy. It was expected that the new Alliance clubs would dominate but initially they weren’t particularly successful. In 1980-81 the Isthmian League provided both finalists with Bishop’s Stortford beating Sutton United.
Kevin Ryan gave us a first-half lead and we were looking even better when the home side had a player dismissed shortly after the break. However, it seemed to spur them on, they equalised and were certainly on top for a while. But a late wonder goal from Mike Duckworth ensured our passage through to a home tie against Nantwich Town in the last qualifying round.
The first replay was in 1984 when Northwich Victoria were victors over Bangor City (the first Welsh club to reach the final) at Stoke City’s old Victoria Ground before a disappointing crowd of just 5,800. Even at Wembley attendances have never matched the Amateur Cup finals at their peak but they generally topped 20,000.
Expectations of the first round proper were high, we battled hard. A seven-goal thriller sadly didn’t go our way, we lost 4-3.
