GLOSSARY

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first–calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then just as with EPDs zero in on the unit difference between the bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. X 4 yr.=$6,000).

A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

PARTNERSHIP LOTS

In the case of bull partnership lots, the new partner will have first choice to decide what 60 days they will be able to breed the bull. All decisions relating to the possession, showing, promotion, collecting of semen, and marketing will be mutually agreed upon prior to the transaction with both parties dividing all future expenses and net revenue.

Female partnership lots will be owned 50/50 with all future production being coowned. The partner with possession will receive $375 per year for maintenance from the other partner. A partner that is selling their interest must give the other partner the right to match any bona fide guaranteed offer prior to selling their interest to a third party. Contract on these lots will be available on sale day.

Those of us in extreme South Texas continue to battle what seems to be an everlasting drought. When deer hunting with my father as a young boy, we shared a deer camp with a county agent named Dr. Maxwell, who became famous for describing the Valley climate as “Persistent drought with intermittent flooding”. Ole Maxwell’s words ring true even today as we continue to make the best of the lack of rain. Even in our irrigation districts, growers are forced to make hard choices about what to save and what to let go as the shrinking water level in our reservoirs are at or below historical levels. Thank goodness for great cattle prices and a bright future in the coming seasons.

At Fralise Farm and Ranch, we are dedicated to raising cattle that are gentle, hardy, and structurally sound, capable of thriving on our forage-based, intensive rotational grazing program. Our goal is to produce cattle that perform well in the show ring and excel as breeding adults on pasture. We’ve developed a comprehensive heifer development program focused on replacement females and continue to enhance our herd by introducing superior Simbrah genetics. With the power of proven sires and cow families, we’re capitalizing on the best Simbrah has to offer.

Special thanks to Tim Smith for his guidance and for inviting us to participate in Synergy.

At our ranch, this week we will finish weaning the last pasture holding calves from February. Combined with earlier weanings, we’ll be making our final selections from this crop and plan our breeding programs to develop bred heifers for next year’s fall sales. As we approach the peak of hurricane season, we continue to count on our Lord to deliver us the life-giving water that we all need.

We have been breeding Simbrah cattle for 41 years. Over the years we have seen different fads come and go, but the breed is the best it has ever been. With the cattle markets as strong as they are and the improved weather conditions Simbrah has a very bright future.

Our ranches are located in Leon County about 1 hour northeast of College Station. Strack Farms carries about 125 mother cows along with young heifers and bulls for sale at all times.

We provide seedstock for local customers, as well as selling to Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil. Over the years we have seen a number of our cattle excel in the show ring for junior customers. We have been actively involved in the TSSA, as well as area associations within the state. This is the 6th Synergy that we have been involved with, and we have selected some beautiful heifers that possess powerful genetics for your consideration this year.

This year marks our 28th year as Simbrah and Simmental breeders, and we’re thrilled about the high-quality cattle we’re bringing to Synergy XVII. Mark and I are continuously refining our herd by leveraging the best sire power these breeds have to offer. If you take a closer look at our herd’s pedigrees, you’ll see the influence of many of the breed’s greats. We are strong supporters of Simbrah youth development programs and actively sponsor numerous FFA and 4-H events. Located in the northeast corner of Texas, just south of DeKalb and near the Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana borders, we invite you to visit our farm anytime. Welcome to Synergy XVII! Our ranch is in Henderson, Texas, where we focus on producing quality Simbrah cattle. Our foundation dams now include the established donors Smith The Next Bella and Smith Priceless Gem 377A, along with 2nd generation donors developed in our program, Smith TMP Bella Paula Marie (aka Bubbles) and Smith TMP Royal Jewel 109G (aka Rude Reba). We are excited to soon see even more of our young cattle enter the donor pens.

We warmly welcome everyone to Synergy XVII and extend our deep gratitude to Tim for his unwavering support. We’d also like to thank the juniors, parents, 4-H and FFA advisors, fellow breeders, and everyone who contributes to the success of this event. Without your involvement, Synergy wouldn’t be the success it is today. We are constantly working to enhance our cowherd by integrating superior genetics and proven cow families. Our bull battery has been refreshed with new names like Pay It Forward, Royal, Zuko and Harry, alongside our trusted sires like Accelerator, Frosty, Patron, Potential and Powerman. We’ve made some adjustments in our percentages, incorporating more Brahman genetics and then using new Simmental genetics to return to purebred Simbrah.

These cattle are performing exceptionally well in the warmer, drier conditions we’ve been experiencing. We invite you to evaluate our cattle and share your thoughts. We hope you enjoy Synergy XVII, and please join us in praying for rain and staying safe.

Also, this year we have expanded our bull battery by adding three young herd sires: Smith Stay Humble 39L, Smith Can’t Stop Being Good (50L) and TMP Smith Big Easy 614L (another young bull that we are proud to have raised). We can’t wait to see what their progeny will bring to the table!

We’re pleased to announce that TMP had a new future showman born in October of last year. We welcome James Orion to join Jacob and someday Conor in the show ring! Katarina and Kelton are the proud parents of these three boys.

We are offering six lots in the sale this year. Two are solid breeding prospects with exciting futures and four are projected as show calf prospects. Both breeding heifers bring fresh genetics to the forefront. The show prospects feature offspring of two of our young bulls, Smith Adventurer 814F and Smith TMP Cast No Doubt 377J, along with a heifer from one of our future donors, Smith Watch My Moves. REAVIS FARMS

As we enter our 37th year as Simbrah breeders, we are as enthusiastic as ever about the limitless potential of the breed. Over the past year, we’ve introduced new genetics into our program, using top Simmental sires to enhance our EPDs and carcass traits. Our bulls continue to excel in the Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Gain Test, and we’ve sold more bulls this year than ever before. As our herd continues to grow, our focus remains on producing cattle that thrive in diverse environments, from rugged range conditions to the show ring. In addition to our cattle operation, we run a diversified family farm growing grain, corn, cotton, sunflowers, and watermelons, with a particular emphasis on producing sweet 1015 onions.

Using Indexes to Advance Your Program

By Wade Shafer Economic selection indexes were first introduced by Iowa State scientist, Lenoy Hazel, in 1943. Best described as “genetic accounting”, economic indexes blend an animal’s genetic levels along with commodity prices to predict the impact the animal will have on profit when used for breeding. Economic indexes have long been accepted by animal geneticists as the most effective means of making genetic progress for profit and, consequently, have been heavily utilized by the pig, poultry and dairy industries for years. Not surprisingly, the genetic progress made on those species through the use of indexes has been phenomenal--far eclipsing the progress made in beef cattle. By using ASA’s All Purpose and Terminal Indexes, you too can leverage the power of the economic selection index - there is no better tool in the beef industry for making selection decisions!

This is the third year for the $1,000 Synergy scholarships to be awarded. The Smith Family, Smith Genetics and The Nieschwietz Family, 7N Ranch initiated the program two years ago. The Rodrigo Da Silva Family joined in the efforts in 2023.

These were created to assist youth in their education, as well as honor members of each family. Both families have generations of involvement in agriculture and a strong desire to see continued involvement by youth in farming and ranching and promoting agriculture regardless of their careers.
