Hello and welcome to Station View, A warm welcome to Stocksbridge and their staff tonight. Stocksbridge have started well in the Southern section of the league and are currently sat just outside the play offs so tonight will be a difficult task. Realistically the league is of more importance to both clubs, however, a nice cup run can add to the season and I am therefore certain both sides will be striving to be in the draw for the next round. In our last home game we grabbed a last minute equaliser against high flying Brighouse and we certainly deserved a point from the game. Dan Thirkell popped up with the goal and he continues to lead by example in his captains role.
Since then we have had three very difficult away games. Starting with Clitheroe. We lost the game comfortably in the end, not helped by the sending off of Alex Low but I was generally disappointed with our overall performance. We then travelled to Barn-
oldswick in the West Riding County Cup, we were on the end of a heavy defeat and although extremely disappointing we made a lot of changes with the following league game due and we were far too disjointed and were made to suffer against a team wanting to prove a point. We then visited Droylsden in a very important game against a team near the bottom of the league with us.
We dominated the game for large parts and although we scored two goals in the last ten minutes to win the game 3-2, I think we were well worthy of our win and were a little unfortunate to be behind during the game. The win got us out of the bottom two and got us close to the little group above us. I continue to believe in the squad and as we continue to rebuild we now have some games where we can gain some points, it is important that the players are aware of this and put in the performances to match our expectations. We added three players prior to the Droylsden game, Will Peers has signed from neighbours Wetherby.
Will played at Brigg Town last year and after moving to our area was recommended by the Wetherby manager Mark Foster and our ex-captain Jon Maloney. He’s impressed in training and did well coming off the bench. George Mason was the second signing, having move to Leeds to University he asked to come and trial, he played for Kendall Town towards the back of last season and again is highly recommended. The final signing of the three is Tom Stewart, a Goalkeeper from Harrogate Town, he is dual registered, he had a professional contract at Morecambe in 2013 and is now getting some game time with us. It was the hardest decision of my management so far having to leave Tom Goodwin out of the team, Tom was superb for us last season and I believe the pressure to reproduce that form has been difficult for him with a young team in front of him, Tom will bounce back and is still a massive part of my plans for the season. Thirkell Rescues a Point for The Rail Dan Thirkell’s stoppage time goal helped Harrogate Railway come from behind and secure a point against Brighouse Town on Saturday 24th October.
rall which prompted ugly scenes as players squared up to one another in the heat of the moment before referee Peter Henger consulted his assistants and deemed the tackle worthy of a red card.
Brighouse had the first opening of the afternoon when Ernest Boafo looked to claim his 11th goal of the season but was denied at the near post by Tom Goodwin.
Railway came inches away from an equaliser in the 78th minute when, after Lawrance Hunter’s corner was only cleared as far as Thirkell, Louis Horne headed the skipper’s cross onto the bar.
The two sides exchanged attempts in a frantic start with Jack Stockdill and Fatlum Ibrahimi going close for Railway and Goodwin keeping out Ryan Hall’s low cross with his feet.
Brighouse had a golden chance to seal the win with just a minute left of normal time as Railway were pouring men forward in search of an equaliser leaving Daniel Facey with a one on one opportunity that Goodwin managed to keep out with his feet.
Brighouse then took the lead in first half stoppage time when Steven Hollingworth headed into an empty net following Goodwin’s save from Boafo bouncing kindly to the striker.
And Railway made the visitors pay for not taking their chance in the 92nd minute when Hunter’s dangerous delivery was poorly cleared and picked up by Thirkell who smashed through a crowd of players to level the scores.
It was a frustrating time to concede for Railway, but the outlook of the game changed five minutes after the restart when Brighouse were reduced to ten men. Tom Haigh went crashing into Rob Wor-

The Harrogate Railway Team Lee Ashforth has a wealth of Non-league experience in and around these levels of football and played at Station View for three seasons before moving on. A popular choice he arrived at Liversedge with Billy in 2010/11 and in 2011/12 stepped up to become Billy’s right hand man. His playing experience alongside his calm approach made him the ideal candidate for his role. Summer 2015 sees Lee take on his biggest challenge yet as he succeeds Billy Miller as manager of Harrogate Railway, leading Railway for the 2015/16 season. Simon Wood is an experienced player who can play across the back four and is now involved on the management of the reserves. He has played 500+ games at Evostick level and although starting the season injured will be hopeful of a successful season.

Steve Grime joins Lee’s management team as Head of Development. A full time UEFA B level coach working at IAFE, Steve has previous coaching experience at Man City and Leeds. Steve will incorporate first team responsibilities alongside his IAFE work and will create links between all age groups and the first team. Alex Farrell graduated from Manchest Metropolitan University with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. He has played for Harrogate Railway AFC at junior level. Harrogate Railway’s History Harrogate Railway was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success, winning the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site.
Railway finished in the top three in 2006 and achieved Uni-Bond Northern Premier League status, the vital victory at Sheffield probably the best display of the season. History had been made and the club was set to play at the highest level of the pyramid in its history. The first season in the Uni-Bond League proved to confound the bookies who predicted a basement finish. A good start was built upon and the campaign ended in a mid-table finish.
The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone. Sadly, the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. Nevertheless, under the auspices of “Chick” Farr the club soldiered on through the sixties and they almost repeated their Amateur Cup exploits of the fifties when they made the first round proper in 1961 only to lose 4-2 at Whitley Bay.
Unfortunately Martin had to relinquish managerial duties for business reasons but Vince Brockie and new assistant Dave Morgan carried on the good work. The following season’s league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. Assistant manager Dave Morgan was promoted to manager for the following season but found life difficult, gleaning only 2 points from the first 36. He resigned and in his place came Phil Sharpe and Richard Chattoe. Between them they staved off fears of relegation and looked for consolidation in the future.
In 1964 they won promotion to the first division of the Yorkshire League, then just three steps from the Football League itself, and made the Yorkshire League Cup Final, losing to Farsley Celtic after a replay. The late sixties and the seventies became a real struggle and Railway had to pull out of the Yorkshire League and return to the Harrogate League in 1973. This gave the club time to re-group and they were back in the Yorkshire League in 1980 becoming founder-members of the new NCEL League in 1982. Freddie Cliff steered the club to promotion from the second division (north) and won the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Woolley Miners Welfare in the final. Meanwhile a new junior structure was formed, thanks to the work of John and Mary Lindsay and now Railway can boast one of the best junior set- ups in the region. In the 1990-91 season Railway made their first major impression in the FA Cup, Denis Metcalf steering his team to the fourth qualifying round. Future manager Martin Haresign actually played in the 3-1 defeat at Chorley.
However, the start of the season was not one of the best and Christmas saw Railway again languishing at the bottom end of the table but an influx of good, battling players pulled the club away from the drop-zone. Richard Chattoe left mid-season and Nigel Danby came in as Phil’s assistant. Phil resigned at the end of the season and Nigel was appointed as manager, bringing in Mick Norbury as his right hand man. Nigel and Mick’s reign lasted just short of two seasons as they flirted with relegation in both years. In came a management team of Alan Parkes, Dennis Metcalfe, Bob Moffat & Steve Donoghue to replace them. Despite valiant efforts in the last six League games Rail found themselves in the bottom two when the season finished. Thankfully Rail were reprieved due to Durham City taking voluntary relegation and Woodley Sports being relegated due to a Ground Regulation ruling.
Floodlights were installed in 1991 and a strong Sheffield United side, including Vinnie Jones, provided the star opposition at the official opening. Management changes and more financial hardship hindered progress as the nineties wore on. However, Dave Fell joined as boss in 1998 and won the NCEL first division but he departed at the end of the same season. Paul Marshall took the job on and, although it was a struggle, he kept Railway in the premier division. The club’s faith in him culminated in two amazing back-to-back FA Cup runs. The fourth qualifying round was reached for a second time in 2001, the run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe, the winner coming deep into injury time.
The 2012-13 season started with the new management team of ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashforth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below us it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of that season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all three Evo-Stik leagues.
A year later Railway went two better and, after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. Railway opted to play the game at home and temporary stands adorned Station View. Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002.
2013-14 Billy & Ash consolidated our position within the League forging a strong relationship with Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town, dual registering players to boost the player pool at Railway. As a result, Railway finished 13th on 48 points for the season. 2014-15 season saw Railway finish with a record points tally and eigth - a record high. Nathan Cartman wont the golden boot for being the league’s top scorer.
Bristol City were made to fight for their 3-1 win, Steve Davey netting with 17minutes to go, but once again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate. Despite winning the NCEL President’s Cup, Paul Marshall was not reinstated. Leeds duo Dave Harrison and John Francis were appointed but, after just one win in 11 games and early exits from the FA competitions they stepped down. Martin Haresign was brought in to steady the ship and retain NCEL status.
Lee Ashforth took the managerial reigns when Billy left during Summer 2015 and we look foward with excitement to the new season.

WHO ARE STOCKSBRIDGE PS FC?
Stocksbridge Park Steels was created in 1986 with the merger of Stocksbridge Works F.C. and another Stocksbridge Club Oxley Park Sports F.C. Stocksbridge Works had the ground and only one team and Oxley Park had three teams and no ground.
In the early years 1986-91 the new Club ploughed all its resources into the Bracken Moor Stadium so as to meet ground grading criteria and enable the Club to rise through the nonleague pyramid system. There was an opening of a social club, refurbishment to the dressing rooms, erection of floodlights, the building of new stand and extension to the social club new canteen area, making the ground the best junior stadium in South Yorkshire, which currently hosts 8 to 9 Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA Finals. The appointment of Mick Horne and Trevor Gough as Team Manager and Assistant in February 1991 heralded a period of success to rival
the works in the 1950/1964 period. Under Mick and Trevor, Steels started their run to the present Unibond League.
1993/4 saw steels win Premier division of the NCEL, but Steels celebrations were cut short when the ground improvements necessitated were not at an advanced enough state to allow Steels to take place in the Unibond League. The following season Steels finished in 3rd place and in 1995/96 they were runners up to Hatfield Main and gained promotion to the Unibond First Division. Steels made steady progress in the first five seasons in the Unibond League, with the highest placed position of 4th achieved in 2000/01. In 2002 Wayne Biggins was subsequently appointed Player/Manager after a short spell as Assistant Manager, with Graham Furness as Assistant. In the 2002/03 season, Paul Jackson, equalled an FA Cup record of ten goals in one game, during the Steels 17-1 thrashing of Oldham Town.

Steels had their best FA Cup run in the 2003/2004 season reaching the fourth qualifying round eventually losing away at Shildon In November 2003 Peter Rinkcavage was appointed as Manager from Gainsborough Trinity with Paul Bradshaw as Assistant with Jason Maybury, taking over from Bradshaw in 2004. A good season followed in 2005/2006 with the Steels, just missing out on promotion after losing to Kendal in the play-offs. In the 2006/2007 season Steels missed out on a play-off position after being in the top three in 90% of the season. But the team finished the season on a high note beating local rivals Worksop Town in the Sheffield senior cup final at Hillsborough. This was to be the last game, with Peter Rinkcavage in charge. He along with assistant Jason Maybury, left to join Worksop Town in the summer of 2007. Gary Marrow, along
with his assistant Mark Ogley was appointed manager before the start of the 2007/2008 season, with former player Gary Ingham taking over from Ogley midway through the season. In his First season at the club, Marrow steered them to a credible 5th place losing to local rivals Sheffield F.C. in the play-off semi-final. Steels have just been awarded the prestigious top FA Charter Standard Community Club Award (3 of 3) and representatives from most of the Clubs 22 squads were at the Presentation on August 6th when Sheffield United player Geoff Horsfield and Blades Legend Keith Edwards handed over the FA plaque. At the moment the club has 420 players either playing in a squad or being coached on a regular basis (12 Junior Boys, 3 Junior Girls and 7 Seniors). Stocksbridge Park Steels is now acknowledged to be the top ‘grass roots’ Community Club in South Yorkshire. 2008/09 was a fabulous season for Gary Marrows team, having finished third in Unibond League Division 1 South they won the play-off final against Derbyshire rivals Belper Town 1-0 and were promoted to the Unibond Premier league for the first time in the club’s history. Steels supporters were in for a roller coaster debut season in the Unibond premier league, 10 games into the season while his team were top of the league, manager Gary Marrow resigned. Former Steels player Simon
Collins took over but unfortunately his tenure didn’t last long. Reserve manager Steve Shutt took over and guided Steels to an excellent 11th place. The 2010/11 season started with the return of Gary Marrow as manager. Gary Marrow resigned just before Christmas during the 2011/12 season and was replaced with Chris Willcock, Darren Schofield was appointed his assistant. Willcock guided the Steels to safety that season with a little help from Mickleover Sports who were docked points for playing an ineligible player. Willcock’s second season in charge didn’t start well and he was replaced by his assistant Darren Schofield who brought in the experienced defender Brett Lovell as his number two. Once again Stocksbridge managed to avoid relegation but again it went down to the wire. The 2013/14 season started on a high with an exciting victory over Droylsden but from then on the Steels struggled, spending most of the season in the relegation zone. The club and long serving player/manager Darren Schofield parted company at the end of the season. Former Worsborough Bridge manager Chris Hilton was appointed the new boss for the 2014/15 season. Chris immediately brought in the former Emley midfielder Mark ‘Willy’ Wilson as his assistant and experienced former Barnsley defender Ryan Laight as player coach.

It was Railway who had the first sight of goal as Dan Thirkell’s long throw fell to Jack Stockdill, although the midfielder’s snapshot was denied by the knees of Benjamin Woodhead.
Clitheroe’s number nine did get on the scoresheet three minutes later when he capitalised on some hesitation from Goodwin; nipping in to take the ball and rounding the Railway stopper to tap into an empty net.
Despite the visitors encouraging start it was Clitheroe who took the lead when a cross-field ball found Scott Bakkor on the right wing to fire home his ninth league goal of the season.
Harries should have got on the score sheet with five minutes to go when he was given a free header six yards out from a corner but couldn’t get his effort on target.
After the restart Clitheroe were awarded a penalty when Alex Low brought down Scott Harries and was quickly shown a second yellow having been booked just minutes earlier, though Bakkor rattled

STOCKSBRIDGE - PLAYER PROFILES Sam Andrew - joined Steels midway through last season, a highly regarded goalkeeper who started his career with Sheffield United Jake Lever - came through the junior ranks at Stocksbridge Park Steels, a talented defender who is now into his second season back at the steels. He also represented Shepshed Dynamo while at university in Loughborough. Martyn Scully - now into his second season at the look local stadium, an uncompromising full-back who followed manager Chris Hilton from Worsbrough Bridge. Brandon Cardwell - a reliable centre half who started his career with Sheffield Wednesday before moving onto Sheffield FC, eventually joining the steels early last season Matt Raey - Recent signing from Parkgate, a good old fashioned centre half. He has also played for Belper Town Liam Macfadyen - a solid central defender who signed midway through last season he is also played for Retford United and Worsbrough Bridge Rory Coleman - in his second stint with the steels a talented player comfortable at either fullback or in midfield. His previous clubs include Scunthorpe, Boston United, Gainsborough Trinity and Goole AFC Ryan Laight - Steels Assistant Manager, Ryan started his career
with Barnsley before moving to conference side Tamworth, he has also represented Matlock Town, Ossett Town and Worsborough Bridge amongst others. Harrison Biggins - released by Barnsley in the summer of 2014, Harrison is a central midfielder who featured well in last season, he is the son of former Steels manager Wayne Biggins. Lee Garside - followed Chris Hilton from Worsborough Bridge, Lee is a good old fashioned striker who has had EvoStik experiance with Ossett Town and is capable of scoring spectacular goals. Richard Patterson - a recent signing during the summer, an influential midfielder whose previous clubs include Stavley Miners Welfare, Thackley, and Parkgate he has had more recent Evostik league experience with Ossett Town Corey Gregory - another signing this summer, he started his career with Sheffield United playing over 60 games for the reserves before a move to Stalybridge Celtic, and last season he played for Matlock Town Brad Grayson - signed midway through last season from Goole AFC, Brad is a prolific goalscorer who started his career with Doncaster Rovers, his other clubs include Matlock Town, Ange IF (Sweden), Frickley Athletic, Cumberland United (Australia). Lee Thompson - player coach,

an experienced midfielder who started his career with Sheffield United before moving to Boston United, after a short loan spell, where he made over 90 appearances in division two. A move to conference national team Kidderminster Harriers followed he has also played for Worksop Town, Retford United, and Worksop Parramore. Paul Haigh - signed in February of last year from Shaw Lane Aquaforce a talented midfielder who is also played for Pontefract Collieries. Jack Poulton - another of Chris Hilton’s summer signings a lefthand side player who started his career with Sheffield Wednesday before moving to Sheffield FC and eventually to Handsworth Parramore. Adam Hinchliffe - a central midfielder who was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the start of last season after featuring in their development squad. Danny Critchlow - striker signed from Handsworth Parramore towards the end of last season, he has previously played for Nostell and Tadcaster Albion Louis Shaw - a midfielder who progressed through the under 18’s team, he made his first-team debut at the end of last season. Ben Rhodes - a wide midfielder who featured in last seasons under 18’s he has definitely earned his place in the first-team squad.

Points From the Past OUR look at the FA Amateur Cup last time took us up to the start of the Second World War – some breakaway clubs had earlier turned their backs on the competition but by the end of the war it had been re-established as the trophy all senior amateur sides wanted to win. In the immediate post-war years, attendances at the finals exceeded 50,000 and from 1949 onwards the FA Amateur Cup Final was played at Wembley Stadium. The decision to move to Wembley was justified straight away with crowds of over 90,000 watching the finals with a full house of 100,000 in 1951 to witness Pegasus beating Bishop Auckland 2-1. Pegasus, a team made up of players from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, began to beat all the top amateur clubs in the country and they won the cup again in 1953. Bishop Auckland established several records in the competition with four successive final appearances, three successive final victories and ten wins in total. Unfortunately their team grew old together whilst, at the same time, the availability of quality Pegasus players declined and they disbanded in 1963. Possibly these factors had something to do with the Amateur Cup losing some of its appeal. Crowds at the finals dropped but still attracted at least 40.000 fans. No single club was able to repeat Bishop
Auckland’s string of successes but near neighbours Crook Town did make a number of appearances in the final during the early sixties. However, as the seventies approached, rumours and accusations abounded concerning under-the-counter payments to players and there were allegations that some clubs competing in the competition were not, in the strictest sense of the word, amateur. In order to end the uncertainty, the FA decided to omit the term ‘amateur’ from their rules, all footballers were now to be described as ‘players’. To coincide with this the FA Amateur Cup sadly came to an end, Bishop’s Stortford’s 4-1 victory over Ilford bringing the final curtain down at Wembley on 20 April 1974. Our best performances in the Amateur Cup were in 1952-53 when we went out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkeston in the second round proper, a long trip indeed, and 1960-61 when we bowed out 4-2 at Whitley Bay in the first. The senior amateurs transferred their allegiance to the FA Trophy, already up and running, and the FA Challenge Vase was introduced to look after the rest. Neither of these competitions has attracted the glamour of the FA Amateur Cup at its height.
