WOW… What a difference a year makes! As I was writing this invitation last year, we were having record snowfall and record low temps. We all know what record snowfall and spring moisture means. What a Grass year! God kept on blessing with cool summer temps and a booming hay crop. The hay wasn’t the only thing Growing at a high rate, the calves in this year’s sale have been good from day 1. Their health has been excellent and they have grown and done everything just as we would hope. I’ve never been more comfortable offering a group of bulls to you guys than this set. In addition to these bulls knocking it out of the park in their development, They are Stout, sound, Good looking cattle with tremendous foot quality and Genetic Value. We think our balanced approach is paying off.

On another note, we are calving the first homeland daughters right now. HOLY COW and I mean COW! They have been absolutely perfect. The maternal instinct in them, the utter quality and their size and structure is everything any of us would hope for. They lay down, calve, get up and take care of the calf and do it all while acting and looking like a COW should.

I sure hope all of you can make it on Friday the 15th of March. Whether you need a bull or not, we Love seeing everyone and talking cattle. The cattle business is in such a Great spot right now and I hope all of you are enjoying the same Optimism and enthusiasm we are.

The more we look under the hood of these cattle using Genomics and the latest science available the better and more predictable we are making these bulls. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

a Complete Breeding Soundness Exam. However, all bulls should still be rechecked as close to turnout as possible. All bulls are guaranteed for fertility and genetic soundness for their first breeding season. If the bull is proven to be a non-breeder for fertility or a genetically caused soundness condition, we will replace the bull with a satisfactory replacement or issue credit of the purchase price minus the salvage value to be used in future sales. This guarantee does not cover injury, infectious disease, mismanagement, neglect and/or death. We ask that you contact us immediately before culling or disposing of the bull should anything occur. A signed veterinary statement and/or BSE form will be required. Bulls are not guaranteed to freeze semen unless an agreement is reached prior to the sale.

We have done our best to represent the sale offering as they are, however our Customer Satisfaction Guarantee protects you against getting cattle that are not what you thought they were. If you have a problem with an animal, it’s our problem. We are the only ones who can fix it, so please contact us and give us a chance to help.

Option 1 - $100 off bulls hauled home the weekend of the sale.

Option 2 - Bulls delivered to Wyoming and surrounding states for free. We will begin coordinating free delivery the week after the sale.

• Option 3 - Bulls may be kept free of charge past their scheduled delivery date at buyer’s request. They may be picked up at the buyer’s convenience on or before April 1. Bulls kept past April 1 will be charged $3 per head per day.

• Option 4 - We will work with buyers of bulls that do not qualify for free delivery.

We will help as much as possible to get these bulls delivered as inexpensive as we can.

From the Sale Manager Welcome to the 2024 Black Summit Cattle annual bull sale. What a set of bulls? This offering is their best yet. The LaFollette’s have invested decades of breeding to produce this excellent set of bulls for your selection. When you come to Black Summit Cattle Co you can expect to find cattle that work in our western environment. They put extensive selection pressure on structure, udder quality, and fertility and they want these traits in a package that is phenotypically correct. When you view this set of bulls you will see that they represent what you come to expect from Simmental and SimAngus genetics like muscle and performance, but what makes this program excel is that these bulls are in a very eye appealing and correct package. These bulls will produce calves that add pounds, and their daughters will make top of the line replacement females. Not to mention they will do all of this along with producing cattle that have the eye appeal to catch the attention of the most discriminating buyer, after all 90% of the time through the chain buying decisions are based off what buyer see visually. So, with all the great data and tools that we have today we can’t forget about cattle that have the ideal look, and this set of bulls has it. However, these bulls are not just phenotypic standouts they have checked all the boxes for all the data that Black Summit collects to continue genetic improvement. We are experiencing some of the best times in the history of the cattle business. 2023 set new price records and it appears that we will see new records in 2024. Our nation’s cow herd is at the lowest inventory since records have been kept. There is tremendous opportunity for producers who are able and willing to take advantage of these high prices. However, it is critical that when we rebuild this nation’s cow herd that we do it with the right kind of cattle. As we make females for the future, we must not loose sight that the consumer wants to purchase and eat high quality beef.

We also need to keep in mind that with higher priced females we need to purchase and produce cows that will be productive for a long time. The quality of cattle in the Black Summit program will get you there.

When we bought Homeland we were on a mission to find a bull that would not only move our numbers into an elite category but that had enough look as not to sacrifice years of selection for high quality females. He hasn’t disappointed us. The Homeland calves across the country have found their way to the front of sale catalogs and sale orders consistently. His sons are stout, good footed, sound cattle with moderate birth, above breed average growth and top tier carcass numbers. Maybe the biggest surprise has been his daughters. They have matured into moderate, deep side, soft flanked cows that are bold ribbed and impeccable in their build. What does “Good Cattle” mean to you?

Traveling as a college judging coach and a seedstock producer you get the opportunity to visit a lot of great operations and pick the brains of the best cattleman this country has to offer. It’s always been interesting to me how many different meanings the phrase “Good Cattle” can have. The term is used totally different by the guy that just Ave. $7,000 on his 200 hd bull sale from the feedlot owner that’s feeding a pen of steers that are converting like champions. Even a bigger contrast might be between the show cattle guy that just won Denver and the Grass and cake guy that wants his cows no bigger than a 1000 lbs and can live on sage brush and rabbit tracks. Amazingly enough the saying is applicable, in it’s varying meanings, to all these guys for different reasons. Each one feels like their kind of “Good Cattle” are the key to profitability.

I ask why “Good Cattle” have to be one or another?

Why can’t we raise cattle that are structurally sound, big footed and good moving that can cover country and breed cows?

Why can’t we raise cattle that are 3 dimensional enough in their build to grow, convert feed and kill like “good cattle “can?

Why can’t we raise cattle that are built good enough to look like “good cattle” do and maternal enough to stay in the herd like “Good Cattle” should?

The answer is, we do and you can!

At Black Summit Cattle we are 100% committed to providing bulls with the genetic value and Quality to sire “Good Cattle” for you. We use genomically enhanced EPDs along with Right Choice technology to identify the cattle that have the ability to be seedstock. Once they are identified to have the genetics to be of value to you, they are evaluated on quality and structure. We believe “good cattle” are good looking because they’re built right. “Good Cattle” are laid back in their shoulder, good hipped and soft legged. They’re big footed, bold ribbed and stout pinned. They’re long, wide and deep!

We use selection pressure by feeding the bulls enough to express their genetic ability and also test their foot quality. The bulls are developed on a long, steep, rocky hill where they have to climb each day to the feed bunk to eat a high roughage ration. This keeps them athletic and in good shape.

We believe these bulls are developed as good as any and are ready to make “Good Cattle” for you.

COMMANDER SONS We purchased 4404 from Cow camp Ranch in Kansas.

We bought him for his impeccable foot quality and great structure. We used him to cleanup heifers. Being a G+ ACE for his calving ease and maternal quality, we’re excited about the calves we have. Unfortunately, we lost him last summer so this will be his only calf crop. If you run in Big Country and like calving ease cattle with average growth, moderate frame and are great footed, look at the Commander sire group.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
