Greetings Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Cattlemen (and women),

First of all, and most importantly, a huge thank-you, to everyone for your support in the past with the purchase of our bulls or bred or replacement females and the positive feedback on how our cattle have worked for all of you.

Also a “huge” thanks to all the guys (and gals) who help us get the bulls ready for pictures and for the sale and a “shout out” to all of your moms and dads for raising such a great group of kids.

We are extremely excited and proud of the bulls we have on offer this year and we are exactly where we want to be with the addition of the black cattle into our program a few years back. We strive hard to grow our bulls on a high roughage ration and are very careful not to over feed them. It keeps our weights a bit lower than some of our fellow breeders but our customers keep telling us our bulls look good in the fall because they don’t “melt” down – and ruining a great bull by overfeeding him is something we just cannot live with. These bulls are ready to go to work for you. And the fact that we select only the “top” bull calves, from a 400 cow herd, ensures you are getting the “best” we have to offer. Our cows are culled hard for disposition, soundness, udder quality and performance and we continue to work hard every year to improve a herd we are already extremely proud of.

And calving ease sires for your heifers, as always, is a main priority.

2018 was a very “interesting” year, to say the least, and if you want to grab yourself a good hankie, and pour yourself a tall stiff one, I’ll tell you a little bit about it. Never in my 58 years (and we’ve got a lot of neighbors a lot older than myself who said the same) have I ever seen so much “MUD” as our poor little calves had to muck through last spring. And although they would have been better off born with pontoons, than feet, those little guys persevered, and stayed healthy, although I don’t think it helped much with our wean weights, and finally made it to summer pastures. We found the highest point on the farm and set up a completely new sorting facility to sort our herd into breeding groups and were relieved to know they could finally find a dry place to lie down once they were on pastures. Our focus then shifted to salvaging our 2016 crop which had been snowed under, as it had been too wet to harvest in the fall of 2016, (crop insurance had to drive on swaths last June with their quads to get from one hill to another as the fields were even too wet for quads – they eventually did write them off though). Some folks then burned their 2016 crops so they could replant last spring but we decided to wait (as it was already pretty late for seeding) and the fields finally dried out enough so we could bale the salvage crop in July. Then it was haying season – we did get about 1 week to take off a month’s worth of feed without rain, but most of it had between 2 and 8 inches of rain on it. Long story short – we finally did seed about 300 acres of mixed grain for silage in July (2/3 of that was too wet to harvest this fall), we did salvage about 750 bales of 2016 barley, we silaged some weeds and volunteer crop from unseeded fields and we’re tub grinding everything to get our herd through the winter.

Good news is though – we’ve got “Angus” cattle. Of the nearly 500 females we exposed last summer we did not have 10 open – the best year we’ve ever had! (We had our first 300 calves this spring in just over 4 weeks). The November snow we had last fall melted in December and the 200 acres of greenfeed we could not harvest were grazed by our herd until January 25th, the salvaged barley and rained on hay were tub ground and fed 1/3 – 1/3 -1/3 with the “weeds” and greenfeed we did silage last summer and we currently sit with more calves on the ground than cows calved. And if it ever quits snowing and raining we might even be able to get some crop in this spring. Don’t get me wrong, rain is good, it’s just that sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. . . . And we’ve got a wedding coming up this summer. The Good Lord does work in mysterious ways.

In an effort to make things as easy as possible for us hosting the sale and to facilitate the viewing of the bulls without a full sale facility, we have decided to offer a Video Sale again this year. For the sale the video clip will play on the big screen as the bulls are sold. This sale format was very successfull last year and at other operations, and we feel this is the best way to keep stress low on the cattle.

Basically, the only difference from a traditional bull sale is that the cattle will not physically walk through the sale ring. The bulls will be displayed at the bull farm just 1/2 mile away. This will allow you to view the bulls prior to the sale and then come up to the hall for lunch and the sale. If you have any questions about the sale format please give us a phone call.

All bulls will have a scrotal measurement, vet examination and have passed a semen test prior to the sale. All veterinary work will be completed by Whitecourt Vet Clinic Dr. B. Zygadlo.

100% Guarantee: All bulls are guaranteed to be satisfactory breeders in accordance with CAA guidelines. Should a problem occur, barring physical injury or mismanagement, a bull of equal value will be provided or a credit will be issued towards the purchase of another bull. Bull Development & Delivery: Option A: Bulls can be picked up at Anchor 1 on sale day and a $50 discount will be deducted from purchase price on all bulls picked up by the buyers on, or within a week or so of, sale day.

Option B: At the buyer’s option and risk, the bulls can stay at Anchor 1 and will be delivered within 250 km of Mayerthorpe. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. This will be done at the convenience of Anchor 1.

Option C: Anchor 1 will keep the bulls free of charge until May 1st. At this time the buyer must pick up bulls from the farm.

High seller at Brooking’s 2016 sale at $125,000 and he is surely worth every penny. He sires extremely uniform calves with unlimited performance. We purchased a bull from Blair’s Ag, back in 2010, hoping to get a calving ease bull with performance and style. Performance and style he had in “spades” but his birthweights were suited better for the cow herd than the heifers. Then we AI’d one of his daughters to a Rob Roy 122K son, Rob Roy 22P, out of a beautiful Pasquia Lassie daughter, and 34A is absolutely outstanding. He is as dark red as they come and at 5 years old Limitless still stands on a perfect set of feet and is one of the most athletic efficient breeders we have ever walked. This spring Limitless managed to breed 50 cows in six weeks and never seemed to be fatigued. Terms & Conditions TERMS The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made.

BID Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No private sales will be allowed except as otherwise provided for in the terms and conditions. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.

DISPUTES In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

PURCHASER’S RISK Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautionedto pay attention to any such announcements.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY The proper Registration or Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

SHIPPING Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale but no risk is assumed by Sales Management or Seller. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instructions when making settlement.

GUARANTEE All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the Canadian Angus Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal.

EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.

ACCIDENTS Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sales Management, auctioneer, or Association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.
