WELCOME TO OUR 11TH ANNUAL BULL SALE! What a ride this year has been and getting snow banks back in the fields and yards is quite a relief. It has been no secret the challenges that this year has put on the livestock industry and its producers. Without a doubt, we cattle producers are the hardest working individuals and need to be extremely proud of our efforts. I recently joined the Manitoba Beef Producers, to do my part to give back to this beef industry. Within a few months, we were experiencing one of worst droughts on record. The MBP team was put to work representing the 6500 producers of Manitoba. Meetings with MLAs, MPs, Ministers, and industry leaders highlighted the important work of the MBP and CCA organizations. The beef industry team is an impressive, talented, highly professional, well-oiled machine and provides us producers a strong voice.
The Manitoba Agri-Recovery program designed to help feed the Manitoba cow herd, has been announced for several months now with the March 15th deadline approaching fast. If you have already entered the program and accessed your portion, great! If not, please take the time to see if you qualify for the funding. Remember as cattle producers, you were all affected by the drought, either lack of feed, water, lower weaning weights, or reduced cull cow prices. If you own a cow, you deserve your share! Now to the bulls! This is again one of the most exciting sets we have put together to date. You will notice a few changes to the offering with 45 two-year-olds on offer this year. We are consistently hearing how great the two-year old bulls have been working out and we are answering your requests to raise more of them. There’s a great selection of calving oriented herd bulls in the offering, never offered for sale before and designed specifically to be two-yearold bulls. The yearling bulls are very consistent in type. Calving ease 1-3 are represented in large numbers allowing you to put together that consistent calf crop. You will notice that our weaning weights are up from the previous year. With the same genetics represented, one would ask why. There are a few reasons for this. First, with the drought, we did pursue a creep feed to make sure the bull calves didn’t suffer from the lack of grass. Secondly, all the cows and calves were back in my yard, as a result of zero grass at the beginning of August. This was when we decided to wean/ weigh early. By doing this, the bulls were adjusted younger, resulting in a higher adjusted number then normal. Once weaned, the bulls went onto our TMR. These bulls aren’t pushed and are developed for longevity. The bulls will remain on this TMR until you need them in the spring. Take a look at the offering and please don’t hesitate to call or message me if you have any questions or concerns. THIS YEAR IS SPECIAL FOR THE STEPPLER FARMS. After nearly 5 decades of breeding Charolais, welcome to the Steppler Farms 11th Annual Bull Sale. This is the largest offering they have put forth and one of the largest Charolais bull sales in Canada. The bulls have been culled hard, so you are getting the top of the production from their large cowherd. Calving ease, structural soundness, with adequate performance, are the selection criteria here and with this many cows, they don’t have time to babysit or put up with problem females. Those cows are culled leaving a very functional set of females raising these herd bulls.
The offering this year is very impressive with more two-year old bulls that aren’t leftovers, but have been held back and developed slowly since weaning to be bulls that will go out, work and last. This gives you the opportunity to buy some really high-quality bulls, with some more age. The yearling bulls cover a wide range of fresh genetics and time proven ones, and all the bulls have been calving ease ranked, so you can select what you need. From bulls that will work in the heifer pen, to those that will give you added performance, there is something here for everyone in volume. Steppler Farms 11th Annual Bull Sale
STEPPLER FARMS BREEDING WARRANTY • You will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2022 bull sale. Steppler Farms will only cover up to a $10,000 investment on a bull. If a buyer wants to cover a more expensive bull, he or she will need to deal with their own outside insurance. • Buyer will receive a backup bull to get their cows bred at zero charge to the buyer. • The backup bull must be returned by the customer to Steppler Farms by October 1st.
• All bulls sold through the 2022 bull sale are covered for injury and death 6 months after the March 14th bull sale date with ZERO PREMIUM. • The buyer must contact Steppler Farms immediately to ensure coverage is within the 6-month warranty date. • A ll injured bulls become the property of Steppler Farms and a signed transferable registration paper must accompany the bull upon return. • If requested, injured bulls must be checked by a certified vet and this report shared with Steppler Farms.
STEPPLER FARMS HERD BULL GUARANTEE • Bulls must be returned to Steppler Farms with a satisfactory body condition score, with a signed transferable registration paper. Steppler Farms reserves the right to deduct from the sales credit for any bull returned with a body condition score lower than 3. Steppler Farms also assumes full possession of the returned bull.
We want to make sure the sale bull you purchase meets your requirements. Not all bulls work out as hoped. Steppler Farms sale bulls have met the following requirements in our goal of ensuring customer satisfaction when you purchase a sale bull: • A ll bulls have passed a semen evaluation and are sold with a semen report.

CALVING EASE RANK The majority of cattlemen’s programs have changed in the past decade; with larger cattle herds and more calves born on grass, calving assists must be minimal. Calving ease has always been an important consideration in our breeding program, so we have included a calving ease score to help you select your next herd sires. We provide in the catalogue actual birthweights, and birthweight and calving ease EPDs. Before selecting your next sire, first evaluate your cow herd and breeding program and know the type of bulls that work for you. All bulls should sire calves with high levels of vigour at birth, with the majority being born unassisted as long as the bulls are used on the recommended cow type. I should note that we run several different types and ages of females, so we have used bulls on all 4 levels of our calving ease score. By using our calving ease score, you get my best evaluation of a bull’s calving ability, so we have included a calving ease ranking to help you select your next herd sires.
Phenotype How the bull is made. Structural soundness for calving ease. Smooth shouldered smaller head, degree of bone, balance. Gestation Days between conception and birth date. Maternal calving ease Pedigree - How predictable and consistent has the pedigree been for calving. Ex - Inconsistency can come from a larger birthweight grandmother. Actual Birthweight and Calving Ease Each calf is weighed, and a calving ease score given at time of birth. Environment •W eather and nutrition of dam in the last 30 days of gestation. Calves’ birthweights and calving ease can be substantially different when comparing calves born the 1st of January to those born the 1st of March. • Outside factors affecting the calf ’s actual data (Twin, placenta issues, dam injury, etc.).

He has done exactly that, while maintaining the efficient calving ease. El Paso is heavy haired, sound footed and carries that extra muscle shape. The El Paso females are very consistent in their type, feminine and correct. El Paso is a top senior herdsire here!
We acquired two of the high selling yearlings in the Beck Charolais bull sale in 2019, Beck’s Charm 867F and Beck’s Baron 880F and these two females are teasers for what these two bulls can do. When touring our mature bull pasture, its hard to miss Charm. Simply put, he’s different. This is a power bull who’s heavy haired and extremely character made. He’s just what we wanted to inject into the bull battery.

Flagstaff was acquired from Harcourt Charolais to breed our Braxton daughters. He has done a tremendous job giving us that added shape and easy doingness. Correct structure, with the added calving ease, makes this sire group a great option for calving on grass.
Sparrows Legendary has become a staple here in our extensive AI program. When selecting which herd bull to AI to, Legendary has been an easy go to. Homo polled, long spined, and calves so well. Check out his curve bending EPDs. -1.9 on BW, and follows up with the 118 YW. Calving and performance! When touring through the Sparrow program again this spring, Josie pointed put Legendary’s dam. I was completely sold on Legendary again. What a female! Legendary will continue to add the strong maternal strengthens we strive for.

Whiplash was brought up to run in our heifer pen. We were looking for a reliable calving ease sire that could efficiently calve out a large group of heifers each year while providing us great daughters. Whiplash has done exactly that.
We bought Braxton because we believed he had the potential to take our cow herd to the next level. By teaming up with Beck Farms, SK, we were able to purchase this breed leader who was the highest selling bull in Canada that year. Braxton is one of the most impressive bulls we have ever walked at Steppler Farms. Braxton is so fluid in his stride; he is quiet, deep chested, huge hipped, with perfect structure, and he comes from a tremendous cow. The calving ease in this sire is second to none. The calves have a tremendous amount of vigour at birth and never look back. The Braxton females are simply awesome.

We purchased Winchester from Pro-Char Charolais to run in our heifer pen and what a job he has done for us. Winchester was recently purchased by CK Sparrow Farms and will continue his consistency in calving ease. We probably didn’t realize when we bought Winchester, how great a female maker he would become The Winchester females are simply awesome. The whole sire group is consistent in their moderate frame, easy doing ability, sound structure and are already laying down that cattleman’s udder. The Winchesters calved efficiently and are great mother cows, with ample milk and beautiful udder structures. Winchesters are such functional females that can do so much for the industry.

Steppler Magnum 99G was sold through our sale in 2020 to Turnbull Charolais. We retained in-herd use for our extensive heifer sync. We wanted to add back the Winchester x Jacksonville influence and with the added calving ease Steppler Magnum was an easy decision.

BULL MANAGEMENT PULL YOUR BULL AND PROVIDE PROPER NUTIRITION ACCORDINGLY The most important management practice for ensuring your bulls’ next year service is to pull them from the cows. all bulls will perform better and recondition more efficiently if they are pulled and fed the proper nutrition to regain lost weight, grow and put on needed muscle for the following year. Work with your nutritionist to develop the right ration for your bulls. Having your younger bulls away from your mature bulls is also well worth the investment. Younger bulls can be built up more effectively and the mature bulls won’t get over conditioned.
GET YOUR BULL SETTLED IN Bulls can sometimes have difficulties settling into a new environment. Different feed, management practices and climate all contribute to new stressors for the bull. If you want your bull to reach his highest breeding potential, it is important to get him a few weeks prior to breeding to make this transition easier. If you don’t have an extra pen or space, sometimes this just isn’t a reality and a box stall in the old barn doesn’t count as a pen for the bull. VALUATE BREEDING AND RE-EVALUATE HIS E BREEDING SOUNDNESS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON With yearlings and virgin two-year olds, we need to make sure they can effectively breed a cow. Time and patience are essential! If your breeding season happens on grass, this evaluation becomes more difficult, but due diligence will aid in preventing lost time and open cows. Take the time to evaluate the bull throughout the breeding season. If you suspect an issue, contact me immediately. Back up bulls are always on hand.
EMEN TESTING BULLS AFTER THE SALE S With such an early bull sale we have decided to semen test the bulls after the bull sale. With the majority of the bulls not going to work until end of the spring, a later semen check date will evaluate the fertility of the bull at the correct time. Two dates have already been booked for semen evaluation: end of March and end of April. We will also semen check any bull immediately after the sale if requested. All bulls will have scrotal measurement on sale day.
RECHECK SEMEN AND RE-EVALUATE BREEDING SOUNDNESS THE FOLLOWING YEAR Leading up to the next breeding season, it is important to recheck semen and the bull’s ability to breed. Injuries and damage from our cold winters can greatly affect the bull’s breeding potential.

HEALTH PROTOCOL & NUTRITION Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated mating’s. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70-75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28-day AI program, the herd bulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herd bulls finish the job. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days o`f the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out. We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. This enables us to have a successful breeding program and ensures potential buyers of the high health standards of these sale cattle. TERMS & CONDITIONS
TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made.
BIDDING: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.
DISPUTES: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made.
BREEDER GUARANTEE – FEMALES: As per the Canadian Charolais Association Code of Ethics, copies available at the settlement desk can picked up by the buyer at any time. EXCEPTION GUARANTEE: In case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. ACCIDENTS: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager,
auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property. By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer.
