Welcome to the sale.

Even on a year with little moisture, and a multitude of adversity, Simmental enthusiasts from across the west are excited to offer a fantastic set of females. We will sell nearly 200 Simmental and SimAngus females that are usable, functional, and can add tremendous value to any commercial or Seedstock program.

This year’s offering will include nearly 70 lots of front-end registered females from programs many of you know well. Additionally, we will offer a small set of commercial open heifers, as well as a great drought-induced special consignment from Nelson Livestock.

Please join us Friday evening for a night of great food, fellowship. Social hour begins at 6pm followed by banquet dinner, a speaker and the fundraising auction. If you cannot make the sale Saturday at 1pm, at Billings Livestock Commission, please do not hesitate to call with any questions.

Those of you who know us, know we are not big fans of any chrome on them, but she made it into our keeper pen due to her quality and she does have black on her teats. She is sired by the popular TJ Flat Iron and back to a 1st calf heifer out of LRS Iconic who did a nice job with this calf in a very challenging year where the only thing on the menu was old grass. Check out her genomic enhanced EPDs that show her with lots of calving ease but yet maintains above average WW and YW and ranks well in both the API and TI indexes. Phenotypically she is really balanced as well, straight in her lines, clean fronted, with a really nice cow look to her. Depending on the family that wins this heifer, she could possibly make a show heifer with her chrome look that is popular in the show ring. We do not let many females leave our program, here is a great chance to support the Montana Simmental Association and have a chance to take home a LRS heifer at the same time.

s a highlight of this year’s Western Choice Sale, we have a special dispersal consignment from the historic Nelson Livestock Company herd at Wibaux. Were it not for the extreme drought and lack of winter feed in the region, buyers would not have this opportunity to purchase the absolute best selected young females from the Nelson family. In this case, adversity breeds opportunity as the Nelson’s gave us 100% access to catalog and individually sell any 30 of the 3-6 year-old females on the ranch and the choice of the top bred heifers that are carrying heifer calves. This is the absolute heart of the young herd, nothing was held back and I know you will be impressed with the selection and the genetic value.

The Nelson program is one of the best known and longest running, continuous Simmental operations in this nation with its roots going back 50 years. Known for the kind of rugged and worry-free females that it takes to thrive in the dry badlands and breaks of far eastern Montana, these females will go to right work for you. You won’t need to go to work for them. Low maintenance, hardy genetics that excel in calving ease, performance, fertility and carcass traits NLC is truly one of the top herds in the US for sustained production and multi-generational outcross genetics.

In addition to these special 30 selected females, the Nelson’s will also offer 3 semi loads of the remaining 3-6 year old registered bred cows for those who might want proven, seedstock quality bred females in volume. Those large and valuable groups will sell immediately following the offering of selected, individually lotted cows. Many of these females will be carrying AI calves and all are confirmed pregnant with estimated breeding dates. This kind of opportunity to access proven, high value, hard working Nelson females in volume would be a great way to start up or upgrade a seedstock herd anywhere in the country.
