Greetings, Thank you for taking the time to look through our offering. We know you receive many sale catalogs in the mail this time of year and there are many places where you can purchase bulls for your operation. We take our job seriously as your seedstock supplier and know we are selling you more than just a bull. We are selling our program that is more than 40 years in development. The decisions we make for our cowherd effect your success. In these times of uncertain markets and variable weather the value of quality, reputable cattle become apparent.

We are proud of this set of cattle and hope it shows throughout the catalog. Thickness, fleshing ability, structural soundness and disposition are key to profitably and they are traits you will find in each bull.

There are many half, three quarters and full siblings to these bulls in production here on the farm. As you look through the maternal side of these pedigrees will notice the WBF prefix goes back many generations.

We know these cattle and we know what they can do. They have stood the test of time.

The females in the sale are a cross section of our entire bred heifer group. All are either bred to or sired

by Wildberry bulls. A majority will have calves at side sale day. If you are looking to add to your herd, there is something here for you.

As always, the bulls carry a first year breeding season guarantee, will be boarded free until June 1 and delivery is free within the first 200 miles. PRICING AND SALE FORMAT

All bulls are base priced at $2,750, all females base priced at $2,000. Bulls will sell first and follow a sale order. Each lot will begin at the base price.

Bulls that do not receive the base bid will be skipped over and offered one more time at the conclusion of the bull sale. Females will sell after the bulls. Heifers will be sold choice and privilege, with the buyer having the option on up to 5 head per winning bid. Please feel free to call with any questions about the format.

HERD HEALTH PROGRAM

All bulls & heifers are on a complete health program and will be accompanied by health papers for shipment anywhere in the United States. All cattle have been vaccinated for PI3, BVD, 7-Way, Blackleg, BRVS and Haemophilus and have been poured and treated with Dectomax.

SEMEN INTEREST

FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE

All bulls have passed a complete BSE and semen check. They are fully and unconditionally guaranteed to be as represented by us in terms of fertility and function. If during the first breeding season they fail to be a satisfactory breeder, we will either replace them with a bull of equal value or return the original purchase price.

PAYMENT

We ask for a fully refundable deposit of 1/3 the price of the bull the day you select the bull. Final payment is due when the bull is delivered or picked up. We expect full payment for females and they should be picked up sale day or shortly after.

EPDS

All EPDS are the most current BOLT at the time of printing conducted by IGS and the American Simmental Association. Please note that EPDs may change from the time the sale catalog is printed until registration papers are transferred.

How to Read the Performance Data

Tattoo: The bulls have a permanent I.D. tattooed in both ears that correspond to the alphanumeric ear tags.

Weights and Ratios: Actual BW weight taken within the first 24 hours of calving. The ratios for birth and weaning weights are taken from the ASA using their contemporary groups. The yearling weight and carcass ratios are figured by us in house, with all the Purebreds in one group and all the Percentage bulls in another group. We feel this gives the most easy to read information and shows how the bulls have done relative to their pen mates.

SC: Scrotal Circumference measured in centimeters adjusted for age.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS REA: Adjusted yearling ultrasound rib eye area. %IMF: Adjusted yearling ultrasound for estimated marbling, an indication of quality grade potential.

Back Fat: Measured in hundredths of an inch.

Green Illinois designates bulls safe to use on heifers.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)

CE: Calving Ease, expressed as a % in deviation from breed average of unassisted calving in two year heifers.

BW: Birth Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

WW: Weaning Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

YW: Yearling Weight expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

MCE: Maternal Calving Ease, expressed as a % deviation from breed average of two year old daughters unassisted calving.

This type of pick lot is always popular, because regardless of your specific breeding priorities, you will find something special among the 100+ young females to choose from. With the unique, outcross genetics that so many of these heifers offer and the reputation for great females in this herd, it is an opportunity everyone should consider.

Profit = Revenue - Cost. If you are reading this, I have no doubt you are fully attuned to this equation in light of the cattle market crash in late 2015 and 2016. Because input costs dictate a large proportion of profitability, consultants and educators across the U.S. have spent a lot of time this past winter discussing the best ways to control costs without negatively impacting production. I am as guilty as the next for getting producers too focused on ways to “trim the fat” in their operation for 2017.

At the end of the day, however, we still sell commodities, including cattle, as weight multiplied by price per pound. While we largely cannot dictate prices for commodity cattle, we can control the amount of product we produce through optimization of resources.

But what are resources? This term is often synonymous with feed and forage in the beef industry. However, what about genetic resources? Are you truly optimizing the genetics of your cowherd? If you are buying a bull just because he is “cheap” I would argue you probably are not. This is not to say a low cost bull is always inferior, but in most instances, the extra $500 or $1000 dollars spent on a bull that better meets your marketing goals will have a far superior return per dollar invested than the less costly bull.

In my opinion it is time producers stop focusing solely on cost and put more effort into optimizing revenue. The most profitable operations will take all aspects of the profit equation into consideration, starting with inputs that have the best ROI. In an already well-managed enterprise, the best ROI likely begins with a bull battery that best compliments the genetics of your cows. Pay it forward to your cowherd this spring, and reap the benefits for years to come.
