This is where we normally update you on all of the adventures of the year, but this year’s welcome will be a bit shorter as the world shut down the day after last years sale and the adventures for this year were a lot closer to home and a bit more low key than in the past. 2020 had its challenges and it was a year that forced us to think outside the box and adapt to changes on a moment’s notice.

One of the things that did stay the same is Becky and Doug were asked to judge a 4-H show, what changed is that they did most of it from the comfort of the living room with all of the heifers being judged via videos submitted by members. The steer portion of the show was judged without the members present and with the steers loose in pens.

On another unusual note we put up our first cut of hay in early July without turning on any form of irrigation! One storm alone brought us five inches of rain. This gave us time to plan our yearly appreciation BBQ to thank all of the people who help make this sale run. With restrictions easing up we had a bit of a twist to our yearly BBQ, our neighbour Tom Machacek born and raised in Taber, faced off against our new vet Corey Davis, recently imported from the Maritimes, in the Great West vs East Grill Master Challenge.

Both were supplied a beef brisket and applied their best smoking techniques. All the food was tremendous and at the end of the day the east won out by only one extra vote.

As for an update on fall shows, there were none, so Doug went hunting for two weeks at the end of November. He didn’t come back with any game but did bring back a bunch of stories, which seem to change occasionally. Cheryl took those two weeks to enjoy a relaxing weekend at home interrupted only by her full-time job, feeding bulls twice a day, and keeping up on the farm bookwork.

Most of you will know that we lost Doug’s father, Hank, last March, but we continue to see his influence in our program. Doug’s mom Ruth is still living on the farm and as feisty as ever, at 86 she is still happy to cook for a crew (or at least still does it when we ask), but can usually be found knitting up a storm in her rocking chair.

We do not know exactly what the sale will look like this year based on covid restrictions but it will be held at home in a heated facility. All animals will be on display outside the sale barn and the sale will be broadcast on DLMS. The bulls are available for viewing anytime so please give Doug a call or stop by if you would like to walk through. As always, we will have people on hand to take your phone bids as well if you are more comfortable bidding that way. HEALTH & FERTILITY Our cows are on a Crystlyx mineral program all year long. We believe it assist in cows being bred on the first cycle and calves holding a bloom in the fall when pastures begin to dry. At weaning time the calves are exposed to Crystalyx which helps them to get onto feed with minimal stress. All bulls were treated September 2nd with Pyramid FP5+Presponse, Ultrabac 7/Somubac and Bovimectin. Bulls and fully tested, guaranteed and semen evaluations, scrotal measurements and current weights will be available sale day. Our bulls are hand-fed each day by bucket making them quiet and easy to handle. delivery options Leaving Bulls at the Farm: If you are not prepared to take your bull home at sale time, we are more than happy to keep them on feed free of charge up till May 1st.

We highly recommend bulls be insured by the purchaser if remaining at the farm as ownership transfers to the buyer at time of sale.

Delivery of bulls: We provide free trucking for the bulls up to a 200 mile radius, beyond that we will work with you to have your bull delivered.

Delivery of Heifers: Due to a very limited corral space we require the heifers to be removed as soon as possible. If they cannot be removed sale day, let us know and we will help you make arrangements.

Consigned by Ben Penner The Penner consignment of black Simmental/Angus cross, which comes from a one owner herd as well, and are due to calve from February 15 - March 15. There is a total of 13 heifers and the number of pairs at the sale will be determined by how many calved at that time.

Consigned by Tall Land & Cattle Tom & Darla have never disappointed us with the quality of open heifers they have offered up for our sale. They are a Red Angus cross heifer, sired from CD Land & Cattle bulls and coming from a closed herd. These females have been treated with Ultrabac 7, BoviShield Gold One Shot and Ivomec. The first of March they will be boosted with Ivomec and palpated and weights will be available sale day. You can feel very confident when adding these replacement heifers to your herd.

Consigned by Cam & Lynn Morris We are very excited to have the addition of open heifers from the reputable cattle herd of Cam & Lynn Morris. The Morris’s pride themselves in purchasing top quality livestock and it is shown in this lot. The heifers have had two doses of Inforce 3, Ultrabac 7 / Somubac, Bovi-Shield Gold, and Ivomec in the fall. At time of printing they weighed 720lbs so should be around 800lbs by sale time and they will be palpated before the sale.
