A warm welcome to Kendall Town and their management team, staff and supporters for todays Evostick encounter. Kendall are currently sat in 14th place in the table and have had some very good results through the season and have a couple of games in hand over the people around them so we will be in for another tough task today.
We now have 26 games left of the season after playing 22 in all competitions so almost halfway there.
I seem to say that each week and I believe the tightness of the league shows how difficult each game is. We have lifted ourselves out of the bottom two with last weeks win but one defeat and a win for Farsley could put us back in there so its important that we continue to pick up points and pull ourselves away from the bottom two. Mid week we entertained Stocksbridge in blustery conditions and on a heavy pitch due to the ridiculous amount of rain that we have had over the last few days. Steve Thirkell has worked tirelessly throughout the summer and I think everyone is in agreement that the pitch has been superb and well looked after. He will have had his work cut out this week to recover the playing surface from Mondays game but I am sure that he will have done all he can to ensure the pitch is back to the high levels that he has set. We lost the game 3-2 after leading by two at half-time but I knew at the interval how difficult the second half would be and it proved to be the case. We would like to win every game we play but we have picked up a lot of injuries lately and a suspension to Alex Low so I was just happy to get through the game with no
If I was asked before the season how many points I would have liked after 16 games I would have liked 16 so we are slightly behind the targets I set but not massively, and certainly the first half of the season was all about rebuilding our squad. We have only used 27 players in all competitions up to now with captain Dan Thirkell the only ever present. I think thats about right and shows that we have only used players that we needed rather than massively changing things on a regular basis. At todays game will be ex-Railway manager Martin Haresign and a few players from the promotion season from the North East Counties to what was then the Unibond League. I played for Martin for three seasons at Railway between the two FA cup runs and I left the season that they won promotion. What does that tell you!! Martin was the best manager I have played for, his man management skills were superb and he always stuck to his beliefs and said it exactly as it was. Even when I left after he signed Tom Morgan I went with some great memories and times. I have very rarely seen him since and it will be great to catch up with him again today. In the team at that time we had some great characters, some of which are here today. Phil Turner, JD and Damian Holmes and the Ryan brothers amongst them, all great players at that time, in fact Lee Ryan will
probably say he’s still great now!! I remember a couple of stories from that time period, we played Silsden away in the FA Vase and I remember coming out of my goal to collect (probably miss) a cross, Phil Turner did not listen to the call and gently nodded the ball into the empty net, he blamed me but not a chance Phil!! Now I am in management I realise that all the small things that you look for make a difference, travelling to one game with Martin I was sat in the back of the car with a
portable DVD player, I was watching Own goals and Gaffs with David Seaman,
regularly now with his partner Debbie and its always good to see them.
Martin could not believe that was my match preparation!! Finally I want to mention Dick Roache, he was the physio at the time and a lot of his work went unnoticed by the players but what a part of the management team he was, he was always first there and last to leave, had every strapping and coloured tape available.
In football you play and meet hundreds of players and people and you only stay in touch with a handful of them, its a shame but thats just the way it is.
He hated players drinking Red Bull and if you touched his kit bag he went crazy!! He still attends the games

Thats why today will be great to see them people who I spent three years of my life with on a weekly basis, top guys and I hope that we can put in a performance for them today. Enjoy the game.

Second Half Comeback Signals Cup Exit for Railway NPL Division One South side Stocksbridge Park Steels came from two goals down to eliminate Harrogate Railway from the Integro Doodson Cup last Monday night.
Chris Hilton’s men began the second 45 in the ascendancy and could have scored had Thirkell not been on hand to block Harrison Biggins’ on target effort and clear a dangerous corner delivery.
After getting to grips with the blustery conditions, Railway broke the deadlock when Jack Stockdill powered a free kick into the bottom left corner after good hold up play from Stephen Bromley had drawn a foul.
Although Railway looked dangerous at the other end though Stockdill’s quick breaks, Stocksbridge got a goal back in the 68th minute when Matthew Reay poked home from close range, despite a series of goal line blocks from substitute Simon Wood.
The Steels almost found an immediate response, when in the 18th minute, Joe Lumsden found himself through on goal but was denied by Tom Stewart’s smart save.
Stocksbridge then made their numerous set pieces pay and got back on level terms after a corner was diverted to Lumsden at the back post who had the easy job of tapping home. There was a sense of urgency coming from both camps at 2-2 with the prospect of penalties looming, but it was the NPL South side who got the decisive goal just three minutes from time.
Just before the half hour mark, Dan Thirkell came agonizingly close to grabbing his fourth goal of the season when Bromley played in the skipper on the break, only for the inside of the post to prevent Railway’s second. The hosts then doubled their advantage after 34 minutes when Stockdill’s incisive through ball was collected by Bromley who showed his typical effort and desire to finish at the second attempt.
Reay was alert enough to meet a free kick delivery at the near post and cushion the ball into the corner; notching his second of the game and completing the turnaround.

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

Owen Hits the Ground Running Strikers are often judges on goals, and if Tom Owen’s start to life at Harrogate Railway is anything to go by, Station View’s newest frontman is ticking all the boxes. After being introduced for his debut at Warrington Town last month in a difficult situation with the game already out of sight, Owen wasted no time in finding the score-sheet on two occasions and giving his teammates an early indication of what he is capable of. The former Selby man added another to his tally in October’s 2-2 draw at Scarborough and is hoping there’s plenty more where that came from. Owen said: “It was nice to get on the scoresheet, it always is, but I never thought goals would be the issue coming here; hopefully I can bring goals to the team. “I knew I was coming here on the back of having no pre-season so I thought it would be fitness I need to work on. “Getting game time under my belt is definitely helping, the fitness is coming and hopefully the goals can keep coming too. “There are lads here already that can score, but it would be nice to get to the top of the list and be that guy who can bring us over the line.” Owen spent time as York City as a youth player where he crossed paths with a number of Railway’s current squad, although it was his time with the International Academy that Tom looks back on fondly.

WHO ARE KENDAL TOWN?
The club’s origins come from the K Shoes company: employees at the firm’s Netherfield factory were encouraged to form a football team which was originally formed as Netherfield AFC at the end of the First World War. They were provided with land near to the factory at Parkside Road, where the club resides to this day, and began to compete in local leagues.
In 1955 Wrexham were visitors to Parkside Road in the FA Cup and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. By the time Grimsby Town visited in 1956 it had been the 5th time in 8 years that Netherfield AFC had reached the first round stage of the FA Cup. Over 5,000 local people turned up to watch the Third Division leaders beat Netherfield 5-1, a then home record crowd.
In 1945 the club had joined the semi-professional ranks by joining the Lancashire Combination League. For the first time in its history Netherfield AFC played against Football League opposition when nearly 10,000 people watched the two FA Cup ties against Barrow.
The following year, 1956, saw Netherfield winning the Combination Cup, a trophy they won again five years later in 1961. Once again Parkside Road saw FA Cup action as Football League side Chesterfield were held to a draw in 1963.
Netherfield AFC was soon established as a major club by taking the Lancashire Combination Championship in 1949 and again qualifying to meet a football league side, Gateshead in the FA Cup. Cup success was quickly becoming a tradition as in the following year, 1950, over 15,000 people watched Netherfield AFC take on Watford in the second round of the FA Cup.
Tom Brownlee managed to score an incredible 76 goals in the 1963/4 season as Netherfield finished runners up to Chorley. The 1964/65 season was probably Netherfield’s most successful as they won the Lancashire Combination First Division Championship Division, with the reserve team winning the Second Division of the Combination as well. Together with an appearance in the First Round of the FA Cup at home to Barnsley.

In 1968 the Club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970s were not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade. In 1980 Netherfield and Bridlington Trinity set a record for cup tie replays when they played each other seven times in the first round of the FA Trophy. After a total of thirteen and a half hours of play Netherfield won 2-0 to go through to the second round. However the cost to both clubs was dear, a total of £1,800 and it depleted the finances of Netherfield causing the Club to move down into the North West Counties League Division 1 in 1982. In 1987 the Northern Premier League expanded into a new division, League Division 1 which provided a route back for the Club to play at a higher level. In 1998 the Club changed its name to Netherfield Kendal and two years later changed again to Kendal
Town FC. New state of the art floodlights began a slow process of gradual ground redevelopment in 2004 and 2,500 fans turned up to watch the lights switched on for a visiting Manchester United XI squad. Manager Tony Hesketh returned to the club for a second spell as Manager in 2004/5 steering them to fifth place in the league. In the ensuing play-off final the club travelled to AFC Telford as underdogs. Although Kendal could not overhaul the favourites they won much respect from the 4,250 Telford fans watching as they narrowly lost 2–1. 2005/6 saw the Kendal’s most successful season for 40 years as they achieved a promotion for the first time in their history to the Unibond Premier League. The run-in to the end of the season was a nail-biting one and Kendal missed out on automatic promotion by a single goal difference on the last day of the season. In the play-off final at Parkside Road former Manager Peter Smith popped up to score the winner in the last minute against Gresley Rovers to seal a famous promotion. After a fine start to the 2006/7 season in the Unibond Premier League, reality kicked in for Kendal Town. After a series of poor results, both in the league and in cup competitions, manager Tony Hesketh resigned for personal reasons, to be replaced by club captain Lee Ashcroft. The club hovered around the relegation zone for some time, but managed to
avoid relegation. The highpoint of the season for the club was when Preston and England football legend Sir Tom Finney was persuaded to be club President: Sir Tom when a teenager had actually been turned down as a player by the club. The 2007/8 season saw the club finish in mid table. The following two seasons were Town’s best in the Unibond Premier League, under Lee Ashcroft they secured two play-off places in a row, but losing in the semi-finals each time. As with many similar non-league clubs the recession brought financial issues to Kendal Town, budget restrictions caused manager Lee Ashcroft to leave half way through the 2012/13 season, taking most of the playing staff with him. Steve Edmondson took over as manager, but was unable to prevent the club being relegated. The 2013/14 season was one of consolidation in the Evo Stick First Division North; the social club which was in private ownership was been taken back by the club to provide a further source of income and Dave Foster replaced Steve Edmondson as manager. The 2014/15 season opened with hopes of a play-off place, but after a series of indifferent results Dave Foster departed and his assistant Mike Springfellow stepped up and was able to steady the ship and produce a number of exciting home wins against a clutch of highly rated league clubs although finding a consistent run of results was an ongoing problem.

Martin Returns to Station View
Harrogate Railway are delighted to welcome former Manager Martin Haresign along with a number of players and staff back to Station View for today’s match against Kendal Town.
a resounding win over Sheffield FC. “The season we did get promoted was brilliant because we got down to the last four or five games and needed to win them all!
Having played for the club during the 1980’s Martin was appointed Railway Manager in October 2003, taking over a club that had collected just six points of a possible 27. Haresign steadied the ship and guided Railway to safety in his first season before securing promotion from the NCEL Premier Division to Railway’s current league the NPL Division One North in 2005/06. Martin managed the club up until 2007 before handing first team matters over to Assistant Manager Vince Brockie, also returning to Station View today, who went on to manage Railway on their famous FA Cup run of 2007/08.
“I remember going to Sheffield on an evening game and beating them 5-1, we were different class that night!” Ten years on from that famous season, Haresign is excited for a reunion with his old squad and in particular current boss Lee Ashforth who was Martin’s man between the sticks during his time in the dugout. “It was something we talked about last year really, I just got together with one or two players and it sort of escalated from there. I think there are about 20 lads coming and about 12 of them played for Railway, so it’ll be really good to meet up with everybody again.”
Reflecting on his time with the club, Haresign said: “As a manager it was probably the best period of my career, I really enjoyed it. I definitely felt I was treated better at Harrogate than I was anywhere else.
“I’ve heard really good reports about what Ash is like as a manager from players who’ve played for him and I’m pleased to say he’s doing well.
“It had been about 90 years that the club had been trying to get promotion so to go up within a couple of seasons was brilliant.
“He always knew how to talk to people as a lad, but you don’t always know whether that transforms into being manager, but obviously it has done and I’m really pleased he’s doing well.
“I really enjoyed having the backing of the committee and supporters, plus the chairman Mick Gray was different class. “There was some good players there with people like Ryan Haigh, Phil Turner, Damian Henderson, Robbie Wellans, Ian Blackstone and the Ryan brothers Lee and Scott Ryan to name a few.
“It’s a really difficult league because there are so many teams in there who are planning on going higher and throwing enormous amounts of cash at it. “I think you have to be realistic and think unless the club are able to do that then you’re probably going to struggle to win the league or get promoted.
“When I left it was purely a work thing and I didn’t want to manage anywhere else. I recommended Vinnie and he went on to do well with a good FA Cup run so it was a good period for us.”
“Every team you play is a difficult game so I think it’s a case of just doing the best you can with what you’ve got and I think Ash is doing that well.”
One memory that sticks in the mind of Haresign is the final few games of the 05/06 season that lead to promotion, culminating in

Points From the Past WE’VE looked back at the FA Amateur Cup and indeed the West Riding FA County Cup. Let’s now take a look at the early years of the FA Challenge Trophy…
successful over the nest ten years. In the first season the semi-finals were played on neutral Football League grounds, like the FA Cup at the time, but this proved unpopular with the fans so the rules were changed and semi-finals were then played over two legs, home and away.
Although it wasn’t until 1969 that the first FA Trophy matches were played, the idea of a national cup competition for senior non-League clubs was nothing new. However, with the reorganisation of semi-professional football in the north by the formation of the Northern Premier League, now the Evo-Stik League, it seemed an appropriate time to push for the introduction of such a competition.
In 1974-75, with the ending of the Amateur Cup, the Trophy became the target of the top clubs from the Isthmian and Northern Leagues but it was to be a few years before any of these clubs made the final.
The non-professionals were catered for by the FA Amateur Cup at the time and the non-League pros felt as though they were being denied a realistic opportunity of playing in a cup final beneath the famous twin towers of Wembley.
Between 1972 and 1977 Scarborough made four Trophy finals, winning on three occasions. Stafford Rangers made the final three times between 1971 and 1979, winning twice. In 1977 Dagenham became the first former Amateur Cup competitors to reach Wembley but they lost to Scarborough. Dagenham returned to the final in 1980, however, and their win over Mossley meant they became the first truly southern club to win the Trophy.
Entries for the first competition in the 1969-70 season were, in the main, the semi-professional clubs outside the football league and some other clubs who included ‘contract’ (ex-professional) players on their books and therefore ineligible to compete in the Amateur Cup.
We’ll continue our look at this competition next time and talk about our best foray which was the first time that cup fever was felt here since we made the FA Cup second round (come on Salford, you’re not the only grass-rooters to be live on MOTD!) in 2007.
The Southern League Premier Division clubs were expected to be the most successful but the Northern Premier League quickly dominated.
