WELCOME TO THE SALE... RAISING CATTLE WITH THE VALUE OF HETEROSIS SINCE 1984 Hey y’all, Kaitlyn here! I decided that with everything my dad has on his plate at the moment, I would help him out and write the Welcome to the Sale story for our catalog this year, just don’t tell him that! 2021 was definitely a year to remember, farmers and ranchers everywhere not only had to deal with the crazy economics but Mother Nature’s wrath as well. Our heifers and cows showed their true grit during the 2021 calving season, calving in sub zero temperatures, doing a fabulous job of mothering their calves, getting them up and going and getting that first milk into their little bodies so they could handle the frigid temperatures. Dad helped them out by putting out plenty of hay for them to eat and bed down in and for the babies to nestle down in to keep warm. With tree belts, plenty of hay and dad putting in some very long hours, our cattle made it through February ’21 in pretty good shape. I know my dad is very thankful and appreciative of Wes for the help and assistance he was able to provide during the month of February ’21. Summer proved to be just as difficult this last year with very little moisture falling, but through it all our cattle prevailed. The bulls and heifers were weaned within days of each other early September to help with the pasture demands. Let me tell you those boys and girls were ready to be independent from their mommas and they’ve sure done well, growing and developing this last fall and winter. Dad has told me several times, whether its when we’re working with the bulls in the corral or going through their data in the office, this is our best set of bulls, both breeds, most consistent straight through. As you look through the catalog and read the pedigrees and study the EPDs of the 50 bulls and 32 open heifers, I think you’ll find what you are looking for to keep your herd moving forward; whether that’s calving ease, growth, structure, docility, power, maternal or longevity. If you’d like to talk cattle come on out to the place to take a look at this year’s offerings and spend a little time talking to dad before the sale on Saturday March 5, 2022 at Broken Bow Livestock. We know everyone’s agricultural life can get pretty hectic at the beginning of March, so if you can’t make it to the sale that day head on over to DV Auction or get a hold of one of our press representatives the day of the sale to assist you in filling your needs. I know mom has been busy with her part of the sale day activities as well. She has a killer lunch planned again with those awesome cupcakes for dessert and for the early arrivers there will be coffee and rolls available also. She has been busy finding just the right caps to put our logo on as well as some ear muffs and gaiters. She has also been busy making her wonderful jellies. Well I see lights coming up the driveway, dads back from checking heifers which means it’s time for me to wrap this up! We deeply appreciate your interest in our cattle and the support. Mason Angus and SimAngus will retain 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling. Buyer receives full possession and salvage value.

Terms of the sale are cash. All animals will be sold to the highest bidder. Changes in the catalog will be announced sale day and will take precedence over printed material in the catalog. A supplement sheet with updated information will be provided sale day. All cattle are the buyer’s property as soon as sold and will be cared for at the buyer’s risk. Any person attending the sale does so at their own risk. Neither, the sale management, owners, or sale facility will be held liable for any injuries. Not liable for any inaccuracies.

FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE
ULTRASOUND
ONLINE BIDDING
Bulls selling for $3,000 or more are guaranteed against a breeding injury during their first breeding season. The breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the purchased bull. Please notify us as soon as possible when an injury occurs and has been diagnosed by a licensed Veterinarian and prior to the injured bull being sold. All claims must be made by October 2022. If we have a comparable bull available he can be provided to get your cows covered this year, otherwise you will be given a credit of the purchase price of the injured bull less $1500. (buyer keeps salvage value), to be used in next year’s annual sale. This does not cover against mismanagement or neglect. We do not guarantee against death or injuries sustained prior to the breeding season. Mortality insurance is suggested.
DELIVERY
A $100 discount will be given for each bull taken home on sale day. We will start delivering bulls for free in Nebraska after April 1. We suggest, if you purchase a heifer that you take them sale day or as soon as possible afterwards to get them home to their new environment and feed management to be ready to fit well into your breeding program.

HERD HEALTH
Total herd health is provided by Broken Bow Animal Hospital. All bulls have been fertility examined and deemed Satisfactory Breeders. Scrotal measurements were done by BBAH. The heifers are up to date on all health shots and have had a Preg-Guard 10 vaccination.
HERD NUTRITION
Our total herd’s nutrition program is established from the advice and guidance of Bob Myers, Suther Feeds Inc Nutrition Consultant, 308-367-7115, and the direction of Dr. Dennis Holthaus, Suther Feeds Inc Nutritionist.
VIEWING
All bulls and heifers can be viewed, at anytime prior to the sale at Mason Angus and SimAngus Ranch. Ranch located 2 ½ miles North, 2.5 miles East, and 1/12 miles North of Anselmo, NE. The sale animals will be available for viewing anytime after 2:00 pm Friday, March 4, at the Broken Bow Livestock sale facility.
I’m a fourth-generation cattlemen. In 2005, I started working for the American Simmental Association as the Eastern Field Representative and covered everything east of the Mississippi river. I was on staff for 9 years. After I left the American Simmental Association, I started Ruble Cattle Services a company built from scratch in which we manage and consult sales all over the country. I also have a nice high-quality herd of Simmental, Sim Angus, Red Angus and Black Angus Cattle. We live in the southern IA north of the town of Corydon just 15 miles from the Missouri line. We run our cows like commercial cattle on fescue pastures. Because of my experiences around the country, I can successfully place cattle that will work for our customers in several different environments. ASA Quick Reference to EPDs, Indexes and $Values
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days. BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight. CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days. DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile). MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days. MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
