Lucas Cattle Company Fall Bull Sale

Page 1

This fall, Charlotte and I welcome you to Lucas Cattle Company with full hearts and a deep sense of gratitude. The cattle in this offering represent the very best of our program – powerful, performancedriven bulls and females, each backed by the kind of donor strength that defines our breeding philosophy. These are the progeny of cows like WS MS SUGAR C4, SSF BLK LOUISE Y534, ADV MISS GENESIS J1017, and HOOKS EVITA 18E whose influence continues to shape the future of our herd. Though we lost both Sugar and Louise in recent seasons, their legacy is alive and thriving in this sale.

This year also carries a much heavier note. We mourn the passing of Forrest Lucas, whose vision and values built the foundation of Lucas Cattle Company. Forrest believed in doing things right – from the ground up – and he poured his heart into this land, these cattle, and the people who make it all work. His absence is deeply felt.

As Marty Ropp, CEO Allied Genetic Resources, shared:

“I was at Lucas Cattle mid-week, and I have to say – it was the best I’ve ever seen things there. The cattle, the land, the people... it all reflected the kind of excellence Forrest believed in and built toward every day. He would have absolutely loved seeing the calf crop sell this fall.”

We move forward with that same spirit – committed to integrity, performance, and the kind of customer relationships that last. Whether you’re a longtime partner or joining us for the first time, we’re honored to have you with us.

Warm regards, Jamie Devney President, Lucas Cattle Company & Lucas Oil Speedway

IN MEMORY OF FORREST LUCAS

Forrest Lucas’s story began in the heartland of Indiana, where grit, humility, and hard work were not just values—they were survival. Raised on a small farm, Forrest understood from an early age the weight of responsibility and the quiet pride that comes from caring for land and livestock. That foundation shaped a life of extraordinary achievement, marked not by ego, but by purpose.

His journey led him to Missouri, where he and his wife and lifelong partner, Charlotte, built Lucas Cattle Company into one of the most respected seedstock operations in the country. With over 16,000 acres in Cross Timbers, Forrest didn’t just raise cattle—he raised the bar. Under his leadership, LCC became home to the largest registered Simmental herd in the United States, known for combining elite genetics with real-world performance. Forrest believed that cattle should work for the producer, not the other way around. His breeding philosophy was grounded in practicality, profitability, and long-term sustainability. But Forrest’s vision extended far beyond the pasture. In 2011, he and Charlotte founded Protect The Harvest, a nonprofit born out of a fierce battle to defend Missouri’s agricultural community from radical threats to animal agriculture. Forrest saw clearly what others missed: that rural America was under siege, and someone had to stand up. His rallying cry— “Someone’s got to fight this because it’s the right thing to do!”—became the backbone of a national movement. Protect The Harvest, which concluded its operations in October 2024, continues to uphold its legacy of a powerful voice for farmers, ranchers, and landowners, advocating for property rights, food security, and the preservation of rural values.

Together, Forrest and Charlotte championed causes that fed both body and spirit. Their support of Drive to Feed Kids and Hogs for Hunger helped deliver over 11 million meals to food-insecure Missourians, with a focus on protein-rich options that reflect Forrest’s belief that no American should go hungry. In April 2024, their contributions were formally recognized with induction into the Missouri Agriculture Hall of Fame—a testament to their tireless advocacy, philanthropic leadership, and unwavering commitment to agriculture.

LForrest was a builder. He built businesses, communities, and movements. He built herds that changed the industry and relationships that changed lives. He built a legacy that will endure in every calf born at Lucas Cattle Company, in every rancher who stands taller because Forrest stood beside them, and in every voice that continues to speak up for agriculture.

He was a man of conviction, generosity, and grit. He believed in the power of hard work, the dignity of rural life, and the promise of American agriculture. And he believed in Charlotte— not just as his wife, but as his partner in every endeavor, every battle, and every triumph.

We honor Forrest Lucas not only for what he built, but for what he believed: That agriculture is the heart of America—and cattlemen are its soul.

CLARITY IS CASH

Today’s industry pays big for heavy fat steers, but your pocketbook demands smaller cows. What to do? The answer is clear, dependable data and the courage to bypass traditional straightbreeding.

Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts.a

Meanwhile, packers pay $20 to $34 more for SimAngusTM and Simmental-sired steers than English-sired calves.b

Finally, raise efficient cows and high-performance calves. The proof is in the data – and the cash.

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
