SEASON REVIEW W
hen we set out on this journey 18 months ago, we always knew that it was going to be an exciting project, but never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined just how well the inaugural season of Harrogate Town AFC Ladies would be.
Results for the first team are always going to be important, but we are keen to provide the opportunity and support to young female players in the local area to train, play and enjoy football down at the CNG Stadium.
I have said it in numerous interviews this season, but the credit must go to the players and the great team spirit they have generated throughout the season.
The support from all levels of the club, our sponsors CNG, Strata Homes and Henderson Insurance, as well as the support from the Harrogate Advertiser has been, at times, overwhelming.
They have been led in style by skipper Lindsey Whitton, and whether it is training, playing or raising money for charities in the local area, the players have been a credit to the club.
The support from the Board as well as from the supporters has also been much appreciated. The team was also front page of the recent first team match day programme which I can’t imagine happens at many other clubs throughout the UK.
They all understand that Harrogate is a family and community club, and seeing them all signing autographs after the last home game of the season will live in the memory for a long time. Alongside the players, coaches Ben Sadler and Jodie Whitford-Stark have also played a huge part in bringing this team together and developing them to the maximum. They have both been there from the start, and have been outstanding both in training and game situations. The knowledge they have of the game, given their age, is immense and I expect them both to have a huge effect on player development in the future wherever they are involved. Along with the open age team, the Player Development Centre which takes place on a Friday evening has gone from strength to strength. Seeing 20 young female players between the age of 8-15 enjoying “the beautiful game” is a real inspiration and suggest the future for the girl’s game is undoubtedly bright.
And finally, I couldn’t finish these notes without saying a special thank you to kit man, laundry expert, secretary and referee - better known as Ged Maloney. Now, there have been times during the season when he has given some bizarre decisions against us (eg. think offside!!), but I’m willing to let that slide, because of the amazing job he has done to support the team to promote the development of women’s and girl’s football. In closing, it has been a brilliant first year for Harrogate Town AFC Ladies. Success hasn’t come down to one player or performance, it has been a team effort throughout and we all look forward to continuing the progress next season and growing women’s and girls’ football in the Harrogate area. Next season - bring it on!!
