Welcome from Leewood Ranch On behalf of everyone at Leewood, I’d like to welcome you to the 8th Leewood Ranch Bull & Female sale offering.

Leewood Ranch is a mixed farming operation. For 2023 we seeded 1400ac of crop and ran 450 head of Simmental cattle. We have approximately 250 purebred cows and 200 commercial cows that we run as one group. The herd is bred for early January calving and we calve everything together. Purebreds are treated like any other cows on the place and no matter the price tag only the good ones get to stay. Our cows run on private pasture and community pastures in large groups.

We use our strong bull battery along with AI and embryo implanting to maintain / improve our herd. Embryos are sourced from many of the top herds in the industry, along with embryos from our own donor dams. We use a variety of AI sires and do our best to source bulls we know will work. We will be selling 80-100 commercial replacement heifers in smaller packages this year.

If you need a bull but don’t have the time to come to the sale we can help. Leewood Ranch is a family run operation. We are the guys that do the foot work in our operation from the feeding to the breeding. Call ahead of the sale and we can discuss what you need or want in your next herd sire. We will select a bull that will fit your operation, at your price point. The saying with us is “We’d rather keep our buyers happy than look for new ones each year.”

Leewood Ranch Guarantee

Leewood Ranch Bull Protection

-For bulls returning to the Ranch we suggest that the bulls be insured. Each animal becomes the responsibility of the buyer as soon as sold -Heifers are to be picked up ASAP. We’ve had heifers go to customers in BC to Manitoba, so if buyers need a little time to set up trucking we understand.

-Deliveries will start around April 1, at our convenience.

-Bulls will be delivered free of charge to central points across the western provinces.

We do our best to deliver your bull to your yard.

-Bulls traveling to the eastern provinces and for export will have trucking arranged at cost; unless other arrangements are made.

All bulls are guaranteed to be satisfactory breeders in accordance with the Simmental association guidelines. We stand behind our product. Should a problem occur please contact us and we will make it right. A replacement bull (of equal quality), a credit or reimbursement will be given. We will make sure you have a bull to breed your cows.

Any physical injury or mismanagement of the bull(s), will void any reimbursement.

Bull-Breeding Soundness

USA & Mexico Export

We at Leewood Ranch will arrange for all tests and paper work required to export these bulls at cost to their new owners. It usually takes several weeks to get these tests completed and results back. Transportation will also be arranged at cost.

All bulls will be semen tested before the sale. Bulls are tested for sperm motility, morphology and are also subjected to a physical exam. They are checked for any scrotal, penis and other physical problems that would affect their ability to breed. Any bulls failing these tests will not be at the sale. Any semen deferred bulls have been tested and have been deemed by the vet to mostly likely pass a semen test at a later date. These bulls usually fail, due to age or weather problems.

Bull Selection Assistance

Feed & Development

Purchasing breeding stock is a major part of raising livestock. Photos and videos are great tools, but don’t always tell the whole truth. If there are any questions on sires, dams, CE , WW, milk, etc. please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We can help narrow your search or point you to a bull that suits your needs.

Bulls are started on TMR after weaning in September.

The TMR consists of triticale silage, hay, cereal straw, rolled oats and mash from Bullseye Feeds (minerals and protein). After the sale; bulls are fed the same ration until they are delivered. We want bulls to continue to develop and to look as good sale day or better when we deliver.

Health

All bulls will be vet checked, scrotal measured, weighed and semen tested. All sale cattle are on a full heath program. Our calves receive vitamin AD&E and Selenium at birth. Around a week of age calves receive the vaccine Bovilis Nasalgen. Before being turned out on grass calves are given Vira Shield 6 + Somnus and Covexin Plus. At weaning bulls are given Vista Once SQ, Vision 8 Somnus. Any questions on health protocols please contact Leewood Ranch.

Polled Testing

A select number of bulls will be Homo Polled tested.

Homo polled = no horns on any Calves Hetero polled = 50% polled calves on horned cows

Colour Testing

Some black bulls will be tested for colour expression. Homo black bulls will not sire any red calves. The fullbloods and a select few red bulls will be diluter tested. Bulls testing diluter free can be crossed with black cows and will not give you any grey calves.

Semen Reserve

We reserve the right to draw semen for in herd use on any bull in the sale offering. Semen will be at our expense and buyer’s convenience.

Epd`s

Epd`s are basically a Mathematical estimation of a animals genetic value. They are not always right but they can help in choosing your breeding stock. Below is a list of the epd`s and what they stand for.

It is a pleasure working with the great people from Leewood Ranch. They are some of the most progressive Simmental breeders utilizing an extensive AI and embryo transfer program.

The cowherd utilizes a customized mineral program that is balanced to their differing requirements and feed sources throughout the year. Organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health, which supports proper bull calf development from a young age. The bulls are developed on grass with their

moms. After weaning, they are transitioned to a forage-based TMR. The TMR is formulated to maximize gut health and forage utilization. Multiple protein sources and the correct starch levels allow for proper lean muscle growth. Leewood Ranch uses a total nutrition program on their entire operation, ensuring optimal performance of their cattle.
