Nothing is more expensive than a
missed opportunity
Greetings from the Front Range! We started off our 2024 calving season right exactly as that huge cold front rolled in, so all of us grew quite philosophical, living in the barns, checking cattle every hour and napping in our coveralls. During any kind of crisis, things get very simple: at minus 35 degrees all is life or death. Those are the times you notice the difference in calves with hair, body mass, and aggressive appetite. They live. You notice the difference in females that are easy to work with, have strong maternal instincts, body mass and good udders. They stay attentive, and their calves live. But of course, we have so many more targets to hit than just these foundations. At every stage in the industry now we have an opportunity to add value, both to the end product for the consumer, and to our own sustainability. We can’t afford to waste that opportunity. It follows, then, that it is the responsibility of a Seedstock Producer to maintain great passion about quality. To keep accurate records, not only every year but over the decades- in order to track improvements, strengths and weaknesses, what you, our customers actually need from us - and to establish confidence that all of the invisible values are going forward with our genetics to the final product. We owe that to you all. Every year it is humbling, and thrilling, when we can offer something useful to our little corner of the Beef Business. Julie recently read a book about the history of the Chisolm Trail-the first major overland cattle drives from the Red River area of north Texas through Oklahoma and terminating at Abilene, Kansas. It is incredible to think about the progress that has been made in stewardship, volume, quality, reliability, sustainability and product value in 150 years. Just imagine, if one of those very early ranchers, gathering up snorty brushed-up longhorns so craggy they had moss growing on their horns, could see a modern rancher, putting 800 pound steer calves on a triple-axle in late October, knowing they would be finished and killed at 1450 pounds in only six months . . . Imagine if he knew those quiet, soft-made steer calves were worth, not $0.05/lb but over $2.00/lb. . . . His jaw would hit the floor. He’d think that was quite an opportunity. So, let’s not waste it! We have a strong offering of large sire groups this year to help you dial in a genetic package that will add value to all of your hard work and good management and years of investing in a good mob of cattle.
