Our upcoming bull sale will be Monday, February 14th. We thank you for interest and attendance in the past. It is very much appreciated.

We are offering a strong set of bulls that were raised in the short grass country of Eastern Montana with limited feed resources and no creep. This past summer’s drought has again tested our cow herd.

They have responded well. Our cattle are selected for sound feet and legs, good fertility, performance mating, and docility with above average growth that produce those SIM-ANGUS FEEDER CATTLE THAT TOP THE MARKET! We DNA test and on sale day genomically enhanced EPD’s will be available.

We hope to get the results about February 1st and they will be published on our website when we get them. EPD’s are the most accurate predictor of both performance and carcass traits and are the fastest move to make for genetic improvement.

The cattle markets are strong and the worldwide demand for beef continues to grow. When it rains this spring, things will be good!

Cattle sell under the recommended terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association and the American Angus Association. If you have any questions, contact us. The seller will be responsible for no more than the purchase price.

Registration papers will be transferred. Animals will become your responsibility after the sale. Insurance will be available sale day.

We have made arrangements for the sale to be broadcast online with Superior Click to Bid. For complete details, please see page 2.

UPDATED INFORMATION

Bulls will be weighed, semen tested and testicle measured. Updated data will be available on sale day. This data will be on our website, or you can call us and we can email it to you prior to the sale. A supplement sheet will be available sale day with all information. Announcements made from the block take precedence over all printed materials.

DNA TESTING

Any animals with potential to be a carrier by pedigree can be DNA tested.

We are testing bulls that we cannot identify as homozygous black by pedigree and will have the results sale day. They will also be posted to our website as soon as we get them, or call us for results.

DELIVERY ARRANGEMENTS

Bulls will be delivered free up to 300 miles in May. For delivery on bulls more than 300 miles, Nelson Livestock Co. will guarantee trucking, not to exceed $250/head in the continental USA, if arranged by Nelson Livestock Co. If the bulls are picked up sale day, deduct $50. If bulls are not picked up sale day, we recommend insurance. Bulls become your property when they are sold.

SEMEN INTEREST

Nelson Livestock Company reserves the right of 1/3 semen interest on any bull sold in the sale. The buyer will get 100% of the walking rights and salvage value and 2/3 of the semen rights.

HEALTH PROGRAM

Nelson Livestock Co uses a comprehensive vaccination and health monitoring program. The bulls are guaranteed BVD-PI negative and can be tested before delivery if requested by the buyer.

The new year is a welcomed time for eastern Montana. The optimism for more moisture and a stronger, more profitable year in the beef business is hopefully in store for cattle producers.

Like many other producers in the region, the Nelson’s operation is no exception to effects the drought has made over the last year. The tough decision to let some cows find new homes and modifications to the bull numbers in this year’s sale has been made by the Nelson family.

Running cattle in Wibaux and surrounding areas takes tough cattle who can stand up to the harsh environment and even tougher people. The Nelson operation checks both of those boxes. Past customers will attest that, if cattle can survive and thrive at the Nelson Ranch, they will flourish in just about any other cowherd in the country. This year’s offering of just over 60 herd sire candidates has made it through all of the environmental challenges Mother Nature has thrown their way, and are ready to go to work for the commercial cowman.

This year’s set of bulls provided by the Nelson family will give customers a chance to acquire some of the freshest and most profit-oriented genetics with which to build back their herd. A balanced set of figures and practical phenotype is represented in every lot within the bull sale.

Gold Sire Group Extremely impressed in what we have seen in our first TJ Gold progeny. The bulls are a blend of phenotype and exceptional genetic value. The Gold progeny have surpassed our expectations on growth and frame while the abundance of the sire group comes in a heifer safe package. We have never had a junior sire that has been so consistent and we tested him on a variety of different types of cows. A NOTE FROM OUR NUTRITIONIST...

Nelson Livestock Company develops their bulls on a high roughage ration consisting of no more than 0.5% of body weight of corn, along with other fiber-based energy sources. The ration was designed to provide a large ratio of rumen by-pass (undegradable) protein, which can improve rumen efficiency and feed conversion. A diet of highly digestible fiber and properly balanced protein allows cattle to more effectively build muscle and frame, letting bulls grow without getting overly conditioned. Bulls developed on these types of rations tend to have more longevity, are sounder on their feet and legs, and maintain body weights more efficiently when turned out on pasture, in contrast to cattle developed on high starch diets. Nelson Livestock bulls are hard bodied, sound-footed, and set up to excel in any operation. This feeding program, coupled with the genetic history of Nelson Livestock Company, provides the opportunity for an investment in a herd sire which should have a positive impact for years to come.

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed.

For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed.
