Efficiency comes from the relentless use of our eyes, our scales and, now, animal specific genomic data, to identify animals that excel in the quest for the efficient production of beef- reasonable calving ease to get them on the ground, elite maternal traits to get them to the weaning pen, explosive growth to get them to the finish line and industry leading carcass traits to maximize grid premiums. A Note from the Sale Manager

What a way to kick off sale season in 2023 with a stacked offering from the Drake & Harlan families. The 2023 sale is headlined by a strong offering of embryo transfer bulls produced by some of the leading donors in the Simmental and Angus breeds. Likewise, producers will find sizeable sire groups out of some of the most profit-oriented sires offered today. The programs’ goal is to produce genetics that will add value to commercial producers while not losing site of excellent phenotype associated with the storied history of the Drake prefix.

No doubt commercial producers are feeling the optimism shown by higher predicted calf prices in the new year. As the sale book goes to print, the fall futures are comfortably north of $2.00 on feeder cattle. Cow calf producers are now entering into a time of increased profitability, and, hopefully, we will see input costs drop in the new year. The continued shrinking inventory of the U.S. cowherd points to the probability of a much longer-term increase in calf prices. If we can sustain higher calf prices for multiple years, revenue for cow calf producers will rise to levels not seen in nearly a decade.

Drake and Iron Creek Bull Guarantee

We guarantee every bull purchased in this sale to be a breeder (defined as the ability to settle healthy cows by the time the bull is 18 months of age) with the exception of:

• Bull calves sold at side of dam;

• Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale;

• Negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser; or

• Bulls shown competitively after sale.

In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to us, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the state of Iowa. We shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of such six months we are unable to establish that the animal is a breeder, we will, at our option, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement.

All of the legal jargon aside, we view the bull guarantee as a good faith neighbor’s agreement with you. We will act in good faith to determine if there was or is an issue with the bull and if there is we will make it right with you. In exchange we ask that you act in good faith as well.

Please manage the bulls with common sense-provide sufficient feed and shelter, keep in mind the bull’s age when turning him out and monitor his condition. A young bull turned out with 50 cows in a snow covered pasture eventually won’t breed cows-but it isn’t his fault. We appreciate your business and will always work with you to do what is right. SIMMENTAL AND SIMANGUS™ YEARLING BULLS

We strive to act boldly in acquiring and developing industry leading genetics. Sometimes that works as we hoped…and sometimes it doesn’t. We believe in this case our actions have resulted in a truly unique opportunity. A few years ago we acquired KBHR Matron of Honor F202 (“Matron”) and she has more than proven her genetic predictions by maintaining an astounding set of genomically enhanced EPDs - a near 200 All Purpose Index with, unique in the world of high API females, very strong growth EPDs to go along with her EPDs in the top 1% marbling, 1% ribeye area, 1% maternal calving ease and 1% Terminal Index. A genetic outlier by any definition.

In 2021 we then had the opportunity to be a small part of a four member group that acquired Poss Deadwood, the $900,000 purebred Angus bull from Poss Angus. I won’t soon forget standing in a restaurant on the phone with John Wessel of Pineview Angus and joining that group. In a short period of time Deadwood has sold over $900,000 in semen and over $1 million in progeny. The owners, led by Chris Earl of CK6 Consulting and John Wessel, have aggressively submitted DNA data on Deadwood calves and have, as of the date of this note, overseen the submission of 1,992 DNA samples on Deadwood calves. As more data is collected, Deadwoods’ genomically enhanced EPDs continue to improve-the definition of a genetic outlier. He is now a 400 $Combined in the Angus database placing him in the elite top 1% of the Angus breed. In our view, the Simmental system for assimilating Angus data is not yet perfected and does not yet reflect the true genetic value of Deadwood. But, even at that, in the Simmental database Deadwood is in the top 3% for calving ease, 2% for weaning weight, 1% for yearling weight, 1% average daily gain, 1% carcass weight, 1% marbling, 10% ribeye area, 1% All Purpose Index and 1% Terminal Index.

We have combined one outlier with another, Matron bred to Deadwood, and created what is perhaps the most unique half blood stud bull opportunity to sell in the entire 2022-2023 sale season. Born in October, 2022 to this mating were two bulls, Iron Creek Favors the Bold and Iron Creek Never Say Never. These names, of course, arise respectively from the phrase “Fortune Favors the Bold” and from those naysayers that state you can never raise a bull the excels in the rare air of top genetic performance and that also has the “look.” Both Favors the Bold and Never Say Never carry the unique genomic strength of their parents and, though only a few months old, carry the look of deep, soft and powerful stud bulls. We will before sale day provide pictures and video of each and at the sale you will have the opportunity to bid to purchase the bull of your choice, to be selected at weaning approximately on approximately May 1st, 2023. We guarantee that the bull selected will freeze semen by 18 months of age or will take return of the bull and refund your purchase price in full. To our knowledge the bulls in this sale are the only opportunity of the 2022-2023 sale season to purchase a Deadwood half blood bull. In the case of these two bulls, it is also an opportunity to purchase a bull that will advance your program, and the breed, to new heights of performance. Eagle continues to push the industry forward with his positive attributes and is one of the heaviest use sires in the entire ASA database. His sons consistently find their way atop of production sales across the country. Admired for their mass, stoutness and quite disposition. The Eagle progeny brings value from an EPD standpoint across the board. His daughters continue to build upon Eagle’s Legacy as the daughters are wonderful for maternal characteristics.

This Eagle son out of one of my favorite first calf heifers. Yes, you read that right! This big boy is out of a heifer. His WW and YW EPDs are both in the top 3% with personal data to back them up. He has a 205 weight of 738 lbs and a yearling weight of 1513 lbs. This bull had an ADG of 4.81 lbs/day. Pair growth like this with carcass traits and this guy is a cattleman/finisher’s dream.

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED

PROGENY DIFFERENCES

(EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

ALL -PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.

The Bred Heifers.

The bred heifers were bred by artificial insemination as indicated in each foot note and then were pasture exposed from 5-28-2022 to 7-5-2022 to US Grant and from 7-10-2022 to 9-5-2022 to Black Summit Most Wanted. The heifers were then checked by ultrasound and the breeding information is the best estimate of the technician but is not guaranteed. We cannot guarantee calf sex or exact calving date and ask that you use your best judgment in this regard. Buyers agree to pick up all bred heifers within 7 days of the date of the sale.

Black Summit Most Wanted (ASA 3916336) was the top selling bull in the Black Summit sale in Powell, Wyoming. He is the kind we admire as he is soft made, easy-keeping, very sound on his feet and legs and easy on the eyes. His EPDs are excellent-top 10% calving ease, weaning weight, yearling weight and maternal weaning weight, top 15% average daily gain, docility, All Purpose Index (154) and Terminal Index (89), top 20% Stay and maternal calving ease and top 25% milk.

US Grant came out of our friends at Heartland Simmental’s program by way of our friend Grant Mathes. HL US Grant is one of the most attractive Guardian sons to date. So God Made a Farm Wife.

On the 9th day God looked down on his first creation and said “This is good, but the farmer needs a helper”. So, God created a Farm Wife.

God said, “I need someone who can rise early enough to make coffee and have at least two cups before waking the Farmer to start the day. She needs to be able to care for the kids, make the house a home, run the farm office and work beside the farmer. She needs to prepare the meals that feed anywhere from two to ten on any given day. She can plan, cook, and deliver meals to the field if needed. So, God made a farmer’s wife.

God said “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with their newborn child. Watch their children grow. Then pray each morning and teach their children to say ‘please and thank you.’ I need somebody who can make an egg sandwich, plan a budget without a paycheck or thicken soup, who can deliver vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. So, God made a farmer’s wife.

God said “I need somebody strong enough to plant trees and throw bales, to co-sign a loan for a half million dollars with steady hands, yet gentle enough to tame show calves, raise the kids and calm the farmer when he is upset over higher rent or lower corn, who will stop her work to help a neighbor. Somebody to wash, dry, iron, tidy, feed, rake, water, drive, check homework, pack lunches, remember schedule and chase cattle through the cornfield eight months pregnant. So, God made a farmer’s wife.
