Hello to all! This year marks our 19th Annual sale and year 10 of being involved for me. In the 10 years we've seen record high prices twice within the industry, but this time I think it might have a longer life span than the last time. There are so many things in the cow/calf sector which puts the cow guys in a good situation. For the third year in a row, the Canadian cowherd has declined annually and yet there still seems to be a strong demand for beef. With rising cattle prices, we've seen input costs also rise - I feel it is more important than ever to have low maintenance cows. We've tried to find a balance between high maternal, low maintenance cattle and cattle that create interest with the buyers.

Last spring we had a huge opportunity to have a sort of Ivan's cow herd. Ivan has AI'd extensively to many of the breed-leading sires over the last 30 years. Our hope is with a broader gene pool and more cows to breed, we can continue to supply more of the high maternal bred bulls but add some more performance to our bull offering every year. In this year's offering, we will have 5 yearling bulls that were off the cows we purchased in the spring. Our 2 year olds on offer have been developed the same as always - weaned in the fall, lightly backgrounded over the winter, then to summer grazing on a sanfoin & cicer milkvetch grass; they then return home in the fall to free choice hay and pellets.

Our cows graze fairly rough terrain and require good feet, structural soundness to cover long distances for water, keep condition, raise a good calf, and breed back in a timely fashion. The cows graze as long as we can in the fall. Normally, come mid November the cows are on to winter feeding that consists of a straight hay diet. We encourage everyone to come out to look at the bulls and cowherd anytime! In December of 2002, Harvey Bowerman & John Setrakov travelled to Ohlde Cattle Co in Palmer, Kansas.

OCC Legacy 839L was purchased along with 5 other bulls. At that time, Legacy was a standout amongst many other high caliber bulls of the Ohlde breeding program. Legacy was the greatest son of OCC Echelon, a full brother to OCC Emblazon, although both bulls were very similar, Echelon was regarded for his calving ease. Legacy was a natural calf out of a top OCC Anchor daughter, Dixie Erica 960E. Ohlde Cattle Company retained an Amercan semen interest, while partners Bowerman Bros Angus Ranch, Hillfire Ranching, and Crowfoot Cattle Co owned 100% of the Canadian semen rights. Bowerman Bros and Hillfire Ranching had 100% walking rights.

Legacy exhibited intelligence, character, and the ability to maintain himself under range conditions; he exceled at all of these traits and passed them on to his offspring. Legacy was extremely good-natured and this shows still in many of his daughters. The picture of Legacy is of him as a 5 year old in September 2006, after natural service of 98 females over 2 breeding seasons in Northen Saskatchewan.

Legacy was a “jack-of-all-trades”; at first glimpse, phenotype was an easy observation - but it went deeper than phenotype. He put incredible udders on his daughters, many of those daughters produced

well into their mid-teens. The progeny of Legacy had unmatched feet, with superior heel and claw structure. Many of his sons were still covering cows after 7 years of age. If you were looking for a bull who would sire easy-fleshing progeny with great feet and udders, added longevity, and fertility - Legacy checked all of the boxes.

When Legacy came to Bowerman Bros and Hillfire Ranching, he was crossed on many Johnston Nugget 370E daughters. Nugget 370E was a son of Nugget 801X of JRS out of N Bar Kinochtry Beauty 7393 - Harvey said this cross was magical. Over the years, Legacy was crossed with many Nugget daughters and granddaughters. The Legacy sons topped their annual bull sale for many years and grandsons of Legacy carried on to be highly sought after as well. Legacy had a positive impact on the breed from coast to coast in Canada, as well as North & South America. OCC Legacy 839L passed away of natural causes due to kidney failure on October 2nd, 2012. Although he has been deceased for over a decade, his lasting impacts have been left in many herds. His granddaughters and great-granddaughters carry on many of his attributes. Legacy was a true breeding masterpiece who will always be highly regarded and a bull that can always take you back to the basics to correct an ever changing breed.

90% of our cows trace back to this highly sought after sire; once for sure, many 2-4 times.

OCC Legacy 839L has had a lasting impression on our cow herd. His daughters have the ability to adapt and thrive in tougher conditions and mature to high functioning 1300lb cows or flourish in high production operations as 1500lb cows.

Age of Dam: 4 92K's maternal granddam has created a fair bit of interest in the last 5 years in Canada. 92H's sire, LD Capitalist 316, needs no introduction. We saw him last year at World West Sires and he looked incredible at 10 years of age. 92K is a wide-based, longspined bull who has been a pleasure to watch grow. He has so much style and class with lots of spring of rib. Definitely a bull who could be a herd bull prospect!

26K's dam's maternal brother was our 2017 high seller and went on to work for VeeTee Angus. 26K has the same attributes that could make him a high seller also. This long-bodied, moderate-made bull has so much style. His full sibling did an amazing job on her 1st calf last year.

21K's dam is a maternal sister to many of our high-selling bulls in the past. From the time 21K was a calf, he looked like a bull. 21K would be on the larger end of the bulls in the pen.

We used Boss the 1st year of heifers, on the 2nd year we put some cows with him. When used on heifers, he sired low-birthweight calves - when used on cows he had strong, wide-topped calves that grew. This bull caught my eye all summer on grass. 22K is a thick-made, deep bull loaded with muscle.

10K's mother was struck by lightning when he was 78 days old. This bull has done extremely well for himself. Very similar type of bull as Lot 17.

91S has had many outstanding progeny - to the benefit of our bull customers, most of her natural calves ended up being bulls. Knowing that anything she was bred made for an exceptional calf, we decided to flushed her to SAV Density 004 when she was 8 years old then again to TC Aberdeen 759 a few years later. In 2020, at the age of 14, she was sold to Minburn Angus as a flush cow & has went on to produce a number of embyros for them before being sold to Leeuwenburgh Angus. We're proud that she has went on to produce exceptional matings for other breeders!

Many of the bulls in our sale this year have 91S somewhere in their pedigree. We only wish we could make them all like her!

Nesset Lake Angus

Welcome to our 19th Annual All Black Bull Sale! All aspects of the livestock industry look promising for the next several years. The cow numbers are down all across Canada and the US so this shows signs of strong prices in the future. Remember we are getting paid by the pound for our calves or yearlings so selecting a top notch bull from proven genetics is relatively inexpensive and will pay off dividends in the long run.

We have decided it is time to slow down abit and cut back the workload so you will notice there are less bulls in the sale this year. It seems like yesterday but was 30 years ago, that we sent our first 2 bulls to the Saskatchewan Livestock Centre in Regina. We sold some purebred pairs to Blair and Lacey and commercial cows to Sheldon and Lori. So this years offerings are from the younger cows and the older proven elite cows that have stood the test of time. With that being said, the pack of bulls are top tier and from all great maternal lines.

We select sires for a balance of performance, calving ease, fleshing ability and strong maternal traits. This fall we weaned September 25th after very little rain in June, it turned the tap off in July and there was basically no rain the rest of the summer. It is amazing how good the pastures came back after abit of rain in the fall and ended up with excellent pastures and average haycrops. The bulls have been fed Masterfeeds Bull ration and free choice hay.

They have been vaccinated spring and pre-weaning with Bovi-Shield BVD One Shot vaccine and Inforce 3 to aid in the prevention of respiratory issues.

Ranch life continues to keep us busy and is a great way of life. We are so fortunate to have children and grandchildren who love this as well. Chris continues to drive truck in the oilfield around Smiley and Jenna is busy at home with their 3 girls – Madison in Grade 7, Jordynn in Grade 6 and Kaycee in Grade 2. The girls are in Horse 4-H and other various school activities. They enjoy coming to Meadow Lake to help with branding, hauling cows, weighing, and other ranch activities. Lacey and Blair are busier than ever with another little girl in July and that same month we were also blessed with a new little great-grandson!

The 2023 southeast Angus Tour was another great event to attend. Blair and I also attended the Montana Angus Tour in September around Billings. It was great to see the progeny from top Angus sires and some of the big Angus herds that you read about. At both events we saw a lot of great cattle, were fed exceptionally well, and it was so nice seeing many old friends and meeting new ones!

We attended Agribition in November and were awarded the 2024 Honourary Saskatchewan Angus President Award. We were very humbled and honoured to receive this award and continue to be part of this amazing industry!

A standout bull who will make a herdsire prospect. Big volume type of bull with a strong hindquarter and stands very correct on his feet and legs. He’s out of the Ellingson Profound bull – we’re very pleased with the first set of progeny – both the bulls and females. His dam is a 2013 model Forte daughter, the Forte females have been standout females here.

231B has been an exceptional producer for us – her calves always had lots of pop and natural thickness. Her dam 221S was purchased from the Double AA dispersal and produced till she was 14 years – many of our females trace back to her. 231B’s sire was a home-raised bull off of one of our top cows – he always sired calves with lots of length and pop. Her calves were always ones that we looked forward to hitting the ground! She had a beautiful Sitz Logic daughter that sold in the 2018 Frontline sale to Windy Willows Farms; the bull calf pictured below sold in the 2018 bull sale to Holbrook Angus as a herdsire. 231B was injured last spring, so we decided to send her to be flushed – getting 42 #1 embryos in 2 flushes. Guarantee one pregnancy. Embryos stored at DRI.
