Welcome to Larson’s Lost River Livestock 11th Annual Production Sale

Welcome to our 2021, 11th annual, production sale. Thank you to customers from previous sales and welcome to those who are new to our program. We sincerely hope you are as excited for the beef business as we are about the future of the industry.

My brother and I, along with our wives, have spent countless hours creating, what we hope, are cattle that will fit consumer demands for the next decade. The modern beef consumer wants quality beef, consistently. We strive to produce cattle that will hang a carcass which fits that need. Our Red Angus bulls rank in the top 23% and 17% for Marbling and Ribeye Area, respectively. Our Gelbvieh bulls rank in near the top half of the breed for all measured carcass traits. However, before the cattle get to the rail, they need to work for you on the farm. The Gelbvieh bulls rank in the top 20% of the breed for calving ease, yet rank in the top 40% of the breed for growth. It’s hard to find a better numbered set of bulls that can hang that kind of carcass. The Red Angus bulls are no less impressive. They rank in the top 40% of the breed for calving ease, while ranking in the TOP 12% and 15% of the breed for weaning and yearling weights! And if you want to make a group of top notch cows, both set of bulls rank in the top 25% of the breed for milk production! I challenge you to find a more complete set of bulls in country. To top it all off, while the ration was designed for about 3.4 lb/day of ADG, these bulls gained over 4.5 lb/day during their test period. Carcass, calving ease, maternal ability and growth, what more could you ask for out of an attractive genetic package?

We know that 2020-21 has and continues to present challenges to gathering as a community of beef producers. The current health problems are concerning from an economic and social perspective, but as beef producers we will continue to feed the country. We are aware that some folks need to be more cautious and to that end we are providing more pictures this year and will be ready to receive visitors at any time to look at the bulls prior to sale day for those that cannot attend in person. As always, the sale will be broadcast via DVAuction and we will provide phone bidding and order buying to anyone who requests it. With that being said, we are confident that 2021 will see our world back to normal and allow to go forward with our lives and livelihood. Larson’s Lost River Livestock Sale Information LRL Discounts Total purchases of $12,500 or more qualify for free nationwide trucking to central locations 5% discount on purchases of 4 or more bulls $50 discount on all bulls hauled within 5 days of the sale DELIVERY AND BOARDING OPTIONS BULL buyers will have the choice of selecting ONE option from the following list.

1. $50 off the purchase price of bulls taken home within 5 days of the sale.

2. Free keep until April 20, 2021. Bulls remaining at our farm after April 20, 2021 will be charged $2/day. Trucking costs will be the responsibility of the buyer and will be based on the delivery and trucking map on page 3.

BREEDING GUARANTEE All bulls are sold as guaranteed breeders and heifers sold as bred. In the event of unsatisfactory breeding performance, either a replacement animal or a future sales credit will be provided when the defective animal is returned to the seller in good health and acceptable body condition or a bill of sale for the culled animal is presented to the seller. All disputes must be presented before the end of the calendar year of sale. All females sold as “safe in calf” will be examined and declared bred by a licensed veterinarian within 3 weeks of the sale date.

TRANSFER OF REGISTRATION PAPERS Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer on all registered animals.

BULL PREPARATION, FEED PROGRAM AND AVERAGE DAILY GAIN Bulls were fed a forage-based ration designed to target 3.4 lbs/day ADG. The test was conducted for approximately 70 days and during this period of abnormally warm and advantageous weather, the bulls really exceeded their expected performance. All bulls left on farm after sale day will be placed on a lower energy diet to harden up prior to pasture. We encourage all buyers taking bulls home to continue to feed these young bulls appropriately to ensure continued growth and development.

CALVING EASE STARS Calving ease stars are listed for all bulls in the sale book. The recommended calving ease for each bull in the sale is based on the recommendations below.

• 1 star: for use on cows with little to no calving difficulties under standard conditions.

• 2 stars: for use on cows with little to no calving difficulties under standard conditions.

• 3 stars: for use on young cows and mature cows with little to no calving difficulties under standard conditions.

• 4 stars: for use on growthy heifers with little to no calving difficulties under standard conditions.

• 5 stars: for use on heifers with little to no calving difficulties under standard conditions.

Welcome to the 11th Annual Larson’s Lost River Livestock annual production sale. It is a pleasure to be back in northern Minnesota to represent the Larson’s and their fantastic sale offering. 2020 was a great year selling cattle for LRL. We sold cattle throughout the midwest and southern part of the United States to astute cattlemen, both commercial and seedstock producers.

The 2021 sale offering represents the strongest sale offering yet. LRL continues to use top AI sires and an extensive embryo transfer program to produce a product that excels in all facets of the industry. As you study the bulls you will find these bulls represent calving ease, performance, high carcass values and eye appeal. I take the opportunity to get through the cow herd every year to see the dams and sisters to these bulls and females selling. The maternal instincts in this cow herd are amazing. The factories you find in the pastures here are truly amazing females with high volume, soundness and milk that converts to the calves.

The sale offering this year has numerous bulls, red and black, that better fit the needs of the industry as any sold here in the past. Study the sale offering closely.

The 2021 female offering comes from the top of the program with the most up to date genetics you will find in the respective breeds.

We feel this may be the strongest set of bulls we have ever put together and with lot 1, we have one of the most unique and impactful bulls we have ever raised.

Eureka H46 combines some of the most valuable and sought-after traits, not just in the Gelbvieh breed, but in the whole cattle industry. This purebred Gelbvieh, homozygous black, homozygous polled stud is an outlier in many ways. First, his data is nearly bulletproof with a WW ratio of 122, top 10% CED, top 1% WW, top 1% YW, top 20% CEM, top 1% DOC, top 5% CW, top 10% REA, TOP 5% MARB, TOP 1% FPI, weighing 1290 lbs on January 9 while gaining an outstanding 4.49 lbs/day over a 70-day test. Second, he stems from our ultra-productive line of Rylee females whose influence can be found throughout this catalog and our herd. Third, from a phenotype standpoint, he is terrific. He is clean fronted, smooth shouldered, deep bodied, level topped, square hipped and sets down on nearly perfect feet. With Eureka H46, we feel “we have found it” and his impact on the Gelbvieh breed could be tremendous. We plan to use him heavily via AI in our own herd and cannot wait to see his effect.

When Chris brought Franchise to our attention, we were very excited about the impact a totally outcross bull could have on our herd but we weren’t expecting just how awesome the results were going to be. Foreman H25 illustrates those results and we just can’t say enough about this bull. Every year there are a couple of calves you know from the start will be at the top of the pen and Foreman H25 is one of them. He checks all of the boxes: our best cow family, 5 star calving ease, 123 WW ratio, outcross pedigree, purebred Gelbvieh, homo black, homo polled, the most physically dominant bull in the pen, excellent disposition, I could go on further but you get the point. His EPDs are also tremendous with top 4% CED, top 10% BW, top 10% WW, top 15% YW, top 4% CEM, top 25% DOC, top 1% CW, top 10% REA and top 3% FPI, weighed 1325 lbs on January 9 and had an ADG of 5.19 lbs/day on test. He is a bull you absolutely need to see and we plan to use him extensively in our herd.

When Chris was here at the end of October, our calves had only been weaned for about 2 weeks and even then, High Life H64 stuck out like a sore thumb. Chris picked him out of 150 male calves and deemed him the most impressive and he hasn’t slowed down a bit. We’ve had many Ditka sons come through our program and this one may likely be the best. He is an absolute monster of a bull and has all the characteristics of a breed leader. Everyone likes big, powerful calves at weaning time and this is a bull that can generate just those type of calves. Collateral H6 is a very powerful, high performance Optimizer son and as you can see from his picture, he has a ton of style. His dam is a first calf heifer out of the 2017 Canadian Gelbvieh Futurity winner, RWG Captain who has sired some extremely high performance cattle for us. Tombstone H308 is our only straight Angus bull this year and we feel he represents the breed really well. As you can see from his picture, he is an extremely attractive bull with tremendous length and depth of body. He is smooth shouldered while remaining very wide end to end. Layup H194 ET is a direct son of arguably one of the most dominant red Gelbvieh cows in the breed, JEMG LeeAnn 650U who has produced numerous bulls working in seedstock operations around the country. The cow herself sold for $17,500 as a 10 year-old cow on the J Bar M Gelbvieh Dispersal Sale in 2018 going to J&K Gelbvieh/Kittle Gelbvieh. We liked the cow so much we bought a package of embryos from the new owners and we have been very pleased with the results. As you can see from his picture, Layup H194 ET is a great looking bull with extra depth of body and a level top. This red, purebred Gelbvieh, homozygous polled bull also maintains excellent carcass EPDs with top 20% CW, top 30% REA and top 10% MARB.

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Gelbvieh Bulls HDG Hillsdown Finnegan 4F In our pursuit of the highest quality bulls to add to our genetic lineup, we came across Hillsdown Finnegan 4F. Late 2018 we found him at Hillsdown Gelbvieh in Alberta and everything about him impressed us: birth weight of 75, adjusted weaning weight of 1036 and adjusted yearling weight of 1443, homozygous polled, dark red and purebred Gelbvieh, excellent EPDs and he had the phenotype to match. So we contacted Marsmans and purchased their supply of US exportable semen and it turned out to be a great decision. We have used him both on heifers and cows with great success and the growth his calves exhibit is phenomenal. Outcross, red, purebred Gelbvieh genetics with great phenotype and strong EPDs are extremely difficult to find and we have a large selection of them this year with Finnegan progeny. We also have his only progeny in the US and we feel they are a great opportunity for US breeders to add outcross, powerful red Gelbvieh genetics to their herds.
